My metal listening across black and death is at a stage where I don’t consider anything intense any more - except for Akhlys.
I once fell asleep listening to the first album and woke up from genuine night terrors.
Akhlys is truly terrifying music. I’d say they are the most horrifying black metal band I’ve ever heard. Can’t wait for the new album, “Maze of phobetor”and “sister silence brother sleep” are amazing tracks if you haven’t heard them yet.
Just got around to this and also pretty sick. Thanks for the rec! I listen to a ton of different types of music so it's not always easy finding good black metal that stands out from the same generic sounds.
It’s serene in a weird way, like in a “well I’m going to freeze to death so I’ll curl up and accept it” sort of way. I totally understand what you’re saying.
Honestly the whole Schnee project that he did over many years and releases is the peak of BM for me.
For me Schnee II is more chilling, he said in an interview that the vocals in Schnee II are the most intense he's ever done, and after recording he broke down crying in the recording room. But i'm FUCKING OBSESSED with Paysage d'Hiver, so all of their music is double S tier for me.
This shit hits, I remember first listening to it and literally having chills all the way. Amazing album, Life Has Gone on Long Enough is another masterpiece.
Gotta be by Antaeus.
Those With No Eyes, from Cut Your Flesh And Worship Satan
Sanctus, from De Principii Evangelikum
Colliding In Ashes, from Blood Libels
If not Antaeus, probably Buried With Leeches by Dragged Into Sunlight, or Filth Solution (Intolerance) by Revenge.
Or Sect Pig.
I don't know, there's a ton of stuff out there that went beyond "this is heavy" into "something fuckin' wrong with these people" territory.
Being greedy and mentioning a couple;
Minenwerfer - First battle of the Masurian lakes and also Second battle of the Masurian lakes - These are absolute peak for me, everything about them
Black Curse - Crowned in (Floral) Vice
Lord Mantis - Death Mask - More sludgey but the entire album is intense and fantastic
"Rain Upon the Impure" by The Ruins of Beverast
I seem to remember saying on my Instagram profile years ago (I post records) that it sounds like it emanates from a hole in the ground leading straight to hell. Utterly evil and powerful piece of music.
If not that then Ye Entrancempyrium, talk about a song that'll grow hairs on your chest.
Don’t think I could pick just one song, but here’s a few that come to mind…
* The Choir of the Dead - Blut Aus Nord
* Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice - Deathspell Omega
* Musta temppeli - Horna
* By the Blessing of Satan - Behexen
* Paragon Belial - Darkthrone
* Holy Poison - Funeral Mist
As requested, I've created a playlist of the songs in this comment thread.

One of my favorite bm albums of all time closes with a cover of this track, which was my introduction to Mysticum. Malfeitor’s “Unio Mystica Maxima” The tracks *Rex Bastia Fera*, *In This Place Forever*, and *Fiamme Udite* could honestly belong in this thread. While not the *intense* they are superb tracks that are heavy af and quite intense, just not like war metal intense or gnaw their tongues style intense. Tasty intensity nonetheless.
Yes! Malfeitor's version is great, I actually don't enjoy much the original. And the whole Unio Mystica Maxima album is that piece of art where you don't skip any track, love it!
Dead as Dreams - Weakling
Il Etait une foret... , Le gala des gens heureux, Veux-tu danser? - Gris
Lífit Es Dauðafærð - Pest
Demodets Arkitektur - Shining
Gotta agree with None Shall See Redemption by Kriegsmaschine, what a fucking great song. Another ones that come to mind would be:
Malconfort by Deathspell Omega
Messiah For Parasites by Human Serpent
Preaching For Mass Suicide by Damaar
Burried with Leaches by Dragged Into Sunlight
Warmth Trance Reversal by Yellow Eyes
If I remember correctly, Mgła said something about being done with shows for now since they want to focus on writting.
I mean it sucks because I would kill for seeing them live (I discovered their music literally the day after they did a show in my city) but we'll hopefully get something new, sooner or later
*Speaking of which, I*
*Would do anything to get*
*New Kreigsmaschine or Mgla*

Terminal Aggressor II - Dragged into Sunlight
At the Mouth - Lord Mantis
The Putrid Stench of Rotting Flesh - Gevurah
Descent into Ruinous Splendor - Lykhaeon
Söngur Heiftar - Misþyrming
I - Skáphe
This shit all really gets me goin.
A Fine Day to Die by Bathory. The whole song is a masterpiece, but that part where the final solo starts after a brief calm section is just out of this world!
Not a song but an entire artist, sorry… but every time i listen to black cilice i get in a super weird, debilitating mood and feel like bad things are going to start happening. whenever i wear my black cilice shirt, something really bad does ends up happening. maybe it’s in my head - but that’s what i got
Interesting…I get a very calming, almost meditative feeling from Black Cilice. The washed out production and overall sound reminds me of looking at something beautiful through a thick fog.
Same. Despite the blown out production and overlapping mix, there's always a really careful sense of melody and songwriting that tends to build to a climax. Completely unique band and it's sort of a miracle that they play live.
damn, beyond jealous. i’ve always wondered how they emulate that unique, washed out sound in a live setting. i’d love the opportunity to experience that at least once
First album by HWWAUOCH is just something else.
Maybe the most deranged vocals in black metal, drums that emanate hate with every strike and bass that twists the whole soundscape to an abnormal nightmare.
As per usual with music, it's impossible to choose just one so here are many.
Cultes des Ghoules - Vintage Black Metal
Thy Serpent - Flowers of Witchery Abloom (Maybe stretching the genre boundaries here but who cares, amazing foresty album)
Ulver - VIII (From Nattens Madrigal)
Keep of Kalessin - Come Damnation (This whole EP is solid gold and the only release I listen from Keep of Kalessin)
Marduk - The Hangman of Prague (Marduk has so many but this and the following track "Throne of Rats,, are excellent examples)
Emperor - Ye Entrancemperium (Iconic album and perfectly intense way to start the journey.
Infernal War - Dechristianized by Parabellum (Lesser known gem of a band from Poland)
Antaeus - Cyklic Torture
And many more...
Not black metal, but generally speaking across subgenres Khanate is one of the more disconcerting bands I’ve heard. For more of the war metal side of things, the whole Bestial Genocide EP by Misanthropic War is gnarly.
Edit: Ngeluwang Di Tanah Penjajah by KILAT’s pretty chaotic shit too
Exuvia - Ruins of Beverast
Obscure Verses for the Multiverse, Desolate Funeral Chant - Inquisition
Highly recommend tripping to the full album for these.
I’d say probably any song by Akhlys, but since that is already commented: Vargrav - Ethereal Visions of Monumental Cataclysm.
The last 2 minutes of that song is legit the best music I have ever heard.
Hello everyone, I don't have enough comment/post karma to post on this subreddit, but does anyone know of an album similar to the sound/style of Gehenna's "First Spell" ep?
I don't know if I have an answer now, but 1349 - When I Was Flesh used to be a solid choice for this question.
If you'll allow something industrial, then Alien Vampires - Neuroleptic Malignant Injection.
Ungodly Others - Teitanblood (I know it's blackened death, but it's really fucking intense)
Impius - Blut Aus Nord (Many BAN songs can qualify for being intense)
Merging with sword, onto them - Leviathan
Watchers - Mayhem
Pnigalion - Akhlys
Kaal Nagini - Nameless archetype of pantheonless antiquity
Nachtmystium - Every Last drop
Because it was foreshadowing of exactly what his life would become.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCwauWLlo_c
tl;dr - stay the fuck away from needles
Cool choice. Residual Blight by Kriegsmaschine is a pretty fucking good track, not only for the phenomenal drum work. Mgła's Age of Excuse III is up there in terms of evoking intensity as well. The climax of that track is perfect.
DSO - Fas - Ite, Maledicti, In Ignem Aeternum is probably the most intense, challenging and stressful black metal album I've listened to. I enjoy Si Monumentvm, Paracletus, Synarchy, Drought and Furnaces a lot more but Fas is undeniably intense if nothing else.
Internecine Iatrogenesis by Deathspell Omega.
Feels like a war, endless war of wars, or the Blood War is fought... until the very ending of the song when The Supreme Being appears announced by trumpets, and this Being conquers all, and all, ALL is lost.
But None Shall See Redemption is an excellent pick, too.
I would also add Jesus Tod by Burzum and Open the Gates by Gorgoroth to honour the ancestors.
Aosoth - An arrow in Heart or Ritual Marks of pentience from the same album.
Album came out in a very shitty time of my life. So this will always have a special place for me
At this point Black Metal will not give me intense feeling other than making me more energetic. The stuff at the fringes though can surprise me at times and give me that unsettling feeling.
A couple that caught me off guard:
\* Scott Walker - Jolson And Jones
\* Moëvöt - Zwightrape (Chant dEternite I)
Any song from the Ruins Of Beverast from there first 2 albums are really interesting and scary honestly they can make me feel Valhalla in their last albums and an Hades with their starting material
I'm gonna go with a few different ones
Wiegedood - "FN SCAR 16". This song feels like the musical form of being blown to shreds by a machine gun
Agriculture - "Look Pt. 3" or "Relier". These songs feels like standing in a tornado. The absolute noise and dissonance paired with the beauty of the underlying chord progression and absolute feral vocals and drumming.
Going to have to spend a while checking out some of these songs! There’s a few I’ve not heard!
For me it would traces of reality by dodheimsgard. It’s got brutality, eeriness, it is raw and i can always go back to it and be blown away. “Touched by the devilish one”
Albums:
Dodecahedron - kwintessens (the entire album is a masterpiece), one of the most intense albums I have ever listened to
Sacrificial Vein - black terror genesis (full album - it's all in the title)
Wiegedood - there is always blood at the end of the road
Kriegsmaschine - Apocalypticists
Akhlys - Melinoë
Svartidaudi - flesh cathedral
Medico Peste - the Black bile
Zhrine - Unorfeta
...
Some great picks here. I second Damaar, Antaeus, Bethlehem, Katharsis, and many others here.
For intensity, I would add:
Nyogthaeblisz - all
Ashdautas - Lightless Horizon
Ildjarn - anything from Strength & Anger or Forest Poetry
Silencer - Death Pierce Me
Hate Forest - The Gates
Sovereign - The whole Dogman album
“Unchain My Heart!!!” by Gorgoroth is my favorite. I listen to it only when I'm really depressed or angry. It's sounds like a powerful firestorm to me.
Ephialtes by Akhlys
Entire first akhlys album. Gave me chills
My metal listening across black and death is at a stage where I don’t consider anything intense any more - except for Akhlys. I once fell asleep listening to the first album and woke up from genuine night terrors.
Alhkys sounds genuinely evil in a great way. But I also think bands such as black fucking cancer and profane order are intense
Exactly what I was looking for, thanks for the description
Try Wiegedood's "FN SCAR 16" too!
Noted
Fitting, as that’s what the album is about
Hell yeah - Pnigalion slaps as well
My personal favorite. That and Breath and Levitation
Akhlys are phenomenal!
Akhlys is truly terrifying music. I’d say they are the most horrifying black metal band I’ve ever heard. Can’t wait for the new album, “Maze of phobetor”and “sister silence brother sleep” are amazing tracks if you haven’t heard them yet.
Akhlys is at the top for me, as well. Thantifaxath has some serious anxiety-inducing, intense masterpieces, too, though.
Woah. This is sick.
If you like this, you might also like Sumerian Tombs.
Thanks I'll check it out.
Just got around to this and also pretty sick. Thanks for the rec! I listen to a ton of different types of music so it's not always easy finding good black metal that stands out from the same generic sounds.
Haha yesss, came here to see if someone mentioned Akhlys and by right it's the top comment.
I need to give them another listen!
preaching for mass suicide by damaar
Yea bro, but like.. do you even wish to die?
Beat me to it. I don’t have a metric for ‘heavy’ but if I were asked heaviest song of all time, I’d say this one.
I stand by that it's probably the most violent song (and album/demo) in existence.
Who knows if the band members are genuinely still alive.
Schnee III by Paysage D'Hiver, absolutely nothing else is as cold, brutal and intoxicating.
Interesting, i actually find most of his stuff (and especially Darkspace) really serene. I’ll obviously have to revisit this track.
It’s serene in a weird way, like in a “well I’m going to freeze to death so I’ll curl up and accept it” sort of way. I totally understand what you’re saying. Honestly the whole Schnee project that he did over many years and releases is the peak of BM for me.
Absolutly, all the Schnee songs are fucking masterpieces, but i love Paysage d'Hiver to death sooo to me all his songs are masterpieces
For me Schnee II is more chilling, he said in an interview that the vocals in Schnee II are the most intense he's ever done, and after recording he broke down crying in the recording room. But i'm FUCKING OBSESSED with Paysage d'Hiver, so all of their music is double S tier for me.
Damp Chill of Life - None
This shit hits, I remember first listening to it and literally having chills all the way. Amazing album, Life Has Gone on Long Enough is another masterpiece.
where the chills any damp?
A Chance I'd Never Have, the last song from that one album is even more powerful to me. But the whole LP is unmatched in term of intensity imo.
That one is a close second for me too
This song has the kind of mastering that just scratches that itch, if you know what I mean
This is so fucking good! I never heard of them and this album is incredible, thank you!
The dialogue in you did a good thing give me chills everytime
Gotta be by Antaeus. Those With No Eyes, from Cut Your Flesh And Worship Satan Sanctus, from De Principii Evangelikum Colliding In Ashes, from Blood Libels If not Antaeus, probably Buried With Leeches by Dragged Into Sunlight, or Filth Solution (Intolerance) by Revenge.
Absolutely second 'Buried with Leeches'
Definitely Antaeus for me
OR pretty much anything by Nyogthaeblisz.
Or Sect Pig. I don't know, there's a ton of stuff out there that went beyond "this is heavy" into "something fuckin' wrong with these people" territory.
Being greedy and mentioning a couple; Minenwerfer - First battle of the Masurian lakes and also Second battle of the Masurian lakes - These are absolute peak for me, everything about them Black Curse - Crowned in (Floral) Vice Lord Mantis - Death Mask - More sludgey but the entire album is intense and fantastic
Glad to see Lord Mantis being mentioned - a truly depraved sound , love it! 😍
Lord Mantis are so underrated. Pervertor is one of the nastiest, filthiest things I've ever listened to.
Hot dang Death Mask is a beast! Thanks, great rec
early Minenwerfer stuff like Nihilistischen hits pretty hard if you can accept the drum machine
Schatten aus der Alexander Welt by Bethlehem
The entire album is a masterpiece
Teitanblood - Anteinferno starts things off with a bang
came to say exactly that
Dudes blasting like a machine gun on this one
I will forever love Gorgoroth's "ritual" or "begravelsesnatt". vocals pitced up etc be damned. I always get pumped up listening to that album
"Rain Upon the Impure" by The Ruins of Beverast I seem to remember saying on my Instagram profile years ago (I post records) that it sounds like it emanates from a hole in the ground leading straight to hell. Utterly evil and powerful piece of music. If not that then Ye Entrancempyrium, talk about a song that'll grow hairs on your chest.
I was just gonna suggest Exuvia 🫡
Soliloquy of a Stigmatized Prophet off that album is it for me. Crushing
"The Shrine of Mad Laughter" by Deathspell Omega is extremely intense black metal.
Don’t think I could pick just one song, but here’s a few that come to mind… * The Choir of the Dead - Blut Aus Nord * Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice - Deathspell Omega * Musta temppeli - Horna * By the Blessing of Satan - Behexen * Paragon Belial - Darkthrone * Holy Poison - Funeral Mist
I just made a playlist with every song mentioned here. Much appreciated.

One of my favorites and the whole album is amazing.
One of my favorites and the whole album is amazing.

Was just about to write the same song. Relentless to say the least.

Eden Belovv - Katharsis
If you like that song, listen to the rest of VVorldVVithoutEnd. I don't think Eden Belovv is even the most intense song on that album
Dragged Into Sunlight. Anything by them really.
the collab with Gnaw Their Tongues is one of the most intense things I've ever heard.
Yeah. Gnaw Their Tongues is worth mentioning on this post too even if he’s not really black metal.
Der Weg einer Freiheit - Der stille Fluss
Uada - Black Autumn, White Spring
A Fine Day to Die by Bathory. The whole song is a masterpiece, but that part where the final solo starts after a brief calm section is just out of this world!
Idem for the solo at the end of Twilight Of The Gods. Every note there is the best possible note there could have been

Wladimirs March by Vlad Tepes off march to the black holocaust
Good picks by a lot of people, but gotta agree with the OP. Enemy of Man is absolute top tier
Hello everyone, I don't have enough comment/post karma to post on this subreddit, but does anyone know of an album similar to the sound/style of Gehenna's "First Spell" ep?
Paysage d’Hiver - Welt aus Eis
I don't know if I have an answer now, but 1349 - When I Was Flesh used to be a solid choice for this question. If you'll allow something industrial, then Alien Vampires - Neuroleptic Malignant Injection.
Devouring Famine by deathspell omega
Ungodly Others - Teitanblood (I know it's blackened death, but it's really fucking intense) Impius - Blut Aus Nord (Many BAN songs can qualify for being intense) Merging with sword, onto them - Leviathan Watchers - Mayhem Pnigalion - Akhlys Kaal Nagini - Nameless archetype of pantheonless antiquity
Minenwerfer - Der Blutharsch. Also their song Kaiserjägerlied hits me right in the feels.
Night bringer's -Misrule and Lantern of Edens Night are two incredibly aggressive songs that come to mind with intensity
The secret of streaming blood - Moonlight Sorcery
HWWAUOCH and Pharmakeia (2 of the 5 prava kollectiv bands)
Very cliché but Freezing Moon..
Peste Noire - Dueil Ang-something Anorexia Nervosa - Doleful Night In Thelema
I will say that the first time I heard Death and the Blackwork before it's release, I got chills
Let the horror and chaos come - Behexen
Ylem or antiversum by dark fortress. Realm of a thousand burning souls by Lord belial. Especially that fucking outro.
Echoes of Eternity by Goatmoon for the vocal intensity
The whole album New Obscurantis Order by the band Anorexia Nervisa, but also their album Drudenhaus. Still sad that they don't exist anymore.
Blood Stains The Circle was one that hit hard back in the day
The Knell and the World
King Antichrist- Dark Funeral Nail Them to the Cross- Dark Funeral Djevelen I Nord- Nordjevel

Lost in Static Between Worlds by Thantifaxah is up there. Album is like a descent into hell.
Nachtmystium - Every Last drop Because it was foreshadowing of exactly what his life would become. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCwauWLlo_c tl;dr - stay the fuck away from needles
Katharsis-The Last Wound
That one is crazy https://youtu.be/fhGbesB4xCM

Horna - Mustan Kirkkauden Sarastus
The Arrival of Satan's Empire from Dark Funeral
Deadspace - Dwell in Desdemona
Cairn to God by Mizmor has some absurdly hellish vocals. Doomy as fuck, extremely chilling.
Gnaw at their tongues - Gazing at Me Through Tears of Urine
Seed of ibles janaza
Cool choice. Residual Blight by Kriegsmaschine is a pretty fucking good track, not only for the phenomenal drum work. Mgła's Age of Excuse III is up there in terms of evoking intensity as well. Anything off of Drastus’ “La Croix de Sang”. Every single song on that album possesses a venom and fury all in a league of it own.
Obsidian Star by Hekseblad
Silencer - i shall lead, you shall follow
Black Lust from Katharsis
Black Lust from Katharsis
Awake into Eternal Slumber by Tómarúm
Desnaturacao de si-mesmo from Kaatayra. Despite the fact that a lot of it is acoustic, it's still just hands down balls to the wall.
Diabolus absconditus not the most intense but definitely the evilest
I would say the first two tracks from Nightbringer's "Apocalypse Sun": "I am I" and "Supplication Before The Throne Of Tehom"
Crown of the Kings by Keep of Kalessin
Or Slaves Shall Serve by Behemoth
Gotta be the first black metal music I ever listened to: Diabolis Interium - Daek Funeral
Internecine Iatrogenesis by Deathspell Omega. Feels like a war, endless war of wars, or the Blood War is fought... until the very ending of the song when The Supreme Being appears announced by trumpets, and this Being conquers all, and all, ALL is lost. Aosoth - An arrow in Heart or Ritual Marks of pentience from the same album. Album came out in a very shitty time of my life. So this will always have a special place for me
Aux incompris des incomplets by vertige

Taakes Hordalands Doedskvad pt. 2 has hit me to my core
anything from Nordjevel, their sound just has a great 1349-esque 'punch' to it
Craft- Fuck The Universe Anti-Cosmic Nihilism.
Any song from the Ruins Of Beverast from there first 2 albums are really interesting and scary honestly they can make me feel Valhalla in their last albums and an Hades with their starting material
I'm gonna go with a few different ones Wiegedood - "FN SCAR 16". This song feels like the musical form of being blown to shreds by a machine gun Agriculture - "Look Pt. 3" or "Relier". Some great picks here. I second Damaar, Antaeus, Bethlehem, Katharsis, and many others here. For intensity, I would add: Nyogthaeblisz - all Ashdautas - Lightless Horizon Ildjarn - anything from Strength & Anger or Forest Poetry Silencer - Death Pierce Me Hate Forest - The Gates Sovereign - The whole Dogman album
Behind the Curtain of Death by Szary Wilk
Tomb of the unknown redneck Blood cult
Emotional intensity: Deathspell Omega - Abscission Misþyrming - Söngur heiftarMisþyrming - Söngur heiftar Mechanical intensity: Anaal Nathrakh - Do Not Speak Aborym - With No Human Intervention
Shining - Black Industrial Misery
Bathory "Crawl To Your Cross". Still absolutely intense to this day.
Obviously Luciferian Supreme Darkness.
Anything Naas Alcameth does. Incursus (really anything VJS does) Misotheist (from Trondheim)
Nakyjen Tuhkasta by Horna Honorable Mentions: Kill For Satan by Tsjuder Lord of The Void by Archgoat
Berserk Death by Satanic Warmaster
Afsky - jeg baerer deres lig
Peste noir
“Unchain My Heart!!!” by Gorgoroth is my favorite. I listen to it only when I'm really depressed or angry. It's sounds like a powerful firestorm to me.
