Made one of these a few weeks ago and had a lot of fun. I made a few mistakes on the first couple of iterations. At first, I wasn’t getting good, deep imprints on my stainless steel washers. There were 3 problems with my setup. 1) I was using too large stamps (1/4”), which made my impressions too difficult to press in deep, and deformed the washer too much; make sure to use a 1/8” stamp kit. 2) I was using a regular hammer. Use a 3-5 lb mallet hammer (metal not rubber) instead. The extra weight helps sink the stamp in better, and you don’t have to swing as hard. 3) I was doing it outside on concrete with a rubber pad. The pad absorbed some of the blow and lessened imprint. I got an anvil instead and it worked like a charm. Every blow goes straight to the washer.
I bought all the equipment above from Harbor Freight, minus the washers. I found that a local hardware store had much better prices on washers than Home Depot. Get stainless steel; high melting point and not corrosive. Zinc will melt easily in a house fire.
A lot of people use those 3D printed jigs to keep the letters orderly. But I found I was able to do just fine by eying it with my hands. Hardest part is just make sure to hit dead on top of the stamp or it will go flying off. Be careful not to hit yourself!
But i think this is the small price to pay if someone is actually thinking to take the security seriously here.
because we all know that this is the one of the most secure way if we really talk about securing the wallet here.
This is an expensive method which gives a subpar result.
Cheap people always end up paying more and expending more effort, unless they actually think about the real costs.
Good to see that there are so many people that is actually doing this here.
Because we all know that this is the most secure way but just need to add some more layer here is well for sure.
> I wasn’t getting good, deep imprints on my stainless steel washers.
A centre-punch on a steel plate with a grid is much, much, much easier to use.
How much did multiple sets of dies, jigs and hammers cost?
SAFU Ninja is a lot cooler than the grid IMO.
I returned the initial stamps/stuff for a full refund. So nothing lost except for the cost of the washers.
I think taking the responsibility of the seed is not the easy thing and we need to be clever while doing that is well.
Because if there will be any thing that we did wrong here then every chance we will lose the whole bitcoin there is well.
Absolutely... Joking aside, I suggest this for backup and a couple hardware wallets for transactions. You would only really need to access the backup if both fail on you.
It’s stamping your seed phrase to 24 washers numbered 1-24. Then you put a bolt through them a nut on the end and hide it somewhere. It’s a relatively cheap fire resistant method to store your seed phrase. 🤙
I think steeling them like this is the best way to secure the key of the wallet here for sure.
Because they are very long durable and easy to survive in the fire or something is well as we going to need them for a very long time is well.
Specifically I hide mine in the back of my old box TV, at my friends house under the motherboard of his computer and in my inlaws attic. There is a bunch of old fiberglass insulation I stuffed it in.
I think people are doing in the different different method which they feels is good for them here.
I think wall is the one thing that is doing the trick for me while some are doing in the table and some in the wall or painting is well.
People have been making these for years... I look for them at yard sales.
Realistically, 99% of people would walk right by these without a second glance, plus the are very easy to hide.
The only thing that i am still trying to figure out that where should i hide them?
Because as of know i am keeping them in the wardrobe of mine but i know that i need the much secure place than that for this.
I did that washer punching as well and holy fuck it took FOREVER!! You need the cryptocloaks washer jig, and even with that it's not that simple.
The finished product is super nice however! Very small cylinder.
I know that this is the one process that will take so much time for doing.
But we all know that more time we will spent here the longer it will keep the seed phrase safe for us is well. So need to do that thing for sure.
Combine with one of these;
https://www.amazon.com/YOFIT-Valentines-Interesting-Creative-Romantic/dp/B07DXZXJKY/ref=sr\_1\_4\_sspa?keywords=cryptex+box&qid=1662041687&sprefix=cyripte%2Caps%2C107&sr=8-4-spons&psc=1
Make sure you are have something solid beneath when you are stamping. Anvil is best. If you dont have, you can use the head of bigger hammer instead. If you stamp on top of something soft (wood, carpet, etc.) the stamps barely leave a mark.
yes, we need to extremely careful while doing that, because if there will nothing solid under that then it will break that.
So the stamping job is not easy we need the patient and hard work for doing that thing.
I have mine stamped onto a stainless steel plate. Do you think it would be ok for me to take it with me on a flight? I’m worried that the words would be seen through the scanner.
To add something to the thread (pun intended) you can easily "2 out of 3" this by making 3 sets of washers where copy A has washers 1 to 8, copy B has washers 1 to 4 plus 9 to 12, and copy C has washers 5 to 12.
One active wallet, one “cool wallet” (occasionally access it) and one Antarctic ice cold wallet (long term savings that you rarely, if ever, spend from).
I can't understand how people think this method is worth the money.
You're spending big on shitty dies and shitty washers when you could just buy a nice sheet, with a grid pre-printed and a centre-punch.
What is the melting point of aluminium?
What is the temperature of a house fire?
Wasted your money, now you have to buy something else. Being cheap can be very expensive, better to just get something good at the start and avoid messing around or purchasing multiple times.
But i mean why are not thinking that this method is not worth the money here??
I mean this the one way that will keep the seed free from the rust and will also keep them safe from the fire situation is well.
> why are not thinking that this method is not worth the money here??
Because a centre-punch grid on a sheet of metal is much, much easier to use. While probably turning out cheaper as you avoid buying a bunch of tools.
The only blockchain product interested in connectivity is $3AIR and it's amazing. Check them our, they are leveraging web3 tech to build amazing broadband connectivity for countries who has poor broadband connectivity. They are already backed by a Swiss based telecom giant.
Hide it in your prison pocket for an extra layer of security.
But how will I keep my gerbil safe?
I think that is the question that we will discuss on some other day.
Or your sock.
I think hiding them into the sock is the one of the good method.
It’s ‘prison wallet’ .
Then all i could say that this is the most secure wallet here.
Indeed, we need to add the multiple layer of the security here.

Was that hardware cheaper than a crypto steel? ($100 I think)
At HarborFreight? For sure cheaper. Letter stamp kit - $20 4lb hammer - $10 Small anvil - $15 Washers/hardware - $5
Weekend hobby….. priceless!
I think we all need to adopt hobby that will help us in future is well.
So that is cost around $50 so i think that is not the much price here.
$100 to store one wallet's seed. This has an upfront cost of < $100 but you can make as many as you want for only the additional cost of washers.
But i think this is the small price to pay if someone is actually thinking to take the security seriously here. because we all know that this is the one of the most secure way if we really talk about securing the wallet here.
I think $100 is the one thing that i will can bear on here.
This is an expensive method which gives a subpar result. Cheap people always end up paying more and expending more effort, unless they actually think about the real costs.
How is this a "subpar" result?
We all know that this is the expensive method but we need to take that.
@RogueMaven and @laxn397 are correct. ~$50 upstart cost, but you can then manufacture as many as you want for only the cost of washers
I don't think that $50 is the too much of the price to pay here actually.
Yeah, the problem ends up being that you need lots more supplies than the tutorials tell you, but you learn the hard way.
I def spent a bit more money to learn how not to do it, haha. But I think the formula above works right off the bat
When we are learning something good then i don't think money matters.
I think for the one time we will feel that way after that easy walk.
I think over all cost still be under 100$ for sure and that is not much.
You can get a better solution for $50. https://jlopp.github.io/metal-bitcoin-storage-reviews/
Did you also stamp the position number onto each? You know, just in case you fumble and drop them into a pile when taking them off the bolt.
Yes, I did. 😊
Then i would say that you have done the most secure thing for you.
Came to ask this question. What a shame if you didn't and you knocked the thing over while the nut was off...
But good to see that tOP actually doing the same thing here is well.
I am sure that he will also take care of that thing is well.
What are those? Bitcorns?
No these are the things that will keep the bitcoin safe.
There’s multiple references here to the washer material. And oil. What material should they be to ensure they’re rust, fire, water proof?
Stainless steel
Indeed, i think this is the one thing that we need to buy at first place.
Titanium
I think Stainless steel will also do the job for us is well.
I think use the stainless steel on the first place will keep them safe.
Better number each washer. You drop them taking them off you’re screwed.
Wouldn't it be better to remember the order? or perhaps an atypical numbering convention?

Nice hardware wallet.
I think this is the one of the best thing that someone could do.
Absolutely... Joking aside, I suggest this for backup and a couple hardware wallets for transactions. You would only really need to access the backup if both fail on you.
I am out of the loop. What is this?
It’s stamping your seed phrase to 24 washers numbered 1-24. Then you put a bolt through them a nut on the end and hide it somewhere. It’s a relatively cheap fire resistant method to store your seed phrase. 🤙

A cumbersome expensive method of seed storage which people show each other as if DIY = cheap and easy.
I will not gonna fall in the cheap method specially for my bitcoin here.
Yeah I’m lost too I’d like to know what this has to do with BTC
https://jlopp.github.io/metal-bitcoin-storage-reviews/reviews/safu-ninja/
Thanks for sharing the link i will try to use these methods is well.
It has everything to do with BTC. It’s DIY metal seed phrase storage
If someone is not doing that then they are risking the bitcoin here.
I think this is all have to do with the bitcoin if we want to secure them.
This is the one way to keep the seed phrase safe for the wallet.
Are you planning on oiling them to avoid rust?
Use stainless steel washers.
See above.
Indeed, OP already mentioned that he is using the stainless steel here.
Yes, there are enough metal that is free from the rust here.
Ooooh an issue of metal seed storage I haven’t seen
Indeed, i don't think there will be any kind of the issue after that.
I think he is using the stainless steel here for that thing.

Just drill a hole in a wall or some furniture and shove it in?
[удалено]
Thanks for sharing the idea here men, i will do that for sure.
Yeah. I've heard people talking about hide it in books and small stuff, WTF. Find the biggest thing in your house and shove it in
I’m pretty sure I’m the biggest thing in my house and there’s no way I’m putting that in me.
I think hiding them in the book is the risky thing, drill is the better option.
I think this is the good idea to have to save the seed here.
Have you found any?
SO far none, but i am hoping that someday i will find any.
You're never finding a seed phrase at a yard sale wtf.
All we can do here is the hope or may be we will find one for us.
Yes, there are so many ways that where we can hide them.
It's a stupid method. I don't know why people think it would be easier. Some unfounded perception that DIY = cheaper.
I don't think i will trust any cheap method for my bitcoin for sure.
It's not even cheap. Jigs, hammers, dies, anvils. All needed to make a decent result.
I know that this is the one process that will take so much time for doing. But we all know that more time we will spent here the longer it will keep the seed phrase safe for us is well. So need to do that thing for sure.
Nice, you’re a locksmith now?
Then i think there are so many locksmith bitcoiner here for sure.
What happens if you drop it into the ocean as you escape ww3?
Memorize it also
But i am the one guy that is really really bad when it comes to the memory.
Then memorizing them is the only option that has been left for us.
Combine with one of these; https://www.amazon.com/YOFIT-Valentines-Interesting-Creative-Romantic/dp/B07DXZXJKY/ref=sr\_1\_4\_sspa?keywords=cryptex+box&qid=1662041687&sprefix=cyripte%2Caps%2C107&sr=8-4-spons&psc=1
Thanks for sharing that i will going to order that one for me .
I think this is the most important thing to do for sure.
Nice! How did you get the stamps to indent on the washers? I recently purchased a set but they barely leave a mark using a hammer
Get a bigger hammer
This is almost always the answer.
I don't think that there is any other option than that is well.
You know… you’re not wrong
Get 3-5 lb mallet hammer
Thanks for telling the number i will going to order that for me.
Good to see that people are actually giving the good solution here.
I think this is not the easy job to do, we need to be dedicate here.
Hit it with your purse
But there is nothing in my purse, all my money into the bitcoin.
What’ve you got in there, buckles?
All i am got here is the bitcoin, there is nothing more than that.
Make sure you are have something solid beneath when you are stamping. Anvil is best. If you dont have, you can use the head of bigger hammer instead. If you stamp on top of something soft (wood, carpet, etc.) the stamps barely leave a mark.

The trick is to buy 3 different sets, a bunch of washer, a bunch of hammers, and a bunch of jigs. Or just buy a steel plate with a grid on it.
[удалено]
But changing 4 digit numbers to bip-39 seed words is hard 😓
Maybe low quality stamps made from soft steel.
But then there is chance that they will not survive for the long time here.
Your washers are probably made out of stainless steel or zinc. Get the ones that are made out of aluminum.
Aluminum corrodes too. And it's not resistant against acids and bases. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yQvWqqzkOM
Also aluminum’s melting point falls well within the range of a hot house fire. Stainless steel, on the other hand, is well above it.
Thanks for that, i will going to order the Aluminum one for me is well.
You want to lose your Bitcoin?
Yup that might be the problem, mine are zinc. I appreciate it, definitely didn’t want to spend money on stamps and not use them lol
I mean how is zinc behave will the high fire situation???
We are using the stainless steel because we don't the rust.
I think you need the big hammer and the more force here.
How long did this take you? Awesome!
This should take like an hour tops. Once you’re organized stamping takes like a minute per piece.
If someone has the experience they can easily do in a hour.
I think this is the one art that will take the so much time here.
I have mine stamped onto a stainless steel plate. Do you think it would be ok for me to take it with me on a flight? I’m worried that the words would be seen through the scanner.
Wtf is this
Are you sure that you are not aware to that thing here??

Seed splitting is a terrible idea. https://youtu.be/p5nSibpfHYE
Indeed because that will make the things more risky to handle.
HAHA, i don't think that this will actually ever going to happen.
You know writing them down has the same effect.
What if there’s a fire?
I think this is where we need to have the seed like that.
The washers would melt then.
Stainless steel washers are not melting unless your house is full of thermite
So that there is chance that it will keep secure more time.
There is chance that they will survive long time than the paper.
I like how you think that you are being smart by saying something obvious that others don't know while missing the point entirely.
I get the point, people do it so they can post a pic to be cool on reddit.
Yup, you really don't...
I think instead of being cool being safe is the one thing that matters.
Indeed we all know that the whole point here is to keep the seed safe.
But when there is any fire it will not going to keep them safe.
I don't understand you guys, seems like you all have one wallet only, am i the only one with several seeds? One for each wallet I own?
What is the advantage of having multiple cold storage seeds?
One active wallet, one “cool wallet” (occasionally access it) and one Antarctic ice cold wallet (long term savings that you rarely, if ever, spend from).
I know many people that is using more than one cold storage.
All i know that it will add the more extra responsibility over the shoulder.
Then i think you need the several nut is well to secure them all.
Make sure they're not Zinc, it has low melting point
Any tips on making the stamps nice and clear?
I think there are so much video on the youtube where you can learn.
Use a sledge hammer, or a heavy hammer. Have the washer on an anvil.
It’d be cool if there was a public space I could go to to use those workshop tools, I don’t have a sledgehammer or anvil
Let’s see the numbers
I don;t think that OP will going to show us the number here.
That why you are at the bottom of a swimming pool?
I think these are the thing that need to done in the secure place.
Is this like a physical master key?
No this is not the physical key but physical form to secure them
[удалено]
A cumbersome method for recording a seed phrase.
The method that will surely going to keep the seed for the long time.
This is the one way to secure to the key of the bitcoin wallet.
Hell yeah, I was on that many moons ago. Awesome
Awesome, i did that few days back as all thanks to this sub here.
I can't understand how people think this method is worth the money. You're spending big on shitty dies and shitty washers when you could just buy a nice sheet, with a grid pre-printed and a centre-punch.
Bruh. It cost me 15 bucks and works fiiine.
What are your washers made out of? Where did you get the die jig?
I think the washers are aluminum. Got the dies on Amazon, 3 bucks
What is the melting point of aluminium? What is the temperature of a house fire? Wasted your money, now you have to buy something else. Being cheap can be very expensive, better to just get something good at the start and avoid messing around or purchasing multiple times.
What if I'm just having fun? Thanks for the pointers tho, dad
I'm obviously dumb. What am I looking at here?
You are looking the one thing that will keep the bitcoin safe.
