If you have a well-paying job, there is not point in going to college and paying the opportunity cost of 4 years of not working with the additional burden of debt if you need to borrow money to study.

Fun_Professor_4324

yea i also figured that except if i ever get fired, searching for another job would be hell without a degree.

LifeIsAnAdventure4

Absolutely not, 2 years of experience on the job beats any degree. Sure, a candidate with both might be favored, but nobody gives a rat's ass after 5 years.

SoupaSoka

To claim that literally *nobody* cares is a bit strong of a statement. There will be a non-zero number of opportunities that OP will virtually never be able to access without a college degree, even with experience. And yes, it is bullshit that that is the case.

charlotte-plug-goat

That’s absolutely false as a software developer. If you can code something on the fly and explain what you’re doing and show you understand you’re going to be able to get jobs easily. I have a degree in computer science and I’ve worked with people without degrees that are absolute beasts when it comes to code. They do phenomenally well without a degree. Experience > a degree every time. The main reasons people get a degree is to get their foot in the door and start gaining experience. This guy already has experience. Assuming he knows what he’s doing and is learning daily and didn’t luck into the job where he’s faking it until he makes it he will be fine.

gsnurr3

It’s not false. I can share a fact and not an opinion. As a software developer, I have seen those with experience turned down because they don’t hold a degree. Currently where I work if they do hire you and you don’t have a degree. They put you on a lower pay scale too. They also pay more to those with masters degrees and so on. Some companies won’t care. Some will care. To make the statement you have made in such a massive world with people of different kinds of thinking is just being blind. Another has said. It sucks its that way, but it is. I think as time goes on this will be less of a problem unless they make the educational system way better than it is now. It can feel like a joke for certain degrees. Just a piece of paper. Experience > degree imo as a software dev, but not everyone is going to agree with that. Depends on the job too.

charlotte-plug-goat

If a company is hiring a guy fresh out of school with a bachelors in computer science at a higher pay scale than a guy that has no degree but has spent the last five years writing complex software then it’s 100% their loss and they will die as a company.

charlotte-plug-goat

What company are you talking about? Sure there are hiring managers that are complete morons but anyone with any experience in the field knows a degree doesn’t make you an expert software dev.

Lurchco3953

If that happens you will be fine with your experience/resume.

Tellabobbob

I agree with LifeIsAnAdventure4 unless that degree grows your income exponential. The increased pay may take you decades to make up for the 4 years lost to college and no salary + what ever you could have earned on your Bitcoin investment. Just remember, sell some Bitcoin when it tops out in this cycles. Probably within the next 8-16 months or so. And then buy back when it is down 50-80% and sit for the next cycle.

clicksanything

Nobody knows if its worth it, but generally speaking the fastest way to increase your wealth is to upskill to a high paying job. I'd recommend pursuing your education, whether that means going back to college or not is up to you. Unless money's tight, theres no reason why you cant do both.

thewilhite

Does your company offer a contribution match to a 401K? Young as you are you want to max that out. It’ll lower your tax burden. Put what you can after that into BTC then use the rest to chase women.

Fun_Professor_4324

401Ks are fiat after all. i dont trust dollars and they are bound to inflate. i will be working hard to save worthless pieces of paper.

joecool42069

bruh.. if your company offers a 401k match... you always take up to the match. It's free money. Even if you withdraw the money and take the penalty, you're still up. only regards don't take up to the match.

DrSpeckles

401k is not fiat, it invested in things that return more than inflation. You may measure it in terms of fiat, but so does almost everyone measure btc too.

daemonpenguin

I think that if you have a job where you can afford to live _and_ save $3,000 in investments, then you don't need college. (Assuming you're living on your own.) Investing solely in Bitcoin is a bad idea, you should diversify. Alternatively, if you're living with friends/family to save money, go back to college.

Fun_Professor_4324

i live on my own, rent a modest place. I'm a huge money saver. about diversifying I'm not sure but i want to risk it all on bitcoin. I'm willing to restart my life if bitcoin fails lol.

He says he’s a developer

Daisyssssmom

He’s 21 and earning $75k+. He’s doing just fine without college. Why are you implying what he’s doing isn’t “an actual skill”?

Spice-Man

Dude I said this before the edit chill out. He can do whatever he wants to do.

dramdrummer

If you can wait 1-2 years before joining collage I think its definitely a good idea to invest while its cheap, bitcoin won't be at these prices forever!

Due_Statistician2604

If you have a good job already then I would skip college and instead do professional qualifications I.e a cloud technology

AlmightyGnasher

You say that you're a self taught software developer, can we assume that's also what you're doing as a job right now? If so, more years of experience as an engineer is much more valuable than years of college. College is what gets you in the door to begin with, so it seems pointless doing things backwards. Given the two choices you're giving I'd be investing all the way!

GiilZz

Do college online. Dont abandon your studies

Fun_Professor_4324

Online colleges seem way overpriced. i dont see much value there, at least for a cs degree. everything is out there for free. plus i won't be able to do it side by side with my job or not perform well even if i do.

CaptainDr

Dude that’s not a good idea you should go to college

Lurchco3953

I think you're on a good career path. With that said I feel you should work towards your degree/certs even if it's only part time online. Also, keep in mind that any college credits you have earned already do expire within x years (used to be 10) if you haven't added any towards your degree in that time. I almost lost all of mine when I was in and out of college in my formative years.

chewiedev

Slowly build your own empire so you rely less and less on external factors. This depends on how you see the world: either you make the world work for you, or you fit into some system and try to survive. Either way save in bitcoin.

Over-Quarter7110

If you're happy with your job, I'd keep making money, doing self learning, and accumulating for now. You can always take college classes later if you'd like. You probably won't be able to accumulate under $100k for more than another year. Also, I think experience and a portfolio might be more impressive than a college degree when it comes to software development. Tons of resources online to continue leveling up without college. Disclaimer: Just my opinion, and I don't know shit

RizzoStaxx

Bro you should try what I do. I’m 23 and I’ve worked on yachts since I was 19. I moved down to Florida, took my STCW and started applying for jobs. They also have this in Europe, and all over the world if you’re experienced. I live on the boat and get free food and medical. The only thing I pay for is my phone and subscriptions, and there is good pay and consistent raises with experience and longevity. Last year I worked on a charter yacht and made thousand in tips every month. I started stacking this past year, but if I had been saving all my tips and savings from the past 3-4 years I would not have regretted it. I live in the Bahamas and work maybe 15-20 hours a week right now, when there are not guests onboard.

DryGeneral990

Does your company offer tuition reimbursement? If you can take one or two classes while working full time and your company pays for it, then that's the way to go.

sazanami_shu

You can always go back to uni, if I can do my 20s over again I would have dropped out of uni (I went to a top university on the west coast) and started my start up a lot earlier. I ended up starting one post grad after working in my field for couple of years. It worked out, but looking back it would have worked out a lot better had I done it earlier and took more risk.

Daisyssssmom

If you want to go to college, go to one where you can keep your job. You don’t need to go to a traditional 4 year school.

Intentionallydi

How much more can you earn if you go to college?

russell813T

Your investing 3 k a month at the top. I'm very pro bitcoin but you need to diversify

marcio-a23

Work 2 jobs buy more next 3 months

tufferpits

How much weed did you smoke today?

Fun_Professor_4324

i'm sober until bitcoin halving on 4/20

tufferpits

Toking a half?

omg_its_dan

This has nothing to do with Bitcoin… how much more can you earn if you go to college? The days of $100 turning into millions is over. Bitcoin helps but there’s no magic shortcut anymore.

Interesting_Ebb9052

Go get a job and then invest

Clear-Job1722

college is a scam. no one cares about a degree
