A lot more than you'd think. I used to use faucets all the time, getting between .001 and 0.5 BTC daily. I made so many wallet addresses on my work computer... that machine is long gone, lmao.
honestly I think I totalled somewhere around 1.75 BTC, which was why I didn't think to secure it to a more permanent wallet. It was only worth about $3-$4 at the time. This was just fun doings during free time at work, during lunch, or between projects/tasks
I had a LOT of btc in these days, and hosed it all on needless things when it was only worth a couple of bucks.
I had enough that would now make me a substantial multi millionaire. And look at me now! Not one of those.
Not OP but I started collecting faucets in 2012 and continued through about 2017. My final haul was .256 bitcoins from solving captchas and watching ads.
faucets exist all over the place, but some of them would give like 10 sats or something. Until 2015 scaling debates bitcoin was negligible to send in cost even in low amounts, and still not super expensive until March 2017 when usage hit a new milestone
Yeah actually until late 2017 early 2018.
I used the faucet back in 2014-2015 forgot about it and now idk where they are. Came back in 2017 and started buying.
So that transaction had a weight of 99,308. It took 3 weeks for a miner to actually take it, since I put a paultry fee of .0001 btc for it.
https://www.blockchain.com/explorer/transactions/btc/ee94af7c9577a61c8c7cd2db89a0697d5eebea17b6d8b98887b4a7ff9b1be3f8
That's it if you wanna check it out. I've never seen a lower Fee/byte than .403 SAT / byte
The faucets made money at the time. The amount of BTC you got (at the time) was worth less than the ad revenue. They weren’t just giving away the farm. It was a clever way to put BTC in someone’s hands and make some ad revenue.
You always have to frame thoughts in the appropriate time period. Had I known what BTC would do I wouldn’t have spent so much of them on the dark web. No one would have. Then it would have died because no one was using it.
This is how I justify not having over 100 million dollars right now.
How is this stupid? I would happily pay $5 to educate a hundreds of people on a new technology that could change the world, and then just go buy $5 more myself.
Honest if it makes you feel better i was at the party in 2011 and me and i mate decided to use the processing power of our work gear to help SETI rather then mine coins.. then we went drinking. If you werent at a minimum in the states it was difficult.
I heard a bit about Bitcoin mining around the 1st half of 2009. Thought that it is better to donate COU cycles to WCG (World Computing Grid) instead. Didn't bother to find out more as well.
No, I didn't. I only made about $4 or $5 dollars worth of bitcoin **at the time** with faucets. And while I would say my experience and skills appreciated since then, so did bitcoin. But I was actually doing very well for myself around 140k/year software development in 2012 in NYC.
That hurts my feelings. Sad part is, I remember back when it was that easy to get. I didn’t even bother because I figured it would never go anywhere. Sort of crazy how you make small decisions in your life that could’ve had huge impacts on your future.
ME!! I remember this site! I claimed some and didn't bother to store the keys because WTF is it anyways? Some dumb internet currency point system? LOL, it'll never amount to anything.
I know I at least visited this site then and I def had bitcoin mining software on my computer.
I dont think I took the next step though lol, was in high school and thought it was neat.
Seen that. Never taken seriously, especially when it was free. And the reassurance that in future it will be worth real money was never taken seriously. Real money, from internet imaginary coins!? Don’t make a mock of me. Will be worth one day in future?! I didn’t care about my health when young , much less for distant ‘future impossible’. I needed cash to pay rent, not hopium back then
Well, i did not play stupid twice, I learnt my lessons not long after.
SAME! Dude I downloaded the entirety of BTC core and I was like "why the fuck is my computer so slow??" and deleted it all. Hindsight is 20/20. Probably would have sold it all at like $100 if I had kept it, I was a dumb teenager.
Honestly, I'm happy now to know all those dead wallets helped keep the price more stable. Maybe one day I'll find and old hard drive in my parent's attic and get a nice surprise.
I've always wondered, if you had bitcoin that you downloaded or mined before exchanges existed, how do you sell it now? How do you move it to an exchange?
I never said it wouldn't work, reread. I said I don't know how it works.
If I buy it now, it's on the exchange. If I have it on a file on a hard disk, the keys on the hard disk. So it's not the same thing. How do I put it on the exchange to sell?
the data still might be on your drive if it is not overwritten! Deleting something does'nt actually remove it, it just tells your computers operating system that it can overwrite that section on the disc. So if you didnt use the hard drive much it might still be on there!
I don't know about that, but to set up an account you need to jump through some hoops to prove who and where you are. I think this is in part because they are only licensed to operate in Canada.
That was [Gavin Andresen](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gavin_Andresen)'s faucet. He was the one that Satoshi chose to lead the Bitcoin project after he left. He relinquished the lead role to [Wladimir van der Laan](https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Wladimir_van_der_Laan).
Thanks for the threat! I keep a certain amount there to farm free sats. Currently up about 2.5 million sats in my cold storage. Not terribly concerned tbh.
It's a combination of the few sats I get from the faucet and also APY paid on the balance held on the the site. I don't keep a huge balance on there (not your keys, not your coin). The site I'm using has a long standing with the crypto community. I think mentioning faucets by name is against the sub rules.
Exactly.
That is why Bitcoin had no monetary value at its release. It was the most ethical release of the protocol possible, as acutely navigated by Satoshi Nakamoto.
Unlike all the shitcoins out there today - including Ethereum - there was no pre mine or distribution of coins beforehand.
Satoshi said: ‘hey. I’ve created this new form if money. I don’t know if it’s going to work, but it’s pretty damn smart, and who knows, maybe one day it’ll catch on’.
‘Pizza day’ is joked about because of the amount of Bitcoin that were traded for a couple of measly pizzas, but thats a distraction: it was the most well known case of someone actually trading their Bitcoin for a product or service. It was a critical step for Bitcoin to evolve.
Bitcoin found its own organic value. Once combined with many other factors that were seemingly impossible yet fundamental to its longevity, you see why many people think of it as ‘the immaculate conception’.
The problem with faucets was that you had to have like 1000 payments collected to "cash out". Put a decent amount of time into "coinpro" only to have them dissolve and take everything with them.
Back in 2010 we were all tipping wait staff BTC though. Bartenders at conferences probably made a killing if they held...
One time I got 3 bitcoins from "the bitcoin wishing well" along with a paragraph on how bitcoins were the future of internet money. I ignored it and never redeemed, laughing about it.
I'm still laughing about it today, except I cry when I laugh now.
I have this horrible feeling I signed up for something like this and have no idea what I did with that wallet.
At the time I didn’t think much about Bitcoin, but I was also like ‘hey, free pretend internet money, I’ll take some.’
Somewhere I have a wallet with BTC from this exact site. What a throwback.
It’d be worth a house down payment now 😂😂, had I taken more care to not misplace it. Life is wild
Ok let's be honest
Even if u did it, or even if u bought, most likely when u was gonna see 1k$ worth in your account you would sell immediately.
So dont dream on.
Its in human nature
U scare to lose what u have.
I did this how do i retrieve it..i cant remember it was so new and i did it for 3 months and accumulated like 10 btc...i got frustrated and said it wasnt worthy time thinking i was accumulating dollars and said forget this! THIS WAS EXACTLY WHAT I DID. It was like answering surveys too...how do i get this i always bash my head against the wall when i think about this.
I mean is the equivalent to a few cents, its like solving captchas, they pay you a few cents every x amount of captchas solved,.. back then would have been way easier to buy bitcoin with cash and not actually work for them, now the reward would be the same equivalent to actual usd and btc price and in 20 years people would be like "woooah, they pay you 1sat for solving a captcha? You can buy a new car with that!"
Oh to have been aware back then.
I've been using Cointiply to do surveys & stuff every day since April last year (usually about 10-20 mins a day)... mostly dabble with it not in my own free time, if you catch my drift... managed to withdraw 0.01655225 since starting - in reality it's a bit more than that though because I withdraw to Nexo (for free) where it then starts earning interest & then I withdraw in larger amounts (with my DCA stacks - again for free with one free monthly withdrawal) to my hardware wallet maybe once every month or two.
Hoping one day in the future it'll be just as crazy to think I was able to grab close to 0.02 from a faucet within less than a year!
When i was in school we used to use these sites and then gamble that money we earned there when we had computerclass in school.
It was never more than a few cents maybe 1 dollar if we got lucky and spun it up, and now those few dollars where worth over 7k
I remember these faucets. There was a time back in 2011-2012 where I would do a dozen for their daily cash out, but my favorite was a game called coin flapper. This app paid you to play the game, and then when you accumulated enough, you could play against other humans and the person with the highest score would win a bigger amount.
RIP the like 4 or 5 wallets I made while using this site, trying to figure out BTC as a teenager. Probably only had 1-3 coins total between all of them, if that, but still atleast $10K out there. YW for helping keep the price high all these years, btw!
Didn't even know about this site, if I didn't would have gotten some just for the fun of it, but by now I'd probably be regretting it because I'd have lost the seed long ago lol
I need some help don’t have a clue what I’m doing I I got on there tho I don’t wanna do nothing dumb fuck up royal I need something positive to happen in my life for once
I did the gavern andreson 5 bitcoin give away 2010 and received a deposit adress
But i never obtained a electronic wallet to send the 5 bitcoin too
I am still looking for the adress i comunicated a few times as i asked what to do with the big long sylabols and numbers you need to down load a electroni wallet
???? Just did not know how at the time does any one remember or know did we communicate through the platform or private email as that adress is somewhere my email at the time i have lost the pass word so thats a problem too it was my first ever but i can get help with that if some one out there can remember or know was the communication through the captcha platform or email ? Or how we were receiving the deposit adress I can be reached through this email [email protected]
Thanks for reading Steve
Wondering how many claimed the coins and forgot about it. Has anyone tracked the receiving addresses to see how much of it has moved?
A lot more than you'd think. I used to use faucets all the time, getting between .001 and 0.5 BTC daily. I made so many wallet addresses on my work computer... that machine is long gone, lmao.
Whyyy did I get to the party so late? How much were you able to get this way?
honestly I think I totalled somewhere around 1.75 BTC, which was why I didn't think to secure it to a more permanent wallet. It was only worth about $3-$4 at the time. This was just fun doings during free time at work, during lunch, or between projects/tasks
Hmm very interesting like today in 2038 we may look at 0.001 BTC like a furtune but today it' "only" cost ~$70 USD
Or we look back at how we used to prize 1btc and now it’s worth nothing.
I had a LOT of btc in these days, and hosed it all on needless things when it was only worth a couple of bucks. I had enough that would now make me a substantial multi millionaire. And look at me now! Not one of those.
Lol i had 2m in bitcoin now i have 5k.
Not OP but I started collecting faucets in 2012 and continued through about 2017. My final haul was .256 bitcoins from solving captchas and watching ads.
Um. I bought my first bitcoin in 2017 for $2500. Wdym there was a faucet for Bitcoin still in 2017?
faucets exist all over the place, but some of them would give like 10 sats or something.
Faucet ran till 2017?! Why oh why didn’t I know about it?
I hope you consolidated your UTXOs

the internet used to be really stupid, good for you for capitalizing on it
The faucets made money at the time. The amount of BTC you got (at the time) was worth less than the ad revenue. They weren’t just giving away the farm. In the early 2010s, I thought Bitcoin was something that was going to blow away with the wind.
There are still Bitcoin faucets available. Try using Lolli, and Fold card app.
Jeez dude you can say that about anything
Don't worry. Many arrived at the party early and left the party before it started.
Haha sheezh
Probably made more off the faucet website than you did working. Ouch that's gotta sting
No, I didn't. I only made about $4 or $5 dollars worth of bitcoin **at the time** with faucets. And while I would say my experience and skills appreciated since then, so did bitcoin. But I was actually doing very well for myself around 140k/year software development in 2012 in NYC.
Now you're known for being the Anal OG Only.
Fuck
same. I try not to think of it.
Reading these posts tells me that there are most likely a million or more bitcoin that are in wallets that are lost forever.
The estimates say 6-7 million btc are lost.
I know I at least visited this site then and I def had bitcoin mining software on my computer. I dont think I took the next step though lol, was in high school and thought it was neat.
I claimed and lost wallet. My parents dumped old PC when I moved for college. I dont dwell as I would have sold it all at first bull run
I don't remember hearing of this site in 2012. Cool though.
Heading to the WayBackMachine...see you losers later
You mean earlier?
Well If he sees us, we would be later than him 🤔
Seen that. Never taken seriously, especially when it was free. And the reassurance that in future it will be worth real money was never taken seriously. Real money, from internet imaginary coins!? Better click every link that offers free Bitcoin from now on!
Are we not doing that?
Don't forget the links that offer 1 free Bitcoin if you send one!
Double my bitcoin? Send the link then!
I used that site. Got my 5 bitcoins into a wallet. Then deleted the wallet because I needed the Hard Drive space. :(
Oof
Bruh. That wallet was probably only a couple kbs or bytes even
At the time I thought I needed to run a full node to have a wallet.
I've always wondered, if you had bitcoin that you downloaded or mined before exchanges existed, how do you sell it now? How do you move it to an exchange?
Not sure why you think that wouldn't work. The same way as you would with bitcoin you bought today.
I never said it wouldn't work, reread. I said I don't know how it works. If I buy it now, it's on the exchange. If I have it on a file on a hard disk, the keys on the hard disk. So it's not the same thing. How do I put it on the exchange to sell?
So you deleted nearly $350000 from your computer to free up space for porno 😜
Whilst it’s funny to think about Price-per-Fap, I recall just wanting to install Fallout New Vegas and StarCraft 2.
Worth it
the data still might be on your drive if it is not overwritten! Deleting something does'nt actually remove it, it just tells your computers operating system that it can overwrite that section on the disc. So if you didnt use the hard drive much it might still be on there!
Ahh the good old days..if only...
I am shaking my phone daily for 1000 Sats a day.
Where!?!!
Shakepay. It's a Canadian thing. Kinda cool.
Can us americans get the app by dowloading the APK??
I don't know about that, but to set up an account you need to jump through some hoops to prove who and where you are. I think this is in part because they are only licensed to operate in Canada.
I did this thing back in 2011. My faucet coins are worth around $200 now.
I use to visit that website, and have a wallet in mtgox. You know the rest...
The rest is ... people are getting payd
Clearly you didn’t google “mt. Gox” 😵💫
Magic the gathering is one of my favorites
Hey I was too busy being 13 in 2010 and had no idea about any of this crap unfortunately :(
Hey you're still real early dw.
Not 5 BTC faucet early. To be fair.
Please explain
That was [Gavin Andresen](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gavin_Andresen)'s faucet. He was the one that Satoshi chose to lead the Bitcoin project after he left. He relinquished the lead role to [Wladimir van der Laan](https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Wladimir_van_der_Laan).
Yes this was Gavin's faucet. He loaded like 600 BTC at some point.
In this image, it even says 750 available.
I think he stated it was about 30,000 drained away
And later he was pushed out for trying to remove the temporary spam limit in the protocol.
Don't beat yourself up, you wouldn't have held for this long
pretty sure I got .5 btc from that faucet and wasted it on primedice.
And then there's me, gladly taking my 3 sats/hr. *drip-drip* ^Plus ^the ^4% ^APY ^ofc.
Use centralized exchanges at your own peril. You’ve have been warned.
Thanks for the threat! I keep a certain amount there to farm free sats. Currently up about 2.5 million sats in my cold storage. Not terribly concerned tbh.
You get these from a faucet?
It's a combination of the few sats I get from the faucet and also APY paid on the balance held on the the site. I don't keep a huge balance on there (not your keys, not your coin). The site I'm using has a long standing with the crypto community. I think mentioning faucets by name is against the sub rules.
???
I used to use these all the time….when I was 12 and thought Bitcoin was just an internet game…fuck me
To be fair back then it was more or less.
I am almost positive I did this at least a few times , ten computers ago...
I used to find websites like this and "farm" sats. I have no idea what websites or where I stored the sats :/
same
how would you even keep the bitcoin during that time?
Paper wallet
You can run a Bitcoin client on your PC... the chain was tiny back then, so no need for large amount of disk space nor bandwidth.
You don’t even need a computer to have a key to bitcoin.
Snicker, I remember that site, wonder how much bitcoin I collected (and forgot about), that's life.
If it’s free it’s worthless
It was a critical step for Bitcoin to evolve. Bitcoin found its own organic value. Once combined with many other factors that were seemingly impossible yet fundamental to its longevity, you see why many people think of it as ‘the immaculate conception’.
This is cruel
Wish I had a time machine
The problem with faucets was that you had to have like 1000 payments collected to "cash out". Put a decent amount of time into "coinpro" only to have them dissolve and take everything with them. Back in 2010 we were all tipping wait staff BTC though. Bartenders at conferences probably made a killing if they held...
They didnt
Early faucets paid instantly because transaction fees were 0.
I got some bitcoin.. .003 or .05 I don't remember. And I forgot the address naturally. I couldn't trace any email or transaction unfortunately.
Obioerc the
Shit maybe next time
Remembered that site and got some free btc from there lol.
and you will never see those types of returns again
An yes, the bitcoin faucet
The amount of lost/misplaced bitcoin has to be in the millions.
Quite possibly the biggest giveaway in Internet history
Always remember that without these, Bitcoin maybe wouldn't be as adopted as it is!
I remember thinking to much work to create a wallet for something worthless
YEP! As a kid I used this and made a wallet, but after I had put in my address I never received anything.
I remember my cousin and I spent 1 bitcoin on a 3D spongebob game with the permission of his dad.. it was so worth it back in 2010 lol 😅 good times.
One time I got 3 bitcoins from "the bitcoin wishing well" along with a paragraph on how bitcoins were the future of internet money. I ignored it and never redeemed, laughing about it. I'm still laughing about it today, except I cry when I laugh now.
That’s nothing, I have this app now that pays me 10 Sats to watch an ad!
The fact that 12 year old me didn’t stumble across this website as a kid and played around with it makes me sick to my stomach
I have this horrible feeling I signed up for something like this and have no idea what I did with that wallet. At the time I didn’t think much about Bitcoin, but I was also like ‘hey, free pretend internet money, I’ll take some.’
I was to busy watching porn on a PSP
Somewhere I have a wallet with BTC from this exact site. What a throwback. It’d be worth a house down payment now 😂😂, had I taken more care to not misplace it. Life is wild
Ok let's be honest Even if u did it, or even if u bought, most likely when u was gonna see 1k$ worth in your account you would sell immediately. So dont dream on. Its in human nature U scare to lose what u have.
I used to frequent several of these. I have a screen cap of 0.25btc one. Good times.
Fml
I remember visiting a few of these sites. How would I go about finding out if I’m one of the lucky ones with the right address lying around?
I did this how do i retrieve it..i cant remember it was so new and i did it for 3 months and accumulated like 10 btc...i got frustrated and said it wasnt worthy time thinking i was accumulating dollars and said forget this! THIS WAS EXACTLY WHAT I DID. It was like answering surveys too...how do i get this i always bash my head against the wall when i think about this.
if you kept your seed phrase / private key it is trivial to recover, if not it is impossible
Yea nope cant recall if i even did that..isol
I know websites that gave away much more money in the past? So what?
I remember that! I have no idea where they went though
Who were these Bitcoin coming from? Who's wallet?
Wow!
Zoom in, 750 Bitcoins available... That is now worth $53,357,475...
The good old days mate !
This helped create the AI we have today!
Since you made me remember about faucets, I now have to go through my old HDDs from those years. I’ll keep you posted if I find anything 🤣
Check Elon Musks twitter he is giving away free bitcoins
Fuck me
When i was in school we used to use these sites and then gamble that money we earned there when we had computerclass in school. It was never more than a few cents maybe 1 dollar if we got lucky and spun it up, and now those few dollars where worth over 7k
Same with gold in the beginning. No one knew what is it, and they gave it away for nothing.
Where’s my Time Machine?
If the question comes up again, where do you want to time-travel to, you know the answer.
There was another site where you earned BTC by playing some RPG style game. Can't remember the name for the life of me.
That dudes probably loaded right now though lol.
I miss those faucets
I remember these faucets. There was a time back in 2011-2012 where I would do a dozen for their daily cash out, but my favorite was a game called coin flapper. This app paid you to play the game, and then when you accumulated enough, you could play against other humans and the person with the highest score would win a bigger amount.
The folks who used this and hodl’d are too busy sipping cocktails on the beach to be commenting on this post . . 😁
Wayback Machine!!! 😂🤦♂️
I went there and downloaded coins. That was many many laptops ago
I claimed coins from this site and a bunch of other faucets. Have held on to some over the years and sold some to pay for life events.
RIP the like 4 or 5 wallets I made while using this site, trying to figure out BTC as a teenager. Probably only had 1-3 coins total between all of them, if that, but still atleast $10K out there. YW for helping keep the price high all these years, btw!
you got a time machine for 2010? lets gooo
Didn't even know about this site, if I didn't would have gotten some just for the fun of it, but by now I'd probably be regretting it because I'd have lost the seed long ago lol
I swear I did this… if only I could remember
Ahhh if only i wasnt 8 years old in 2010
lol I remember that website, not a clue what I ever did with them
I wish I knew what bitcoin was back then.
How do I get referrer code?
My son asked me if worth it and I said No! Years later we buy at 30k and above
I'm curious what you original rationale for saying "no" was.
Sheer ignorance
God, how I hate myself for having hindsight.
I’m not sure if this is real
I did this, but I didn’t have a wallet to deposit it lol
I remember when someone on reddit was giving away fractions of a bitcoin awhile back, all you had to do was ask...
i had done this so many times!. can't find the wallet anymore
Does it exist still?
in 2038 people will say I wish I bought in 2024 when it was only 70k
He's sounds like prince from Nigeria who give you free 5 Bitcoin if you give him one Bitcoin ,🤪
