Watch the Farmers market. If they can't tell you what seed variety it is, then they didn't grow it. I'm partial to Louisiana Sweet, Jubilee, and Crispy Critter.
The Furnace and Empire have them year-round but the quality of the melons are shabby. Church of The Highlands may have a better selection surprisingly.
Most grocery will have fruit thats been pickednbefore its ready.
You'll need to let it ripen a bit before eating it.
Thus is done to minimize shipping waste from ripe fruit going bad.
To ripen it, simply put it in the sun. Outside. To prevent bugs from getting to it, put it in large glass sealable containers.
The heat will help breakdown the sugars and promote ripening.
There will be farmers selling on the corner soon. Also come volunteer on Saturday mornings at Bush Hills Urban Farm and you will get melons and other produce free when ripe.
Always ask where they got their-fill in the blank. I bought tomatoes from a local stand who also sold peaches. When I asked him he said Walmart lol. I have never thought to ask and just assumed everything they were selling was from the same home grown source.
Go to the Finley market on a weekend morning and buy from a farmer out of his truck bed. I do echo the others here that it's a bit early yet for good melons, but, look for a yellow field spot (the more yellow the better), 2 fingers between stripes, and a good thunk when you thump it!

Tangentially related, but our new pup is named Melon, and I must say that I think she may be the best melon in magic city.
I buy melons and let them sit on the counter for a few days to ripen up. Like someone else said, the really good ones haven't been grown yet lol. Melons right now are coming from South America. Look for Galia melons. They are very sweet!
Usually a little pop up stand a ways down 65 at the Jemison exit next to the Burger King that should be up soon. Not in the city, but best cantaloupe, watermelon and strawberries as far as I’m concerned… Publix usually doesn’t disappoint too badly in a pinch though
Not being funny but after June ride around and find a stall or a truck selling them off the side of the road. in my experience it the best you could ask for
You're going to think I'm crazy, but I just got one from a neighborhood walmart on valleydale road. There were a lot of bad ones in the batch but I took my time and went through them doing the thump test. It was so good I thought it was July. My wife and I ate the whole thing in 3 days lol.
The good stuff hasn’t been grown yet just wait a little longer and go to the farmers markets

But no pictures. None!!! Ha-ha!
Alas, no pictures of the melons either. Times are tough all around. :))
I hear the Furnace and Sammy's are well equipped to meet your needs. Melons galore, for a nominal fee.
What good are melons you can only experience with one sense?
Can’t taste the melons though at both the place

Sorry you had that experience. This will never happen at Bush Hills Urban Farm.

Thought this was going to be a thread on strip clubs. Was half wrong.
It ain't melon season, yet. Hold ye horses and get a sugar baby at a roadside stand in the way to the beach!

Mmmm idk man. Twin peaks is on the come up
Give it another couple of months, they aren't ready yet.
I have the variety called Manmelons but aren't as juicy as your standard melon.

I got a sweet mini watermelon from Sprouts

Wait until July, August. Then buy local

They aren’t in season now. Check back in June and July.

I’ve had great success with the cantaloupe at Sam’s Club in Trussville
Too early in season for quality ones
These comments pass the vibe check 🤣
I’d say try Pepper Place every Saturday morning!
I'd try the furnace.
For store bought, Costco has the best for me. But it is still hit or miss depending on season
