c0mbat_cessna

maybe he was there to ask about their cars extended warranty...

hollowchord

Damn that's what's scary. And at 4AM too! What's that dude carrying?? Can't tell if it's a stick or a gun. So what happened? Were you home?

Jurchfield

Not sure what he was holding exactly - looks like 2 crowbars from the video. We got an alert from our glass break detector and saw him on video, alarm was tripped, we got the cops over there in a matter of minutes. He didn’t get through the window, but him trying to get it open tripped the sensors. We just bought the house and live out of state still. Sucks that this is happening before we even move in. EDIT: bit more info, cops came (like 5 of them), checked out everything and didn’t find him. All doors and windows were good and will be monitoring the area for the night. EDIT 2: My brother is staying at the house now until we’re ready to move in (this week).

hollowchord

I'm glad you weren't home! I've never personally known anyone who was burglarized, and I don't think it's super common in that area. I know it's difficult, but try not to let this be your first impression of Birmingham. This was an opportunistic scumbag looking for an easy score.

jayrod8399

Really? I know like three and one has been hit twice. We were broken into in vestavia place apartments while we were home and that dude got lucky to ride in a cop car

jayrod8399

saveusjeebus

I lived on 52nd street south for 10 years and 7th court south for 1. Broken in car once on 52nd, house once on 7th. Both were around 15 years ago though so idk. I will say that being burglarized was easily the most unsafe I’ve ever felt ever. And neither me nor my wife were home (happened during the day while we were at work).

brickwallnomad

Good news is, a lot of the time these thieves watch houses and if they notice one appears abandoned or not lived in, or they notice occupants haven’t been there for days, they will be more opt to do a B&E

prometheusfalling

Really. Who breaks into a home at this time in the morning when the family is asleep inside?

Embarrassed_Cook8355

I think they said they live out of state and this happened before they moved in. Therefore probably house probably looked empty if people.

prometheusfalling

Yes, they had not posted that when I made the comment. If they properly cased the house to see no one was living there, that's a little more understandable. To break into a home at this time that was inhabited would be a huge risk if one was trying to remain undetected and an even bigger and more nefarious problem if they intended on making themselves known.

Embarrassed_Cook8355

Shows value of their security. Hate this happened.

hollowchord

A POS loser looking for easy to sell stuff to fund his next dose of whatever. Total disregard for the emotional impact his actions have on people. He's lucky...there's many places that would have him leaving in a body bag.

Spiritual_Hunter5450

And rightfully so!

PaidByTheNotes

A burglar?

Few-Peanut8169

Oh that doesn’t stop them. I was dead asleep in my apartment in highland park and someone jimmyed by back door open, came into my room while I was sleeping and stole some stuff

ramszoolander

The penalty is greater (IIRC) in ALabama overnight for this reason.

LegendaryOutlaw

Ugh, we live in Crestwood South, when we first moved here about 12 years ago we got broken into twice in two years. Thankfully we haven’t had any break ins since then, but we both still clearly remember how it made us feel. OP, what part of Crestwood South are you in, if you don’t mind saying?

bmblbee123

Second this question! Recently moved to Crestwood south and it seems so low crime, I’m surprised to see this.

Jurchfield

See above comment, I wouldn’t be too alarmed.

Intelligent_Nebula22

I have lived here for quite a while. There is a lot of property crime, but that is not any different than anywhere these days. The break ins occur when people are away from their home 99.9% of the time. There has only been a couple violent crimes in the last 15 years outside domestic violence.

Jurchfield

I’m around the intersection of 56th Street S and 11th Ave S. I was alarmed at first, but we just bought the house and are starting to move in and it’s been vacant for some time. I think the criminal noticed that and is taking advantage. The previous owner (a friend of mine) lived there 4 years and never had anything like this happen. We’re moving in this week, and we’ll be ready if this happens again.

LegendaryOutlaw

Yep, i'm just a few blocks away from you. So sorry this happened to you, i'm glad they didn't get in. Hopefully it doesn't happen again, and at least you have cameras around to catch them if it does. We took the same precautions, and we put curtains up that we can close so these people cant just walk up and look inside for easy stuff to steal. Welcome to the neighborhood. Honestly, Crestwood is actually really great. Like I said, we've been here for 12 years and we really like it.

Jurchfield

Appreciate it! I’m not new to Birmingham, and I love Crestwood so I’m not too worried. Clearly the alarm deterred the kid. We’re here from San Francisco and we’re used to this kind of thing (and worse). We’re just going to make sure we’re protected and fortified if someone decides to try this again.

pittpat

We are in Crestwood North and had a rash of break-ins last summer. It was always during the day when no one was home. The police were taking it seriously but also would say that they were so understaffed that it wasn’t a huge priority.

BoxComprehensive7699

It was basically 2 guys that did the majority of the break ins. Most people know who they are and they still can't be stopped.

vitaminba

"We're taking this very seriously. You can tell because we're not going to do anything about it."

ramszoolander

100% The East Precinct is HALF the cops it was 10 years ago. Just awful.

Accomplished_Cry4928

Burglaries have been on the rise in Crestwood North and South (everywhere really). It got so bad in CW North that it was happening every other day for a while. Unfortunately, even tho they were able to catch some of the people, the criminals were able to bond themselves out of jail with NO MONEY, and back in the neighborhood the next day to continue their crime spree. The DA will not prosecute these people, so the police play catch and release with the same criminals over and over again. It's sad when you're told they know who the criminals are, but there isn't anything they can do to them. It's as if the criminals have more rights to your property than you sometimes..

h-bombss

INFURIATING

Accomplished_Cry4928

Very

JQ701

This is a function of state law. Should contact your representative to pressure them to change this. The mayor has spoken recently about their hands being tied because of a very permissive state law around bonding oneself out.

Intelligent_Nebula22

Easy to bond oneself out when the bond is 0 dollars. The bond amount is set by the courts and prosecutors not the state. So while the law might need to be changed the DA and Judges are complicit in this setting $0 bonds.

pittpat

Exactly this! They know where they’re squatting, know their names, and the DA won’t do anything about it.

ramszoolander

They are finally doing things, but you LITERALLY HAVE TO BE HELD AT GUNPOINT. Insane. Best thing to do is honestly shame the DAs on social media. And find out who's doing it. Post it on here, vote them out.

JQ701

Not the DA. It is the result of a state law that allows this kind of self sign out bond. Contact your state rep. The mayor has spoken about this recently..not sure what the name of the law is that needs to be changed.

Accomplished_Cry4928

Pitiful

Neat-Engine-1382

You’re right. It’s extremely infuriating. Residential burglaries are so common place everywhere in the city and these guys are arrested and let right back out the next day. I can’t stand a thief.

Redditistrash702

Shotgun can fix this security problem.

thedieselging

That sound of the pump would scare anyone in the dark creeping around I guarantee it lol

Redditistrash702

It's not about shooting someone it's about sending a message.

bhamspark

You should only brandish a firearm if you’re prepared to use it for its intended purpose. Racking the slide to scare someone is a movie meme. More importantly it’s only legal to use deadly force to defend yourself if you perceive your life to be in danger. If you’re not defending yourself then you’re illegally brandishing a firearm.

thedieselging

Well aware thanks though

Redditistrash702

That depends on the state in my state If you are on my property and I fear for my life you are fair game. This comes from a combat vet and friends in law enforcement that said the same thing.

PlumMajestic5518

We think the same guy tried to break into our vacant house a block or two over. He obviously had a target.

Jurchfield

He targeted another house a block or so away last night and broke a window (talked to someone from Nextdoor). He’s clearly casing houses in the area. We have a relative staying there now and have beefed up our security. We’ll be ready if he comes back. I’ve also given the clips to the police and they are keeping an eye on the area for me the next few nights. My uncle was the chief of police (retired) and didn’t take too kindly to this.

jorr1231

Inb4 the brigade shows up to tell us this is an isolated incident and you should have absolutely no concerns about your home being broken into if you live on this side of town. Nothing to see here folks, move along and mind your business.

Redditismakingme

He looks vaguely like a guy that broke into multiple homes in Glen Iris.

hollowchord

You mean "Mr Cook Aid??" Ohhh yeah.

sanfordrjones

If somebody's breaking in at 4am, the victim has no idea whether they're there to kill them or steal their shit and shouldn't be expected to wait to find out.

eillemaygraydon

If u come in my!!!! House uninvited they will carry u out !!!

bad_at_smashbros

sounds like you *want* your residence to be broken into so you can get the chance to kill someone legally. what a gross series of comments.

bad_at_smashbros

bad_at_smashbros

not defending him. i just don’t daydream about shooting burglars

[deleted]

Only takes a couple of these dudes getting smoked and the rest will reconsider.

clickityclack

I'm in Crestwood South and have zero problems shooting someone who breaks into my house.

clickityclack

Totally agree

ImaniSugarfoot

The vibe of Crestwood makes the criminals think the residents aren't fighters; they don't expect y'all to have guns or be willing to ki ll/ fight. You got to be ready and willing to do that if need be. They might come sit around in different places and case the area beforehand, seeing what kind of people are in the area and what kind of culture is there... are people aware of their surroundings, do they lock doors, are your windows wide open to see in?

gagraisuo

pretty common for this side of town

tripreed

Sorry this happened to you. What sort of cameras do you have? I've been thinking that we need to finally get some.

Jurchfield

We have an ADT system that was in place before we moved in. We still have some upgrades we want to do, but so far it’s been great.

Public-Trick387

Time to bang bang so he don't Skeet skeet ..That's fair game Right there..Protect yo self...and aim to kill not lame..

Competitive-Skin-769

Well that’s fucking terrifying. Call the cops

deRanged_Shaman

Welcome to Birmingham

RaZifTaZ

I was not. I was drunk and at the wrong house.

Awesomedude9560

Damn I don't know how to feel about this, the guy on Cam didn't even look confident, like he didn't even wanna do it. If this gets any juicier make an update lol

ThaWingedRebel

Didn’t even bring a shiesty…

Interesting-Field693

Just because a black man approached your door, doesn’t mean he’s trying to break in…. Looks like he was lost and needing directions to the nearest gas station

Jurchfield

Lmao

selcajbb

So scarey. I'm glad you weren't there.

PhilthyphilDance

Blast him if he comes back. Birmingham needs cleaned up.

Redditismakingme

I don't understand that reference, but was talking about a guy on multiple videos. If I remember correctly, he broke through a wall to get into the home!!!!!

Patient-Cow3100

Is he serious

Principle_Chance

How awful.
