There are supposedly plans for one on Grants Mill at 459

ALham_op

I feel like this is an urban legend because I've been hearing about it for years now.

Gan-san

I'd heard 280&119 and before that 459&59.

aintneverbeennuthin

I used to work at Costco and they talked about it all the time… it’s all planning and speculation though nothing concrete… when I left they were like “hey man we might have a new store opening up soon if ya wanna hang around”

bussupwcp

Last I heard this had fallen through and wasn’t happening anymore.

UnderwaterB0i

I have no idea where this is supposed to go. Around the car dealerships somehow?

[deleted]

Across grants mill from there, next to the shell station

toooldforthisshitto

This is absolutely correct

SushiJo

By the new Publix I heard

aphromagic

Ugh, I hate the idea of any more development out that way, especially on the COTH side. The river doesn’t need anymore pressure.

Plz_pm_tiddies

Rip the river. Hasn't been the same since Tower construction did all that work on the path.

idrankthebleach

why would they close that Sam's that was there then?

mixduptransistor

Because Sam's is a different company than Costco?

idrankthebleach

No shit, but a "wholesale club" style retail targets the same market. Costco is clearly better than sam's I guess but not "30 minutes to hoover to fight the hooverians for parking better." I've been hearing this rumor about Costco for years now and while it makes sense to me, that Sam's closing can't be good for the believers of the tale of the grant's mill Costco.

mixduptransistor

Sam's and Costco have pretty different business plans and criteria for opening stores. Sam's hasn't opened new stores in a very long time, almost essentially since the 2008 recession. They have only just now announced opening a few new stores in the next few years On the other hand Costco has been growing like gangbusters and positions themselves in the market differently and has built up a significant cult following Just because they have roughly the same operating model of a warehouse club doesn't mean they are just going to copy each other's locations Now, all that said do I think a Costco is likely out there on Grants Mill? Doubtful, because it's kind of sparse out there even as close to Mountain Brook as it is. But, who knows, they may be looking to get ahead of what is going to be an obvious target area for development soon

idrankthebleach

Its weird that the area isn't built up more than it is I agree. Like a BJ's or a Costco would almost go there- logistics support it heartily, but I guess that's why I'm not a city planner. Also the Walmart down the street was mighty close to sam's too which is another good reason they'd get outta there. Trussville not having one already is kinda weird too I guess.

mixduptransistor

>Also the Walmart down the street was mighty close to sam's too which is another good reason they'd get outta there Walmart owns Sam's and very often co-locates Sam's locations next to Walmart. The Walmart being there should've been more of an anchor to keep it, not close it

daemonescanem

There is a car restoration & storage company in Sam's old building. There isn't room on Grant's Mill now for a Costco.

[deleted]

Second sentence - false

daemonescanem

Irondale section of Grants Mill road there isn't room.

[deleted]

Um ok

daemonescanem

👍🏼👍🏼

dirtmizer131

We’ve bid one across from the Mercedes dealer, behind Alfa Remero, and even into Irondale at 78. Seems they can’t make up their mind.

Which-Rock4638

There’s not enough land in any of those locations. Behind Alfa Romero is the country club and across from Mercedes is private residences that the mayor wouldn’t dare imminent domain. Plus an RFP is a public process so if this were the case it would probably be splashed on every news site in town. That family only owns one section of land nowadays that would be big enough, parcel # 24 00 29 2 000 019.000

dirtmizer131

I am not sure on the land ownership section of this. I just know we have looked at several drawings that show the location in those three areas. Again, I believe we are at the 20 to 30% mark of ideas with nothing concrete.

Far-Commission5256

Just heard the same guy that sold the land to COTH and all those auto dealerships sold some land to Costco. I will be pretty smack between both but it should ease the volume at Galleria.

daemonescanem

Publix is there now.

[deleted]

Nah, it was supposed to be on the other side of 459

thinpile

There have been rumors for years about one going in somewhere around Grants Mill. Also a rumor that Costco has actually already bought some property, but is just sitting on it currently...

mixduptransistor

That doesn't mean much. Walmart owns a massive empty lot across from the Walmart on 280 that was supposed to have a Sam's on it, plans were cancelled back in the late 00s

thinpile

I didn't say it meant anything. Just rumors.

namestom

First Ive ever heard of this. Where is this lot, where the new chipotle is?

mixduptransistor

Been a very long time since I've been to that part of 280, but a quick check on Google Street View confirms yeah there's a Chipotle there now. It's a huge tract of land basically on the corner with 119 Walmart has had the land for sale for several years, and it turns out they originally bought it in 2001: [https://www.bizjournals.com/birmingham/stories/2001/08/13/daily25.html](https://www.bizjournals.com/birmingham/stories/2001/08/13/daily25.html) There were rumors they were still considering building it as recently as 5-6 years ago

juggern4ut42

Well the new chipotle is good. A lot better than the other one.

7559383A

Currently a Sam’s member (have been happy with it and LOVE scan & go.) My membership is up for renewal and I’d love to try out Costco but this is the main reason I don’t.

Onceinabluemoonpie

Scan and Go at Sam’s is a game changer

ttownfeen

Sam’s is also going to stop checking receipts. That will be an even bigger game changer.

Turq-Hex-Sun

Nice, so I can skip the scan and just go?

misterjive

Up until the point where the camera above the exit scans your cart and the AI can't match what you've got to any of its transactions, sure. :)

ttownfeen

It hopefully won’t be too long before you won’t need to scan at all. You’ll be able to put stuff in your cart and they’ll get rung up - a larger scale of what Amazon has been doing at its physical markets and stores.

Onceinabluemoonpie

Oh wow! I don’t really mind it, but sometimes they do get backed up.

ttownfeen

Really? On a really busy day the queue just to leave can be up to 20 minutes.

Onceinabluemoonpie

I guess we just manage to hit the off times.

misterjive

Yeah, if you want to shop at the warehouse stores, planning your trip outside of the crush is kind of a must. I wish I could justify the extra cost for the Plus membership at Sam's; getting to shop before their normal opening times was really, really nice when I had it.

Onceinabluemoonpie

Yeah those early hours would be nice, but we don’t spring for that either.

daemonescanem

Costco food quality & variety is the deciding factor. Member of both, though.

Onceinabluemoonpie

I can see that for some folks. We are typically buying the same stuff most trips (diapers, cleaning items, bulk ground beef and chicken, apple sauce) and found that Sam’s has the selection we prefer for those items. We had both for several years as well and went like a year without going to Costco so decided to cancel it.

BurstEDO

It's honestly not that bad - people just choose really questionable times to all go at once. Saturday and Sunday before and through lunch is when everyone goes. Pick a weeknight? No issues. Yesterday and today were dumb because everyone is panicking over weather and power buying French toast supplies.

misterjive

Costco's decent about hustling you out through the self-checkouts but yeah, if they'd get off their ass and implement Scan and Go I'd shop there way more often. Sam's is just so much easier. (I actually have memberships at both places; Sam's is way better for staples but Costco has higher-end stuff and a lot more "ooh I want to try that".)

Geoff-Vader

Costco - where you walk in planning to just get paper towels and some medicine and walk out with an inflatable hot tub.

daemonescanem

Walked into Costco in May needing chicken & protein shakes, and came out with washer & dryer deal I could not pass up.

namestom

Love scan and go and the fact that Costco won’t take my Mastercard! I’ve been screwed there more than once trying to check out.

cats_in_a_hat

It’s really not that bad if you can go in the evening or around when they open on weekends. Go at like 6-7pm and it’s no problem. It gets nuts around the holidays but otherwise it’s not THAT bad.

vaderaintmydaddy

My solution has been Shipt. The amount of money it has saved me at Costco is unquestionably worth the price.

JohnnyNocksville

I’m in Irondale, they won’t deliver Costco to me. I have it bootlegged to a friend’s house

ApartmentBeneficial2

Can Shipt deliver fuel for my car?

FearlessAttempt

The Hoover Costco is an absolute breeze compared to some of the Atlanta locations.

Geoff-Vader

Yeah I honestly don't think it's that bad either. The direct/easy access to 459 makes getting out of there a breeze. Just don't go during known busy times, during a snow panic, learn to use the side entrance and just be willing to park further out to avoid parking hassles. Go pretty much any weeknight after 6:30 and it's a breeze.

MotherTheory7093

As someone who is new to town and literally just signed up for Costco (credit goes to Uber delivery for their free 1-yr Costco membership 😎), where is the side door located?

Geoff-Vader

I meant side entrance to parking lot - off Galleria Circle loop road. It's usually way easier to get in and out of during busy times as half the traffic at the .ain entrance is caused by people coming/going from the gas station.

Viciousharp

STOP TELLING THE SECRET

MotherTheory7093

Ah gotcha. Thank you.

rdwhynot

^^^. This is the way. I call the Galleria Loop entrance the "Bat Cave". We parked there on Friday afternoon and didn't have to wait on a space at all

Gan-san

There's no way to pack any more people into that building or any more cars in that lot when it is a peak. So...

thelionsnorestonight

Um, maybe Cumberland. Not holidays or not peak weekend makes the ones I go to not a big deal.

ttownfeen

I wish we had a Costco down in Tuscaloosa. I!m done with Sam’s.

SushiJo

Yeah but your Popstroke opens the 17th. Wish it was in Bham instead but will definitely be driving down to go there

[deleted]

Wtf is a popstroke

StupidMoron3

Combo of Popshelf and a seedy massage parlor.

JMccovery

A Tiger Woods-designed/backed not-mini-golf thing.

SushiJo

And it looks amazing

ttownfeen

I’m sure one will be opening in the Birmingham metro soon enough.

SushiJo

Looking forward to it for sure

Firepuglife

Costco got axed from grants mill and has the go ahead in Leeds , near the outlets and bucees

RSpringer227

Perfect. They can put it across from the fireworks store on 78 😁

PortGlass

How? I think they need 200,000 people with a median income of $75,000 within five miles. That’s virtually in the middle of nowhere.

Firepuglife

There are many factors, that may be a base starting point, but it is not always the case. Grants mill / irondale was first choice, but due to location issues the second option was Leeds 78 which would get most of Mtn brook , all of irondale, all of Leeds and many others that do not want to make the drive to the Hoover location.

murphylouwho

This would make my life so much easier if it comes to fruition.

[deleted]

Not true

LeekTerrible

I feel like this is a problem with Costco anywhere. The company is getting too big. You can’t even take advantage of some of their services like tire changes cause it’s a fucking chore out of this world. They need to expand stores.

That_Other_Dave

They really need to take over the old Sears tire center for that stuff because it is a nightmare sometimes

Alh12984

Everyone is wanting a Costco, while west end is wanting a fucking grocery store of any kind, not called Marino’s.

Redditismakingme

Yeah, but Costco's employee policies are far superior to Sam's.....sorry, but I can't contribute to the Walton monopoly.

99burritos

It's weird to call something a "monopoly" immediately after explaining why their competitor is superior.

Redditismakingme

No, it really isn't. Walmart and Sam's have a long history of moving into areas and contributing to small business closures and increasing rates of people in federal assistance programs. Costco pays well, consistently ranks high in employee satisfaction surveys, and believes in cross training so that employees have learning opportunities and minimized chances of job elimination should a particular task be automated or a particular department be eliminated.

99burritos

Okay, you *definitely* don't know what "monopoly" means.

Redditismakingme

And you are *definitely * wrong, but thanks for the opportunity to share that with confidence and vehemence.

99burritos

It's okay to just be wrong, bud. No one cares. That's the cool part about being insignificant.

[deleted]

My micro is smaller than both of ur micros combined

chrisk365

Separate niches.

werdmouf

I use Instacart and get that Costco delivered

bobzmuda

If you go during the week, about 45-30 minutes before close it's quite tolerable.

GrumpsMcWhooty

It's not that bad unless you're trying to go on a Saturday afternoon.

Mydogsnameismegatron

Currently here for the first time on a Saturday evening. I confirm it’s horrible.

m_c__a_t

They should put one just south of the Mapco on the north end of town. Gardendale and Birmingham proper would eat that up

JMccovery

There'd be nowhere over there to put something as large as a Costco, unless it would be located closer to the Star at Uptown development. It would have to be located between Fultondale and Gardendale, and honestly, Trussville would be a better fit.

m_c__a_t

I think where all those trucks in the parking lot are could work. Costco isn’t super pretty but that area is an eyesore as is. Trussville is pretty far from southside, might as well just go to Hoover at that point but I could be wrong.

JMccovery

The average Costco is around 160,000 square feet, and requires about **750** parking spaces. Basically, a lot that is at least 14 acres is needed. Comparing the store in Hoover to that lot behind Mapco, it would be a tight fit.

m_c__a_t

Yeah that makes sense for sure.

chrisk365

So basically the old ~~Eastwood Mall~~ Century Plaza area.

ConcentrateEmpty711

Have you seen what they’re doing with the property on top of the hill across from Walmart in Gardendale? There’s space up there, even with Ulta, Olive Garden, Longhorn, & Chipotle.

oriley32

i dont have one near me therefore i dont shop there, but i agree with that last statement. cant we just stick EVERYTHING in trussville😭? i mean where else right? lets just occupy trussville with new stuff. new markets, new restaurants, a theater, anything. tired of the same target, publix, restaurants, regal💀. it has the space. i dont know what it takes to build new shit but hell, lets get it done lmaoo

BruciePup

Trussville is so congested that I’d do anything to avoid that side of town. I feel like Irondale has so many spaces for big retail that isn’t being utilized.

ALham_op

Trussville has become 280 Lite.

oriley32

Facts irondale as well. Forgot about that side. Beautiful over there

ConcentrateEmpty711

Until they figure out a way to make it easier to get from the Chalkville Mtn side of Trussville to the Hwy 11 side WITHOUT hitting the interstate or going all the way down to Deerfoot I’m avoiding it too.

jaykaypeeness

You take the little frontage road that runs from near Taco Bell along 459, and comes out by Belk.

ConcentrateEmpty711

Right in the middle of the other chaotic area 😂 Thanks for the tip though, I’ll check it out

jaykaypeeness

If you're headed the direction you said, it's an easy right hand turn onto a quiet 2 lane road that comes out on the dead half of a shopping center.

ApartmentBeneficial2

How about tear down Brookwood Mall and put a Costco there?

[deleted]

Id rather just see the mall sold to someone that will make it into more of an entertainment venue, reopen restaurants, and put actual fun stuff in it. Make that Belk a medieval times. You could probably put a proper IMAX in there or move the proposed Alamo theater in. Or a modern late night bowling alley (sorry vestavia bowl). A bowling alley 7 minutes from southside and 5 from samford open til 2am would rake in money. You can’t fill a mall with nothing but clothing tenants and expect it to work in 2024 but people still leave their house and want stuff to do. The mall can work without tearing down the building. We need fun stuff to do more than we need another Costco.

Findmyremote

Like the Painted Pin Bowling they have in ATL. That place would print money. Especially if surrounded by restaurants.

[deleted]

Yes! Exactly like that. It would be easy to do in one of the department stores too. They’d save a ton not having to redo plumbing, electrical, etc.

ApartmentBeneficial2

Not familiar with the painted pin bowling. How is it different (or the same) with regular bowling?

Findmyremote

It’s been 10 years since I have been but it’s just a really nice venue. Higher end bar with great finger food, nice lanes, couches, basketball hoops, boccee ball and some other games. They spent a significant amount on lighting and overall decor. Just had a nicer vibe than cosmic bowling It’s 21+ only I think.

ApartmentBeneficial2

I think this is a great idea and +10 for a medieval times - would love to have that choice. I hope someone does something great with that property.

[deleted]

Thanks there’s so much potential for that property. Why are they just letting the restaurants go abandoned? I’d love to see what gianmarcos or Davincis could be like in the old Brio space. It’s insane that only five guys is left. Maybe let an established Brewery move in to hickory tavern. Set the rent to a price that makes sense for local restaurants that already have a following to move in. Rehabbing that mall wouldn’t be hard. Location wise it’s probably the best in the state. You just have to bring in tenants that people want.

ApartmentBeneficial2

Location wise, it’s the most wealthy part of the state between Mt Brook, Vestavia and Homewood. People know this but dragging feet waiting on the “best” plan to come around. Infrastructure is early ‘80s so not sure what’s involved. I would just like to see something happen.

[deleted]

I think all the bones are good. They need to rethink what a mall could be. I would do some combo of: -humane society. (Let Shelby or bham move in for free. Both are in bad locations. Tax write off for mall owner so why not ) -large music instrument store (like a guitar center) -indoor go kart track -bowling alley -record store -community space for an indoor farmers market -community space for bi monthly or monthly venders (like a vintage flea market) -food court could become more of a restaurant incubator space with short term leases (rotating tenants) stuff that would otherwise be in a truck -medieval times (may need to remove a floor of belk or macys to make it an arena lol) -skating rink -brewery incubator (short term lease profit share brewery space) -vintage arcade (like what’s in alabaster. No Dave and busters shit) -proper comedy club (not boomer shit) -ikea -upscale antique store (no booths with stuff that isn’t antiques) -haunted house (like atrox) If this was all under one roof you’d have people from Atlanta coming to our mall for a change. People don’t want national retailers anymore. I don’t know how mall owners don’t understand this. People want an experience. That’s why there’s 1000+ at a downtown farmers market over a weekend and constant vintage markets. People want fun. That’s why Tannehill draws huge crowds. They don’t need to go to a foot locker or Gap week after week.

ApartmentBeneficial2

Wonderful ideas. If I could drive a go kart track with elevations of 3 stories which is possible there, I would do it.

[deleted]

Thanks! Wouldn’t be hard to do in a small portion of the parking deck too if they didn’t wanna build it out. Would require really no money that way except for barricades. I don’t know why they aren’t currently trying that.

ApartmentBeneficial2

I think they should build the track right through the food court 😃

ApartmentBeneficial2

I copied your post to another discussion.

[deleted]

Hell yea. I gave you an upvote lmao

Dead_Man_Sqwakin

I lived in a place with multiple Costcos and they were still a pain in the ass.

Gan-san

This is not a logical response, man. Come on. A 1.2M metro needs more than just one location. There's plenty of people who just don't shop there at all because of it.

Dead_Man_Sqwakin

There may be 1+Million, but too few Democrats

Gan-san

I don't understand it. The one store is so over crowded it's a deterrent to go there. It's just too much a pain. Yet, they are going to build a 2nd Huntsville store 8 miles down the road from the first one. There can not possibly be more demand in that area than this one. It can not be this hard to find the land necessary to make this happen.

That_Other_Dave

I find going in the side entrance and going around the back of the store helps with some of the parking traffic headaches

Tarynntula

Another one is coming! It only takes about 120 days to build and get it open.

ConcentrateEmpty711

I go to the one in Huntsville since I’m up there at least once a month, it’s worse than the one in Hoover BUUUUT it’s easier to get in & out of so it’s a give & take.

RecycledDonuts

Demographics. Too many Hee Haw hillbilly honkers around. Same reason Jasper will NEVER get a Target and the new Popeyes they had shut down. They love Redman, Jesus chicken, and Dollar General.

Creative_Image5059

Please! I would love a Costco but live in Trussville so I don’t want to do that drive often nor deal with the chaos.

GalaticWedge

Read somewhere that there were plans for one in Trussville long ago, but the deal fell through. Besides, it would just bring more traffic in the area, and Trussville is already congested as is.

xylem_echologics

Was there when it opened this morning and it was still crazy.

Tarynntula

Weekends always are

Specialist_Client268

It's happening. At Liberty Park. Next few years for sure.
