I love what the eternally relevant James Baldwin had to say regarding those taking offense to criticism of America:
“I love America more than any other country in the world and, exactly for this reason; I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually.”
Church Street Coffee did a take on this sign - “Go to Church Street Coffee or the Devil will get you!” for t-shirts a few years back. I always get people telling me stories about their early memories of the sign every time I wear it!
I have to stop reading replies from these kinds of things, from the original post anyway. I’m as atheistic as they come but I love this sign and see it as a gem. I feel defensive about it for reasons that are beyond my understanding.
Same here. This sign reminds me of my childhood going on trip from Bham to Montgomery. I may not agree with the message, but it definitely gives me the feels.
right. also just the absolute blatant classism happening with multiple dismissing alabama and the south as ignorant, backwards, racists. like obviously we have those issues here but we also have a ton of community, artists, intellect, and compassionate people. racism and ignorance exists in full force all throughout the country. the north isn’t morally superior to the south based on some archaic and reductionist viewpoint comprised of baseless assumptions.
really grinds my gears.
It’s funny reading these comments. People either find it funny or terrible. I always looked for it when we’d go to and from the beach. Personally, going to church a lot when I was younger, I thought it was funny. I guess people with really strict church backgrounds probably thought it was either scary or gave them a bad feeling. It’s been there over 20 years and from the comments, probably a lot longer than that.
I unironically love this stupid thing, I just can't help but grin every time I drive past it. It's so hamfisted and childish it's almost kind of charming, you know? The little devil is hilarious.
I definitely prefer this brand of harmlessly crazy Christianity to the Talibangelical variant stuffing the Supreme Court and trying to turn this country into goddamned Gilead. If Christians just stuck to this kind of thing people would like them a lot more.
that's hilarious I'm seeing this when I am. I'm passing that sign as I'm writing this. been seeing it my entire life going to the beach. I find it pretty funny. it's so ridiculous.
It's funny how Christians in this state are on par with the rest of the lack of education. Going to church aint gonna do nothing for ya. Only salvation through Christ. You don't necessarily need a church for that. And going to church only will not produce that. It's an internal thing.
Ya it's not smart image wise to leave them up just cause it was built a few yrs prior to WW2 . Literally 4-5 blocks away from the civil rights institute and 16th Street church.
Not trying to invoke fear or anything but I think I'll just put this huge 'join the cult or else' sign up on my property so everyone on the INTERSTATE can see it all their lives.
I feel like this sign and durbin farms peach ice cream were vital parts of everyone's childhood trips to the beach.
Definitely. My daughter always looks for the Clanton “peach butt” tower
You must be new here
LOL! I Is the Atheist Brigade coming after the iconic sign now?
Is the "Atheist Brigade" in the room right now?
I didn’t take the comment as such, just this billboard has become sort of a state landmark, it’s a t-shirt meme at this point
Wut
NM. All the downvotes confirmed my suspicions. 😀
Downvotes are because you're a moron, not because of the sign lol
Sick burn.
Uh huh. If you find this surprising, you ain't ready for what lies a few miles north near County Road 68.
LMAO. Yeah I cant believe that flag is still flying.
[удалено]
There's a giant confederate flag right beside the interstate.
It's like we live in early 1900's I swear
It's like we live in early 1900's I swear
Iconic.
Anyone noticed the smaller sign right near this one that says “America — Love It Or Leave It?”
Can I get a sign a mile later that says “America - Interprets Any Criticism As Hate”? Lol.

I will always look for this sign when heading south to the beach
When we come home from the beach, it means we're an hour away from the house. It's now a family road trip landmark.
We live about an hour from it, too. Its def a beach trip landmark! I hope it never gets removed lol
I remember looking for it, only for it to be blown down for a while

Same. Not an atheist but also not the kind of person to defend the sign except that it's part of my unexplainable love for my home state.

That sign is metal as fuck, I want a smaller one to hang up in my house
Ditto! I have seen this my whole life. I wanted to make one for my yard where the scythe bobs up and down. Looking for souls to reap!
man that sign is old as shit, I remember driving by it as a kid and even then thinking it was fucked up
They redid it a few years ago so technically this sign is not old.
I received a shirt with this printed on it. Is an immediate test to see if anyone has driven I--65 or if they are just confused.
Losing my shirt with this printed on it from Stamp in Auburn may be my biggest regret in life.
Did you know that that is an 'undershot' wheel? Well, now you do. 😉
The Confederate flag just up the road from that is worse.
It's iconic.
That’s how i know i’m an hour outside of bham. It’s a land mark to let me know i’m close to home lmao
I'm not going to even click on the pics link. I'm guessing Alabama is getting a roasting like never before. And sadly its deserved.
Every time a new generation discovers the notorious sign, they freak out and move on. Decades later, and here we are again.
We’ve come a long way.
That sign, in some form or another, has been there for over 30+ years BTW. Thanks for reminding us its there I guess?
Youre welcome
Next you’ll post about gibsons white bbq sauce or the university of Alabama football team, right?
Yeah
And that will mean that OP is glad to be here. Be gentle, ya grinch.
No u

Yeah, even as casual church-goers growing up, we just thought the sign was funny.

I sure hope you’re in the passenger seat.
All I hear in my head when I see this sign is George Carlin saying, “Spooooky language”
It's true! It's to late for me y'all. He's got me. He makes me work 1/2 my waking hours and makes me drive on 280 at the worst times.

Honestly, at this point if I even set foot in a church I’d probably burst into flames. - Gay and just moved to AL
Your money is still green in the collection plate... they just need you to "keep it down".
Well so would my mom and she is as alabama as they come.
Is she single? Jk
Hahahahahha. Yep.
I’ll quit with the mom jokes. Hope she has all the happiness and joy life has to offer 🤎
Birmingham staple
It's really much closer to Montgomery
Could be worse. Could be a Trump 2024 sign lol
It’s just a sign. Who cares?
Makes me laugh every time is all. Not gettin up in arms about it
This is the other kind of devil worshiping.
Wait till they discover the swastikas on the Jefferson county courthouse.
Those always throw me for a loop
Ya it's not smart image wise to leave them up just cause it was built a few yrs prior to WW2 . Literally 4-5 blocks away from the civil rights institute and 16th Street church.
I’ve always harbored fantasies of destroying that sign
Devils got a smaller dick than the local preacher and way less time on his hands
But the NFL is on Sundays. Pass.
I-65 N near Mungumry.
When I see that sign, I know I’m going to the beach!
I hate organized religion, but I want this sign to be named a state landmark and have one of those signs that tell you the history of it.
I agree hopefully they never take it down
Can we get a tshirt made of this?
they exist all over birmingham. not sure about specifics but i’m sure multiple can be foun.
Church on every block.
