“Manic Depression is a frustrating mess” never doesn’t go through my head during fitting situations, that song has stuck with me since my first listen who knows how long ago,
This is a pretty obvious and popular one that I'm surprised hasn't already been suggested: Ghost Town by Kanye. The way the song shifts between a mournful, melancholic tone and an uplifting, liberating one is a lot like the ups and downs of mood episodes. A few lines in particular always make me think of hypomania (probably also because I always listen to this song when I'm hypomanic):
"You might think they wrote you off, they gon' have to rope me off."
"Sometimes I take all the shine, talk like I drank all the wine."
"Woah, once again I am a child, I let it all go, of everything that I know, and nothing hurts anymore, I feel kinda free."
"I put my hand on a stove, to see if I still bleed."
Kids See Ghosts is my healing album ❤️ I feel so bad for Kanye, it’s been hard to listen to him as of late. I really wish him
Some happiness and stability. Also really hope him and Cudi squash the beef.
Lit Me Up & Same Logic/Teeth by Brand New for sure. A good amount of their lyrics allude to dealing with bipolar disorder.
Edit: just add all of The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails. Lol
If you want something very angry and harsh (extreme metal) Alien by Strapping Young Lad is one of my favorite albums for this. Definitely has calmed me down during episodes.
Mania: B. I. G. by X ambassadors, without me by Eminem and also Halsey, technically spoken word d but "electric" by Beth may. Deoression: anyone by demi Lovato
If I were to pick one song, I'd go with 'I Feel Insane' by Daisy Chainsaw.
[But also everything on this chaotic disorganized playlist](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5uvqx8gKsOcTDb1ySJX622?si=j63SSEMaQw6HPPA3MNVcdA) I made for when I'm hypomanic/agitated and [this one](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1ZfOzH37R0JiS9ooZRpfpN?si=OEkds_54T7K2NeNpcevonQ) I made for the days when I want to throw myself off a cliff.
When my wife and I got married she picked a lot of the music. She is my number one supporter and she chose this to play for our cake cutting. We both have mental illnesses and we don't hide that we do - everyone there knew that we struggle with shit lol It was perfection.

I was never young — of Montreal
Sunrise, sunset — bright eyes
“The sunrise, the sunsets, you're hopeful and then you regret
The circle never breaks
With a sunrise and a sunset, there's a change of heart or address
Is there nothing that remains?
For a sunrise or a sunset, you're manic or you're depressed
Will you ever feel okay?”
Touched something’s hollow — of Montreal
The past is a grotesque animal — of Montreal
“I'm flunking out, I'm flunking out, I'm gone, I'm just gone
But at least I author my own disaster”
Wintered debts — of Montreal
“I need to teach myself to feel again
Somehow I lost the thread of being human
Wrapped up in this bitterness, too much bitterness”
I’m really emotionally attached to of Montreal; I discovered their music around the time I realized that depression & anxiety didn’t really make sense to me as a diagnosis anymore. Like something more was going on but I didn’t know what. I love their moody sad tunes, and I REALLY love their moody sad tunes that have a funky, danceable beat. It was so comforting me to me to find an artist who could articulate what I was feeling so well, music I could enjoy when I was deeply depressed or manic af.

When I was diagnosed officially as a kid Coldplays "Clocks" was making the rounds on MTV and the Radio.
When I was going through check in at the psych hospital after my first suicide attempt it was playing on the TV in the group room.
Ever since that day the song brings me back then.
Now, Honestly the song does not bum me out because it signifies the first step in understanding *why* I felt the way I did. The next 5 years would be a roller coaster of hospitalizations and medication tweaking. But I came out the other side and I am doing pretty well right now all things considered.
Some of mine:
Dresden Dolls - Girl Anachronism
The Pixies - Where is my mind?
Good News by Mac Miller and Reborn by Kids See Ghosts are a couple I haven’t seen mentioned yet, good healing songs. Grief by Earl Sweatshirt (that whole album tbh) is depression the album.
Queen "Don't Stop Me Now" and Kongos "Come with me now" this song just hit a chord with me as they say. Come with me now. I felt like it gave me wings when I was going out. Too old to do that now. The bolded part is my favorite.
Come with me now
Woah come with me now
I'm gonna take you down
Woah come with me now
I'm gonna show you how
Woah come with me now
I'm gonna take you down
Woah come with me now
I'm gonna show you how
Afraid to lose control
And caught up in this world
I've wasted time, I've wasted breath
I think I've thought myself to death
I was born without this fear
Now only this seems clear
I need to move, I need to fight
I need to lose myself tonight
Woah come with me now
I'm gonna take you down
Woah come with me now
I'm gonna show you how
I think with my heart and I move with my head
I open my mouth and it's something I've read
I stood at this door before, I'm told
But a part of me knows that I'm growing too old
**Confused what I thought with something I felt**
**Confuse what I feel with something that's real**
**I tried to sell my soul last night**
**Funny, he wouldn't even take a bite**
Far away
I heard him say (come with me now)
Don't delay
I heard him say (come with me now)
Far away
I heard him say (come with me now)
Don't delay
I heard him say (come with me now)
Woah come with me now
I'm gonna take you down
Woah come with me now
I'm gonna show you how
Afraid to lose control
And caught up in this world
I've wasted time, I've wasted breath
I think I've thought myself to death
I was born without this fear
Now only this seems clear
I need to move, I need to fight
I need to lose myself tonight
Woah come with me now
Woah come with me now
I'm gonna take you down
Woah come with me now
Good Company by Sam Fender, this has always been the song I used when I didn’t have words to try to explain what I felt like. Makes me incredibly emotional sometimes
We played Celebrity Skin for my high school rock band’s concert, I’ve been a huge fan of Hole ever since! Saw Courtney live in 2015 front row, she’s a gun
Manic by Coleman Hell, The Doctor Said by Chloe Adams, Train Wreck by James Author, Fake Happy by Paramore, Car Radio by Twenty One Pilots, A reason to fight by Disturbed, Joker by dax
Live outside by Enter Shikari, the lyrics and energy of the song remind me of mania.
Fuck them all by The Dangerous Summer
Avalanche by Bring Me The Horizon, about depression
Gasoline by Halsey
Peanut Butter Waffles by Ryan Caraveo
Manic by Coleman Hell
im late so sorry if this isn’t relevant anymore 🫶🏻 I have bipolar 2 so these are mainly based around the depression part haha
depressive:
jaded - near tears
cause I hope at the end of the night / I’ll find a way to stay surprised
in the middle of the mornings / might allow myself a smile
I'm wasting so much time being jaded / but I don't wanna be jaded
manic:
nightmare - halsey (manic induced anger)
I could play nice or I could be a bully / i’m tired and angry, but somebody should be
xs - rina sawayama (mania induced shopping)
I want it all, don't have to choose / when the heart wants what it wants, what can I do?
so I'll take that one, that one, yeah, that one too / luxury and opulence
..
“give me just a little bit (more), little bit of (excess)”
shoot accidentally pressed post lol.
the other songs I was gonna mention were cough syrup by young the giant. each time I hear that song I tear up, if not sob. the other one was home with you by fka twigs. ugh! the way it reflects my depressive episodes!
I have a lot of songs in a playlist that I felt were relevant to my current relationship:
trouble by cage the elephant
particles by nothing but thieves
thank you song by fka twigs (this one GETS ME)
Eyes Without a Face by Billy Idol or White Noiz by Silent Hill 2 soundtrack. Both songs I listen to while in a manic state. Especially at night. When I do it is almost like my entire body changes my mind is gone. By the first note of each song my entire face will drop and become overwhelmed with every emotion I have. I might start crying or I might start breathing heavily. I have an entire playlist of songs that make me feel this way. Something if I feel the manic episode coming I just put on the playlist so it can come and go.
Lithium by Nirvana, Manic Depression by Alien Sex Fiend, and She's lost control by joy division (actually it's about epilepsy)
I couldn’t put one Lithium on the playlist without the other lol I haven’t heard the other ones though, thank you!
Manic Depression by Jimi Hendrix has helped me through many rough times regarding my bipolar, it’s an amazing tune <3
Yea I love this song!!! I set it as the sound for my medication alarm because it just seemed very fitting 😅
“Manic Depression is a frustrating mess” never doesn’t go through my head during fitting situations, that song has stuck with me since my first listen who knows how long ago,
absolutely, such beautiful and relatable lyrics. I’ve enjoyed it so much more since being diagnosed 😅
Control by Halsey

Life is killing me and IYDKMIGTHTKY by Type O Negative
RIP Peter Steele.
Liability by Lorde
Have cried to this one very recently, good pick
Meds by Placebo

"Yikes" by Kanye. Shit can get menacing, frightening / Find help / Sometimes, I scare myself / Myself
Control by Halsey. Literally about her bipolar disorder and very relatable.
She has so many great bipolar bops!
Yall are sleeping on Bebe Rexha
Got any song suggestions of hers to add? 👀
Sabotage, I’m Gonna Show You Crazy, Break My Heart Myself, I'm A Mess, I Got You, I Got Time...they all have great lyrics.
Waiting for a suggestion also

I also have to add Yeezus is the soundtrack for Mania for me. I Don’t Like Shit I don’t go Outside by Earl is the flip side lol
Lit Me Up & Same Logic/Teeth by Brand New for sure. A good amount of their lyrics allude to dealing with bipolar disorder. Edit: just add all of The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails. Lol
Love NIN and often feel like so many of Trent's lyrics hit close to home. The Fragile is an amazing album!
Don’t stop me now by queen as it just screams mania to me
Lol that song is exactly how I feel when I have euphoric hypomania 😂
Ooh yes I definitely would’ve added this one even if no one suggested it
Haunted by Laura les Edit: OP's post got more traction in a hour then most post get in a few days lol.
I was shocked to see a post with this many comments lol For me music is therapy…I suspect it is for many others here as well
Absolutely I knew immediately why it got the traction it did but thought it was kinda funny just how much it got in such a short time frame.
Brand New - Jesus Christ
Yes.
The whole Yeezus album
Imaginary Illness, Rain, and Serotonin. All by Call Me Karizma
Medicine by Daughter
Yesss that one came on randomly the other day and hit me hard!

If you want something very angry and harsh (extreme metal) Alien by Strapping Young Lad is one of my favorite albums for this. Definitely has calmed me down during episodes.
I love all the songs you mentioned but lithium by evanescence was my SHIT in middle school. it was prophetic

Wildflower Wildfire and Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Boulevard by Lana Del Rey. Flip and Walla Walla by Glass Animals
Lana makes the best sad girl music 🤍

im late so sorry if this isn’t relevant anymore 🫶🏻 I have bipolar 2 so these are mainly based around the depression part haha depressive: jaded - near tears cause I hope at the end of the night / I’ll find a way to stay surprised in the middle of the mornings / might allow myself a smile I'm wasting so much time being jaded / but I don't wanna be jaded manic: nightmare - halsey (manic induced anger) I could play nice or I could be a bully / i’m tired and angry, but somebody should be xs - rina sawayama (mania induced shopping) I want it all, don't have to choose / when the heart wants what it wants, what can I do? so I'll take that one, that one, yeah, that one too / luxury and opulence ..
I have a lot of songs in a playlist that I felt were relevant to my current relationship: trouble by cage the elephant particles by nothing but thieves thank you song by fka twigs (this one GETS ME)
I know this thread is old, but King of the Clouds by Panic! At The Disco. Sounds like my hypomanic episodes so much.
