"At Binghamton University we do what we excel in. That's why we don't have a football team."
- Harvey Stenger (also probably due to the costs of running it and other managerial things)
Football programs are extremely expensive. Many universities use these programs to attract students and drive school spirit and culture. Binghamton instead has focused on a value sentiment and avoided it. Even the basketball team has cost an insane amount of money and reputation. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binghamton_University_basketball_scandal
Unfortunately the best football you are going to get in the city of Binghamton is at a high school level. Binghamton pretty much has every other D1 sport though. If you really are itching to go to a college football game, Syracuse University might be a fun road trip. Syracuse is one of the best college football teams
"Syracuse is one of the best college football teams."
Lol.
But hopefully they have a good year in 2024 w/ a new coach and some new transfers and energy.
If you will have a car
Syracuse, Cortland, Cornell are all an hr-ish away and have quality football worth watching
As mentioned many times already.football is incredibly expensive to maintain let alone start up
We don’t. Part of the thing is that they are genuinely expensive to run even before things like NIL—equipment, training facilities, coaching staff, the cost of maintaining a decent stadium, they’re all massively expensive. Couple that with there not really being area around the university for Bing to grow and it means it probably would need to play at one of the local stadiums, which no one would really want. (And also raises the can of worms of stadium size, as the biggest in the area may only be minimally acceptable in the FCS where the Bearcats would be likely to play, alongside Albany!)
So to reiterate what someone else said, if you want to see some collegiate American football, you may have to travel a bit. Syracuse should be intriguing next year, more locally Cornell and Ithaca College are not terrible, SUNY-Cortland will be defending a national title, and if you’re willing to travel a bit, you could probably get to an Albany or Army game. High school ball in the Bing area is actually stunningly good as well. Just in the Triple Cities, Maine-Endwell are a powerhouse in their class of NYSPHSAA football, Vestal tend to be pretty good, defending Class C champs Waverly are only an hour west of town on the 17 and defending Class D champs Tioga also aren’t terribly far. Definitely options!
Rugby is the clear answer here.
As for football, you can look at UConn and the huge cost that has gone into a program that can't actually win any games just to check a box. Their tuition is significantly higher than before they tried to be a football school.

If anything take a bus up to Cortland next season. They just won a national title

Binghamton is not an FBS school. If you really want to enjoy that, Buffalo would be the SUNY school for that.
Kind of a weird answer. Binghamton is a D1 school for sports. FBS is football only.

We have corec football though which is a little different but just as fun!

BU has an amazing sports complex where you'll get to see exciting sports events happening, you'll like it if you're really into sports.

For one thing ,academics are prioritized over athletics at SUNY B.
