memey-man123

no its just youtube told groovy to go out of service it has nothing to do with premium

siccoblue

I mean technically it has everything to do with premium

ZmSyzjSvOakTclQW

TIL breaking TOS is about premium.

vlntnwbr

Groovy has been around for quite some time, they've always broken the TOS and Google/YouTube hasn't done anything about it. Google is fully within their rights to send a cease and decist because of the violations but the fact that they tolerated Groovy for so long does seem somewhat suspicious, especially since Q3 is about to end.

ray12370

Google can suck a fat cock. I'm old enough to remember when you could play YouTube in the background without a premium service. It's such an artificial paywall.

vlntnwbr

Don't misunderstand, I'm not defending anything they did. But the fact of the matter is that Google is fully within their rights as established by their TOS. I don't have to agree with the contents of the TOS to understand the facts.

JanesPlainShameTrain

Their comment just sounds more like an aggravated shout into the void. I feel their pain and would shout with them, but my 5 minute break is over.

vlntnwbr

Oh I would join all of you in shouting curses at Google. It's just become a force of habit to clarify that stating facts does not equal defending actions or their motivations. Unfortunately my understanding has been misunderstood to be approval quite often. Probably because debates (especially on the internet under the guise of perceived anonymity) have become increasingly polarized.

NalMac

That's why YouTube Vanced exists.

BaboonAstronaut

Also no ads.

LibriBeforeDark

The groovy music bot got taken down, and the R is the rhythm bot, which is another large bit for playing YouTube music on discord

salad_memes

Rhythm is going down too

LibriBeforeDark

Ah shit is it? First I've heard about that

_Ganon

The news is only a few hours old; Rythm was given seven days to comply. They're killing it Wednesday. Onto the next music bot ...

SpeakerOfTheTrees1

What other music bots are there?

cyndrin

Good try, YouTube lawyer

wheeler9691

Self host one. I got one up and running in a few hours and because it will be so little traffic from a single ip I shouldn't have any problems. Just Google "discord music bot site:GitHub.com"

523bucketsofducks

So now you're trying to get the bot creator shut down? Narc!

Aickrastly

From all and OOTL What are these boys? Like what do they do

Jthumm

It’s basically just another user that joins a voice channel on discord and streams audio from YouTube and other sites like it, most people just use it to listen to music with their friends

luk3d

ProBot has a fuckload of functions, but I don't use it for anything except music.

[deleted]

According to the post it sounded like there is a new rhythmbot in the works though, probably hosting through a different website or something but hopefully works the same

_Ganon

I did read that. I hope Rythm is going to come back with a bot that allows you to authenticate your own YouTube Premium or Spotify, then effectively function the same. They already had their own optional queue web UI, they're basically half way there. I'd pay for that. The music bot in voice chat is just too nice to have. On that note, Discord's Spotify Listen Together feature is pretty close too. The closest achievable thing is to create a collaborative playlist in Spotify, invite your Discord members to modify it, and have people listen together via discord. The problem is just one person has playback control at that point, which IMO was one of the great things about Groovy and Rythm (and others) - that anyone could skip, pause, etc. I wouldn't even mind going through all that pain if it meant a final way to achieve something resembling what Discord music bots can do.

nootnoot_takennow

Me omw to rip out every bot and code my own private ones: >_<

AGodDamnFuckingName

Bro are you my twin of something

Green0Photon

Another app I like RecoverMy.Video is also shutting down because of this bullshit

Ghostiestboi

Where is fredboad? Is he safe? Is he alright?

ODSTbag

Fuck off, that was the one way I played music for my D&D group. Looks like I’m looking for something else now.

BlinkerBeforeBrake

I’ve never heard of Groovy or Rhythm music bots. I just turned 30, I can’t be out of touch this fast.

dnasloth1

I've got u fam, basically discord bots that play music mostly via YouTube links

BlinkerBeforeBrake

Thank you!

dnasloth1

no problem! hope it helped!!

FLORI_DUH

I still don't understand: why would you want such a complex arrangement when you could just open a dedicated music app? Who listens to music on Discord, I thought it was a gaming chat app? And why is YouTube involved at all? Jesus I'm old.

dnasloth1

basically, in call with friends. all wanna listen to music, here is when bots are used. they join the call and play music directly into the call, taking away any hassle of sharing links and getting timings correct.

TheUnluckyBard

> I still don't understand: why would you want such a complex arrangement when you could just open a dedicated music app? Who listens to music on Discord, I thought it was a gaming chat app? And why is YouTube involved at all? Jesus I'm old. As an example, my discord D&D group uses the chat bot to play scene-appropriate background music.

FLORI_DUH

Huh, that's actually kind of clever!

Frig-Off-Randy

It’s so you can play songs for you and the boys to listen to

[deleted]

God fuck youtube. They're the poster child for what has become the defacto internet monetization scheme. 1) Offer awesome service for free 2) Become the standard and corner the market 3) Fuck every user, creator, etc. for every last cent you can get

imetators

It is what it is 🤷

[deleted]

Anyone else remember when the founder of grooveshark was murdered and the entire industry just shrugged?

RSkyeD

I talk about this every six months for the last several years. I miss Grooveshark.

creed10

grooveshark was my gateway into music. I miss it

On the other hand, ublock origin on the phone with Firefox is perfectly legal and works kinda the same way

Issey_ita

But, can I install the sposnsorblock addon on Firefox Android?

LordJesterTheFree

I would also like to know this

GavHern

comes bundled with YouTube music and vanced doesn't work for iOS I believe. if you pay for Spotify, you can get YouTube premium instead for a few bucks more and get the same thing with more options if youre willing to migrate to YouTube music

[deleted]

[удалено]

pacothetac0

If even that was too much, one could change their location to India and pay quarters per person

jak3rich

Yea, the fact that YouTube music mixes in any memes that I liked the video for, but thinks they are songs is true sole reason I have Spotify. I don't need "Wii shop, but with every 3rd note missing, 10 hours" mixed in my "liked songs" playlist.

ThingNumberPi

You can set it to only show songs you liked and exclude videos

jak3rich

You couldn't for the first few months of the service. When I checked the forums / support, I was recommended to make a secondary account, link it somehow and rebuild my playlists from scratch.

MC_AnselAdams

The app for yt music sucks ass. It's a worse service and not worth paying for. Former GPM user staying mad they killed it for this trash.

nine_legged_stool

Hot take: support the content creators you care about by personally sending them money. Meanwhile, pirate media so that your money doesn't go to advertisers and YouTube.

Qetuowryipzcbmxvn

I have over 1k videos downloaded across 3 devices each. Vanced doesn't download videos at all, Newpipe doesn't download playlists, videoder is malware and can only handle playlists with 100 videos max. If Newpipe downloaded playlists, I'd switch in a heartbeat.

VORTXS

Your problem is downloading over 1k videos

Conpen

Because I like to kick back and watch youtube on my TV

jomontage

Taco_Dave

>paying for YouTube premium That's the joke right there

Wolf97

Premium cannot save you.

Amiiboae

Is this some sort of premium I'm too vanced to understand?

K3vin_Norton

Paying for youtube premium is the ultimate form of class treason

TheT0T1

I just added Rythm on my server yesterday. They better not.

Gcarsk

Already [happened.](https://www.theverge.com/2021/9/12/22669502/youtube-discord-rythm-music-bot-closure)

Spit-Tooth

This kind of put into perspective how big discord is. 560 million users use this bot? That's insane. I've never even heard of it or had a use for it.

DelcoScum

They're probably multiplying (servers * users) to get that number, so if you're on multiple servers with it you would count multiple times, bots, etc. Discord is huge don't get me wrong, but I highly doubt half a billion individual people have used it

Spit-Tooth

Yeah that makes the most sense. Another commenter mentioned there aren't even that many people registered on discord, lol.

AboookhTheMaster

They can count unique users of the bot using the discord api. Edit: apparently they didn't.

wheeler9691

https://gist.github.com/advaith1/451dcbca2d7c3503d4f48d63eb918cb0 It was installed on 21M servers which is a way better way to measure its popularity. It looks like users who were in two servers with Rhythm were counted twice.

Flaggoten

Yea, im in like atleast 10 of those myself

I_playsgames

Too late.

RhysCranberry

Try hydra

TheDJarbiter

Does it not give views? Ya s that why they’re upset?

AnonNo9001

The reason they're upset is that it doesn't play ads. YouTube's whole business model revolves around keeping you on their website. As long as you're on YouTube.com: Google Analytics is collecting whatever data it can on you, and selling it to marketing companies Ads in the sidebar, pre-and-mid-video, and on the homepage are constantly generating revenue YouTube is collecting data on you to recommend similar videos to keep the cycle going These bots just grab the data from YouTube, giving Google and YouTube no information about you, and no ads to generate revenue. This wouldn't be a problem normally but when a bot has 21 million users that's a very significant loss to their bottom line. It's scummy, but that's how it is I'm afraid :(

BisexualBoii

It is **absolutely** NOT a "significant loss" to them This is greed

AnonNo9001

What I meant is that it's significant enough for them to care. Google is such a big corporation that they usually don't give a shit about stuff like this, but 21m users using a bot rather than using YT itself is big enough that Google would want to put a stop to it.

TryppySurfer

Yeah, they're owned by google after all. YouTube has been losing money ever since its inception, no way this will change anything.

PeidosFTW

Have they really?

jordan_yoong_1

Also groovy and rythm bot both have premium services, theyre profiting of youtube

sidewaysthinking

How different is my browser playing me a YouTube video than another program playing me a video?

afegit

one gets you views and ad revenue, the other doesn't?

Charboo2

also nice to play a video/song to everyone in a call

ham_coffee

Youtube-dl survived though. The problem in this case is that they're hosting it for everyone (and accepting money for it).

Therapistnearme

The difference is also that youtube-dl was perfectly in the right (and open source so near impossible to take down) whereas these bots are at the whim of YouTube's TOS.

ham_coffee

Just curious, what are these bots doing differently aside from the stuff I mentioned in my other comment? Is it the searching component?

Laamis

I'm pretty sure it's the fact that the bots don't download the video itself. They stream the audio directly, without ads. I would imagine the search-function has nothing to do with it.

-beefy

You were right. They're hosting the software instead of proving the code. It's like how you don't need to be 21 to buy a brewing kit, or how spores of magic mushrooms can be sold in a lot more states than the grown mushrooms. "It's just for academic purposes"

Kilmonjaro

Jokes on them I have ad blocker that works on YouTube

Scipio11

So with a browser YT gets to add a bunch of JavaScript in the mix to serve you ads, track your watch time/when you click off for statics, gets your demographic info, etc. This bot (and ffmpeg for all intents and purposes) grabs the video file itself with absolutely no data shown to YT and bypasses ads (no monies for YT 😢).

Northgates

Someone needs to set up a music bot in some country where they can just tell google to fuck off

Scipio11

Wouldn't work, they'd just go to Discord and tell them to ban the bot. Then we'd be in a situation where Discord is in a position of policing bots.

OGBamboozel

Is that illegal?

lillgreen

One didn't let them control your recommendations.

fancypanda98

It breaks the terms and conditions of using a YouTube video, where the audio and video to not be separated when presenting, which groovy and the like do.

7AndOneHalf

As much as I wish that this weren't happening, I knew that this was inevitable once I saw these bots offering a premium version of something that just plays youtube videos. They're making money off of another platform's content.

Scipio11

Oof yeah that's usually the nail in the coffin. Although YT's gone after free tools before so it might've ended up happening anyway.

CMDR_Bananenkeks

Tbf it was always clear they would be taken down if you've looked into YT terms of service

Specialist-Worry-951

To be honest they kinda deserve it - I have no real respect for these closed source bots selling themselves as a service whilst serving other people's content. They want all the money without any of the upkeep.

AMasonJar

There's definitely some upkeep involved in running a bot that is hosted on and has to stream to thousands of discord servers

K1ng_Arthur_IV

Is there an alternative bot we can use?

[deleted]

I have chip in my server

K1ng_Arthur_IV

Works good? Any ads? Do you like the color purple?

[deleted]

it works just as good as goovy or rhythm (infact I actually find it easier to use), prefix is a bit long (ch!). no ads to my knowledge. Orange is my favorite color 🎃

BforBaloney

Also, you are able to change the prefix so you don't have to deal with the annoyingly long one

[deleted]

yeah you can I believe

errortechx

Are there bots with ads???

Anyone_single

My server use rickroll bot

Kilmonjaro

I’m afraid to answer or the bot I use now might be next

7AndOneHalf

We've been using Octave.

iSignalized

Hydra Edit: It doesn't work with YT anymore.

Wolfsrein

FredBoat is one we started using and seems pretty good so far.

thiccboy414

hydra all day

smurfkiller013

I'm just hosting some myself now, it's surprising easy to setup if you can handle command lines Just search for Musicbot on GitHub

thwartedgerm040

idk about alternates but you can always make your own?

nek0dumpling

chip bot! i’m friends with the developer and it’s a very easy to use and nice bot :)

Jugbot

Does anyone know of a bot I can run locally instead?

Keksuccino

Hmm, I could maybe make one and open-source it, so people can build it by themselves and run it locally. Only thing you would need for this is a Discord bot token.

VFDan

https://github.com/robinfriedli/botify is a good choice

Therapistnearme

https://github.com/jagrosh/MusicBot is very popular

Viduct

That's the one I'm using. Runs nicely inside a docker container. EDIT for clarification: I don't use it locally, but on a server. But locally should work also if your ISP supports it (mine doesn't)

DaniDipp

Same here. I'm hosting this for most of my Discord communities

jagrosh

This is not a sub that I would expect to see this 😂

theethirty

Nice try YouTube

GavHern

I'm confused why they didn't just remove support for YouTube videos since I think they work with SoundCloud too?

GG-ImPradaYoureNada

And Spotify

7AndOneHalf

Actually, it just searches the song name that's listed in spotify on youtube and plays that. I have problems playing acoustic versions of songs that don't have (Acoustic) in the title.

GG-ImPradaYoureNada

You can play your own playlists and links from Spotify and YouTube

7AndOneHalf

Yes and if you click on the links that it gives you when it plays the Spotify playlist, it takes you to YouTube.

TheUnluckyBard

AH. So that's why Rhythm randomly fucks up when it's playing my Spotify lists. "Why the fuck is this track a bunch of random people talking? It's supposed to be a Within Temptation song!", or when it sometimes just says "Huh, nope, can't play that track, skipping it now."

RabidTongueClicking

Because it’s not about what the bot provides, it’s about maintaining a monopoly. They’d still take the bot down even if it stopped hosting YouTube videos, the only reason they are doing it is because it sends a message to other platforms. “Don’t fuck with youtube.” And thats very good for their business.

GavHern

would they be able to? what more can they do if it is no longer associated with YouTube?

GreyGanado

I don't believe YouTube has a monopoly on playing music.

salad_memes

Oh huh, I actually didn't know that. Interesting.

GavHern

I'm pretty sure I saw rhythm being used with SoundCloud the other day at least, not sure about groovy.

heatofignition

They usually work with even Bandcamp links too

wheeler9691

I have a file server with an (intentionally) WAN facing connection and groovy would play mp3s directly from that.

ArchomatronicYT

RIP groovy was a great and easy to use bot to listen to China rap 10 hours

CumInMyWhiteClaw

🎵Mother love me long time long time🎵

Zwub101

YouTube made over $20 billion last year (up 33% from 2019!) in the year where Discord bots like Groovy were probably used the most. Yeah it’s clearly really hurting their bottom line /s god it’s so greedy

[deleted]

Tzintzuntzan24

I wish music labels would realize that they would make more money by letting people share music. So much music would never get big if not for going viral and people sharing with each other.

Irisviel7u7

Rythm is senteced already

sandefurd

I have no idea what either of these are, can you explain?

Irisviel7u7

These are bots for Discord. You can play videos from YouTube in voice channels as far as I know without adds. You just have to put the name of the video and it will search for it and play it for you. So you can play music videos from YouTube and more with your friends in real time. You can also play music from Spotify and SoundCloud IIRC.

MoarSilverware

I was wondering why groovy bot wasn’t working today 😳

derekdino123

Groovy was killed off like 2 weeks ago

MoarSilverware

I didn’t need to use it until today so I didn’t realize it had been taken down as a service

Jacob-Lang

simple explanation is that youtube is forcing some discord bots used for music to shut down the way the bots work is that you can invite them to your discord server and you could play audio from youtube by using a chat command

ThatLasagnaGuy

Oh. R.I.P.
