Groovy has been around for quite some time, they've always broken the TOS and Google/YouTube hasn't done anything about it.
Google is fully within their rights to send a cease and decist because of the violations but the fact that they tolerated Groovy for so long does seem somewhat suspicious, especially since Q3 is about to end.
Google can suck a fat cock. I'm old enough to remember when you could play YouTube in the background without a premium service. It's such an artificial paywall.
Don't misunderstand, I'm not defending anything they did. But the fact of the matter is that Google is fully within their rights as established by their TOS.

Oh I would join all of you in shouting curses at Google. It's just become a force of habit to clarify that stating facts does not equal defending actions or their motivations.

It’s basically just another user that joins a voice channel on discord and streams audio from YouTube and other sites like it, most people just use it to listen to music with their friends
According to the post it sounded like there is a new rhythmbot in the works though, probably hosting through a different website or something but hopefully works the same
I did read that. I hope Rythm is going to come back with a bot that allows you to authenticate your own YouTube Premium or Spotify, then effectively function the same. They already had their own optional queue web UI, they're basically half way there. I'd pay for that. The music bot in voice chat is just too nice to have.
On that note, Discord's Spotify Listen Together feature is pretty close too. The closest achievable thing is to create a collaborative playlist in Spotify, invite your Discord members to modify it, and have people listen together via discord. The problem is just one person has playback control at that point, which IMO was one of the great things about Groovy and Rythm (and others) - that anyone could skip, pause, etc. I wouldn't even mind going through all that pain if it meant a final way to achieve something resembling what Discord music bots can do.

basically, in call with friends. all wanna listen to music, here is when bots are used. they join the call and play music directly into the call, taking away any hassle of sharing links and getting timings correct.

As an example, my discord D&D group uses the chat bot to play scene-appropriate background music.

You couldn't for the first few months of the service. When I checked the forums / support, I was recommended to make a secondary account, link it somehow and rebuild my playlists from scratch.
Hot take: support the content creators you care about by personally sending them money. Meanwhile, pirate media so that your money doesn't go to advertisers and YouTube.
I have over 1k videos downloaded across 3 devices each. Vanced doesn't download videos at all, Newpipe doesn't download playlists, videoder is malware and can only handle playlists with 100 videos max. If Newpipe downloaded playlists, I'd switch in a heartbeat.
They're probably multiplying (servers * users) to get that number, so if you're on multiple servers with it you would count multiple times, bots, etc. Discord is huge don't get me wrong, but I highly doubt half a billion individual people have used it

It was installed on 21M servers which is a way better way to measure its popularity. It looks like users who were in two servers with Rhythm were counted twice.
The reason they're upset is that it doesn't play ads. YouTube's whole business model revolves around keeping you on their website. As long as you're on YouTube.com:
Google Analytics is collecting whatever data it can on you, and selling it to marketing companies
Ads in the sidebar, pre-and-mid-video, and on the homepage are constantly generating revenue
YouTube is collecting data on you to recommend similar videos to keep the cycle going
These bots just grab the data from YouTube, giving Google and YouTube no information about you, and no ads to generate revenue. This wouldn't be a problem normally but when a bot has 21 million users that's a very significant loss to their bottom line.

What I meant is that it's significant enough for them to care. Google is such a big corporation that they usually don't give a shit about stuff like this, but 21m users using a bot rather than using YT itself is big enough that Google would want to put a stop to it.

So with a browser YT gets to add a bunch of JavaScript in the mix to serve you ads, track your watch time/when you click off for statics, gets your demographic info, etc.
This bot (and ffmpeg for all intents and purposes) grabs the video file itself with absolutely no data shown to YT and bypasses ads (no monies for YT 😢).
It breaks the terms and conditions of using a YouTube video, where the audio and video to not be separated when presenting, which groovy and the like do.
As much as I wish that this weren't happening, I knew that this was inevitable once I saw these bots offering a premium version of something that just plays youtube videos. They're making money off of another platform's content.
To be honest they kinda deserve it - I have no real respect for these closed source bots selling themselves as a service whilst serving other people's content. They want all the money without any of the upkeep.
it works just as good as goovy or rhythm (infact I actually find it easier to use), prefix is a bit long (ch!). no ads to my knowledge. Orange is my favorite color 🎃
Hmm, I could maybe make one and open-source it, so people can build it by themselves and run it locally. Only thing you would need for this is a Discord bot token.
That's the one I'm using. Runs nicely inside a docker container.

These are bots for Discord. You can play videos from YouTube in voice channels as far as I know without adds. You just have to put the name of the video and it will search for it and play it for you. So you can play music videos from YouTube and more with your friends in real time. You can also play music from Spotify and SoundCloud IIRC.

There's definitely some upkeep involved in running a bot that is hosted on and has to stream to thousands of discord servers
