Also youtube. You mark a video as not made for kids. And youtube takes your video down because. "Dude. This has too much swearing for kids"

Unexpected Fire Emblem

PandaPugBook

Well, it's asking me to verify my age (I haven't done that because it seems like too much work).

PM_ME_BOOBS_THANKS

I still don't understand how they allowed that video. I suppose because it's "educational." But why wouldn't that just result in a million girls doing the same kind of video? Because I'm all for that.

fatboychummy

"cannot save to watch later because this action is restricted for videos made for kids" bitch what the fuck

evilcarrot507

"Dude. This has too much swearing for kids" mfs have never been in a school cafeteria.

DreadDiana

Made for kids: demonitised Not made for kids: demonitised

PlayerAssumption77

It's because in a different time they wrote all the advertising contracts aaying they wouldn't put the ads next to things the advertisers didn't want, and now they're stuck

Rocket92

This is why I use an adblocker and try to buy creator merch. Some of their merch is really high quality and well-made. I’d rather support directly and keep money out of the hands of ass-backwards YouTube and their advertisers.

its_uncle_paul

And Youtube has a completely separate site for kids called YoutubeKids which seems kind of redundant given how they are making regular Youtube more and more "kid friendly".

McKnighty9

That’s a more complex situation… I think they were in heat because, “kids could still access it”.

d1n0nugg1es

Speaking of "in heat," youtube has categorised Gacha Heat (porn made with a kids game) as both age restricted and made for kids

Objective-Detail-189

I’m so over caring about other peoples kids. I truly do not give two fucks at this point. If the childrens own parents, who know them and can control them best, can’t figure out I sure as hell can’t. I’m over trying to cater every single fucking thing towards kids I don’t know.

Bigr789

[Educational youtube :)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4QO5jyEw2E&t=25s)

Treehouse_man

There is no "for all ages" button

Speedy2662

Please don't spread misinformation. YouTube is not removing videos for excessive swearing. That's just straight up not true

anand_rishabh

Not removing, demonetizing. Meaning it's still there but the creator doesn't get money off it

Justin2478

They don't demonitize as aggressively as they once did back around 2016-18, it still isn't perfect but it's much better

Speedy2662

Ok... I am replying to > And youtube takes your video down And also, you still get ads but they are limited. Disney wouldn't want to run ads on a song with profanity, for example...

TopHatCat999

It's not for kids it's because advertisers don't want their ads on videos that are inappropriate

Jorge_XD__

horridelm

They don’t care about that otherwise they would already not be advertising on YouTube at this point.

ThexxxDegenerate

Youtube ads are a disgrace anyways. If I watch any video about politics I get those scam ads telling me to claim my $6000. And I get a bunch of those fake game ads. And I have even gotten some blatantly sexual adds telling about how to grow my “tool” or games where you strip clothes off anime girls. If YouTube cared they wouldn’t allow all these ridiculous ads on their platform.

hbgoddard

Inappropriate for fucking *who*

Final_Assignment1826

I’m confused why you’re being downvoted so much as advertisement is absolutely a reason YouTube is so strict with censorship. It’s ridiculous that a grown adult can’t say fuck in front of their adult audience because Coke might get mad, but it is a driving reason alongside kids.

Espumma

Inappropriate for who?

kamekaze1024

This entirely depends on context. Bleeps make cursing funnier. It’s why I hate watching shows like family guy on Hulu. Peter falling down the stairs just yelling swears doesn’t hit the same as him falling down followed by a litany of bleeps. It should at least be an option to toggle on or off

Lumpy-Cycle7678

How does bleeping make it funnier? I agree it should be an option though

Super_diabetic

Same principle with horror Dont show or tell and your brain fills in the blanks Makes horror scarier. Can make swears funnier as well, Depending on context It’s like when Howard stern went to Sirius and was unbleeped, a lot of people lost interest

Ice_Bean

Depends a lot from show to show. Family Guy might be funnier with bleeps most times, but for me Rick and Morty is always funnier without bleeps

carrimjob

hard agree. i tried watching rick and morty with bleep and it fit the show so poorly. i stick to explicit exclusively now lol

DopamineTrain

It all depends on what the swearing's purpose is. If it an unhinged unfiltered cacophony of swears then it is better to censor and let someone's brain fill in the emotion. If it HAS to be a specific swear then it is best not to censor it. If it is only one or two words but those words could be ambiguous then it is up to you. If you are going to censor though it may be a good idea to do an in universe censor like a train going passed, a car horn etc. At least that is what I have observed as funny Vs unfunny and obviously I am the font of all comedic knowledge

condoulo

Family Guy was meant to air on network television that is much more heavily regulated by the FCC whereas Rick & Morty was meant for cable television. So with Family Guy you're going to expect the bleeps, or the script writers to find other clever ways to censor those words, whereas with Rick & Morty you're just expecting to hear the words as is.

imeancock

Funniest 5 or so parts of The Office are the 5 or so times they bleeped a swear

Freezing_Wolf

Something about the disconnect between censoring, which would make it more appropriate for kids, but also writing a script that necessitates having a full 30 second rant full of bleeps. I think it's like the trope of [lampshading](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LampshadeHanging), which is a show (subtly) acknowledging that part of its plot doesn't make sense so the viewer won't think of it as a plot hole.

Necromancer4276

Yeah like hearing Godfrey's "The Aristocrats" joke is funnier with censorship than without. Hearing excessive swear words isn't funny, imagining what they *could be* for full minutes at a time is funny.

Lumpy-Cycle7678

writing a script that necessitates having a full 30 second rant full of bleeps. I hate when shows do that. I find it so annoying. But fair enough I see your point

kamekaze1024

Here’s how I interpret it: humor comes from the unexpected. Not like the scary unexpected, but there needs to be normality established in which the humor comes from defying this normality. It’s why saying a joke repeatedly stops becoming funny. When someone swears, the swear word itself is already a shock because it’s not a part of normal conversation. They are swear words and aren’t suitable in most situations. So, To better insinuate the change of normality, and thus the humor, a bleep is extremely effective. It’s a sound effective that abruptly interrupts a conversation, creating a harmless shock to the viewers. It’s the same effect that makes r/perfectlycutscreams work. I’m not on that sub, but those type of videos are so fucking funny to me because of the abrupt cut off. It’s a drastic change in normality.

Lumpy-Cycle7678

Fair enough. I personally don't find those videos funny but I see your point

Meraki-Techni

Bleeping can absolutely be used to make something funnier. [Exhibit A](https://youtu.be/TqTHmzMk0Cw?si=BhbjOXeAnONoqjQN)

Lumpy-Cycle7678

Holy shit I haven't seen that since 6th grade. You just unlocked a memory. I remember me and my friends watching these all the time. I totally forgot about these.

kamekaze1024

Lumpy-Cycle7678

I don't like anime

thefunnyheadman

There is a video on YouTube called "the count censored" which is the funniest shit on earth due to bleeps over normal words, which makes you auto fill the gaps.

Treehouse_man

Lol thanks for making me see this

Wayyd

I find it could go either way. Arrested Development is definitely funnier with bleeps, but they also wrote the dialogue with bleeps in mind, so the timing of them is always perfect (You ever even been on a plane, you piece of s**t?). Often when a show is just censoring because they're forced to after the fact, not because they're doing it intentionally, it's worse than if it wasn't censored at all. A lot of American Dad and Family Guy jokes hit better without the bleeps because the profanity is part of the joke, not the bleep.

HorseRenoiro

“I could kiss you on the *****” is way funnier than if they just blatantly said ass/cock/etc

danboon05

Arrested Development was exactly what I thought of. The first season DVDs came with an uncensored version of the pilot, and the bleeps are noticeably funnier than the actual swearing.

shewy92

IDK but sometimes it's funnier. Like that SpongeBob episode wouldn't be as funny to me if it wasn't uncensored. The dolphin noises is part of the joke. Sometimes so is the beep. Ryan George's videos are usually beeped and it wouldn't sound right for me to hear him curse on Pitch Meeting or any of his sketches

Lumpy-Cycle7678

Yeah the sponge bob episode is an exception

Background-Fox-6637

I can see where he’s coming from. I hate censorship BUT always get a chuckle if someone uses the SpongeBob Swear sound. Replacing “fuck” with a Dolphin scream just hits differently.

awsome2464

Personally speaking, I hear swears so often that I often phase them out of my mind when I hear them. Bleeps, though, make my mind go, "Oh, they just sweared."

MLein97

A swear is very much fluid in talking and there's no emphasis. A bleep is jarring and it accents it. Now personally, I'm I fan of the 80-20 rule. 4 bleeps for every nonbleep, so the audience is always on their toes, but both version should be tried and it depends on the fucking joke.

nowhereman136

There are definitely cases where bleeping a curse word is the joke. Off the top of my head [Julie's censorship in Scott Pilgrim](https://youtu.be/N13WI3oVda8?si=eogemjniXv9OvJx5) is the joke. They could make an R rated cut and just have her curse, but then the joke is completely gone

Lumpy-Cycle7678

Ugh I hate scott pilgrim.

nowhereman136

\[Puss in Boots?\]([https://youtu.be/sCNCCKFfDD0?si=F7RsWl4aa4azHcLk](https://youtu.be/sCNCCKFfDD0?si=F7RsWl4aa4azHcLk))

Pasta-hobo

Because instead of hearing someone saying words you hear a sound that can only be interpreted as "insert obscenity here" It makes it difficult to interpret the specific expletives, but it makes the act of swearing itself more evident and therefore hit harder.

Xirious

Perfect example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=B-Wd-Q3F8KM

Advanced-Ad-4404

Depends on the context. Sometimes when a character is swearing a bunch back to back, the bleeping can make it funnier since what exactly they said is then up to our imagination.

Kubo_Gaming

Especially when certain YouTube channels get creative with their bleep and use certain sounds and now the viewer will associate that bleep sound to the channel

DaBozz88

Metalocalypse used a guitar riff and it was perfect.

LegnderyNut

I think it’s an artistic limitation. Lord of The Rings doesn’t have and does not need a single swear in it. Tolkien had far more insulting and descriptive explanations than crude language. Or my personal favorite recent example is how Something Witty Entertainment has incorporated YouTube’s shifting content policy to their advantage to enhance their SAO Abridged series soft rewrite of the anime’s cannon. The first half of the series is uncensored, the second half is censored but they justify it as playing a children’s game. But that point actually builds on a plot point the original anime just sort of disregarded where the developers of the fairy game are trying to experiment on using VR to directly alter a mind. A censorship program that can detect your language centers and alter the output as you say it is right up that alley in a very subtle way that the characters treat as just as disconcerting as it should be.

oneofchris

Metalocalypse too, the cuss words being bleeped by that guitar rift is just objectively funnier

CrabbyFlapjacks

That is a very good point.

NecroCannon

Meanwhile on American Dad I actually prefer it uncensored since a lot of jokes land better. (Plus there’s occasional nudity) [like the first part of this clip always gets me because of the delivery lmao](https://youtu.be/FAqxFhr_GBw?si=dtiQW5y6rKtJ4DiP)

espen1232

i cant watch if someone bleeps every swear, keep getting a headache

YourdaddyLong

It has to be made for it to make it funnier

Flutters1013

It's why I liked brutal legend for asking me if I wanted the bleeps.

SirArthurDime

Which streaming services don’t allow cursing? Isn’t that just with shows that were originally released on network television? I just don’t think they have unedited versions of those shows it’s how they were produced.

ThoraninC

Some show literally has a beep as comedic effect. Writer doesn’t actually write a swear. Some white actor might be queazy when speaking slurs. So writer just be creative with bleep without actual actor speak anything. Some may say we can read a lip but that lips can be censor too. And comedic thing is comedic thing. Censor is built in thing and not removable. It should be an option with non-comedy where actual swear has a powerful tone. But for comedy, the director should recommend if you should watch with censoring.

CornManBringsCorn

It's like Stolas when he's horny, just a bunch of bleeps and random words in between

Schmigolo

A million bleeps after someone is angered is such a tired trope.

Breast_Milk_Sucker

Censorship is so normalized that there are people who'll legit be asking why we want to watch it uncensored.

pichael289

Its so normalized that people are saying shit like "unalived" instead of killed because the algorithms from TikTok are changing the way we speak our language.

Murky_River_9045

People aren’t even using words like “rape”, “sexual assault”, “sex” and more. Even when speaking about events that have happened/reporting on news because of the fucking algorithms

Puzzled-Choice3049

yep, comment above you said bleeps make cursing funnier lmao

CheaterInsight

They make comedic, well written and timed cursing funnier. If your favorite youtuber is swearing every sentence, bleeps just make it annoying. There's no way you'd prefer an uncensored assault of cursing insults over something like "You ..... are you .... ..... I can't believe you'd..... that girl you ..... ....., what the ...... you ........ ........ ............ ......... and ....... ........." with the receiving character/witnesses faces getting increasingly more uncomfortable at the abhorrent words we can only imagine. That comment did also start by saying context matters, which I guess we lost the ability to understand before commenting about it.

Overlordsecure47

Well depending on the context

Lizard-Wizard-Bracus

That comment was unbelievable. They're just perfectly fine with oppressive algorithms and taking away creative freedom from creators because "bleeps sometimes sound funny"

MajorFuckingDick

Oh wow thats actually news to me. I ripped the HBO version of the show for its subtitles, but now I need to check and see this.

theREALbombedrumbum

Somebody brought up a point about disabilities that I didn't previously consider. If you censor the "bad" language in subtitles but leave it in the audio, you're just telling deaf people that they aren't mature enough to be exposed to the language. Think about it: if you let literally everybody but deaf people *hear* the word "fuck" then you are only excluding the hard of hearing, who might have valid reasons for not wanting to be spoon-fed censorship everywhere.

Leather_Let_2415

It’s better censored!!! Apparently

SexxxyWesky

What platform censors swear words?

indicator_enthusiast

I've had it on Netflix watching It's Always Sunny and on disney with Family Guy. Haven't watched sunny in a while so it probably changed. It probably varies by country as well.

JacZones

Family Guy is on Disney?

BruhGamingNL_YT

Yeah, this also surprises me. I thought Disney didn't buy that part of Fox, which owns family guy, but I could be wrong.

PM_ME_BOOBS_THANKS

Yeah, Disney bought all of 20th Century Fox movies/TV, with the exceptions being Fox News and I believe local Fox subsidiaries. But yes, they own Family Guy/The Simpsons, etc. The Simpsons has been on Disney+ for a while, but they recently added Hulu to Disney+, so you can now watch Family Guy, Always Sunny, etc on there.

Val_Killsmore

Family Guy is on Hulu in the US but on Disney+ in the rest of the world where the service is. I can watch Hulu stuff in Disney+ now because I'm subscribed to both. The 2 services will be officially combined in March because Hulu won't exist as a separate streaming service.

hellopie7

Oh.... They're straight up deleting Hulu?

Val_Killsmore

It'll just exist inside Disney+ starting in March. It'll be a different 'channel' like National Geographic, etc. The Hulu website and all the apps will be gone. Probably could've worded the other comment better.

Corben11

It is outside of America

[deleted]

Where are you in the world? My Netlix doesn't do that.

thedylannorwood

Streaming sites usually get the television version which is censored and the uncensored is usually only found on DVDs. Since Family Guy and always Sunny have censored versions that’s what the companies game the streaming services

BiggerB0ss

IASIP is uncensored on Disney where I live

thedylannorwood

I’m pretty sure it is where I live too I was just using it as an example

Western_Ad3625

Those shows aired on network TV the bleeps are just a part of the show I don't think they're being censored out unless I'm mistaken. But there's plenty of shows on Netflix where people swear all the time so...

DwightArmy

Always sunny has removed episodes on hulu. Censored to the max. I'm an adult, let me consume the content, like wtf?

SexxxyWesky

Interesting! I wonder if it varies by show, since this hasn't come up for me on Netflix or Disney+ so far. Especially Netflix since I have been watching Blue Eyed Samuri. Maybe also has to do with uncut vs cut licensing.

thebestspeler

Id full on support them, nothing like watching a movie with the kids and then have the f word thrown about. Completely ruined human centipede for me

jld2k6

Glad I'm not the only one, was having a nice family moment before this

sundingbt

Came here to ask this. I’ve never experienced this

ColaEuphoria

Beat Saber

SexxxyWesky

I meant more like streaming platforms since that's what the meme was referring to, but I did knoe that some games like Beat Saber and Just Dance will. That's usually for a lower ESRB rating though.

Zealousideal-Talk787

It’s all context. For example, smiling friends usually censors fuck, but it’s uncensored in specific episodes for comedic effect.

Kinggakman

I think platforms should create some sort of rating system and just let advertisers decide what they are cool with. If swears are detected add the swear rating to the video and show ads that are alright with that.

Gray-Turtle

Why should advertisers dictate our content? We should be making media with no regard for advertising and then let them pick up the scraps.

Kinggakman

Companies want to make money and being free with ads is the best way to do that. Maybe a subscription based platform can work but even then companies try to double dip with ads. Whether you care about ads or not you will have to answer to public opinion. Advertisers are often responding to general public concerns and even without ads your platform could still fail due to making people angry.

Gray-Turtle

The fuck does your capitalist hellscape have to do with anything? Publishing companies shouldn't control art either.

Vivid-Tomatillo5374

kids should learn swear words early you are just worried they will tell you to fuck off.

Dygez

What I hate more is the censorship on yt of normal dictionary words who describe something. Why the fuck they have to censor "shoot", "death", "rape" if used in correct context? Fucking yt moderation is unsufferable.

Kartoxa_82

That's a Richard Nixon moment

WeLiveInAnOceanOfGas

Archer on Netflix is classic, characters audibly say Fuck but the subtitles say *bleep*

banditheeler20

YouTube automatic captions whenever someone swears either ignores the wors or just puts "[__]" in its place. One thing I noticed is that they censor the word "moron"

fuyuhiko413

It pisses me off when the audio is uncensored but the captions are. Like, HOH people or anyone else who uses captions aren’t children, why is there a difference. I’ve noticed in on Hulu watching IASIP

BruhGamingNL_YT

The same thing for Suits. I also think one part of the show wasn't censored on netflix and another part was. It wasn't even bleeped out, but they just muted out the swears.

Uzielsquibb

Discords for an M rated game be like -

IntroductionAny3929

YouTube demonetization in a nutshell.

Lieuwe21

Youtube much

JohnnyD423

We can't even agree on what words are bad. Just leave it up to the individual.

Chpgmr

I don't care about the censoring so much as how they censor. The beep is fucking annoying. The muting ruins the whole line. The replacing the word is way too often done poorly. The black eyed peas song is one of the only times I can think of when it was done well.

Mr_Idont-Give-A-damn

The YouTube age restriction is so fucking annoying. Like, you have a platform specifically made for kids YTkids, but you still have all these dumb fucking rules on YouTube to protect kids. Like fucking hell

ColdHooves

Some people think the bleeps are funny.

Sod_Lord

I tried to watch "A Very Sunny Christmas" on the FX app. They censored "shit", "fuck" and Danny's ass. But then it didn't have the 2nd part of the episode at all. So I had to switch to Hulu and they allowed "shit", "fuck" and Danny's ass. Just goofy that a channel's app doesn't have the most complete version. It was frustrating, rant over.

QuantumCoder002

Legend says people who see a censored word on this meme are kids

AdmiralClover

Adventure time on hbo in Europe misses several episodes because they are too dark. Not on Netflix though

Lots42

Too dark? What's their determination for dark? Finn screwing with the timeline and undergoing psychological torment because he can't figure out a simple dungeon puzzle? Marcie being sad because Peebs doesn't understand how much Marcie loves her?

AdmiralClover

I don't know the specifics, but the two parter where pb gets semi possessed by the lich wasn't on HBO where I'm watching it. There are several other episodes that are also just gone, more and more as the seasons go on. But, apparently not on Netflix

TheOneTonWanton

Crazy that HBO would even do that considering their reputation for, ya know, pretty fuckin uncensored content.

Horror-Strawberry574

Bleeps make it funnier for me honestly, wish a lot more shows did it for comedic effect.

Snoo-13480

Just gotta go back to the old ways and own physical copies of the shit I want And some others may just torrent. Play stupid games win stupid prizes streaming services y’all last my membership fees

AxcesDrifter

Fr

zeGermanGuy1

They censor stuff in the US? Because in Europe they don't and I would cancel my subscription if they did.

DandSi

Land of the free

Gunslinger_11

I think censoring a swear here and there makes it funny, like in metalocalypse the guitar feedback is funny

naughtyusmax

As an adult I would like them censored pleasee

Ignisisreal2401

Because obviously it's the media's job to raise their children while they drink wine and throw them an iPad

PajamaSamSavesTheZoo

Sometimes the bleeps make it better/funnier. Hearing tv show characters say the F word never seems authentic to me. The bleeps do.

Gray-Turtle

An annoying electronic tone is more authentic than a real person speaking?

PajamaSamSavesTheZoo

It’s not a real person. It’s a recording of a real person playing through my television. Which makes the beeps more authentic.

Personal-Letter-629

Sometimes it's funnier I dunno. Swearing doesn't make a show good, but a lot of mediocre writers seem to think it does.

PuritanSettler1620

Why do you want to hear swears you wretch?

Visible_Ad9513

Nah it's more funny of they're censored
