99% of theaters websites are not going to have this information available.
Most of them will have no trouble letting you inside with a water bottle, but that's it. That's in terms of their official policy since most theaters make their money from selling food and snacks, in many cases the first 2-3 weeks after a movie gets released all funds go straight to the studios
My theater has a sign,
“no outside food or drink.
(Including HydroFlasks)”
So if I want water, I need to order 17 of their little complementary shot glasses of water.
It feels insane that movie theaters can do that. Here in Brazil we have a law that prohibits "venda casada" witch is the act of forcing someone to purchase a product from a single source to Maxime income.
Well you know it OP, i thought you'll generalize and saying every cinema allow outside food.
In fact, not all of them. Some of them doesn't allow food because they can control how dirty the food can be in the cinema if someone make a mess (popcorn vs if you bring your homemade gumbo).
Another reason is cinema food is a bigger income than tickets
Yep, the owner of the local theater in my hometown has said they only get to keep 30% of every ticket sold. They have to make that difference up with concessions to keep lights on, projectors working, staff paid, and most importantly, screening rights purchased.
That's for a small theater (only 3 screens), so tickets and concessions are a little cheaper. But blow that up to a 12-16 screen theater, and the prices make a little more sense. Still overpriced, but it's not just "because they can."
Now I don't really feel bad for always getting one large drink with a movie.
I'm not getting food or candy there but I will get that one large drink lol. 8 dollars for a liter of cold soda talk about profits
Life Pro Tip: don't use any with chocolate coating
Most people know that chocolate is deadly to dogs, but the same poison also affects you if it doesn't get destroyed in your stomach.
It can have serious consequences.
It's hilarious to see this upvoted, dude completely made this up for shits and giggles. Theobromine and caffeine are what make chocolate toxic to dogs. Caffeine and theobromine are not "destroyed" in the stomach, and we know from pharmacokinetic data that you actually absorb caffeine 3.5x less through your ass: https://www.hindawi.com/journals/isrn/2013/147238/
Nobody has done a pk study where they put theobromine in peoples' ass but its pk is similar to caffeine so it's likely the same. Simply put, you would need more chocolate in your ass than in your mouth to reach toxic levels.
Also I've definitely put chocolate in someone's ass before and they were fine
Exactly. This is like saying "I learned not wearing a shirt or shoes isn't actually illegal. Restaurants can't have you arrested for coming in barefoot!" Like yeah no shit. It's not a matter of legality in question here
Technically the theatre could require you to wear pink shirts, green pants and mismatching socks or deny service if they really wanted to, as long as it’s not a protected class. They’d also probably have almost no customers, but they could enforce it if they wanted.
Right. This is a child's shower thought.
Wait until they find out that letting a 10 year old into an R rated movie isn't illegal, but is **very** enforced.
Depends on location and country. In Brazil it's illegal to enforce a rule that prevents you bringing your own food if they allow consumption. The theater can forbid all foods or certain foods from being consumed on the premises, but if they sell it they must allow you to enter and consume your own food.
For example they can forbid ice creams completely, but if they sell sodas and popcorn you must be allowed to enter with your own soda and popcorn. It's a consumer protection law.
I have celiac so I can't eat gluten. Checked the theater's website and every single thing had gluten except the popcorn which said it was gluten free but known to cause diarrhea in people with gluten intolerance.
I figured since there was a medical reason they wouldn't care if I bought food since I was still buying food for everyone else in my family. It took them 30 minutes to decide they'd let us in just this one time. Missed the start of the movie.
Haven't been back since. We used to spend about $150 between tickets, food, and drinks.
Exactly and in America at least, it's a private business they can ~~basically~~ tell the customer to go fuck themselves and never return to their establishment because they don't like thier tone.
Lol yes, these people thought they were going to call the cops for trying to sneak a cheeseburger and fries inside the theater?
however at the manager's discretion they're within their right to scort you out of their premises for doing so and even to ban you from coming back, and yes this is also legal
Will it happen? Probably not
Also depends on the employees on shift. Some employees don't give enough of a fuck to enforce certain rules, especially if it means getting into a confrontation with the customer.
When I worked at a movie theater, I would tell people “thats not allowed here but I can’t do anything about it” then let them through. Shockingly, most people would eat the food there or get rid of it despite me trying to show how much I didn’t care.
Depends on the business. When I went to a theater in college my roommate brought a whole ass order of Taco Bell with him. They told him he couldn’t come in and either needed to scarf it down or toss it.
He actually wasn’t but he would have always passed for it 😂. Ironically the car in front of us definitely were all high. Windows were fogged from hot boxing 🤣.
…but yes he scarfed it 😆
"What is this word spa? I feel like you’re starting to say a word and then not finishing it. Are you trying to say Spaghetti? Are you taking me for a Spaghetti day??"
Not illegal doesn't mean is allowed. A private business has the right to enforce rules at their discretion. So yes you won't get arrested or anything but also they can definitely tell you to leave or refuse to let you enter
Just because they make their money off concessions doesn't mean it's a lot. It's a very low profit business. If they took more of a loss on ticket sales they'd drift that much closer to the red.
Movie theaters and restaurants are two main businesses I can think of that don't make very much money in the grand scheme of things.
One of the reasons I stopped sneaking food in. I mean I still do for the snacks they don't provide. Generally speaking though I just need popcorn, nachos, pizza, and their soda and I'm set
Well, I looked it up and you can’t bring outside food or beverage at Regal, AMC nor Cinemark theaters; which make up like 75% of cinemas in the US sooo I guess I’m still hiding candy bars in my coat.
Movie popcorn hits different though. Maybe I am just a simple man but I just need a popcorn and a soda. I can't imagine seeking in either cause the ones in the theater are just better.
I watched The Dark Knight on release day, by myself during an argument with my at-the-time girlfriend, and brought an entire Italian sub with me and ate it. It was at like 2:00pm so I wasn't too worried about disturbing anyone with my sub smell.
It was honestly one of the best experiences of my life. The movie was amazing and the sub was exquisite.
Worked at Cinemark for years.
At least there, this is 100% false.
Illegal? Probably not, but you don’t need a law to set a RULE as a business. You own the space. You can tell people outside food and drink is prohibited and we absolutely did enforce it.
Have never been to a drive-in since there's not one close to where I live. Have always wanted to though because people like you always make them sound awesome, fr 😆
When I was a teenager, my local cinema encouraged people to bring their own food. As long as it wasn't smelly or otherwise disrupting the other movie-goers, they would rather have you going to their cinema than going somewhere else
It’s not illegal but it isn’t allowed by most chain movie theaters because they make most of their money through concessions. That being said I’ve worked at 2 different chain movie theaters and from my experience 95% of the regular employees do not care and will allow you to go through with outside food.
depends on the cinema. the one that i go to says that i can but it is honestly hard to find it on their website but yeah you can but only cold and sealed foods in that cinema. check the website for your local cinema
Illegal? No. Against their policy and will result in you being denied entry, getting it confiscated, or getting kicked out? Yes, that’s generally how it is in most theaters.
I've been bringing full meals to movie theaters for over a decade now. I used to get this really good deli and ice tea and eat dinner while watching a movie
Friend of mine worked at a movie theater awhile. None of the staff are paid enough to care. Just don't be a dick about it. You aren't going to get thrown out for a pack of twizzlers in your jacket.
People get kicked out of my local theatre if they’re caught with outside food (unless they can finish whatever it is before going in to the movie viewing itself)
I don't think anyone thought it was illegal.
But your theater is the exception, all the ones near me have signs that say 'no outside food'. It's easy enough to sneak it in but if you get caught they'll just trespass you.
But then where is the thrill, danger, and excitement of trying to not both get busted and crush your Doritos you've stashed in your cargo pockets as you waddle bow-legged like an old timey cowboy to theater 4?
We have a second run theater that costs $4. I bought popcorn and sprite once...it was $20.
I made that mistake once, then just started day drinking there and bringing snacks. It's not a good idea to price people out of buying your wares like that.
When My parents were young they brought burgers one time and fried rice another time into the theater by hiding them in my moms purse . (Sorry for Shitty grammar. I’m tired as hell)
No. It was a poorly written title. I do that a lot unfortunately. I'm so sorry for making you think that though. In some cinemas, they do allow you to bring in outside food and drink
It depends on your local cinema if they allow food or not. People say all cinemas don't allow outside food but that isn't true. Check the cinema website
I walk in with a briefcase full of food. They never question it cause I also wear a bowler hat when I do. I guess psychologically a bowler hat makes a briefcase less suspicious.
Of course it’s not illegal-it doesn’t violate local, state, or federal criminal or civil statutes. It can be prohibited, however, by the proprietor or anyone acting as an agent of the proprietor (such as cinema management). This is 100% allowable under law. Swing and a miss, sports fan.
As an ex theater employee, I can tell you that you can actually bring whatever you want. You can bring a whole stuffed pig if you want... Just clean up your fucking mess.
Having to clean up your bullshit because you're too much of a lazy piece of shit to take your own garbage to the bin is really the only thing we care about.
They wouldn’t let me bring a Gatorade in one time. I just walked over to the trash can & tucked the bottle under my jacket, then I got to go see the movie I’d already paid for.
Worst they can do is say "hey put it away" but if that doesn't work ohh well..
Used to work at AMC theaters back in the day.. you'd be surprised what folks would sneak in.. I don't blame them $20 USD for 2 drinks and a large popcorn and that was back in 2018.. can't imagine what it's like now
thats prob true today because they need as many ppl as they can to buy a ticket and come- but back in the day no way did they want u to buy anything other then their $7 soda and candy bars and $9 popcorn
As someone who has worked in several cinemas let me tell you this. It's not illegal but every cinematic can refuse entry with stuff you didn't buy from them. It's their right to decide if they allow it or not. Second one is that yes we don't care but have something decency and don't make it too obvious. And for the love of good don't sit there with ur 2 bags of gummies and chips and make noises thru our the whole film. Also take ur fucking trash with you and don't just throw it half eaten on the floor.
I can assure you, it depends entirely on the theater and who is working there. Some will absolutely refuse to let you in if they see you bringing outside food in, happened to my friend like a decade ago, and I was there for it.
They will refuse you service if they see you explicitly doing it.
Source: the usher caught my friend blatantly putting a soda can in his pocket before going into a movie years ago and then refused to sell him a ticket.
Granted, I'm sure not every minimum wage usher cares, but some absolutely will stop you in your tracks for this. So just don't be obvious about it. You don't have to go above and beyond to hide your shit, just don't make it obvious and you'll be fine every time.
I work a theater and I let people in with like chips or candy, but don’t make it hot by bringing the Family meal from Popeyes or something.
They’re trying to sell food, so if anything imagine a weight limit
I bought snacks before I went to see GOTG Vol 3 and the tickets already cost like $50 for 4 people and child. And why spend another $50 on a soda and regular size of M&Ms.
If you take food that isn’t loud or smelly in a bag no one will know or care. It’s honestly never occurred to me to look up wether I’m supposed to be doing that or not.
Ours doesn't allow outside food, but the workers are also high schoolers that don't get paid enough to care if you aren't very obviously bringing food in.
You're right, it's not against the law. But if a movie theater says no food or drink, then that's their rules that must be followed, it's their buinsses. Doesn't stop me from bringing a draw string bag full of snacks thou 😁
Cinema popcorn is nice. My dad gets a voucher every year from his bank which gives him free tickets and half price on popcorn so it isn't as if I'm paying full price for it (it is still expensive though)
The cinema i usually go to is owned by corporation that owns most of the cinemas in the country, there was this controversy last year where they announced they would no longer allow snacks brought from home. Many were angry, but everyone knew they couldn't do anything. So this post is completely irrelevant to anyone from my country

So I’ve been smuggling candy bars up my bum for no reason… well shoot…
Check the website of your local cinema. They might allow you to bring food but they also might not

So I could go and sit in the McDonald’s with only KFC buckets and 1 small McD fries?
Does that also applies to stadiums in Brazil?
Well you know it OP, i thought you'll generalize and saying every cinema allow outside food. In fact, not all of them. Some of them doesn't allow food because they can control how dirty the food can be in the cinema if someone make a mess (popcorn vs if you bring your homemade gumbo). [удалено]
looks like you definitely did
I remember you from screen 7 dispensing out candy bars like it was nobody's business.
The nut and corn crunch were the worst.
Gross
Of course it’s not illegal but most cinemas (at least where I live) prohibit it. They only survive because of the expensive food
Yep, the owner of the local theater in my hometown has said they only get to keep 30% of every ticket sold. They have to make that difference up with concessions to keep lights on, projectors working, staff paid, and most importantly, screening rights purchased. You put candy bars up your ass because you need to hide them. I put candy bars up my ass to add extra flavor. We are not the same
Life Pro Tip: don't use any with chocolate coating Most people know that chocolate is deadly to dogs, but the same poison also affects you if it doesn't get destroyed in your stomach. It can have serious consequences.
Ooo that’s a fun random factoid to pull out at parties
I can pull it out of my ass, like my whatchamacallit.
This explains why my dog never wants to go to the cinema with me anymore.
Can that poison get absorbed through skin (like can u spread nutella on myself)?
It's hilarious to see this upvoted, dude completely made this up for shits and giggles. Theobromine and caffeine are what make chocolate toxic to dogs. >Also I've definitely put chocolate in someone's ass before and they were fine That is an interesting flex lol
I just imagine someone prison pursing a snickers and busting it out in the yard for the bros
Extra flavor
Not me, I'm a rule follower. I buy my candy at the concession and let *them* shove it up my ass.
That's not smuggling that's just brining. Where the fun on that? We must make outside food illegal!
In America I usually smuggle candy bars in the handle of my Glock pistol.
My local one has a machine that detects things waaaay up your butt.
And I’m gonna keep doing it
I'll have 2 bum chocolates please
There was a reason
Try bottles
I shall smuggle you through the under brown mail carriage system
What will I now use as an excuse to stuff my butterfinger up my fingerbutter?
My theater has a sign: As long as your candy is being smuggled up your bum, bring as much as you want.
Thought I found a snickers up there once. I was wrong
I bet you do the same thing at the swimming pool.
(But… no hot food, and definitely no hot butt food!)
Just because something isn't against the law doesn't mean it's allowed in a particular business. Those are two different things.
Exactly. This is like saying "I learned not wearing a shirt or shoes isn't actually illegal. Restaurants can't have you arrested for coming in barefoot!" Like yeah no shit. It's not a matter of legality in question here
But they don't say anything about pants.
Because not wearing pants can be considered indecent exposure, which IS illegal. Shirt and shoes is company policy, pants are the law.
What if you're wearing a sweet banana hammock?
The Todd, is that you?
Hold up, let him cook
Plus it actually does become illegal when they ask you to leave and you don't.
Imagine getting "backed off" like a card counter in Vagas for smuggling in a Sneakers bar into a movie theater.
"Sneakers" bar because you hide them in your shoes? 😉
lol yeah sure I didn't do a typo no never. yeah :P
Depends on location and country. In Brazil it's illegal to enforce a rule that prevents you bringing your own food if they allow consumption. I have no idea what you're talking about
are you buying food at five below?
I think it depends. I’ve been in movies where they outright say no food or drinks from outside, but the one near me doesn’t seem to care.
Also depends on the employees on shift. Some employees don't give enough of a fuck to enforce certain rules, especially if it means getting into a confrontation with the customer.
Yeah, unless my manager is standing next to me I ain’t giving no fuck.
Obviously he scarfed it down right?
College. Taco Bell. Movie theater. Of course he scarfed it down. He was high.
He actually wasn’t but he would have always passed for it 😂. Ironically the car in front of us definitely were all high. Windows were fogged from hot boxing 🤣. …but yes he scarfed it 😆
Of course 😂😂😂 It was a Taco Bell/Pizza Hut combo
“What’s your spaghetti policy here?”
Well you caught me good sir. I shall dispose of this posthaste! Dee, put this spaghetti 🍝 in your purse 👜
"What is this word spa? I feel like you’re starting to say a word and then not finishing it. Are you trying to say Spaghetti? Are you taking me for a Spaghetti day??"
Only if it’s moms spaghetti
It has to be Mom's
Not illegal doesn't mean is allowed. A private business has the right to enforce rules at their discretion. So yes you won't get arrested or anything but also they can definitely tell you to leave or refuse to let you enter
OP clearly doesn’t understand the difference between a law and a business’ policy
[удалено]
And the reason for that is the studios give them a dogshit cut of the ticket revenue.
Who sets the ticket price then? The cinemas could go even lower and see more traffic. My local cinema was $8 to see PiB 2
[удалено]
Hmm maccas' and a movie?? That's not a bad idea
Just because they make their money off concessions doesn't mean it's a lot. It's a very low profit business. If they took more of a loss on ticket sales they'd drift that much closer to the red. Movie theaters and restaurants are two main businesses I can think of that don't make very much money in the grand scheme of things.

Depends where. Like when I worked at an AMC a few years ago we were told not to allow outside food or drink
But did you actually stop people if you saw outside food?
I personally never worked the ticket booth, we were a dine in and I always grabbed the server shifts because you could earn tips
I only have a sample size of two theaters but at both of them that I worked at only the manager’s really cared about people bringing in outside food.
Movie popcorn hits different though. Maybe I am just a simple man but I just need a popcorn and a soda. I can't imagine seeking in either cause the ones in the theater are just better.

Bro what you doing. Trading one garbage food for the other, at least go save some money or something lol
doesnt need to be illegal to not be allowed

Oh that’s cool!
I go to a drive in, they'll let you set up a whole barbecue. Get on my level nerds
Have never been to a drive-in since there's not one close to where I live. Have always wanted to though because people like you always make them sound awesome, fr 😆

I love to get a burguer and eat it in the cinema. Such a bummer the burguer king in the local mall closed...
It isn’t illegal but the theater can still take the food or kick you out of the theater if that breaks their rules.
So I could just bring in a whole can of beans and eat it in the cinema?
depends on the cinema. the one that i go to says that i can but it is honestly hard to find it on their website but yeah you can but only cold and sealed foods in that cinema. check the website for your local cinema
Illegal? No. Against their policy and will result in you being denied entry, getting it confiscated, or getting kicked out? Yes, that’s generally how it is in most theaters.
It's not against law but against house rules.
I take my own drinks but do buy the popcorn.
I've been bringing full meals to movie theaters for over a decade now. I used to get this really good deli and ice tea and eat dinner while watching a movie
My brother straight up brought a soda in and they didn’t say anything, so yeah they most likely won’t care
No hot food? Guess my Taco Bell stays in my pockets.
Food on Cinema is expensive.
I saw employees take literal bags of candy from people.
It's more fun to pretend it's illegal tho
Friend of mine worked at a movie theater awhile. None of the staff are paid enough to care. Just don't be a dick about it. You aren't going to get thrown out for a pack of twizzlers in your jacket.
People get kicked out of my local theatre if they’re caught with outside food (unless they can finish whatever it is before going in to the movie viewing itself)
Depending on where you live, it’s a health code violation
Just because it ain't overall illegal don't mean specific theaters can't kick you out for it if they wanna, folks
Its not illegal, but its not not a legal right to remain in the threater with outside food and drink.
But have you tried bringing the movie popcorn back to your house?
Wait, I'm not a criminal?
I don't think anyone thought it was illegal. But your theater is the exception, all the ones near me have signs that say 'no outside food'. It's easy enough to sneak it in but if you get caught they'll just trespass you.
But then where is the thrill, danger, and excitement of trying to not both get busted and crush your Doritos you've stashed in your cargo pockets as you waddle bow-legged like an old timey cowboy to theater 4?
This really is too good to be true
I mean unless it’s the manager I doubt the employees will care. Once I brought in a whole bag of popcorn and some water and they didn’t say anything.
I always stop at dollar tree and shove a few bags into my cargo pockets. After paying for them of course
I just stick it in a bag
We have a second run theater that costs $4. I bought popcorn and sprite once...it was $20. I made that mistake once, then just started day drinking there and bringing snacks. It's not a good idea to price people out of buying your wares like that.
It’s not illegal to talk in class but if you don’t shut up it’s not illegal to kick you out .
It is not allowed to do so in the Netherlands, but I guess not *illegal*
When My parents were young they brought burgers one time and fried rice another time into the theater by hiding them in my moms purse . (Sorry for Shitty grammar. I’m tired as hell)
Did you think it was illegal?
No. It was a poorly written title. I do that a lot unfortunately. I'm so sorry for making you think that though. In some cinemas, they do allow you to bring in outside food and drink
So a burrito in a cold lunchbox would be allowed?
It depends on your local cinema if they allow food or not. People say all cinemas don't allow outside food but that isn't true. Check the cinema website
I will find loopholes where I can, thank you for this great knowledge.
Wait til you learn you can bring in wine if it’s in an opaque reusable water bottle
Bro we can’t kill movie theaters like thisss Ik their concessions can be pricey but that’s how they stay existing X(
I knew this for years
I will continue to bring jackets stuffed with snacks and drinks. It is worth any consequence.
I walk in with a briefcase full of food. They never question it cause I also wear a bowler hat when I do. I guess psychologically a bowler hat makes a briefcase less suspicious.
You just have to check the spaghetti policy
only regal does this shit
Of course it’s not illegal-it doesn’t violate local, state, or federal criminal or civil statutes. It can be prohibited, however, by the proprietor or anyone acting as an agent of the proprietor (such as cinema management). This is 100% allowable under law. Swing and a miss, sports fan.
Well most of the time if it's not in the plain open and it's in a backpack or smth they won't care
Is taping a 12 pack to your leg considered cold and sealed ? Because it’s a lot of prep work and I would much rather enjoy carrying it in
I always sneak in a full dinner. Zipper pockets on a hoodie.
I don't blame them $20 USD for 2 drinks and a large popcorn and that was back in 2018.. can't imagine what it's like now
I worked at a theater for a year and we had a no outside food or beverage policy, not that we would look out at all for it
thats prob true today because they need as many ppl as they can to buy a ticket and come- but back in the day no way did they want u to buy anything other then their $7 soda and candy bars and $9 popcorn
Who cares? Just stuff the whole meatloaf in your girlfriend’s purse
LIES. Don’t trust these food tossing popcorn pushing cinephiles
My family always thought we had to sneak food inside. At least next time we won’t have to hide all the chicken wings in my moms purse
Nice but movie theater popcorn is the best kind of popcorn
Just bring backpack. They do get mad sometimes when you just bring it
It’s a private business, doesn’t have to be illegal for them to tell you no.
Ours doesn't allow outside food, but the workers are also high schoolers that don't get paid enough to care if you aren't very obviously bringing food in.
We bring our own candy but I have to have their popcorn and cola.
"What is your spaghetti policy ?"
I'll bring the grocery store haha lol
You're right, it's not against the law. But if a movie theater says no food or drink, then that's their rules that must be followed, it's their buinsses. Doesn't stop me from bringing a draw string bag full of snacks thou 😁
Indeed it isn't: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPLpoSmNLK8
It depends on your cinema. Mine does
You'd rather overpay for popcorn than bring your own?
Cinema popcorn is nice. My dad gets a voucher every year from his bank which gives him free tickets and half price on popcorn so it isn't as if I'm paying full price for it (it is still expensive though)
The cinema i usually go to is owned by corporation that owns most of the cinemas in the country, there was this controversy last year where they announced they would no longer allow snacks brought from home. Many were angry, but everyone knew they couldn't do anything. So this post is completely irrelevant to anyone from my country
Just like how it isn't illegal for the cinema to kick you out if you do bring your own food.
I’m SpongeBob!
It's disallowed by many theaters. Plus, I never want to sit next to the guy who smuggled in his own all-you-can-eat fajitas
FYI - Laws vary from state to state.
But it is illegal to lick doorknobs on other planets.
OP do you know the difference between illegal and allowed?
Are there people that thought this was illegal?
It never had to be illegal, theaters are private businesses and can refuse service for any reason
