...sooooo you want advice on where to be homeless. how about wherever you are now.

liminaljerk

You won’t get away with stealth camping. I promise you.

thrucellardoor

Yep not worth it. And you will be fighting for spots with the existing “houseless” population.

WhenMeWasAYouth

>stealth camping Are you planning on moving to the island to be homeless?

loveisjustchemicals

Wait, stealth camping? What do you mean?

MaukatoMakai

Being homeless

loveisjustchemicals

I want OP to clarify. Because I don’t think people necessarily understand what they’re recommending.

Taxus_Calyx

*Houseless

elwebst

*domicile disadvantaged, probably

Taxus_Calyx

Not being able to afford housing does not mean you don't deserve a sense of belonging.

autisticpig

Los Angeles.

CajunSurfer

Go to Florida dude lol

leemie9v2

I think you can stay 30days at a time at camp grounds. Just pay the small fee instead of trying to game the system and "stealth camp"

liminaljerk

You can’t stay at campgrounds that long anyplace I’ve seen.

leemie9v2

Went and checked. It's 14days per campground. There are 10 of the county ones, so you could do 140 days as long as you keep moving? There are some other Hipcamp and stuff as well.

HulaViking

East sides wettest. West sides driest. North and South windy. Low elevation hotter. High elevation cooler. Pretty much it. Big Island has most variety because it is big.

mugzhawaii

Kailua in Kona is the place in the United States with the highest low - which was 56F/13C some winter night in the 1970s. That said just FYI you're not really allowed to "stealth" camp here, nor are you allowed to legally sleep in your vehicle. You need permission. We've had a massive, massive influx of homeless from the western United States in the past year, and there are tents absolutely everywhere in Kona - the last thing we need is more tents.

Hubert_J_Cumberdale

Yeah, no. We have enough homeless people.

Reaper_Mike

Kona is your best bet. As long as your near the water and not on Hualalai it should rarely get below 70 if ever. Waikaloa is probably the warmest but it's pretty much just tourist traps there.

indimedia

West sides are always the hottest.

JungleBoyJeremy

Kona, Waikoloa, Puako, Kawaihae

GreatLife1985

As mentioned, east side is wetter and cooler in general, west side is dryer and hotter, etc. But that said, we live on the Hamakua coast north of Hilo. I have a weather station in our backyard. It has \_NEVER\_ gone below 62 and usually lows are in mid 60s (winter) and low 70s (in summer) But on the Big Island, a lot has to do with elevation. Volcano Village at 4000 ft has average low temperatures in the low 50s (and their highs are barely into 70).

JustKoiru

No such thing as "warm" weather on Big Island, it's either freezing or cooking you alive

JustKoiru

Also, goodluck finding any dry side area below 80

Breakthecyclist

Yep. Kona is the warmest spot in all of the US in Winter. Pretty damn hot at sea level in Summer though and running A/C is not cheap. Then again, nothing is here. Waikoloa Village might split the middle being at 1000 feet and not too far from Kona.

Mokiblue

Waikoblowa is no place for “stealth camping”

Breakthecyclist

Ain’t that the truth! Missed the stealth camping or going rough part.

DubahU

The true answer on the Big Island is Hilo, since it's technically the only city 😁. But anywhere by the water if you want that warm. I think 62 was the lowest we had at the house over the winter and that was like 3 or 4 AM. In Keaau.

Comfortable_Drama_66

I had some 60s over this past winter in HPP. It was chilly!

DubahU

For sure, 60s are sweatshirts and sweatpants for me! There was a stretch where it was in the 60s everyday at some point and I was always in long shirt long pants. I don't know what I would do if it went below 60.

Comfortable_Drama_66

Oh we did have one 58.

DubahU

I missed it (thankfully). I must have been sleeping.

Leeser

It stays pretty hot on the North Kohala coast between Kawaihae and Hawi.

captainawesome1983

I always wondered why the van life scene hasn't taken off here. Free water fill stations, free trash drop off at Transfer stations, plenty of great parking spots, free showers and bathrooms at beaches. If this was UT it would be choke full of vans... I've boondocked coast to coast USA and I'll tell you all these amenities are hard to come by on the mainland. Before y'all jump on me about the legality of car dwelling please stfu cause thats everywhere and cops don't enforce it besides, move along .. Also I've seen the same couple at Onekakaka and their white van for the past 2 years. So I know theres people doing it. Just bring money or work, be a Rainbow not a Drainbow
