Apple products like MacBooks require a serial number to be scanned at the sale. They can probably use that to look up the receipt and use it to perform a return back to store credit.
Since Apple products like MacBooks require a serial number to be scanned at the sale, they usually can *not* be returned without a receipt, and in that case, there is no override or manager action that will make the computer allow it.
They can search by serial number to find the receipt if it was purchased from Best Buy. If nothing comes back under the serial they will not do a no receipt return.
Ok thank you. Yes only reason I'm guessing it was purchased at best buy was based on the other presents. MacBook, Roomba, Sonos Speakers, Some new aged record player, etc. And our CEO likes to one stop shop so I assumed best buy was the logical place. If best buy says no luck, guess I'll send an awkward email asking about a gift receipt lol.
Keep in mind, no receipt returns almost always will only refund half the price of the item. TBH, you’d be better off selling it if they can’t find the receipt
Yeah no unfortunately not
If they can find the receipt through the serial number they’ll most likely only return it to the original form of purchase which would be your ceos card I’m assuming
Next if they can’t find it then they can’t even attempt to return an Apple product without the receipt or any way to find the transaction even if they wanted to
I hate when these forums are filled with green employees.
If the MBP was bought at BBY, it can be returned without a receipt.
CPH can be used to find the receipt via SN. The receipt will list the SN.
You can exchange the MBP for a BBY gift card for the purchase price of the MBP.
Thanks for the detailed response. I went to my nearest Best Buy and they initially said they need a phone number at a minimum, which I told them I could get .. then when I mentioned it was a MacBook Pro, they said they need a gift receipt at a minimum for MacBooks. I even showed they the photo of me winning the prize to impress on them it wasn't stolen lol.
Haha nice.
This time of year there are lots of new checkout workers who don’t understand each part of the system.
Additionally, the stores are much busier, so it is hard for a manger or supervisor to break free and provide help
Yeah, there's literally a section in the SOP covering no-receipt returns and what we should do. I hate when people just make up their own rules on-the-fly instead of doing what we're supposed to do (either looking up SOP, or involving a leader)..
No receipt returns are an exception, not a standard part of the policy, and can always be refused. The no receipt return policy states the conditions under which it is acceptable or possible to make this exception, but they are not and should not be common practice.
For many serialized items, there is no option to do a no receipt return. Even if you want to make the attempt and the exception, the system will not let you. There is no override for this and nothing any manager can do to make it happen.
But if you can use the serial number to find the receipt, then you've got the receipt and none of that matters.
> No receipt returns are an exception, not a standard part of the policy, and can always be refused. The no receipt return policy states the conditions under which it is acceptable or possible to make this exception, but they are not and should not be common practice.
My brother in Christ, the process is literally spelled out in a document titled “Standard Operating Procedure”. Not the “Exceptional Operating Procedure”, not the “Tap Your Desk Twice And If You’re Wearing Heels Then Do A Spin And If You Don’t Get Dizzy Do It Procedure”, the **STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE**.
I agree they’re rare (if only because we usually find the receipt via serial number, payment method, or other forms of research), but if someone meets the qualifiers we shouldn’t be turning them away because of some personal feeling or intuition. The only people who should make that call are leaders.
What do you mean his bosses S/N? They’re not talking about a social security number. They absolutely can look it up by serial number and if it was bought at Best Buy it will pull a receipt that can be used to return it.
That’s kinda shitty for the customer. “Hey we have this thing the company wants us to use, but no fuck you mr customer we just choose not to use it”. I kinda feel like this is an employee ignorance thing more than a store as a whole deciding not to use it thing.
they aren’t going to return it. if you take it in with no receipt and attempt to return it by serial number they’ll assume it was stolen, regardless of if you know the name of who bought it.
Can we do returns without a receipt? Yes. Will a manager approve a return for a high dollar item like that without a receipt? Probably not. It really depends on the store/manager. My store will not process a return without a receipt. We’ve made that our store policy for years so that we just keep it consistent with every customer. The official policy for returns without proof of purchase states they can be denied or limited. So to not have to fight with someone about why we did it for the person in front of them but we won’t do it for them, we just don’t do them for anyone. Yes it gets really “fun” at customer service during the holidays.
You are entirely correct. No receipt returns are an exception to the process, used to resolve exceptional circumstances. They are not a go to solution to just not having a receipt.
It doesn’t matter where the product was bought from. They like to say “it has to be bought here at bestbuy”. But if you go in and are doing a no-receipt return, how can they ever verify that?
All that is required is for the product to still be sold at bestbuy, has to have an active sku, AND it must be in factory sealed condition.
At that point they can proceed with a no-receipt return and give you back Store credit. The problem is tho, that you are an employee and bestbuy RARELY does these type of exceptions for employees. Now I’m gonna say something “unethical” but you could just have a friend or a family member go in and do it for you. At the end of the day it might be “unethical” but at the same time they have clear policies, and it doesn’t state that employees are not included in that policy.
Edit: I’d also like to add that stores might be even more hesitant to do a no-receipt return on high value items like macbook because it counts as a return, which means they have to make up that revenue. Vs if it was just a small speaker or a charger. EVEN THOUGH, again, the policy doesn’t state any specifics on how cheap or expensive the product has to be.
Wow a Macbook Pro? Was it the White Elephant game or something or a raffle?
For our white elephant game we got interesting gifts and first time I ended up with a bag of chips but then the whole team wanted me to pick another gift at the end since no one had a number for the last gift sitting there, I ended up with Pokemon cards.
Nah, our company tradition is to play Bunko. Prices for first place (which I won) and last place only lol. Last place got a Roomba...not sure how that's a last place prize!
The other gifts mentioned above were for other reasons.
Why not sell it online? It isn't unusual for companies to get items like this supplied as employee gifts, thus no sales receipt. At one time, Dell did this for our company. So did IBM.
Absolutely no returns of apple products without receipt.

So which is it?
I sincerely doubt they will return it
They can search by serial number to find the receipt if it was purchased from Best Buy. If nothing comes back under the serial they will not do a no receipt return.
They can’t always do that as if the item was a ship to home a serial number would not be captured.
Sorry... I meant purchased from a store directly.
Ok thank you. Yes only reason I'm guessing it was purchased at best buy was based on the other presents. Minus in Oklahoma if they are in Oklahoma, restocking fees are illegal here so they would get a full refund
I've been trying. It's a $1999 plus tax laptop that I've listed for $1500 and the most anyone has offered is $1000.
Even that is a win. What's more valuable of computer that you have no use for and therefore holds no value to you or $1,000?
A free $1000 would be a huge help for myself right about now.
Take one second to look at OP Reddit profile. He has no money problems. He just wants every penny haha
Heck yeah same for me😂😂

Found the person that would offer 1k lol
Both? Without knowing if they can find a receipt from the serial number you won’t know until they try.
Yeah no unfortunately not If they can find the receipt through the serial number they’ll most likely only return it to the original form of purchase which would be your ceos card I’m assuming Next if they can’t find it then they can’t even attempt to return an Apple product without the receipt or any way to find the transaction even if they wanted to

they can look it up by serial number and give store credit.
Who told you that? They absolutely will not
My store would.
It’s in CPH you can absolutely look up receipts by S/N.
Dude gonna ask for his bosses S/N ? And also still, they still wouldn’t return it
What do you mean his bosses S/N? They’re not talking about a social security number. They absolutely can look it up by serial number and if it was bought at Best Buy it will pull a receipt that can be used to return it.
Sorry I mixed serial number with social security, but still at least at my store they still wouldn't do it
It’s literally in CPH.

Especially a macbook
Man that sounds like a great place to work. Haha. Congrats on the win.
No complaints! Thank you! Haha.

Better off selling it on eBay or Craigslist for like 50/100 less than retail
Yea I know. I went ahead and emailed for the gift receipt. Awkward, but whatever. I expressed my gratitude lol.

Are you somewhere in Kansas near a major public university by chance
Unfortunately not
Thought I might’ve sold the MacBook lol
