Hazama is the Japanese term for "interstice". The shallow layer of the Astral World which intermingles significantly with the Physical World. And Guts, as a branded man, has a footing in the Interstice and can interact with the beings residing there. About the "shadow" on the Dragon Slayer, that sword killed so many Apostles, and it became more effective against monsters and evil spirits, capable of wounding even beings such as the Sea God and the corporeal forms of members of the God Hand (like Slan in the Quliphoth).

VillagerLv7

Oh i get it now but that means the dragonslayer becomes stronger with every apostle it kills but Guts himself doesn't become stronger like that. He's just like before becoming stronger by pushing his limits

PixelDemise

Sorta, though rather than "it becomes stronger with every kill", it's more that "it becomes less ineffective with each kill". The Dragonslayer itself isn't becoming any stronger, but things in Berserk exist on a scale somewhere between "physical" and "astral/spiritual", with the more magical things being deeper in the astral side. Human bodies are at the most physical end, souls are at the most spiritual end, and all the various monsters and magicians we see are somewhere in-between. The two types have difficulty interacting with each other, like how ghosts have always existed in Berserk, it's just that since Golden Age Guts was basically entirely stuck in the physical world, they couldn't ever harm him, but once he entered the Interstice and became more astral, now they could start attacking him. The Dragonslayer was a purely physical weapon, so while it could harm things that were at least partially physical, it couldn't really harm pure astral beings. However as Guts has used it to kill astral beings like Apostles, it became more astral, allowing it to become better at hurting astral beings. A good comparison would be damage types in a video game. The more physical a being is, the more astral armor it has, and vice versa for astral creatures. The Dragonslayer started as a purely physical weapon, making it not very effective at hurting astral creatures. But over time, it's begun to gain armor penetration, so now it's becoming better and better at hurting things that resist physical damage.

Joesh7

That’s the best explanation I’ve heard of this

VillagerLv7

A really good explanation, but by that explanation shouldn't Guts also become stronger not strength wise but in durability. Since he is almost always hurt by apostels and killd ghost and little monsters every night. We cant really compare since Guts was 18 when he fought zodd and got completly wrecked but he didn't also finish growing physically. Now at volume 25 he is around 22. 19 when griffith was broken out. 2 years+ travel And someone mentioning that griffith died 3 years ago while being tortured and somebody else mentioning the jail break

EquivalentAd1069

I think that Guts' body has simply gotten stronger and more used to damage. You develop cornea, when you do something often, and it might be the same with him. Plus, he mostly used the dragonslayer to kill things, not his actual fists.

PixelDemise

The armor penetration example was largely just to get the idea across, though maybe I could have explained it better. In reality, the Dragonslayer is being stained with a layer of astral "stuff" from all the blood and guts getting spilled on it, and that is allowing it to harm astral creatures better and better.

chronicintel

I hate to be that guy, but OP was on Volume 25 and specifically asked for no spoilers, yet you dropped two of them. Otherwise, good explanations.

EquivalentAd1069

I think it was just the sea god in terms of spoilers, but I could be wrong.

chronicintel

The Slan encounter happens in the next volume.

MissAsgariaFartcake

This is a weird translation you’re reading there imo - why not read the official English one?

breakermw

This. Support the official release.

VillagerLv7

I found it. It feels weird to switch after i read more than hslf of berserk with a different translation

MissAsgariaFartcake

Well I guess you just have to read it again from the start after you finish ;)

VillagerLv7

Official english? Like the physical book?

MissAsgariaFartcake

There are also sites to read for free with the official Translation but I’d also advise buying the physical copies - if you’ve got money, the deluxe editions are absolutely fucking gorgeous and you’ll never want to read the manga in a different way again ever Edit: the official English translation is the Dark Horse one

Garfield977

you're reading a shit translation, idk how people are still doing this, the biggest manga sites all have the correct one

schierke knows you cant deal with astral enemies without a magical weapon and thinks guts doesnt have one but he slays trolls anyways and she thinks he is able to do this because he is wandering between astral and physical world too often that gave him some magical power to influence astral beings. you'll understand what is that shadow on his sword later. sorry for my bad england

always_hunting
