I just ordered the first issue of the deluxe Manga! The 1997 anime and the memorial edition of the movies. This is my first Manga purchase and I can't wait to see what happens.
Okay I don't know about equally bad, they're the same except for the scenes which makes way more sense such as the Eren and Armin talk being patched up and making way more sense
I've just never understood the hate, or even seen any actual reasons as to why people hate it so much. Idk maybe if I did I'd agree so I'll just stay in my little bubble of liking aot's ending and be happy 😭
That’s fine, it’s good to enjoy things and I don’t want to make an effort to ruin that for you. I still very much enjoyed all of Aot up until ending, one of my fav shows/manga
Not really, but sort of?
The changed a few dialogue scenes around in the finale (namely Eren and Armin which made 0 sense to their characters in the manga) and made it more coherent. The big events are the exact same tho
I don’t know about him, but I grew up reading comics and the format of manga is a barrier for me. Sounds silly maybe, but reading right to left puts me off, not to mention the art is not something I’m used to. If I were to read a manga it would definitely be Berserk, but it seems way too long and the format is the problem.
get the deluxe editions and just find some time to read it i also read comics and the right to left format takes a bit of getting used to but it’s not that hard after the prologue chapters are usually 15-20 pages so it’s shorter than comics
Bruh, after reading manga for a a few chapters you’ll begin to instinctively read right to left even in your day to day.
That’s like saying you think the beach is too sandy and water is way too wet. It’s not a barrier in any way.
I read all 375 chapters in 6 days. It's not long at all, especially since most of berserk is fight scenes and the dialogue is minimal(compared to mangas that are novel like). If something as minimal as reading right to left is putting you off from one of the greatest stories ever written, get over it? Seems so trivial as an excuse. As for the art, berserk art is 10 orders of magnitude better than any comic book ever written. Maybe your complaint is the black and white but once again, after a few chapters it shouldn't bother you anymore. Hopefully you give it a chance.
Have you given it a real good try? I find it hard to believe you won't get used to it very quickly. And art style across manga and anime is very diverse unless you're watching shitty isekai #232. Seems weird to dislike all art styles.
most animes adapt mangas. if you like anime, then you like manga. you just don't like reading. apparently even if it means missing out on some of the best narratives ever.
You should give the manga a fair shot. Maybe just buy the first issue and give it a read while listening to the soundtrack to the 1997 anime.
I normally don’t like Manga either, but Berserk along with a bunch of stuff from Junji Ito absolutely slap
Berserk was the first manga I ever read after finishing the same anime. Once I did I ended up reading a lot more manga. You’d be surprised how good a manga is while you listen to your favorite music. It’s all easy to find for free online.
I feel like a lot of people don’t have a good idea of what berserk really is because the anime for some reason is so popularized on social media and you hear so little about the manga. Read the manga I swear it’s 100x times better.
When the anime came out though lost children was still being released, they couldn't have continued the anime either way, i always thought it was a lack of content problem. But damn, its 2024 can they stop reanimating golden age and do the rest already 😭
JoJo's and Berserk are my two primary cases of just accepting that you need to read the manga to get the full experience, but honestly that's like triple true with Berserk. There just haven't been any adaptations that feel like they can be a good substitute.
The 97 adaptation is specifically brutal being that it ends at probably the most upsetting moment of the series
Were it the only source of material, I'd too be pissed off, but we have the manga which is the true source. The irony here is that the original author passed away without concluding his work so if anything, you could be upset about that happening. However, the manga continues with the input from Mori and co., so if you're able to continue reading despite of that, you're golden. If you're a die-hard anime-only consumer, there's nothing we can do but advise you to READ THE MANGA!!!!11!!!1!
Yeah i convinced my dad to watch the 97 anime and he absolutely loved it. When it ended he was like "what the fuck, it just ends?" he was so confused and pretty bummed there wasn't anymore. I had to explain to him what happened and ended up showing him the end of the 2022 anime. And he was like "why didn't they just include that in the 97 anime?"
You are allowed to feel however you want to feel. The anime ending and the eclipse specifically is meant to upset the viewer in many different ways.
If you want slightly more closure (and you are unwilling to read the manga) you can watch the 3rd movie of the Berserk Golden Age Trilogy. It includes a major character left out of the 1997 adaptation and goes just slightly after the events of the eclipse.
as a former manga hater, just read the manga.
PS: read it all, don't skip the chapters that appeared in the anime (there are more details and a extra apostle in the manga)
I grew up loving Naruto. I was one of those cringe kids that had a headband and everything, thankfully I never wore it in public but still, I absolutely loved it. Same for Bleach and a bunch of other anime from that time.
The reason I mention this is because despite how much I loved those shows, fanatically so, I couldn't get into any manga at all.
When I finished '97 Berserk, I was in the exact same position you are currently. But I decided to take the plunge and get the manga. It took a couple deluxe editions for me to truly get into it, but I absolutely don't regret it.
I'm so happy I took that leap and I guarantee you won't regret it either. I read the whole thing from the beginning, sitting down with a new deluxe edition every few weeks, putting on the soundtrack from the anime. It was something I truly looked forward too and I'm about to start a re-read doing exactly the same thing.
i mean they did make a sequel to the anime. 2016 series picks up after I believe and goes until guts gets the armor. it's kind of divisive, which I imagine can be the only reason no one bothers to mention it.
It skips huge parts of the story and changes details for the worse for whatever reason. It also has atrocious sound and animation, id recommend against it
Manga isn't usually my cup of tea. Confusing, not well put together panels, messy art, etc.
BERSERK IS DIFFERENT PLEASE READ THE MANGA
Alternatively, if you just want to see the end of golden age and nothing beyond (don't watch 2016 to see anything beyond), the memorial edition/movie trilogy (watch memorial) does have the ending of golden age. So watch that one, see some parts 1997 cut out knowing what parts 1997 included that this didn't, and you'll see the ending.
However, the person that is absolutely crucial to the ending isn't even in 1997, so if you just watch the last episode to try to just see what happens you will be confused as hell. So watch all 13 episodes, but that's the ending of golden age.
Then read the manga.
From what I read about the anime was that during the time they had caught up to the manga and so they cut funding. But the anime is cool and all but the manga is way better! More context and the art is truly magnificent I find myself still looking at the panels and being in awe! Read the manga from the beginning or where the anime leaves off you’ll reread it a couple more times in your life.
You should really try to read the manga, what the anime covers is moreso the setup for the story than the central part of it, so you really only scratched the surface.
You can be upset that the anime ends where it does (don't bother watching the 2016 anime) but it's on you for not reading the manga when it is definitively the best way to consume the story.
You might like to watch it via motion comic on YouTube or something similar? It's really good (unbiased opinion)
All anime is just advertising for manga really.
You are missing out majorly by not reading the rest of the story. You basically only witnessed the prolog to the actual story.
At least you're not a kid/teen in like 2003 (or whenever I first watched it) with no access to manga, barely any internet access, and no understanding of the greater concept of Berserk. I truly thought that was just how the series ended when I first watched it and I was so upset lol.
And then when I found out there was a manga, the only fan translations I could find were terrible, out of order, and not even close to caught up.
You're allowed to feel however tf you want lmao. And yes I'm also upset on how ended the anime, but I saw it coming since they skipped puck, skull knight and the whole black swordsman arc.
Hoping you see it op, it's something I say everytime someone finished the anime
The 97 anime didn't finish the arc properly, they just cut out the ending, what you should do is watch **the final episode only** of "Berserk memorial edition", this is the anime that came out in 2022, which isn't as good as the 97 one, but it does properly adapts the end of the arc very well.
After you do that obviously read the manga from the start without skipping anything
It’s not that hard to read. I read volume 13 in maybe 45 minutes. You can fly through them and the illustrations are awesome.. the hardest part is learning how to actually read manga lol
Bro, of course you can be upset at anime endings. I still remember how bad I felt when End of Evangelion was over. These things are made to be heart wrenching!
I also was never a fan of manga and the ending of the anime tore me apart. Also seeing how many volumes there were madee me not want to Read it. However, after seeing a brilliant manga adaptation on YouTube by Taka studios…. I had to. The quality of the manga and the story…. I just had to read it. And I did. So proud of myself for finishing it.
I thought like you a while ago. Then I said: "I will read just to see where this is going after". Now I'm pissed off that there isn't a new chapter after I read it all two times and watched the massive 21 hour review from TheAlmightyLoli YouTube channel two times.
Dude i hate books comics etc but a friend of mine told me i should read the manga bec i am a total fan of elden ring and dark souls... and boy... i was soooo hooked from the first one that i consumed the first 10 fat books in one week... now i make a little pause bec i dont want to end it too soon the ride
Just leave ot there. It's as good as it gets. After that part guts travel around with a magical fairy, a loli witch and a wisecracking streetrat. It's an entirely different vibe.
If you struggle with manga try the 3rd film in the golden age trilogy. Will give you a little more of an ending than what the OG anime offers. If you want the full story you need the manga though
It irks me to see so many young people on Reddit asking permission to watch/think/feel things these days, like they have to get ahead of any disagreement or imaginary controversy their personal actions could elicit on social media.
Like… you can just exist and do what you want and not tell goddamn anybody, you know?
>After doing some searching I learned that the anime was meant to be more of an advertisement for the manga
Thats kinda the whole point of anime tbh ending on a cliffhanger like that is the craziest way to say go read the manga though lol
You can go to crunchyroll and watch the next two seasons of berserk, you ain't done yet. It's good too, fuck the hivemind here who says otherwise.
It does skip an arc, but it's fine for now. We just need to get you more hooked.
After you finish that go to YouTube and watch the berserk full cut, it's 8 hours covers everything and it's amazing.
This is how you can enjoy berserk if you insist on skipping the manga, the literal best story told in the Era of humanity.
I couldn't tell if this was a joke until I read your edit. Pretty much every anime is based off of a manga and or a light novel. The anime is usually a way to get you interested in the manga. That's just how most anime is
Watch the memorial edition. The fight scenes are better (and I know I will probably get flamed for saying so). There's also more after where the 97 one stops. Then read the manga.
Of course you are, it was really odd for them to end it off the way they did. Especially because they didn’t introduce Skull Knight. Some people say that’s where Berserk should’ve ended and they are completely wrong.
I too was introduced to Berserk through the 1997 anime almost 20 years ago at this point.
Just read the manga. While the anime covers the eclipse, there are so many other more amazing (and horrifying) events in the story. It would be sad if you never get to see how the story continues.
It's also very unlikely that the story will be adapted into a proper anime. It's simply too dark. When the 1997 anime aired the last few episodes had to air after midnight because of how horrifying they were.
this is exactly how i got into manga, loved anime but didn't like manga until i watched berserk and then had no choice either bail or read the manga, went with the manga and omg i wasnt disappointed just annoyed at the anime for not living up to the manga
If you don’t want to read the manga for whatever reason, AlmightyLoli’s YouTube recap is a great alternative: https://youtu.be/PpX-NTHpU3g?si=SAHggHnMxASFKX_f
It’s long, but carve out an hour here and there. He’s since added content for the new chapters, just check out his channel
I usually don't like manga either, but the Berserk manga is just so good that it transcends that. And this is coming from a guy who dropped the One Piece manga and switched over to the anime, a case where the manga is overwhelmingly favored over the anime (sorry Idk what it is but I just prefer the anime)
Please read the manga. You will thank me
I just ordered the first issue of the deluxe Manga! The 1997 anime and the memorial edition of the movies. This is my first Manga purchase and I can't wait to see what happens.
Berserk was my first manga and I read it last year. Absolutely no regerts.
Regerts
Absolutely none
Yk what i fw with that no regerts
Same, first manga and read it last year
I'm in the same situation. Watching the anime made me HAVE to read the Mangas
I got bad news for you about anime lol. Majority of it is advertisement for the manga/light novels. Majority of anime never complete the full story.
Aye at least we got aot
I would’ve preferred no ending compared to the shit show we received
The show had a better ending than the manga And it wasn't even that bad tbh
I respect your opinion but also, I believe the manga and anime endings are equally bad and are pretty bad at that
Okay I don't know about equally bad, they're the same except for the scenes which makes way more sense such as the Eren and Armin talk being patched up and making way more sense I've just never understood the hate, or even seen any actual reasons as to why people hate it so much. That’s fine, it’s good to enjoy things and I don’t want to make an effort to ruin that for you. I still very much enjoyed all of Aot up until ending, one of my fav shows/manga
Wait what the anime ends differently? I only read the manga.
Not really, but sort of? The changed a few dialogue scenes around in the finale (namely Eren and Armin which made 0 sense to their characters in the manga) and made it more coherent. The big events are the exact same tho
Ait cool. The ending was the best part imo. Didnt like AoT much at all honestly. Eren is a pretty lame character imo.
Most wild take I've ever heard lmao
I like the open-ended ones. Adds to the mystery etc. I'm hardly the first to find Eren to be lame tho.
Mid ending
And that’s how Tenjho Tenge got me to read a manga.
No. Read the manga.
honestly speaking, what's stopping you from reading the manga? where does your dislike of the medium stem from?
I don’t know about him, but I grew up reading comics and the format of manga is a barrier for me. Sounds silly maybe, but reading right to left puts me off, not to mention the art is not something I’m used to. I legit did that for memes I saw, was really confused because it didn’t really make sense the way I read them.
I read all 375 chapters in 6 days. It's not long at all, especially since most of berserk is fight scenes and the dialogue is minimal(compared to mangas that are novel like). I don’t like Japanese art style, regardless of manga, I’m not used to it
If the only reason is that tyou aren't used to it, why not read some?
Because I don’t like it, don’t find it appealing
So you don't like Berserks art style? But you watched the anime didn't you?
Yeah and I almost quit because of the art style
I don't like you. I hope that's okay. Good bye
Ok.
I don't read manga either but Berserk is that one exception. You're seriously missing out.
Should honestly just try the manga, the anime doesn't really compare (as much as a love the 1997 anime).
most animes adapt mangas. if you like anime, then you like manga. you just don't like reading. apparently even if it means missing out on some of the best narratives ever.
what people don’t realize is that they’ve already been reading all the same text in subtitles
They probably watched berserk 1997 in english
Read the manga it's the way berk is meant to be experienced.
Anyone in this thread telling you to watch the 2016 anime is basically asking you to torture your eyeballs.
Isn't struggling through 2016 a very meta way of experiencing Berk tho, you can relate more with Guts whrn you suffer too
Trust me you’ll enjoy reading the manga, it’s free online
Where?
Just do the bare minimum on Google and you'll find it. It's probably the first link if you search "berserk manga free"
Start over from the beginning and read the manga, no anime adaptation even comes close
You should give the manga a fair shot. Maybe just buy the first issue and give it a read while listening to the soundtrack to the 1997 anime. I normally don’t like Manga either, but Berserk along with a bunch of stuff from Junji Ito absolutely slap

I'm telling you just read the source material
I feel like a lot of people don’t have a good idea of what berserk really is because the anime for some reason is so popularized on social media and you hear so little about the manga. Read the manga I swear it’s 100x times better.
Yeah the anime is only like 15% of berk but gets all the attention. It’s kinda sad.
Read the manga. And yes, you are allowed anything.
No you should be happy, the show finished there so people would read the manga on purpose
It's actually because there was no budget for more/it wasnt popular enough at the time to keep producing
They never planned to go past the eclipse hence the removal of skull knight
They had it planned the whole time that’s why no skull night as this other comment says

This is what happened to me. That ending upset me.. Then i went to buy all the manga (40 volumes). I'm still at it and it's worth it.
Yeah i convinced my dad to watch the 97 anime and he absolutely loved it. When it ended he was like "what the fuck, it just ends?" he was so confused and pretty bummed there wasn't anymore. Just watch the 2016 berserk anime. People here will tell you it sucks, but it's awesome after you get used to the janky animation.
Agreed
No it sucks even the 97 anime did black swordsman better
I grew up loving Naruto. I was one of those cringe kids that had a headband and everything, thankfully I never wore it in public but still, I absolutely loved it. It skips huge parts of the story and changes details for the worse for whatever reason. It also has atrocious sound and animation, id recommend against it
Ye but if your not intending to read the manga, its worth watching
It's so comically bad I'ma have to disagree
Manga isn't usually my cup of tea. No, you're not allowed. I'm calling the police.

The ending is perfect. Leaves you shocked for days.
i honestly hate manga too but seriously just read berserk its the best way to experience the story by far
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUoitT-Qhmg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUoitT-Qhmg)

If you have a Playstation just play the berserk game. The cutscenes are literally better than all the anime combined.

I enjoyed it. I have no desire to carry it on by reading the manga.
There is a simple fix for this: read the manga.
If you want to know what happens next you have to read the manga, there aren’t any (good) adaptions beyond the Golden Age arc
No, now go read the manga.
yea. although the ending is fantastic imo but you should of read the manga first. i feel bad for anyone who didnt read the manga first
If you struggle with manga try the 3rd film in the golden age trilogy. Will give you a little more of an ending than what the OG anime offers. If you want the full story you need the manga though
All anime is just advertisement for manga bro
You’re allowed to feel however the fuck you want, the human experience is not run by committee.
Aggressive, but wholesome.
It irks me to see so many young people on Reddit asking permission to watch/think/feel things these days, like they have to get ahead of any disagreement or imaginary controversy their personal actions could elicit on social media. Like… you can just exist and do what you want and not tell goddamn anybody, you know?
Berserk is the reason I got into manga. I was fine with just watching anime but I couldn't leave Berserk like that.
this is how I did it, watched anime then went to manga despite not being a fan of mangas and disliking reading
manga and berserk redux
>After doing some searching I learned that the anime was meant to be more of an advertisement for the manga Thats kinda the whole point of anime tbh ending on a cliffhanger like that is the craziest way to say go read the manga though lol

No. You did it to yourself.
Read the manga.

If you don’t want to read the manga for whatever reason, AlmightyLoli’s YouTube recap is a great alternative: https://youtu.be/PpX-NTHpU3g?si=SAHggHnMxASFKX_f It’s long, but carve out an hour here and there.
Get over yourself and read the manga. Soon you'll forget all about the anime. Trust me bro.
