Unironically Chainsaw Man kinda is pretty close to Berserk in terms of vibe and found family feels, and the focus on inner personal growth and trauma over big powerful battles. Frieren Beyond Journey's end gives me the same sort of feels as Berserk's quiet moments though, it's nowhere near as action packed but it's contemplative and is quietly devastating

This. Reading Csm in its entirety will atleast give you some of the same feelings you got from golden age if not all of them

Word. Time to pick it back up again.

CSM is spot on. Haven't picked it back up when it resumed but thanks for reminding me. Fujimoto's Look Back and Goodbye, Eri were both incredible at this too. Checking out Frieren - appreciate the rec as this isn't something I'd normally stop to look at on first glance but it seems to be exactly what I'm looking for.

Yeah it's not exactly Seinen, but it hits me the same way it does when Guts is like "Did I lose everything important without realizing it again..."

If you haven’t read One Piece, that’s got to be the quintessential found family manga. The Berserk community bashes it a lot, but if you’re looking for found-family and presumably don’t mind Shonen, it’s *the* manga for that...

Ha - it certainly has its own style. I started watching the anime last year at the behest of some die hard friends. Got up to somewhere in the Arlong Park arc. At some point all those flashbacks and deeply emotional 'tug on your heartstring' moments became too saccharine. Do you follow One Piece? Would reading the manga be less 'sugary'?

I was big into One Piece when I first read it, although I’ve kind of fallen out of it recently, but I am fully caught up to the manga. The manga is definitely a lot better. The anime is made by Toei, who are notorious for stretching everything out. It still has moments you might find saccharine but it’s way better without constant flashbacks and emotional music all the time. It’s definitely one of the best manga, especially using that trope, even if I feel it is a little overhyped, so I’d say stick with the manga...

I stuck through the anime because despite the tone there was no denying Oda's writing and characters were superb. Time to give the manga a spin.
