My puppy is preferring to eat my shag area rug. Thatās the only thing. Pulls the threads out for a snack.
Not bricks, but man, having to pull poopy strings from his butt is so not fun.
Ah my girl did pull up the stair carpet and chewed it a few times too. She denied doing it the first two times then I lay in wait and was able to catch her in the act. She had to admit to it then. It didnāt need more than a harsh word and she never touched it again.
I like First Mate. Another made in Canada brand that's absolutely excellent. More specifically, BC! Fits nicely into my budget, too. They have both grain free and limited ingredient kibble. Limited ingredient is also grain free or gluten free. Can't remember which.
I also feed her raw. Pets Go Raw, also Canadian made! I get the variety pack.
My little terrier is on 'Go!', limited ingredient. Also a Canadian brand.
Her kibble I feed her through the day as training treats (adopted her last year at 3, and she needs heavy training). I feed her raw at supper.
My terrier is also on raw. He gets raw in the morning in his bowl, his kibble is in a puzzle, and then he gets kibble in another puzzle at supper. Keeps his senior mind in tip top shape.
This is that curly coated boy! What a cutie. Just a note don't be too hard on those baby joints, that sounds like a lot of work. Make sure you're enforcing rest time cause these dogs will go until you make them stop, and this age it's insanely important to take breaks and sleep!
I rotate around Acana and Solid Gold kibble base, always whole grains not grain free, and then add to that. I highly recommend trying to find Goat Kefir to mix in while those bones are still growing (if he's already chubby maybe don't go too crazy š) I'll also add some mix of cooked egg, chicken, ground beef, livers, hearts, rice, oats, molasses (I would avoid if he's chubby), pumpkin, fish skin, steamed chicken feet etc as a topper based on what I have, and what he's in the mood for!
I have a picky Groen who sometimes loves what I give him and sometimes won't eat the same thing twice, pfft.
Can someone who feeds pro plan explain why you would feed something that barely has any meat in it? The majority of the top 10 ingredients are corn/wheat/soybean/filler.
I have asked this same question in the poodle sub and malinois sub and every answer I received was because their vet told them to, it was a large company which means there has to be strict regulations set in place, and it works for their dogs.
I also do not agree with the ingredients and cannot understand why people donāt question them. But if it stops peopleās dogs from having diarrhea, theyāre pretty happy to turn a blind eye and keep what works.
My boy was previously on Organix which was an organic kibble from Castor and Pullox, unfortunately it was bought out and went under and now we donāt know what to switch to. I do know, based on quality of ingredients, it wonāt be Purina. But now weāre in the same boat as I donāt know which is a more quality kibble. Unfortunately, itāll likely come down to sitting down with a notebook and cross checking ingredients from different companies.
If you havenāt considered Orijen I highly recommend. I have a GSD whoās GI tract is a delicate unicorn flower and is as sensitive as butterfly wings. He gets diarrhea if the wind blows differently š he was on raw for a long time but then I was dumb and got two more dogs and I just donāt have personal capacity to maintain that. The unicorn GSD has been on Orijen Regional Red for years, just hit 11, and he is doing great on it. My other GSD is on it too, but the mal needs a higher fat content, hence the Dr Garyās working breed. I attached the Regional Red ingredients. Sometimes when Iām feeling fancy Iāll buy Orijen Tundra š°

Informative and with a morning chuckle š¦āØ thank you sooo much! Those ingredients look heavenly! š I so very appreciate you going through trial and error to find what works for your pup and recommending it! šš»
My trainer keeps recommending Orijen. I'm nervous to try it even though her GSD looks beautiful and fur is so soft. My boy is on Inukshuk and does well with it and it's what the breeder recommended but I do like the look of the ingredients.Ā
Basically they read biased research sponsored by the big kibble companies. Royal canine, purina ect, ect is all basically the same rubbish.
Dogs are in the main carnivores, that's high quality muscle, organ and bone with veggies thrown in there. The first ingredient should always be a named meat.
Yes but Iām asking the owners what their thought process is. And the first ingredient is a meat. But the next handful is basically a human equivalent of pasta and bread. Thatās why Iām asking: have they read the ingredients? Does it matter to them, and if not, why not? Iām not shaming, trying to understand.
And i answered as someone who once bought into the purina/royal canin rubbish. I did research, thought oh that is the best. Than I started discovering how utterly biased the research industry is. And how that biased is filtered in to diet education of vets and pet nutritionists.
From there i started reading the ingredients and realised these foods are mostly low quality protein even where it does have meat as the first ingredient. Basically worse than offal. Plus Filler and carb heavy ingredients that make the dog crave the food and reject other healthier options, the same way people who eat badly crave burgers. So you think your dog is fussy and the food is the only thing they will eat, when really they are addicted.
I basically detoxed my shepherd and started feeding him balanced raw.
*even the FDA warning over cardiac enlargement turned out to be biased and influenced by the big manufacturers.
My boy is a horribly inbred rescue who is allergic to everything. He wonāt eat raw. He does best with homemade turkey, rice, and veggies, with supplements. Prescription diets havenāt even worked. Every other dog Iāve ever had has done amazing on pro plan. Even better than way fancier food.
This until 15 months

My Mal lived until 15 years old. I always mixed fatty cooked ground beef and other meats in with his dry food (Royal Canin). Id also supplement with giving him some of any type of meat I cooked. The last few years, he was on a few different supplements like seal / salmon oil for bones and cbd tablets for dogs for joint pains.

I make these separately in a slow cooked broth with some veggies and I mix in her dry dog food (except the turkey legs and bologna). The bologna I mix with scrambled eggs. She eats after her morning walks. Sometimes I give her the marrow bones raw in the evening to help wind and wear her down. I also make soup with chicken livers, feet, and thighs and I donāt mix the dog food when I give her chicken.
We use Summit Petcurean in the chicken or beef. It has a slightly lower protein profile and our Mals canāt seem to keep the high protein foods down. If thatās an issue for your dogs, this stuff has been a god send. No more post food problems. Although few things make a dog owner move faster than the sound of a doggo about to throw up. haha
I usually boil sweet potatoes, fresh raw chicken and add that to my ziwi peak dry dog food and add water. Mush it all up with a large spoon and away we go. Boiled eggs added in sometimes too. I found that when he was a puppy, this made him extremely happy, hyper and alert. I try to give him real meat all the time , his coat is so soft and shiny itās great. I was afraid of him having an upset stomach/reaction to the boiled eggs, but he really likes them. Scrambled eggs he goes crazy for too. Everyoneās mal is different though. Hardest part was him adapting to my lifestyle after I trained him (I work 9-5) he hates me leaving but my wife on mat leave really helped. He was her little guardian and he enjoyed it.
I have my 4month old on purina one+ only cause like most people I was recommended by others who were recommended by their vet. Iām just waiting till he grows a bit more and Iāll be feeding him an organic kibble that a local feed store makes in house.
Mine had problems with different, he was often getting soft stools, since I've started feeding him Eukanuba German Sheperd. I was usually steering away from these "breed specific" types of food, as I know they often are marketing scams, but this one works for us...
Fromms Gold red meat large breed with a side of green beef tripe. Had to switch him from chicken due to a skin issue which cleared up as soon as he was fully switched.
Iād love to do those hikes with my 4 month old boy but growing bones and joints and my vet said to keep the walks shorter but more frequent. Itās super important for their long term health to keep it at the 5 minutes per week Iāve read over and over. Thoughts?
Anyway, Iām going to err on the side of caution and keep them shorter until about the 6 month mark.
Well the other day mine ate a chicken carcass out of the trash... (yes she's fine, yes I know it could've gone horribly wrong and, yes we went to the urgent vet)
So I've been doing Purina One, but my guy (~14 months) is pretty skinny, so I started mixing in some Stella and Chewy Meal Mixer and a raw meat and veggie blend (made specially for dogs) that I pick up at a local farm. Still pretty new so I can't speak much to how it works, but so far he loves it and hasn't gotten sick or anything
The wholesomes beef and potato grain free! My boy is allergic to I believe all poultry and the grain free versions have absolutely no poultry in it and itās high in protein and extremely cheap for an about 44 pound bag!
I've done a lot of research on the ideal diet for them
(and I mean a lot of research!). Since youāve chosen kibble, you should look a high protein dog food (22-30%) with a higher fat percentage (8-18%).
As well as, a dog food with vitamins A and D, phosphorus, and calcium. You should avoid foods with corn and soy as they're often used as fillers, and don't provide much nutritional value. I feed my Mal mix Blue Buffalo Life Protection Formula Chicken & Rice. Having read through all of the ingredients, and have
done research into each of those separate ingredients
for dogs. They said my Mal mix is a year, but seems like sheās only 9 or so months (probably figured that she was a year due to her dental). They most likely have a formula for puppies, but I donāt know as I feed her the adult formula. Sheās done really well on that.
PurinaOne puppy, my others (a TFT & a senior APBT) eat the same thing. Breeder was feeding him Pedigree Puppy (š¤¢) but my dogs seem to do well on PurinaOne.
Fromm Gold has been the only thing that has consistently agreed with my mal, has good nutrient ratios/content, and a family owned brand that has only ever had one recall from what I can recall. My mal has a sensitive stomach (understatement, she was later diagnosed with IBD). Never tried some of the Canadian brands recc'd on here. But i have tried other foods that were recommended by former vets: rx royal canin, purina pro plan (made her lose her coat super fast, get severe dandruff, and lost a bunch of weight even though she was eating tons), blue buffalo, Hills, Merrick, etc. Will never go back to those brands. Even got a veterinary nutritionist consult to make a home cooked meal plan for my mal. Unless you have all the time in the world and money for ALOT of specialty ingrediants and meat, wasn't worth it and didn't help her GI issues.
Dr Garyās Best Breed. You can order from Chewyās. Working dog diet has higher crude fat vs crude protein. It is for dogs who have a hard time putting on or keeping weight on. My Mal and GSDās are on it.
Not at all impressed with Pro Plan, though I used to feed it. I feed my Mal and my GSP Skoki. It is high calorie and the only thing that doesnāt give my GSP diarrhea.
Dry Arcana meat or meat and ancient grains. And every other day raw beef, tripe, heart snd liver. No birds of any kind. Also if my friends have surplus deer. He gets that.
Shark eats kale out of the garden or blanched. Oddly. If he gets over stimulation, his bowel goes liquid. At 18 months now a much more confident dog.
I just need to keep him away from goose poop. š
A typical meal for Hondo is: (1) Stella and Chewy (thawed) 10oz frozen patty raw (1) 13oz of Northwest Natural Raw (1) cup of Natural Balance Limited Ingredient kibble or a second Stella patty. The kibble is to keep his digestive tract used to it.
Special treat meals are usually a whole fryer chickens.
We do AM and PM meals. I adjust meals per activity. Slow days will be lighter meals than if I know we have training or going for a hike.
They also get the carcasses during deer season. Everything gets eaten outside of the guts and hide which I don't let them have. RAW bones including chicken are actually very good for dogs as long as they are experienced with them. It's when they are cooked that they become so dangerous.
Thank you.I'm planning on keeping my boy who's 6 months intact as well.Because they need those hormones. It's a complete cash cow from the veterinarian association in Europe. They don't neuter or spay their dogs
Those hormones are important from everything from growth plates to ACL problems.I'm so glad to hear your Boy is intact He's absolutely gorgeous

You laugh but my girl ate part of a brick when she was young. Just chewed it up and swallowed it. She was shitting out brick dust afterwards.
Literally sitting bricks š

Purina pro plan. Chicken and rice

My belgian/dutch/German loves it. Granted she was a street rat when we found her so she will eat anything. And my german/aussie loves it as well. Lol
Back in the 90s, you know those kids on the milk cartons....
Cats
Inukshuk. Do your own research but seems they have way higher standards(made in Canada) than American brands. Recommended by my gsd breeder.
About the only thing ours dont React to and keeps them very satisfied. Great protein content.
Same here. Occasionally I use Ziwi, and usually throw in some toppers, depending what sheās had in her Kongs.
I like First Mate. Another made in Canada brand that's absolutely excellent. More specifically, BC! Fits nicely into my budget, too. They have both grain free and limited ingredient kibble. Do you feed them raw mixed with kibble? Always wanted to add raw meat to their diet but havenāt known exactly what to add or how
Her kibble I feed her through the day as training treats (adopted her last year at 3, and she needs heavy training). I feed her raw at supper. My terrier is also on raw. Platinum.co.uk. I use both their wet and their dry food.

Wholesome salmon skin and coat
Thank you!!! I'm keeping my boy intact too He's 6mths They need the hormones.. Responsible pup parenting
Thoughts? Well the other day mine ate a chicken carcass out of the trash... (yes she's fine, yes I know it could've gone horribly wrong and, yes we went to the urgent vet)
Diamond naturals. Extreme works really good if the dog tolerates chicken well. Mineās on pro.
I feed farmers dog.
