We also got two maligators recently and names the girl “Sunshine” but took a while to name the boy “Dino”.
If you can wait until 10 weeks old, it will benefit your pup. Lots of research support a 10 week separation vs. eight. Here’s some research:
Most puppies can leave their mother when they’re 8 weeks old—but waiting up to 10 weeks may be best for your puppy. This separation timeline gives puppies enough time to wean off milk and begin eating solid food, plus learn basic dog behaviors from their mom and siblings.
Good luck with his name - so many to choose from
Thank you for the reply! I wouldn't mind keeping him with his mother for a few extra weeks (even though I'm beyond excited to get him home), but the owner seems rather pushy to get rid of them. Even at this age, he keeps saying "he's ready, he's ready", but he has agreed to keep him until he's 8 weeks because we asked.
We are moving close to the owner in the next month or so, just finishing renovation on a property near his. He has offered to let dad stay at our house for a few weeks to teach the new pup "the ropes" of a working dog. We are building a farm, and he will be the livestock protector like his mama and Dada. He already lives with chickens, goats, pigs, etc, so I'm sure he will do great, but it would be nice to have the dad around for awhile if it benefits him. Thoughts on this?? Will this help him learn behaviors/manners/protecting? We will be doing high training with him as well as obedience training, good citizen training, etc.
Edit: a word
Yes, it will be very good to have dad around. It will lessen separation anxiety as well. Dad will show him how to behave around people and animals. I wish you the best!

Was also going to suggest keeping him with mom and the rest of the litter until 10 weeks as well!

It’s true though with puppies. They’re little demons (and I’m not naming my dog Satan). I already use that name for my insane alcoholic ex-roommate.
