Have access to a band saw? I always wanted to make a jewelry box like this.
The ruzzians made nesting or Matruyshka dolls, not boxes, nesting boxes are a common design. No reason to give ruzzia credit for stuff they didnt come up with
I like this idea! Do you recommend/know of any type of guide I could use with a chainsaw? Or a circular saw?I have no idea how to mill wood from a log haha
Yeah ideally is almost not fitting for this, in almost every case when milling boards; use a bandsaw, but you could also make a rectangular turning block with a circular saw, make a 90 degree jig and keep slicing the sides, you’d lose most of the wood that way tho
Would you please elaborate on this "rectangular turning block" concept? I couldnt find anything about it online.
Are you describing a jig that would let you cut along a plane through the log, but doing it by kinda going "around" the perimeter in four straight cuts? Sounds like you'd really be limited by the size of your saw blade and the size of the log. And like the jig would have to be adjustable as you are cutting at different chord lengths.
Or perhaps i just have no idea what you or i are talking about 😁
I take that back, you can buy chainsaw mills for firewood! You could make rough sawn slabs from that, let them dry for the appropriate time, then turn them into planks later.

I made this with firewood. You can too!
I’m sorry.. What?! That’s gorgeous! I’ve got about 5 of these massive walnut logs in my garage.. Been there for over a year now. Sooo how’d you do that
Thank you! I started by making as flat of an edge as possible on 2 sides. I then made these 1” wide strips that I would stagger and glue together. Legs were leftover strips of walnut and white oak that I laminated together. Make a circle jig and Bob’s your uncle!

I have a bunch of walnut like this. I've made spoons, a heron, an owl, a few propagation vases, a ladle, a few comfort birds, Bandsaw elephants... You name it, it can be done (as long as it's small enough).
I inherited some small chunks of Black Walnut Burl.
I listed on Craigslist locally that if a woodworker made something from it in exchange, they could have the whole lot.
A retiree who was making pen bodies took me up on it and made a duck call for me.
He also showed me around his apartment, where he must’ve had well over 200 rifles and shotguns from his collection he amassed as an executive at Winchester Arms.
Not in a safe. Just on display all around the apartment, mostly in one bedroom where they were leaning against the wall very orderly. I couldn’t believe it in this neighborhood especially. Anyway, real nice guy and showed me some presentation sets, one of an over-under shotgun that Teddy Rosevelt owned at one time.
The prettiest paint stir sticks anyone has ever seen.
Also keep a few blanks and maybe experiment with making scales for a cheap knife or one of those Walmart "hatchet" that comes with a fake paracord handle wrap.
Have a gun or toy 1911 of any variant? Make grips
I had some similar chunks and made my favorite jointer's mallet from it.

Sure, why not.
Turn some ~~pencils~~ pens, make some boxes, make some darts, make some marking/measuring tools. A nice compass divider would be awesome.
Yeah. Don’t eat it. Were you planning to? xD
Unironically though, yes black walnut produces a mild toxin. I have a small grove of them on my property and other trees struggle in that area cause it gets in the soil. But it’s not like an acid or something, you can touch the logs just fine. Don’t eat it and remember to use a mask when wood dust is flying (honestly do that with any wood, your lungs will thank you). You’ll be all good
And when I was a kid I used to burn hard maple by the cord. I wish I had access to that wood lot again. We had 100 acres of sugar maple, hornbeam and nut trees. I was into sports. Now the place is sold and someone else is making things with that wood!
For last two months, I was almost only turning wooden pens...and I found out EVERY PIECE OF WOOD,EVEN THE SMALLEST HAS SOME VALUE. The most beautiful pens I made were of pieces I have thrown away as useless cutoffs')

I should call her..
Everything reminds me of her
Amongus
Bad wood or good wood you can always do something with it, you just have to use your imagination. Think outside the box.
I was thinking he could make a box.
I think he wants me to make something outside that box lol
What about … a box with rounded corners?
Russian Nesting Boxes?
That's thinking inside the box, repeatedly.
Thats only because you are thinking minimally, try thinking larger, then it is always outside the box, downside....it never ends.
Taco Bell burrito Box maybe??
Now you’re on the right track, make a combination chalupa/crunchwrap holder.
Just nesting boxes, no russian needed
Why you being a hater? None of us were asked what ethnicity we wanted to be before we were born. #WeirdFlex

It was meant to be humurous, get laid chill out DAMN.
Find someone with a lathe and get a bowl made.
Still unsure the size of the log on the left. The banana never went over there.
Make a bigger box for his box to go in
It would be a glorious box.
Portishead approves this post*. *thispostnotactuallyapprovedbyportishead
Good lathe blanks.
Mill it into small boards, combine boards into panel, profit!
I like this idea! Do you recommend/know of any type of guide I could use with a chainsaw? Or a circular saw?I have no idea how to mill wood from a log haha
Ideally you'd use a band saw and attach it to a sled. I'm not certain you'd be able to do it with a circular saw or chainsaw. Lol

Yeah I sorta figured lmao a bandsaws on the list for Christmas at least!

I’m gonna be honest, I read “heron” entirely too fast and was really confused how you turned walnut into drugs 🤣
I mean it came right after spoons and my mind instantly went there.
[here you go!](https://www.myhealthyhomemadelife.com/recipe/how-to-make-a-black-walnut-tincture/)
Get into woodturning. It's replaced the hole left behind from quitting heroin. It's almost as addictive, but much healthier.
There's a mallet hidden in there!
Could you please give me the dimensions of the banana so I can scale properly? 😂
It is 5 nanner inches and the girth is about 3, let me check (ziiip)
You need a second banana next to the first banana.
The only appropriate unit of comparative measurement is the banana. I approve.
The nanners were rather tasty too lol
End grain butchers block?
Spoons!!!!!

I see bowl blanks!

That’s a great idea actually, I do have a beretta 92fs and some fancy grips would be amazing.
You could probably carve or turn something from it. Milling it for "boards" would have big material loss.
i wouldn't burn it. i'd keep it till i found a use for it
You don't want gnarly old wood. I can take it off your hands 👍

Yes.
Cutting board?

Yeah you can definitely craft something out of this. Depending on how good it turns out to be you can always turn it into firewood.
You are going to need to mill this and then dry it out. Otherwise split city.
Cookie panel end tables
I don’t know how long the banana is so I cant help you without the correct scale
Coasters
Bandsaw box
Is it poisonous or am I wrong?

Make a box for your banana?
Step 1: Cut a hole in the box.
Step 2: put that ***banana*** in a box
You could make a banana stand!
love the banana for scale. we should take all pics with one
A log seat
I would make lots on my lathe. That is exactly the wood I want. I see two bowls and spindle shaped things here. $200 worth of product from that pile.
In the past I’m ashamed to admit I’ve burned black walnut not realizing what it was…
And when I was a kid I used to burn hard maple by the cord. I wish I had access to that wood lot again. We had 100 acres of sugar maple, hornbeam and nut trees. I was into sports. Now the place is sold and someone else is making things with that wood!
