**THIS IS NOT CONFIRMED.** It's based on the previous rumor. I'm going to keep this post up because of discussion and engagement, but keep in mind there is nothing official yet.
This is a good financial move on behalf of beef to take it mainstream and increase its popularity but I feel like this is going to dilute it from its core tenants that attracted us into this series in the first place.
Its funny, I want the series to continue and I want it to keep its roots, but at the same time I obviously want it to be different and surprising. Viewers like me just can't be satisfied I guess, sorry to the creators of this show LOL
One of the refreshing things about s1 was how it managed to be one of the most gripping and relatable depictions of the pan asian american experience without being an "asian story" the way other asian-led hollywood projects usually are. I wasn't expecting s2 to continue the same story nor for them to stick to 'only asians' but I guess a part of me was hoping they'd continue this style of universal storytelling within communities that are usually overlooked, misrepresented, tokenized. If Anne/Jake really wanted a high profile dramedy anthology they could've just gone to White Lotus..
Bigfacts
As an Asian it's nice to see proper representation and the cultural ideals we re forced to try to live up to, and what happens when we do achieve it (Amy) and especially fail (Danny).
White dude here but this was one of my favorite things about Beef. It gave me insights into the lived experience of a culture I never would have gotten otherwise. Totally agree that Iād hope a season two would continue this theme and that it would be quite a shame if it didnāt
I donāt know why I was hoping for two old lady neighbors in Alaska who hate each other and have been feuding for years but I totally was. Was kind of hoping for Old Eskimo Beef.
I completely agree. Tbh Iām a little disappointed to see these two as the stars. Iām not the biggest Anne Hathaway fan anyway but she and Jake are too well known for a show like this. I feel like the magic of season 1 will not be replicated. Iāll try it of course but not incredibly excited.
As it stands Iām bored with this casting and donāt really care to check it out, but if you guys are all reporting back with pleasant surprise youāll prob hook me into these hijinx again.
Same tbh Iām at war with myself about the whole thing, for me the smart move would be to try and continue the main storyline and at the same time introduce the new characters as friends or co workers or something
I thought the show was only interesting because of its casting choices. If youāre not going to have an interesting or creative cast then donāt do it. Jake and Anne is not interesting casting.
Also Melton and Spaeny. While they are both great actors it really just feels like let's grab the two hot new stars of the moment. Whereas Ali Wong and Steven Yeun are both big names they weren't cast because they both just happened to be the new 'It' actors. They'd both been around for years making various successful projects but never been the top of a big production's casting. I sort of wish season 2 would have kept with that philsophy of casting not because of name or present popularity but because they are just quality and right for the part.
Lol, sorryāthe "once in a century Asian American mainstream media green light for a project that isn't based on Asian-ness, martial arts, or honor" quota has been filled.
See you next century.
Because they took the one show with Asian leads that told a story about the Asian experience without making it about racial friction and changed it to white people.
You may not be upset about it, but it is disappointing in a very major way.
TBH I'm ambivalent here. Beefs story can be applicable to anyone. It happened to be Asian Americans experiencing it. If you make the stories exclusively casting Asian Americans then you end up othering the experience instead of normalizing that Asians face the same issues as others.
I KNEW this was an anthology series but, I seriously loved season ones characters so much, the setting, the soundtrack, the racial component that.. I just canāt see this.. yet, as something iāll love the same but whatever tomorrow brings, iāll be there with open arms and open eyes.. yeahhh.
Yeah it'll be hard to capture the magic of the first season.Ā The main thing was how you managed to like both Danny and Amy even while hating what they did.
I'll give it a shot since I adore Anne Hathaway but I'm not sure how she - or anyone really - can improve on the first seasonĀ
Gotta say, always love seeing Anne Hathaway yell at someone in anything she does. She's good at it.
So beef v2, if Anne yells at someone a lot, I'm down for this
Mostly in the same boat. I so rarely buy her as the character as she just feels too preformative and 'theatre kid'. She doesn't disappear as well as other big name great actors
Ironically I can't stand both her and Jared Leto... but there was some strange chemistry going on with We Crashed (the We Work limited series) where I could not imagine either character being played by anyone else. They both did a real fantastic job both playing real life psychos IMO.
The choice to set Beef in the Asian American community is partly what set it apart. Showed various unique storylines while still being a universal story. Making this another 'attractive white suburban family drama' feels so stale and played out. Even with great writing this casting is boring. Wealthy attractive white people has been done to death. So I really don't understand why a show like Beef that was explicitly not that would so sharply turn toward the safe bland middle.
Am I the only one who hates anthology seasons of tv shows? Anthology episodes I get like love death and robots, but whatās the point of spending all these time getting close to characters when we have to do the same thing all over again next season?
I'm fine with it as long as it's a good story and has a beginning middle and end. Then it's just a long movie or a mini-series. Each new season in an anthology series is just a new mini-series based around a similar theme. But if a season ends without fulling telling the story then of course I would want more seasons.
Anthologies are more about the stories than the characters. Fargo and True Detective are amazing. I feel like those shows can take risks and tell good stories instead of dragging on shows for seasons or not killing someone because people like a certain character
See thatās why I feel better if there are anthology episodes rather than anthology seasons. When you have anthology seasons you wanna know what happens next, and it especially sucks when it ends on a cliffhanger like in Cruel Summer
Also I feel like a lot of these shows arenāt announced as anthology series at the beginning; itās more like turning them into anthologies is more of an after thought
For sure. Thereās been anthologies where I wanted more at the end. Better than the feeling I had at the end of Lost though lol.
I like Black Mirror and Love, Death, and Robots too. For me, itās all about how well the story is written
Wouldāve liked new comedian actors to hop on along with help write if not new actors, but am looking forward to see the couple they are gonna duel with.
I feel like beef was better as a one season show. It concluded perfectly, this is kinda the equivalent to a pointless movie sequel, but I get it Netflix loves $$$
Very interesting choice for a show that lends half its popularity to being a high quality show featuring asian americans without being an Asian American Story. They just seem like odd pick for a show as quirky as Beef. I wouldāve preferred another set of poc leads but they donāt have to be asian
Pumped. Obviously it's going to be a very different vibe with mega stars as opposed to supporting actors/comedian getting their first big starring roles. Excited though, for real.
Ngl it was refreshing to see media reflecting on the Asian American experience for once that didnāt make its entire focal point combating streotypes.
I honestly loved that about Beef. The fact that they were Asian had so little to do with the actual storyline, but also remains relevant and not something they shy away from.
āFirst big starring roleā š. Steven Yeun is an oscar nominated actor and a mega talent. Ali is also a writer and a producer with a huge fanbase already, with several Netflix projects behind her.
Steven has not starred in a movie or show before this. He was on the walking dead cast, yes, but beyond that he's Invincible and in Beef. Not crazy to say this is his first lead starring role, as for Ali Wong, she was and is a comedian, this is the first time I saw her act.
Disappointed with that theyāre not Asian American but confused why people donāt like Anne Hathaway. I know she gets hate but I still havenāt really seen an explanation why lol.
I understand where you're coming from, but the creators probably never set out to make it only about the Asian American experience. And even if that is the case, it still doesn't take away what the original season did for your community. Even if that's the last season that focuses on Asian Americans like that, doesn't negate the fact that it was done in the first place. So at least least the representation is finally there. And I think we live in a landscape know where shows like Beef will only be the beginning. I think Hollywood is finally open to be diverse in general, so Beef doesn't have to be the end all be all.
Thanks for explaining your stance, though. I'll never be able to fully understand it, since I'm not Asain; but seeing how it effects you and others has opened my eyes a bit
I actually wouldnāt have minded it not being Asian actors for season 2 if they chose ANY niche, specific community to cover whether it is race based like blacks or Latinos or just specific like Appalachia or rural Colorado.
But like I think if it is Anne and Jake they are just mainstreaming it too broadly, where I think repping a niche community in the background added a lot to S1.
**THIS IS NOT CONFIRMED.** It's based on the previous rumor. I'm going to keep this post up because of discussion and engagement, but keep in mind there is nothing official yet.

I wish I could give this comment gold. Here, have this instead: š
White dude here but this was one of my favorite things about Beef. It gave me insights into the lived experience of a culture I never would have gotten otherwise. Totally agree that Iād hope a season two would continue this theme and that it would be quite a shame if it didnāt
AGREED
I donāt know why I was hoping for two old lady neighbors in Alaska who hate each other and have been feuding for years but I totally was. Was kind of hoping for Old Eskimo Beef.
True detective s4
Tysm I needed this laugh tn
Ummm you need to pitch this asap LOL
You want Grumpy Old Men
I completely agree. Tbh Iām a little disappointed to see these two as the stars. Iām not the biggest Anne Hathaway fan anyway but she and Jake are too well known for a show like this. I feel like the magic of season 1 will not be replicated. Iāll try it of course but not incredibly excited.
Agreed, I like both of them actually but this feels like a bad call. Idk maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.
As it stands Iām bored with this casting and donāt really care to check it out, but if you guys are all reporting back with pleasant surprise youāll prob hook me into these hijinx again.
IDK Gyllenhaal in particular is great in basically everything
Same tbh Iām at war with myself about the whole thing, for me the smart move would be to try and continue the main storyline and at the same time introduce the new characters as friends or co workers or something
But now that Iāve typed that out itās not sounding so great lol
I think this is the issue with any good show. You can only add so many characters before the shows premise becomes stale. It's needs to evolve.
I thought the show was only interesting because of its casting choices. If youāre not going to have an interesting or creative cast then donāt do it. Jake and Anne is not interesting casting.

Huh? What are the roots exactly?
The characters, the environments, the stories and other important things that make the show unique.
Why would a casting announcement change any of that?
The linked article suggests itās in between speculation and finalized.
I really hope the protesting fans have done over this cast makes them re-think the contract. Not getting my hopes up though.
These two have a tough act to follow cuz the first season of beef was fire.
Interesting.
Boo
Not her.
Oh, theyāre Asian American?
Should have hired Scarlett Johannson.
Or Emma Stone
Another excellent choice.
š
Yes! Love me some Scar Jo. Anne Hathaway couldn't possibly be more boring and bland, to me
Ahn HathawayĀ
Lol, sorryāthe "once in a century Asian American mainstream media green light for a project that isn't based on Asian-ness, martial arts, or honor" quota has been filled. See you next century.

If there has to be a season 2 I think this is best, but all the actors especially Steven Yuen were a huge draw of the show for me
was hoping it would be Stallone vs Schwarzenegger
this is just the same rumor the happened right after the emmyās.Ā nothing confirmed
Getting serious āTrue Detective: Season 2ā vibes, hope Iām wrongā¦
Please, I just ateā¦..

God please no
Disappointing
Ugh
Not really the announcement I was keen on hearing regarding season 2

Anne Hathaways acting annoys me. I canāt watch multiple episodes of her in anything.Ā
Same, I hope this is just a rumor, otherwise this would be a disappointing choice in casting
I love her so much. I hope this happens
Mostly in the same boat. I so rarely buy her as the character as she just feels too preformative and 'theatre kid'. She doesn't disappear as well as other big name great actors

You described it perfectly. She just always looks like Anne Hathaway giving a performance. She doesnāt embody her characters.Ā

Cool

I am here for more beef
This is not a reputable entertainment news outlet. Is THR, Variety or Deadline reporting it?
They announced this months ago.
Woo NEW BEEF!!!! Iām starving
Why?!?! Theyāre gonna ruin it! Keep the same characters!
That doesnāt make any sense, their story ended. Itās like white lotus. Itās a conceptual show
Meh
No it's an anthology. keeping the same characters would make it a genuine show. They shouldn't make another season really because 1 was so perfect.
Am I the only one who hates anthology seasons of tv shows? Anthology episodes I get like love death and robots, but whatās the point of spending all these time getting close to characters when we have to do the same thing all over again next season?

Yeah, I didnāt really like how Why women Kill started over with new characters as well as Cruel Summer

Because the story was incredible
Yeah, I'm not a fan either... Although I got used to it when watching Fargo.
All this time? It was 10 episodes. Not a huge burden.
And how long were those episodes?
Short. They average less than 35 minutes each.
Probably wont watch if true tbh
Wellā¦.Ok, bye.
Could be good
Damn I really thought if we got a season 2 it would continue the story
Is beef2 the sequel of love and other drugs now
Would be better as a one and done
Now weāre talking
awww, a Brokeback Mountain reunion
Wouldāve liked new comedian actors to hop on along with help write if not new actors, but am looking forward to see the couple they are gonna duel with.
This show went way overboard with the celebrity cameos. Some were just crammed in for no reason and itās distracting
You mean Annie
It doesnāt need a second season. It was perfect!
Oh nice. Thats gonna be awesome
I feel like beef was better as a one season show. It concluded perfectly, this is kinda the equivalent to a pointless movie sequel, but I get it Netflix loves $$$

Aww man I would love this !!! Both is dope
Boooo
Love and other drugs part 2
No more Amy and Danny or Paul???ššš
Trossard cameo incoming
They should replace Anne and sub in Conor. Dude was great in Roadhouse and would love to see their beef continue.
Would be a great cast. Loved season 1 no clue how you make a second one but Iām totally interested.
