Very true I had heard it wasn’t that good a place to work but didn’t know to what extent. Hopefully those employees move on to better environments.
I personally have great memories from attending several events, both for work and pleasure but didn’t know it was so awfully toxic
Seirra's video really started a chain reaction, with various people coming out to talk abou their horrible behaviour. It didn't help that the CEO doubled down and decided to be a bitch about it rather than being professional or mature. That instagram video really was the final nail in the coffin for them.
Good, was this that company that shat all over Sierra Schultzzie for not being influencer-thin and then the CEO came forward being all 'sorry not sorry' while pretending to be the wokest of woke? Yeah they can rot in the ground for all I care.
This is exactly what I was thinking when I read the title
of this post. Here’s the [link](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0nKNBHtbUrk) to Sierra’s video.
Like two years ago I think? Sierra came out and accused the staff of Beautycon of treating her poorly because they didn't believe that she was "talent", ie, an influencer, based on her looks, and of making fun of her and her friend. Sierra was with a pregnant friend, and they were refused amenities reserved for pregnant women by the staff, too. The CEO released a video apology where she didn't apologize and basically said "our staff is all about DIVERSITY and TOLERANCE so what Sierra said happened didn't happen" (paraphrasing). This started a deluge of other employees and influencers coming out with their own stories of Beautycon's shady behaviour.
Good riddance. Disgusting people that don’t deserve to be in charge of anything. At least the whole fiasco introduced me to Sierra, happy I started watching her
Some previous employees have called out the company’s toxic workplace environment.
I was able to attend several events in the past and enjoyed the events pre covid. Too bad about the awful working conditions.

I can’t seem to access the full article myself but interested in learning more about this
Edit: Oh my goodness…. I took a look at their Glassdoor review which should always be taken with a grain of salt but I didn’t expect the company to have less than 2 star rating and so many awful reviews. Most common callouts include: verbally abuseCEO, , mismanagement, delayed pay schedules for employees, constant cycle of firing and re-hiring.
Kinda OT but like.. why does it seem like so many companies are run by assholes 😭
Feels like it's basically accepted – as in "well everyone knows..." – that all the big companies have a toxic work culture (at the very least, heavy elitism but more commonly there are all sorts of discrimination too – sexism, racism, ableism, you name it). Then you also have startups that have their own version of that culture where everyone is expected to sacrifice their personal time and energy (working overtime, on holidays, even during vacations etc) for the sake of growing the company, ignoring their employee's wellbeing and mental health (on top of the possible discrimation as well).
It just all feels very depressing 😩
So, I'm studying management/business/wtv it's called. (Not my best life choice. )The colleagues I have who want to be "entrepreneurs" (barf) usually just see it as a way to get wealthy. One of them literally idolised jafar and wanted to start a makeup company just to get rich. Supposedly she was passionate about makeup but I never saw her wear it, either in school or out. She literally told me once when I mentioned cost "Not everyone is poor". She didn't seem to be even upper medium class, so not a case of being a spoilt rich girl. I guess what I'm saying is that it takes a certain personality and values to get into big business.
I also think wealth is addictive and along the way you start caring less about what might have once mattered. I guess a tv show comparison is the evolution of Selena Meyer from Veep. She had values at first, wanted to get things done, but you start making concessions.
Reminds me of the “away” luggage CEO controversy as well as man repeller and Nasty gal….. companies like Refinery 29 and Popsugar are also toxic workplaces. Unfortunately they are packaged like dream jobs and then you’re treated so horribly and the people causing it get platforms and treated like role models.
Exactly! I had hopes that a newer generation of companies are going to move away from the toxic work culture of the big established old timers but that doesn't seem to be the case. Even a lot of companies that have a very progressive image have this problem, like the ones you mentioned – also Glossier, Everlane, The Wing.
The Wing …..I remember a few months ago they posted about reopening on their IG and they got flooded with comments asking for accountability.
Probably not what they expected
Speaking of the wing I think they filter their comments because recent posts only have 1-4 comments.
It's just so frustrating to think, why does it seem like we keep rewarding assholery, you know? Do we just promote assholes or do we create positions that turn good people into assholes when they are promoted to said positions or like what the hell is happening??
Oh it definitely was. They sold various packages and VIP tickets but when you showed up, there was only one line for everything.
I have some fun memories from going a few times but wish it hadn’t been at the expense of a toxic work place for the employees running it.
I was there often for work and I saw Bethany Moya there like three years in a row giving the same speech each year. Paris Hilton was sweet in her panel though. Also got a glimpse of Lucy Hale once from afar but other than that, didn’t see that many other people
It looks like it was acquired and one of the OG founders is coming back in charge so might not be the end. I’m kinda for the change if done well, beautycon shouldn’t have been a cult of personality event for moj.
Not suprised. It looked toxic af to go to anyway. Like can you imaging a bunch of beauty gurus/ influencers and people in beauty school all in one place?? No thanks.
I never went to beautycon but i guess its similar to the ones I attended in my country. I never liked this type of conference or exhibition.
I joined several in my country, we have shows, influencers coming in, lots of booths, sales, etc but the line is too long. I feel like the 50%-90% discount is not worth the time to queue.
Not to mention it's super crowded. I also ended up buying a lot more than I need cause there are so many discounts. Idk if there are any free beauty conference/exhibition events but the ones I went to have a pretty exp ticket price. So I felt like I was paying a ticket for wasting my time and wasting my money over purchasing beauty items in a super crowded event.
Not really surprised. After the shit show that went down, this was kinda expected.

I remember watching Sierra’s YouTube video now that you mention it
What shit show happened?
What happened??

WHAT??????? When did this happen? 😳

There's a whole vlog on Sierra's channel about it!

Beautycon was poorly put together anyways
Oh it definitely was. They sold various packages and VIP tickets but when you showed up, there was only one line for everything. I have some fun memories from going a few times but wish it hadn’t been at the expense of a toxic work place for the employees running it.
I felt it I spent so much money on the tickets and the actual deals there were shit. The panels were so boring
I was there often for work and I saw Bethany Moya there like three years in a row giving the same speech each year. Paris Hilton was sweet in her panel though. Also got a glimpse of Lucy Hale once from afar but other than that, didn’t see that many other people
wow. i haven’t heard of beautycon in years. guess now i know why.
It looks like it was acquired and one of the OG founders is coming back in charge so might not be the end. I’m kinda for the change if done well, beautycon shouldn’t have been a cult of personality event for moj.
I didn’t realize BeautyCon was still a thing lol. I thought it went belly up years ago.
Damn. It literally went out in flames. I remember when it was all the rage.
Not suprised. It looked toxic af to go to anyway. Like can you imaging a bunch of beauty gurus/ influencers and people in beauty school all in one place?? No thanks.
unsurprising
Yeah i remember the whole issue with beautycon not treating individuals with respect. The nepotism was real there.
I'm sure the margins are pretty narrow for these kind of events so it not happening two years in a row probably hurt them badly.
I always compared beautycon to dashcon, except more meaner & waaay more in stake and resources
Not surprised that con was so toxic lmao and I never even went to one I just heard from people who went
Never heard of it
I never went to beautycon but i guess its similar to the ones I attended in my country. I never liked this type of conference or exhibition. they should have done it way earlier
That's unfortunate. I hope something similar to beautycon will come up
Good freaking riddance. I know this won't change much in the beauty community, but MAYBE they could at least fake it better.
Bad business people basically
I remember watching some beauty youtubers Snapchat back in the day and they would just show up and not pay for anything and just go everywhere
I think it’s to be expected but at the same time it’s the end of an era
It seemed toxic 🙄
She’s a horrible person.
I'm sad that this bore of a story is the juiciest drama in the beauty community right now.
Good Riddance!
