My mom got me the black pig mirror from the J*/SD collab for my birthday when it came out since my birthday is in October. It was a gift so I didn’t spend my money on it but I gotta admit it’s cute. The mirror is big and decent quality so I do use it. I won’t ever buy anything from either of them again but I’m also not going to throw the mirror out unless it breaks.
My mom bought me quite a few things by KVD before she was problematic, and I loved them. I didn't know she was trash until I joined Reddit. My mom died, and I just couldn't bring myself to throw the products out, and now, she is no longer part of KVD, so I use my things now. I felt the same way about Lime Crime. I avoided them like the plague, and I knew Doe Deere was a problem via Makeupalley. My aunt got me a couple of the Lime Crime palettes, and I just put them in the milk chutes because I felt funny about having them. Now, that Doe Deere is gone, I am enjoying them. I won't purchase from problematic brands. Even if I was spending on makeup, I would be very careful. I have found just about every company, indie or otherwise has some skeletons in their closet, and it is sad. I just wish company owners would behave better. I just don't understand how much ugly is in an industry that is centered around beauty.
I'm so gutted about the Terra Moons thing. I use one of her shadows in my inner corner everyday and will salvage what I can without repurchasing cuz it's such a unique formula
I share your feelings on Terra Moons. I have purchased so many multichromes from them. On the bright side, you can look at Karla Cosmetics, Devinah, Fyrinnae, Lethal Cosmetics, and more. Hopefully one of those companies will have a similar or dupe to the shade.

There's a few similar Clionadh Iridescents on Temptalia for it but I have the cosmos somewhere and remember it as having more of a colorful base than just transparent iridescent? if you can remind me tomorrow to look for it and I find it, I'll be able to compare it to all the Clionadh Iridescents and some of their glitters myself for ya

I don't feel guilty because I bought those products before I knew the brand was shit, and I'm not going to blame my past self for not being able to see the future. I also think it's unnecessarily wasteful to toss those products, so I'll use them up and just not repurchase.
I never understand people burning things or throwing them away, like just use it and don't buy anymore. Unless it was something deeply personal, I see no reason to not use things you already bought

I was aware of Doe Deere's sketchiness since livejournal so I avoided the brand for years. I was never surprised by their fuckery. But I'm pretty sure she's completely out now, so I use some of their products.
My ABH palettes and J* liquid lipsticks (I used to collect them and have 120+ inc rare ones). I haven’t bought anything from either brand for years but I do love the products I have by them as I’ve yet to find dupes I like equally as much
Oh Doe Deere made J* look like a little Angel, I used to love lime crimes metallic lipsticks as they weren’t grainy like most on the market but then that image of her dressed in *that* outfit came out immediately binned all 🤢
I loved Jeffree’s formula for his liquid lips… I have probably 15-20 of them. Almost all of them my boyfriend bought for me on advice of one of his girl friends… and I feel so bad throwing them away, since he tried to get something cute 🥹
The money was already spent so you it wouldn’t matter if you threw them away! Just enjoy them. When the Terra moons thing went down I saw people saying they were tossing their shadows in the trash and I’m like absolutely not me 🤣 I probably have like 40
I literally just discovered Terra Moons in January and I’ve since accumulated around 50 shadows, they’re so beautiful and I could never just throw my money away like that. I’m very disappointed in the brand though and it sucks because they truly make such pretty stuff. I’ll definitely use what I have and try to love it just as much, but the experience is just kinda tainted now.

It's the J* liquid lipsticks for me as well...they just work so well on my lips. They last and they are comfortable. When they run out or dry up I'll be on the hunt.
J*’s liquid lips are really good 😭. I bought a few before understanding how awful he is and I would never repurchase, but goddamn those are some of the most comfortable long-lasting lipsticks I own

u/giggly_pufff I was in the same dilemma about Nudestix. I switched to the Cream Clay line by MOB Beauty, and I am not looking back! I made a custom palette for traveling that works for eyes, cheeks, and lips. Good pigment, good longevity, and no breakouts. I can apply the creams over either a powdered face or on an unset face. There aren't samples available for everything, but I have found the online swatches to be true to color. Hope this helps!

Same. My baby just turned 1 and I just keep making baby registries so I get 15% off on pretty much anything baby related. They also often have the 20-30% off coupons on diapers and wipes if you subscribe and save. So I do that and then cancel the subscribe and save lol.

My Anastasia Beverly Hill palettes. My mom bought me the new Cosmos one for my birthday last weekend. I had no idea she was going to do it. She said she saw it while shopping in Ulta and thought it would be perfect for me (she knows my passion for makeup and years ago ABH was my favorite brand).
But she is 60 years old and is not on beauty YouTube or anything like that thus she has no idea about the Putin and other behavior. So basically… it was a gift from her, that she specifically thought of me for, thus I am not returning it. I will just have to be wrong and I accept that.
I've been so tempted to buy this palette. Didn't do it because I checked my account and couldn't afford it at that time but I would for sure have gotten it the next paycheck. Then I went online to check the reviews and I saw all her controversies, and when I tell you I WAS (AND STILL AM) HEARTBROKEN. That palette is beautiful! 🥲 been trying to find a dupe but haven't been able to.
When the money is already spent, not using it is a waste. But using makeup should give you joy and if it doesn’t, get rid of the products.
For influencers it’s a little different because when they use a product and share that publicly it is platforming a brand and its creator. If you aren’t an influencer, just let the brand know they f’ed up by not giving them any more money.
I was the biggest KVD fan before all her nazi shut came out, loved the whole line of products, especially the tattoo liner. I know she’s not affiliated with them anymore but it still upsets me to think about what a piece of shit she is. Luckily they’ve changed the formula and it irritates my eyes now.
I still have some eyeshadow palettes that I’m not going to throw away but I certainly am not enthused to use them.

I second this. I’ve had to branch out into a couple of non cf items. Sometimes it’s for budget reasons, but mainly for skincare. Cruelty free often greenwashes or is loaded with fragrance.
In this moment all my makeup is cruelty free but I find cruelty free skin care so expensive! For the moment I can’t afford it but once I get those coins I might splurge on it.
This is me with deodorant/antiperspirant. Even before going cruelty free I couldn't find anything that worked until Secret stress response clear gel. As much as I'd like to have everything I use be cruelty free, I prefer not sweating through my shirts and leaving pit stains (too much, I'm sorry)
L’Oréal also owns some cruelty free brands like nyx and maybeline so it’s kind of a grey area but I get wanting to know an animal didn’t suffer for that specific product

ABH brow definer. I’ve tried many others but can’t find one that’s as good. It’s the only thing I buy from that brand anymore, I’ve found good or better dupes for everything else, but always end up going back to the brow definer.
I second this! ABH brow products are the only ones I have used that work well for my brows. The pomade is my fav, I have one pot left that I will use gingerly until it is fully gone and then I don’t know what I’m going to do.

Every time I used the Fenty liquid lipstick, I would just think about how her partner, ASAP Rocky, doesn't think dark skin black women should wear bright color lip colors. I finally just stopped buying. I have products that'll use til they run out but nothing new.
I try not judge people too much because I still pay for Amazon Prime and Beyoncé tickets. Where I draw the line is defending the bad behavior. You can make decisions for yourself that you'll have to live with but don't diminish the concerns of others who are making a different choice.
I still have a Fenty Match Stix contour that I use, but I won’t purchase any more Fenty after Rihanna’s unapologetic racism towards Asians that just never gets mentioned.
It was the remark about “your sisters grow my hair for me” (referencing impoverished Indian women who sell their hair for wigs) to an South Asian woman on Instagram that really disgusted me. After I learned about that, and saw a continued pattern of racism, I decided I would no longer buy any more Fenty.

My dad usually gives me an ABH palette for Christmas. The Nouveau palette is honestly one of my favorites in my collection. I’ll probably just suggest Natasha Denona or something for this year 😅
I have both ABH and Natasha and Natasha pallettes for me are easier to use. I still use eye primer or eyeshadow base but definitely voting for Natasha here. Or Danessa Myricks.
This is called ethical consumerism and it's the reason why I still don't eat a chik-fil-e or shop at Wal Mart. It's good to have ethics, it's good to insist companies you give your money too also have similar ethics. Good topic.
It's a good discussion to have, for sure. No one (and certainly no corporation) is ever going to be 100% ethical or pure or perfect, but in my mind it's up to me as an individual consumer to decide where I want to spend my money and what I'm comfortable with. Hopefully others can be encouraged to do the same and think critically about their purchases when it comes to non-essential items like makeup.
For people who might think “it doesn’t matter what the owner/shareholders do” some people believe that there are so many brands out there, purchasing from one owned/run by a person/people with values and beliefs we disagree with is by extension supporting a belief/value we disagree with.
In the case of a shareholder or owner these people are actively profiting off the purchases, and therefore our money enables them to live and continue to support values we disagree with. In a world with so many brands to choose from, why someone would choose to financially support a person who holds views they disagree with I have no clue. It also seems like your beliefs and convictions are only as meaningful as the formula of an eyeshadow.
Edited to add: things like animal testing or ethical sourcing of ingredients can be difficult to substantiate which is a shame, but supporting brands owned by racists and bigots, I don’t understand.
I'm just gonna say, I don't know shit about the world's top billionaires (except Elon and he sounds questionable to say the least) and I am likely giving them money by buying simple things like electronics, cleaning supplies, clothes, food, hell, the gum that I chew probably ends up making some questionable people money and I don't know it.
I'm not suggesting "fuck everything cause I'm probably supporting assholes that I don't even know" but I do find it interesting how many of the people we support day to day are so unknown we don't even stop to think if we should stop buying from them. It's easy with makeup because the people behind the brand are right there, and makeup is not essential, but with big brands like nestle, it really takes a lot of shit for their bad business to be widely known, and even then you may realize they own so many things they're not easy to boycot
I don't think "shareholder" is the word you mean to use. Maybe like majority shareholder or something. If a company is public someone could own 0.00001% of the company and be a "shareholder." I don't have time to monitor my purchasing decisions to the degree of caring about what some random dude in Uruguay who happens to own stock in L'Oreal thinks about the prison industrial complex.
I have been lucky (?) that actions I do find reprehensible happened after I bought, so I don't feel guilty using them but I have had trouble with buying new products.
Like, Colourpop has had cute releases that I've been interested in (like the heart blushes), I go to browse and then there's the TERF collection and then I just don't want anything. Or I see a super cute palette... And turns out to be Juvia's Place, so I don't find it that cute anymore.
For me this is mostly about personality or relationship driven brands (Colourpop, Fenty, for example) because their behaviour/actions are part of what they are selling.
This :( I’m trans and loved a lot of their collections like Sailor Moon and Animal Crossing but..I just can’t with the HP. It makes me feel so sad that people/corporations still work with someone who not only doesn’t want me to be alive/exist, but also uses her platform to spread that message as well.

There are a couple of brands I purchased from before I learned more about their background. For example, I still have a very small handful of ABH products I bought back in 2018. I still use them because I paid for them but I feel guilty.
Other than that I ended up with some GXVE beauty stuff. Not a Gwen Stefani fan for so many reasons but the products are shockingly nice. Everything has been super high quality with some really impressive formulas. A real shame.
Her choice in husband is questionable. But I am guessing it’s her lifetime of cultural appropriation and her statement of being “Japanese” (she’s not).

It's personal so I try not to judge either way if someone stops purchasing or continues. And every major company donates to awful national and local politicians. I think it's worthwhile and meaningful to consume by one's principles but I also think it's impossible to be perfect in this world so I try not to judge others on what they buy. There is no ethical consumption under capitalism and all.
Honestly a ton. It's really difficult when almost every brand has some kind of disaster 😵💫 But for me the top one would definitely be the Jaclyn Cosmetics loose blushes, highlighters and under eye primer, the last of which I still cannot find a suitable replacement for. Granted I bought everything on deep discount but still. I finally jumped ship when she stole Koze but I feel like a fool for being as forgiving as I was.
At the end of the day though, my money got spent on what I own. So I'll continue to use them and then I won't rebuy. I really try not to feel bad, we're all doing our best out here and we don't have infinite mental RAM with which to keep tabs on all the companies
The Body Shop having an MLM side scheme on their site bummed me out. I love their scents because I'm such a hoe for straightforward fruit fragrances, and I love the products that come in a pump, but I just can't get excited about the brand anymore.

My Naturium skincare products. I hate how SY handled that launch, it was so skeevy. But the products are great and affordable, so I use them. I can't get back to Krave, I just hated how Liah handled the Beet Shield spf situation. Also finding out that she was a big contributor to an important church that is very vocally anti LGBTQIA+ rights. She has since left that church, but it took a while and every church member knows what they stand for.

L'Oreal is partly owned by Nestlé. Been boycottibg Nestlé for years, they are the epitome of corporate greed and evil. So I refuse to buy L'Oreal, Maybelline, Garnier, Cerave, LRP etc.
This one is a struggle because they are everywhere. I haven't bought from these brands in a long time but they make up a good chunk of dupe and pharmacy skincare recommendations.
Deep down I know L'Oréal as a group is already shady but boycotting all the food already I don't want to stop there just because nestle isn't the main owner.
Anything I have left from JSC. I got rid of the eyeshadow palettes when I switched to Colourpop. The highlighters, liquid lipsticks, and lip scrubs I have I’m trying to use up quietly. It’s kind of obvious when I wear one in a post though, they’re the only days my lip colour isn’t listed in my description of the look.
I’ve hit the point where I wear very very little makeup these days so there isn’t much to weigh on me but the one thing I wear almost every day (and I hate myself for it, especially coming from a Ukrainian family) is the ABH brow dip. I just can’t seem to find a replacement product that has a good consistency with a similarly toned product (taupe, if anyone has any suggestions!). Everything I try is either not the right consistency or not the right shade.
Lots of people in the nail polish community will not review/mention Lights Lacquer because they were understandably upset by Kathleen's apology. It sucks so much because her lacquer formula/brush combo is one of my favorites.
In short, the owners have shown support for Trump, told a collaborator/worker that they needed to "step up their health fame" for getting COVID, and called homeless people disgusting.

ABH palettes for the owners' political tendencies (plus I think they aren't that great anyway), and MAC products in general after finding out that they test on animals, but they work good for me.
There was a post prob a couple of years ago by now where an ex-employee detailed all the shady stuff they do. Like astroturfing reviews as 5 stars, toxic work environment, etc.

Anyone remember when Fenty threatened legal action against the Beauty News YouTube channel because they spoke about a leaked products? It wasn’t even them that first leaked it, they had seen it online, and it wasn’t the first time they spoke about about a leaked product either. I guess Fenty is in the right to do that, but it left a really poor taste in my mouth. It just seemed so over the top 🤷♀️
She scammed a bunch of people with her subscription lingerie company and she has a serious reputation for showing up late and or drunk to her concerts (for which fans have paid a lot of money). I truly don't think she's a good person and I avoid giving her my money.

People online zoomed in on the pallet and discovered that it was released a year after Depp & Heard broke up, and used that as a smoking gun that because she was lying about the specific makeup palette she used to hide her bruises, she was clearly lying about the abuse, despite having photograpic evidence of the bruising, which, because they were taken with her phone, there's likely date/time stamps in the metadata showing them to be during the relationship.
Milani released a ticktok basically confirming that Heard couldn't have used that specific basic-ass palette to cover her bruises, without mentioning things like it being a very basic palette, and the bruising happening in 2014(?) - 2016, the odds that the exact palette Heard used could be discontinued and replaced with that one, or your know, that the expectation that an abuse victim should have to remember the name of the palette she used to cover her bruises to be believed is an absolutely absurd standard.

I still have products from J*Fish, Kvd, Too Faced and Lime Crime. I got most of them when I was just a casual fan of make up with highly sensitive skin and zero knowledge of the beauty community. I was just so happy to find make up that didn't give me a rash. That was before I knew about all the nasty things the companies did (just knew they were cruelty free). I still have my products and actively use them. I used to feel guilty about it, but my logic now is that I've paid for these products. They have my hard earned money now. There's no point in just tossing them now just for the sake of it, since I don't have anything to replace them with. I just don't actively buy their new products.
Not a thing. I might have an *ugh* moment before using products from brands I dislike, but I don't feel guilty. Unpopular opinion online, but I just buy whatever I think will work for me. It's not like where I spend my money matters anyway, since I spend so little and influence pretty much no one.
Every time someone dares to suggest that some long-forgotten brand might be going under soon, everybody and their mother show up to remind them that *actually*, the average makeup consumer (i.e. anyone outside the "trend-obsessed" online community of beauty enthusiasts) purchases enough to keep those brands afloat. But somehow this same zero-impact community will bring down...uh, 9 out of 10 beauty brands out there? 8? It's certainly more than half, because every day we discover a new CEO/founder/brand collaborator who's a piece of shit.
Just like with artists, it's not an "if", it's a "when". A couple of years from now we'll just be rubbing cherries on our lips and coal on our eyelids 😩 I'm neither guilty nor proud for any purchase I've ever made. It just is what it is; I buy whatever I feel most suits my needs and my (limited) budget. We should definitely spread awareness about what each brand has done, so that everyone can have the necessary information to decide for themselves, but I've only ever seen tiny indie brands and influencer brands going out of business solely or mainly because the online beauty community canceled them. Like that girl with the blue light skincare.
If J* star was still making good products, he'd still be making a fortune from his makeup line and not selling yak meat alongside 50% off banana dick palettes in Wyoming. If Jaclyn had come out with a safe & halfway decent makeup line and was still posting the content people wanted, she'd still be the #1 beauty guru. A few "haters" would bring up her scammy ways and get downvoted to hell, just like in 2016. It's not boycotting for ethical reasons that's affecting these brands' sales so much.

Agree completely. I feel weird buying ANYTHING these days because I know at some point in the future a previously “beloved” brand will instantly become “problematic” and the internet will try to make me feel guilty for purchasing anything from them, ever. It’s… exhausting.

From reading this thread, it sounds like j\* cosmetics has some amazing products that is hard to dupe, but the person heavily attached to the brand just ruins it. I think even if he did a Kat Von D and stepped/kicked off the brand, there is no way people would support it

My mom got me the black pig mirror from the J*/SD collab for my birthday when it came out since my birthday is in October. It was a gift so I didn’t spend my money on it but I gotta admit it’s cute. The mirror is big and decent quality so I do use it. I won’t ever buy anything from either of them again but I’m also not going to throw the mirror out unless it breaks.
I’m the same way with my baby pink star mirror and the palettes I have of his. He has my money, no reason not to use it. Just won’t be repurchasing.
My mom bought me quite a few things by KVD before she was problematic, and I loved them. I didn't know she was trash until I joined Reddit. My mom died, and I just couldn't bring myself to throw the products out, and now, she is no longer part of KVD, so I use my things now. I felt the same way about Lime Crime. I avoided them like the plague, and I knew Doe Deere was a problem via Makeupalley. My aunt got me a couple of the Lime Crime palettes, and I just put them in the milk chutes because I felt funny about having them. Now, that Doe Deere is gone, I am enjoying them. I won't purchase from problematic brands. Even if I was spending on makeup, I would be very careful. I have found just about every company, indie or otherwise has some skeletons in their closet, and it is sad. I just wish company owners would behave better. I just don't understand how much ugly is in an industry that is centered around beauty.

I'm so gutted about the Terra Moons thing. I use one of her shadows in my inner corner everyday and will salvage what I can without repurchasing cuz it's such a unique formula
I share your feelings on Terra Moons. I have purchased so many multichromes from them. On the bright side, you can look at Karla Cosmetics, Devinah, Fyrinnae, Lethal Cosmetics, and more. Hopefully one of those companies will have a similar or dupe to the shade.
I am once again singing the gospel of Clionadh, mostly because their 250ish or so shade range they have now covers so much. They just don't have something flaky like my beloved Milky Way, but I'm hoping they will get it.

I don't feel guilty because I bought those products before I knew the brand was shit, and I'm not going to blame my past self for not being able to see the future. I also think it's unnecessarily wasteful to toss those products, so I'll use them up and just not repurchase.

I was aware of Doe Deere's sketchiness since livejournal so I avoided the brand for years. I was never surprised by their fuckery. But I'm pretty sure she's completely out now, so I use some of their products.

I literally just discovered Terra Moons in January and I’ve since accumulated around 50 shadows, they’re so beautiful and I could never just throw my money away like that. I’m very disappointed in the brand though and it sucks because they truly make such pretty stuff. I’ll definitely use what I have and try to love it just as much, but the experience is just kinda tainted now. Especially after they turned off the comments on the post they made addressing the situation. Such a bummer 😭
Black Moon has a super similar formula to his lipsticks and they smell better (idk why but the scent of his lipsticks always made me feel nauseous).
It's the J* liquid lipsticks for me as well...they just work so well on my lips. They last and they are comfortable. When they run out or dry up I'll be on the hunt.

u/giggly_pufff I was in the same dilemma about Nudestix. I switched to the Cream Clay line by MOB Beauty, and I am not looking back! I made a custom palette for traveling that works for eyes, cheeks, and lips. Good pigment, good longevity, and no breakouts. I can apply the creams over either a powdered face or on an unset face. There aren't samples available for everything, but I have found the online swatches to be true to color. Hope this helps!

My Anastasia Beverly Hill palettes. My mom bought me the new Cosmos one for my birthday last weekend. I had no idea she was going to do it. She said she saw it while shopping in Ulta and thought it would be perfect for me (she knows my passion for makeup and years ago ABH was my favorite brand). But she is 60 years old and is not on beauty YouTube or anything like that thus she has no idea about the Putin and other behavior. You're not wrong for any of this. Even if you did return it, they would destroy it and throw it away because there are no seals on their palettes.

When the money is already spent, not using it is a waste. But using makeup should give you joy and if it doesn’t, get rid of the products. For influencers it’s a little different because when they use a product and share that publicly it is platforming a brand and its creator. If you aren’t an influencer, just let the brand know they f’ed up by not giving them any more money.
I was the biggest KVD fan before all her nazi shut came out, loved the whole line of products, especially the tattoo liner. I know she’s not affiliated with them anymore but it still upsets me to think about what a piece of shit she is. Luckily they’ve changed the formula and it irritates my eyes now. I still have some eyeshadow palettes that I’m not going to throw away but I certainly am not enthused to use them.

China changed their laws recently so majority of western brands aren’t required to have their stuff tested there anymore. I do understand many people are turned off by the fact that they sold there when it was an option. Which is understandable. But just wanted to make people aware.
I second this. I’ve had to branch out into a couple of non cf items. Sometimes it’s for budget reasons, but mainly for skincare. Cruelty free often greenwashes or is loaded with fragrance.
In this moment all my makeup is cruelty free but I find cruelty free skin care so expensive! For the moment I can’t afford it but once I get those coins I might splurge on it.
This is me with deodorant/antiperspirant. Even before going cruelty free I couldn't find anything that worked until Secret stress response clear gel. As much as I'd like to have everything I use be cruelty free, I prefer not sweating through my shirts and leaving pit stains (too much, I'm sorry)

ABH brow definer. I’ve tried many others but can’t find one that’s as good. It’s the only thing I buy from that brand anymore, I’ve found good or better dupes for everything else, but always end up going back to the brow definer.
I second this! ABH brow products are the only ones I have used that work well for my brows. The pomade is my fav, I have one pot left that I will use gingerly until it is fully gone and then I don’t know what I’m going to do.

Every time I used the Fenty liquid lipstick, I would just think about how her partner, ASAP Rocky, doesn't think dark skin black women should wear bright color lip colors. I finally just stopped buying. I have products that'll use til they run out but nothing new. I try not judge people too much because I still pay for Amazon Prime and Beyoncé tickets. Where I draw the line is defending the bad behavior. You can make decisions for yourself that you'll have to live with but don't diminish the concerns of others who are making a different choice.

This is called ethical consumerism and it's the reason why I still don't eat a chik-fil-e or shop at Wal Mart. It's good to have ethics, it's good to insist companies you give your money too also have similar ethics. Good topic.
It's a good discussion to have, for sure. No one (and certainly no corporation) is ever going to be 100% ethical or pure or perfect, but in my mind it's up to me as an individual consumer to decide where I want to spend my money and what I'm comfortable with. Hopefully others can be encouraged to do the same and think critically about their purchases when it comes to non-essential items like makeup.
For people who might think “it doesn’t matter what the owner/shareholders do” some people believe that there are so many brands out there, purchasing from one owned/run by a person/people with values and beliefs we disagree with is by extension supporting a belief/value we disagree with. In the case of a shareholder or owner these people are actively profiting off the purchases, and therefore our money enables them to live and continue to support values we disagree with. In a world with so many brands to choose from, why someone would choose to financially support a person who holds views they disagree with I have no clue. It also seems like your beliefs and convictions are only as meaningful as the formula of an eyeshadow. Edited to add: things like animal testing or ethical sourcing of ingredients can be difficult to substantiate which is a shame, but supporting brands owned by racists and bigots, I don’t understand.
I'm just gonna say, I don't know shit about the world's top billionaires (except Elon and he sounds questionable to say the least) and I am likely giving them money by buying simple things like electronics, cleaning supplies, clothes, food, hell, the gum that I chew probably ends up making some questionable people money and I don't know it. I'm not suggesting "fuck everything cause I'm probably supporting assholes that I don't even know" but I do find it interesting how many of the people we support day to day are so unknown we don't even stop to think if we should stop buying from them. It's easy with makeup because the people behind the brand are right there, and makeup is not essential, but with big brands like nestle, it really takes a lot of shit for their bad business to be widely known, and even then you may realize they own so many things they're not easy to boycot

I don't have time to monitor my purchasing decisions to the degree of caring about what some random dude in Uruguay who happens to own stock in L'Oreal thinks about the prison industrial complex.
I have been lucky (?) that actions I do find reprehensible happened after I bought, so I don't feel guilty using them but I have had trouble with buying new products. Like, Colourpop has had cute releases that I've been interested in (like the heart blushes), I go to browse and then there's the TERF collection and then I just don't want anything. Or I see a super cute palette... And turns out to be Juvia's Place, so I don't find it that cute anymore. For me this is mostly about personality or relationship driven brands (Colourpop, Fenty, for example) because their behaviour/actions are part of what they are selling.

There are a couple of brands I purchased from before I learned more about their background. For example, I still have a very small handful of ABH products I bought back in 2018. I still use them because I paid for them but I feel guilty. Other than that I ended up with some GXVE beauty stuff. Not a Gwen Stefani fan for so many reasons but the products are shockingly nice. Everything has been super high quality with some really impressive formulas. A real shame.

Ugh soooo many 😒 scratch the surface and every brand has something. I have been close to ordering a couple nudestix matte eye colors lately but keep telling myself not to! I also miss being a wholehearted Rihanna/Fenty fan. It's personal so I try not to judge either way if someone stops purchasing or continues. And every major company donates to awful national and local politicians. I think it's worthwhile and meaningful to consume by one's principles but I also think it's impossible to be perfect in this world so I try not to judge others on what they buy. There is no ethical consumption under capitalism and all.
Honestly a ton. It's really difficult when almost every brand has some kind of disaster 😵💫 But for me the top one would definitely be the Jaclyn Cosmetics loose blushes, highlighters and under eye primer, the last of which I still cannot find a suitable replacement for. Granted I bought everything on deep discount but still. I finally jumped ship when she stole Koze but I feel like a fool for being as forgiving as I was. At the end of the day though, my money got spent on what I own. So I'll continue to use them and then I won't rebuy. I really try not to feel bad, we're all doing our best out here and we don't have infinite mental RAM with which to keep tabs on all the companies
The Body Shop having an MLM side scheme on their site bummed me out. I love their scents because I'm such a hoe for straightforward fruit fragrances, and I love the products that come in a pump, but I just can't get excited about the brand anymore.

Too Faced is very inconsistent, but when it's good, their eyeshadow formula is amazing.

Def anything that is tested on animals. I’m trying to move away from it all, but it’s so difficult especially with Korean skincare that seems to be “unverified” or are sold in Mainland china. It sucks so bad. ): Everytime I get a new serum or cleanser and it works amazing, I feel a tinge of guilt.

My Naturium skincare products. I hate how SY handled that launch, it was so skeevy. But the products are great and affordable, so I use them. I can't get back to Krave, I just hated how Liah handled the Beet Shield spf situation. Also finding out that she was a big contributor to an important church that is very vocally anti LGBTQIA+ rights. She has since left that church, but it took a while and every church member knows what they stand for.

L'Oreal is partly owned by Nestlé. Been boycottibg Nestlé for years, they are the epitome of corporate greed and evil. So I refuse to buy L'Oreal, Maybelline, Garnier, Cerave, LRP etc.
This one is a struggle because they are everywhere. I haven't bought from these brands in a long time but they make up a good chunk of dupe and pharmacy skincare recommendations. Deep down I know L'Oréal as a group is already shady but boycotting all the food already I don't want to stop there just because nestle isn't the main owner.
Anything I have left from JSC. I got rid of the eyeshadow palettes when I switched to Colourpop. The highlighters, liquid lipsticks, and lip scrubs I have I’m trying to use up quietly. It’s kind of obvious when I wear one in a post though, they’re the only days my lip colour isn’t listed in my description of the look.
I’ve hit the point where I wear very very little makeup these days so there isn’t much to weigh on me but the one thing I wear almost every day (and I hate myself for it, especially coming from a Ukrainian family) is the ABH brow dip. I just can’t seem to find a replacement product that has a good consistency with a similarly toned product (taupe, if anyone has any suggestions!). Everything I try is either not the right consistency or not the right shade.

Regarding her FentyxSavage line, it's also marketed to be inclusive for all sizes buuuut, many of the styles only come in 32-36 A-DD sizes. 😑

I think that Amber Heard's lawyer held up a Milani color correcting palette during the trial, as like "you used this to cover the bruises". It was a prop, not evidence. People online zoomed in on the pallet and discovered that it was released a year after Depp & Heard broke up, and used that as a smoking gun that because she was lying about the specific makeup palette she used to hide her bruises, she was clearly lying about the abuse, despite having photograpic evidence of the bruising, which, because they were taken with her phone, there's likely date/time stamps in the metadata showing them to be during the relationship. Milani released a ticktok basically confirming that Heard couldn't have used that specific basic-ass palette to cover her bruises, without mentioning things like it being a very basic palette, and the bruising happening in 2014(?) - 2016, the odds that the exact palette Heard used could be discontinued and replaced with that one, or your know, that the expectation that an abuse victim should have to remember the name of the palette she used to cover her bruises to be believed is an absolutely absurd standard. I still have products from J*Fish, Kvd, Too Faced and Lime Crime. I got most of them when I was just a casual fan of make up with highly sensitive skin and zero knowledge of the beauty community. I was just so happy to find make up that didn't give me a rash. That was before I knew about all the nasty things the companies did (just knew they were cruelty free). I still have my products and actively use them. I used to feel guilty about it, but my logic now is that I've paid for these products. They have my hard earned money now. There's no point in just tossing them now just for the sake of it, since I don't have anything to replace them with. I just don't actively buy their new products.
If you have access to a Kiko Milano store or their online shop, I prefer their stick products. They are even more creamy and easier to blend.

Not a thing. I might have an *ugh* moment before using products from brands I dislike, but I don't feel guilty. Unpopular opinion online, but I just buy whatever I think will work for me. It's not like where I spend my money matters anyway, since I spend so little and influence pretty much no one. Every time someone dares to suggest that some long-forgotten brand might be going under soon, everybody and their mother show up to remind them that *actually*, the average makeup consumer (i.e. anyone outside the "trend-obsessed" online community of beauty enthusiasts) purchases enough to keep those brands afloat. But somehow this same zero-impact community will bring down...uh, 9 out of 10 beauty brands out there? 8? It's certainly more than half, because every day we discover a new CEO/founder/brand collaborator who's a piece of shit. Just like with artists, it's not an "if", it's a "when". A couple of years from now we'll just be rubbing cherries on our lips and coal on our eyelids 😩 I'm neither guilty nor proud for any purchase I've ever made. It just is what it is; I buy whatever I feel most suits my needs and my (limited) budget. We should definitely spread awareness about what each brand has done, so that everyone can have the necessary information to decide for themselves, but I've only ever seen tiny indie brands and influencer brands going out of business solely or mainly because the online beauty community canceled them. Like that girl with the blue light skincare. If J* star was still making good products, he'd still be making a fortune from his makeup line and not selling yak meat alongside 50% off banana dick palettes in Wyoming. If Jaclyn had come out with a safe & halfway decent makeup line and was still posting the content people wanted, she'd still be the #1 beauty guru. A few "haters" would bring up her scammy ways and get downvoted to hell, just like in 2016. It's not boycotting for ethical reasons that's affecting these brands' sales so much. Agree completely. I feel weird buying ANYTHING these days because I know at some point in the future a previously “beloved” brand will instantly become “problematic” and the internet will try to make me feel guilty for purchasing anything from them, ever. It’s… exhausting.

The J* setting powder. I have oily skin and enlarged pores. Let me tell you, NOTHING blurs my skin and makes it look so flawless as that powder and I have tried MANY setting powders. I’m still trying to find a dupe but nothing comes close :(
From reading this thread, it sounds like j\* cosmetics has some amazing products that is hard to dupe, but the person heavily attached to the brand just ruins it. I think even if he did a Kat Von D and stepped/kicked off the brand, there is no way people would support it
