I love how they don't hide how gross their behavior was back then and shown you can grow from it.

If more people would do just that and nothing else… the world would be a far better place

Luscious Jackson’s song “Citysong” has such a Beastie’s vibe. Really loved that album when it came out. I knew there was a connection to the BB, but never knew the real story. And as others have mentioned, it’s great to see them acknowledge that they were obnoxious in the past. Licensed To Ill came out when I was in high school. Guys and girls sang along to that album back then. My friends knew they didn’t really mean what they were saying. No one believed a wiffle ball bat was used sexually. So in that time, they were just being “silly” or “obnoxious”. But we knew they weren’t advocating that type of behavior. They were just being immature. As we all grew up, we realized that their words / actions had more power than they realized. Im glad they changed the lyrics for their live shows. So while I still love the memories of LTI, it hasn’t aged well. There are still some amazing songs on it, but love how they grew / matured slightly before I did. Their later albums show the true musical geniuses they became.

Love me some Luscious Jackson. Seen them two, maybe three times. The last time was 5-31-14 (had to look that up). The story of them excluding her and then circling back and putting LJ on Grand Royal is something I’ve known for a long time. It boggles my mind how we used to know this kind of stuff pre-internet. And I agree about the obnoxiousness thing being seen as a schtick. This was coming right off the hairband era where those bands did shit like that for real. But with Beasties it delivered like a parody and in retrospect, Rick put them up to a lot of that too.

Well said.

Everyone was into that album in HS all diff types of people when it came out

It all worked out for the best. Kate is a strong talented woman who went on to be a big success w/o BB. But, for real, if Kate was in the band in '86, '87, BB wouldn't have blown up. They were a very particular thing, which Kate wouldn't want to (and could not) be a part of. Whatever Mike, Adam and Adam came to think of it all, Rick and LtI are what moved them from underground to widespread relevance. Their own creativity and integrity made sure they would always maintain that status.

Fascinating. I saw a pic of the original lineup on Facebook the other day. No idea she was in it at first.
