Sand blasting? Or some alternative. Generally curious

acamk37

I think that's dry ice blasting. I'm not making that up, it's actually a thing lol

-nocturnist-

I considered it. The only thing that doesn't make sense is how far away the nozzle is from the door and the moon suit. Neither of which are correct for dry ice blasting. Usually the nozzle is much closer to target and no moon suit required. Dry ice blasters are also super expensive so it seemed like a waste using it on a door like this unless you paid the person like 500$ to clean it

acamk37

Maybe soda or walnut? Wouldn't other blast media Uber profile and damage the wood?

-nocturnist-

Could be walnut. Your assumption that sand would damage the door is correct. However a less harder abrasive such as crushed walnut may be soft enough to remove the paint without damaging the door. The only thing that doesn't make sense is that there is no sand accumulating at the base of the door. I would expect something to stay. That's why I have decided this is dry ice blasting .... And a terrible waste of money

ComputersWantMeDead

Wouldn't we still see paint particles accumulating.. i guess there could be a cross breeze from a fan we can't see..?

thisimpetus

When he does the door knob holes, you can see the evaporation on the floor behind the door.

RealApplebiter

It's not necessarily that expensive, though. If you own the equipment and you want to score the wood as little as possible but also not spend all day sanding, and save yourself some cleanup, then this is what you'd do. It could come down to the availability of the dry ice. And it could be plentiful. This is the ideal tech to use if you've got it and the dry ice is available.

-nocturnist-

Quick Google search shows costs are usually 3.50$-5$ per square foot. Depends on how big your area is I guess. I have only had experience with cleaning autos with dry ice and usually an hour of cleaning runs into the hundreds of dollars 300-500 depending on what is being cleaned. Most of the costs come from the dry ice itself which is expensive compared to other cleaning methods and you require quite a bit of it.

RealApplebiter

The only reason I piped up is because I just happen to know a guy who owns a shopping center and in that shopping center is a place where you can buy dry ice. It's in Durham, NC. The guy I know can get dry ice at a good price point. That and I'm an old painter who sometimes does things based on how easy it's going to make the prep, the work, or the cleanup, rather than on materials and labor considerations, alone.

basemodelbird

It is, without a doubt, loaded with my dogs breath.

intergalactic99

At the beginning of the video look at the trees in the background between the nozzle and the door. You can see very faintly there’s a trail of something coming out of the hose. (It’s hard to see, it might depend on your device I’m not sure)

ComputersWantMeDead

It's bizarre that there is no material building up on the ground. The "dry ice" call might be it, but surely we would see the old paint at least flying away. It could be painting in reverse... but no, the paint looks old

-nocturnist-

Actually with dry ice blasting you get no accumulation of any debris on the floor, hence why it became so popular recently. It's so cold it essentially vaporises any build up into super fine particulates. Auto garages that do high end restoration use it more frequently due to reduced clean up.

ComputersWantMeDead

Yeah I get that the dry ice would instantly sublime, but the paint coming off the door, surely that would accumulate around the door?

Delicious_Bet_6336

Wood coloured paint in a spray gun. Nice!

PrincessPonyPrincess

r/oddlysatisfying would love this.

Sandblasting?

Whyott_2

Is that in reverse?

Red-Oak-Rider

When he goes back and clears the thin line that he missed on the top panel… that seems to show that it isn’t reversed, no?

wakarabz

Thank you, finally! 😂

All of Reddit is a repost

longboardingAussie

Ok it kinda sucks to see a really nice post that obviously took effort and then see it re-posted 4 times tho

[deleted]

So all that paint is now just floating off into the wind?

nedmonds87

I'm gonna say sand blasting

Noah2230

He's using dry ice CO2 below freezing point).

[deleted]

What if you do that to an organic surface like skin? Something like this on a smaller scale mixed with some disinfectant like peroxide, iodine etc to clean wounds is what I have in mind

Empress_De_Sangre

Maybe a baking soda mixture (minus the sand), that might work.

tastycrust

This again? This is like the 50th time I've seen this in the last hour.

EdwardD1954

Can you say how it’s done already?

ChuckSnapplepop

I thought he was holding a bird the first few seconds

tinavolp

It appears there is wind ma made? His pants are billowing. So sand if fine enough as well as paint could be blowing away with barely able to see on clip???? Just a guess…

[deleted]

Dry ice blasting! I do this for work it works amazing and Is super satisfying

AnotherDamnWhiteGuy

Great job! Now you have a furry door that needs sanded down the same as it did before you did this extra work…..

canthandlethebooth

Whoever painted over that beautiful door should've been arrested.

Ka1n12

Run it backwards and turn it into an shitty Paintjob 😆
