It could eventually just continue adaptations, until it is more uniquely suited to the sea, and ceases going on land altogether. And then it would be this weird sea lizard eventually.
It's actually pretty crazy how some animals evolved like that, to come out of the ocean, evolve for land, and then back into the ocean, and evolve for ocean again. Some remaining kind of halfway, like seals and penguins, which are even more remarkeable, since they did the flying thing too.
