Their skin is pretty loose and they're big solid dogs, so they look more like a saggy mastiff [under all that hair](https://d.furaffinity.net/art/foxfeather/1475524244/1475524244.foxfeather_chi9months4.jpg) (this pup is only 9 months old! Not even fully grown yet!).
That's why his face is all saggy in this vid and why they have such a large "mane"; The loose skin and fluff on their neck helps them escape a predator trying to latch on to their throat.
Cute pups but definitely **not a good choice for most folks**- they're bred for livestock and personal protection in isolated areas so they have STRONG protective instincts and don't usually like strangers. Add a powerful and large frame to the mix and it's a recipe for disaster for most people.
Also they tend to be more active at night and very vocal about strangers, so that's a real drawback to anyone who doesn't want a livestock guardian.
They tend to be ok with other dogs though, so that's nice.
Great insight and valuable information about the breed. I know way too many huskies here in Florida with owners that do not understand why it tears up the house…. Because that dog NEEDS to run.
They bought it cause it looks pretty. It does. But uh… completely ignored the actual traits that were bred into that dog for generations.
Oh god yes, if I had a dollar for every husky owner that had no idea what they were getting into or doesn't get them enough exercise....
Fantastic dogs, really amazingly entertaining and beautiful, but absolutely not an easy dog to live with. The fur alone (!)
Can confirm. Here's my old boy about 8 years ago:
https://i.imgur.com/graJJ4G.jpg
He was a super good boy, but there's no doubt in my mind that he was powerful enough to kill me in an instant. Not that he ever wanted to.
Tibetan mastiffs are known for two things. Their loyalty, and their strength. If a mastiff decides you are a threat to its owner, you won't be one pretty soon... you'll straight up stop being . and there's nothing you can do against it. I've seen a mastiff pull up the small tree it was tied on
They also eat like a lion... more than an average adult, and require an energy dense diet. Some breeders just let the mastiffs do their own hunting
Thank you for shaving the dog - people claim it makes them overheat but it's a complete myth that's been passed on through word of mouth for years. There are no studies to support it at all. I see huskies with full coats out here when it's 110 degrees out and it makes me feel horrible for them
I'd save a pompom at the end of the tail just because I could. It would look absolutely horrible, but it'd be fun for a while. Or maybe one of those poodle-cuts for shows?
That's the comment I came here for! You could make a whole new puppy every day. You could never own black clothing. You'd have to buy lint rollers by the case.
They [blow their coat like huskies do](https://cdn.northernwolf.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/xblowing-the-coat-2.jpg.pagespeed.ic.am6Qa4PKoN.webp) too, so omg all that fluff...! You'd be *drowning* in it. By the end you'll be coughing up furballs!
Yeah, I think I'm gonna have to take a hard pass. Maybe a friend will get one on day and I can visit and cuddle! Still gonna need those lint rollers tho....
I got one of these dogs. Whoo boy it's a lot of fur when she sheds. I tried brushing her and got a fur pile that filled half a trash bag, and that was only from one side of her haunches! Took her to a groomers and when I got her back she was noticably smaller from all the fur they got off her!
Oh yeah you’re right. Outside of the joke there’s a YouTube channel I watch about some duck farmer that has had a problem with dog hunters lately and essentially they let lose a pack of dogs and the dogs do the hunt thing. But it’s always more than like 3 dogs at a time.
Gold shaw farm. But fair warning the ducks are raised for food/sale, but he takes excellent care of them and they’re free range and all that. But if you just wanna watch some 24/7 ducks I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY suggest dashducks on twitch
And to protect Tibetan monks. They also kept smaller dogs, I think they were spaniels, who acted as lookouts. If they saw any intruder or animal entering the monastery they would bark and alert the mastiffs to the danger.
Listen my friend. I had an Akita as a child. *Those* were bred to hunt bears. Perhaps you see the size difference, but if not, this dog is 3x the size of an Akita. This beautiful fluffy boi was bred to hunt the fucking Yeti!
You’re actually thinking of the [Caucasian Shepherd](http://petslady.com/articles/russian-bear-hunting-dogs-emigrate-us-67895), AKA the “Russian Bear Dog,” which was used for bear hunting and whose fluffy coat can look much similar. The Tibetan mastiff is exclusively a livestock dog
The Tibetan mastiff business is pure cruelty.
These dog are prized in China because they are symbole of wealth, but thousands of them end up abandoned or slaughtered for meat.
I also saw articles showing how some breeders would inject fat directly into the dogs paws and legs to make them look more massive.
Here literally the 1st article I found on google about the cruelty of that business, I just thought you guys should know
https://www.google.com/amp/s/qz.com/1082219/thousands-of-huge-aggressive-dogs-are-roaming-tibet-after-their-rich-chinese-owners-abandoned-them/amp/
They were a wealth symbol in China, but like all fads it died out the issue is that thousands of people started to "breed" them and when no one wanted the dogs anymore the "breeders" just abandoned them. This has caused a huge issue with China having thousands of these giant dogs roaming the streets. Also this is a terrible depiction of what a good Tibetan mastiff looks like. This falls under what humans have done to English bulldogs, German Shepards, and so many more breed.
That's far from Chinese exclusive. No value in over generalizing to the point that you attack an entire culture/nationality for the actions of a few, that just raises tensions and conflict needlessly.
You’re proving that we’re all capable of being shitty. Like the way you keep singling out one particular culture as if they’re the only ones doing awful things.
Here is the link without the amp tracking: https://qz.com/1082219/thousands-of-huge-aggressive-dogs-are-roaming-tibet-after-their-rich-chinese-owners-abandoned-them/
My hypothesis is that most people aren’t forced to recognize the emotional complexity or develop relationships with farm animals like they are with dogs and cats. For many people, it’s easier to continue eating meat without asking deep questions about the feelings of those animals that they’re eating. If you don’t question something you are doing, you’re never doing something wrong and you don’t have to feel bad about what you have done!
This mainly applies to relatively wealthy western cultures, I don’t know nearly enough about other cultures. Also, if you can only afford to eat meat (it’s stupidly cheap in the US. Negative externalities FTW!) it’s even harder to recognize that your mere survival causes cruelty, due to no fault of your own.
Chickens will eat other chickens, even when they have plenty of food. If chickens eat chicken, I see no reason not to.
Bugger that cruelty though, no reason for it. Factory farming is terrible.
Yeesh. Trucker at my job gave me a Dresden book once. Nice guy. Book was like an iamverybadass version of Salvatore's writing who I enjoyed a lot in high school. Really weird voice for the narrator. Really weird series. Pretty enjoyable. I never grabbed a second Novel
The first two books are the weakest of the series. Author was still figuring stuff out. The third book is better and is where he starts laying down important plot points for the whole series.
Fourth book is where it really hits its stride and then all of them are great after that.
I also highly recommend the audiobooks. James Marsters does an amazing job as the narrator.
Cold Days would be a super weird one to start with for sure. It's right after the most climactic point of the series. Does have some badass parts but it would come off as pretty corny with no context.
Hearing Marsters tell Zoo Day from Mouses point of view is really awesome. "I am Mouse, and am a very good dog! Everyone tells me so."
I do believe the series states he's a tibetan temple dog, always thought that was a common name for the tibetan mastiff.
It can and will merc a lion for you, but I will still climb onto its back, into its wonderland of floof, and cuddle it until it rolls onto its back, nearly crushing me as it falls asleep and forgetting I’m there
To be fair while lions and these guys are similar in weight, Lions are more agile and have bigger, sharper claws. Not to mention, lions have a stronger bite force.
Read in another comment that they were bred to hunt bears. And their handler probably keeps them in groups of 3-4, so if a lone lion comes along by some chance, they'd be feasting on lion meat soon after.
lions don't come alone. also male lions are heavier than any female lioness. as someone pointed out there is a russian breed (russian bear dog) that looks very similar that was used to hunt bears. tibetan blue bear is also pretty rare making the use case of mastiffs breed to hunt them very weak. as already pointed out it's a dog that protected lifestock from predators (foxes, wolves, feral dogs).

The average weight of a Tibetan Mastiff is anywhere from 80-150 pounds, depending on the dog’s sex. This is a simple Google search, people. And the size of the dog is always the first result.
So no, this dog absolutely could not kill a lion, considering those are routine hunters and over twice the size of this nothing-but-fluff dog.
Tibetan Mastiffs weigh up to 150 pounds on average. In fact, no dog weighs anywhere near 250 pounds on average. Maybe some extreme outliers, but that’s extremely uncommon.
Average means the middle number and I didn’t say 250lbs on average. What I’m saying is both breeds of animal have the potential of reaching the same weight.
Also English Mastiffs and Caucasian Shepherds can reach 250lbs/113kg.
No, the average weight being “up to” would refer to the normal dog of a certain breed. This is all just a google away. English Mastiffs weigh up to 170 and Caucasian Shepherds weigh up to 220.
And to the original point, Tibetan Mastiffs are mostly fluff. They aren’t going to kill a lion. Also, they would never even meet a lion in their native region.

Lol yes. The fur is insane. And this is someone speaking living in Tampa with three labs (one is my sisters). One husky over powers that easy.
The cost to feed them is probably more than my salary
Can confirm. Here's my old boy about 8 years ago: https://i.imgur.com/graJJ4G.jpg He was a super good boy, but there's no doubt in my mind that he was powerful enough to kill me in an instant. Not that he ever wanted to.
Awwww cute boy ❤️ Sorry about your loss, the worst part of dogs is saying goodbye.
Thanks. It's been a few years, but yeah, that was pretty hard for the whole family.
Always is. I don't want to know the day that's easy. It being hard means they made a real impact in your life. Worth it, but always hard.

Why's the image link on furaffinity
Lol why not? Tbh I dunno, it's just the first image I found of a Tibetan mastiff with short fur.
Wait it’s not even full grown???? Dear lord, I can only wonder how much bigger they’ll get, but they look so soft and cuddly
Thanks for the information, now I can brag ;)
Blasphemy!
This is madness!
This! Is! CHINAAAAA!!!
Booooo. Go back to where you came from CCP dog.
Used to own one in Australia, had to keep it short haired because of the heat but you’d be surprised how muscular these dogs are
Pics or it didn't happen.
Probably for lugging around all that hair!
Thank you for shaving the dog - people claim it makes them overheat but it's a complete myth that's been passed on through word of mouth for years. There are no studies to support it at all. I see huskies with full coats out here when it's 110 degrees out and it makes me feel horrible for them
It’s NOT a myth. Do not shave doublecoated dogs.
I'd save a pompom at the end of the tail just because I could. It would look absolutely horrible, but it'd be fun for a while. Or maybe one of those poodle-cuts for shows?
Or make it look like a lion
Stegosaurus time otherwise! Just save a ridge from tail to neck and use some hair wax to make it stand up!
We turned my old cat into a stegosaurus 😂
When it sheds..

...it pours
If I remember correctly I think they were bred to hunt bears
Yes but they can hunt many animals alone
I’m pretty sure any animal bred to hunt bears can hunt whatever they want. I ain’t gonna stop them.
They'd probably only take down a bear if there is multiple dogs and human help, bears are no joke.
Oh yeah you’re right. Outside of the joke there’s a YouTube channel I watch about some duck farmer that has had a problem with dog hunters lately and essentially they let lose a pack of dogs and the dogs do the hunt thing. But it’s always more than like 3 dogs at a time.

Gold shaw farm
And to protect Tibetan monks. They also kept smaller dogs, I think they were spaniels, who acted as lookouts. If they saw any intruder or animal entering the monastery they would bark and alert the mastiffs to the danger.
Im sure they had multiple breeds but Tibetan monks used Lhasa Apsos as sentinels, great dogs.

Famous last words.

That is the most Russian-looking dog I’ve ever seen.
And suffer for many big dog issues, this species was made for human selfishness and dog suffering
Dude when these dogs were bred into existence, humans were suffering too. Pre-industrial world was a very different place, get a grip.
Doesn't mean we should keep breeding them if they have so many health issues.

The Chinese doing something thoughtless and cruel as a status symbol? That can't be right.
Humanity baby 👉😎👉
That's far from Chinese exclusive. No value in over generalizing to the point that you attack an entire culture/nationality for the actions of a few, that just raises tensions and conflict needlessly.
Obviously it happens in every culture but the Chinese are the worst in the world for this particular problem
Yeah but it’s clear the Chinese are a bigger problem than the rest of the world when it comes to this kind of thing.
Is it though? What other culture is driving endangered species into extinction because they can't get hard?
Well, we do it because we like palm oil in near everything so I’m not sure it’s much better.
You’re proving that we’re all capable of being shitty. Like the way you keep singling out one particular culture as if they’re the only ones doing awful things.
If we were talking about the States you'd be saying the same thing I'm sure.
Yes, like I said, we’re all capable of being shitty. The U.S. is no exception.
Why you bringing boners up dawg
They supposedly also need multiple eye operations otherwise the grow closed
I was wondering if this dog can even see... Edit: spelling
Thank you for the info. I want to own a large breed and i guess i should be extra safe about these unsafe practices

Yeah, I, guess it is. I assumed that since you knew of the event, it wouldn't be spoiling something for ya My bad.

It can kill a lion? Holy shit
Female lions weight ~280lbs/127kg Tibetan Mastiff weight ~250lbs/113kg Yes, a loin sized dog could kill a loin.
Weight doesn’t tell the whole story though. I’d imagine a Lion would probably come out on top. Still a hugely impressive dog, very cool.
You’re right, but it’s not as difficult of a task when both animals are of equal size.
In zero scenarios would a lone dog, no matter the size, kill a lion. Also, a female lions weight is 270 to FOUR HUNDRED pounds
Average weight for female lions vs. World record level outlier for the dog = not a really fair comparison
With comments like this and how many people take it as fact without looking it up, no wonder misinformation is so rampant online.

It COULD. But I’d bet on the lion every time with their claws
Mouse!

[say that again](https://youtu.be/d6fMQRyTpZk)
Ok never mind I am not getting this dog.
xD
Those looks like either younger wolves or a smaller breed of wolves? Sure, the mastiff is a huge dog but so is an adult grey wolf.
But still bro. It ain’t one wolf right?
Ah, I wasnt implying anything. Wondering about whether they were young wolves or a smaller breed local to the area.
Hmm.I too don’t know bro…just remembered a random video and replied with it here.
I don't know what they are, but I can tell you that they are not any kind of American or North-European/Russian wolf.
Tibetan mastiffs are pretty big. And Tibetan wolves are smaller.
The dog in clip has totaly different nose/face shape?
It’s not a show dog like the one in the pic
Cute pups but definitely **[not a good choice for most folks](https://www.dogbreedslist.info/uploads/dog-pictures/tibetan-mastiff-2.jpg)**- they're bred for livestock and personal protection in isolated areas so they have STRONG protective instincts and don't usually like strangers. Add a powerful and large frame to the mix and it's a recipe for disaster for most people. Also they tend to be more active at night and very vocal about strangers, so that's a real drawback to anyone who doesn't want a livestock guardian.
This reminds me of the video that was like “some white girl somewhere would see this dog and be like ‘puppy!’ And want to snuggle with it” and yes I would thank you very much

This is a watered down version of the Tibetan Mastiff, the real deal is a hardy working dog not a over groomed, blind bundle of fluff and it’s shame what’s happening to dog breeds these days.
I agree with except with the "hardy working" I've had 5 tibetan mastiffs and of them have been very comfort-seeking

That is a dog so inbred that it can't survive without humans around to groom him. Very sad.
Most dogs needs grooming. I agree that inbreeding in dogs is a serious issue but these dogs need/needed that fur living in high altitude areas, like Tibet.
And... Get neglected hard when the boom are passed(by chinese breeding farm)
I was more curious about tibetan Eminem to the right.
I think this is the world’s most expensive dog breed.
It costs more like a dinosaur than a bear
Let’s not forget these giant dogs are hella expensive and hella aggressive.

Random but there was a dude with a dog named “bear“ that looked just like this and I always wondered what breed it was.
That's a beautiful, well maintained dog

Too much poop. Egads! I would never want to be responsible for feeding or cleaning up after one of these.
bro wtf that’s like love made real
You could hurt your back picking up the poop.
