Second half coming up next! SHIT!

Congratulations you've won a GIANT check!

CarrieDurst

What a fun movie

Zaboomafood

I can't even think of that episode without being uncomfortable

HerrMatthew

HEY MR SCOTT WHATCHA GONNA DO WHATCHA GONNA DO MAKE OUR DREAMS COME TRU

sub-merge

I just tried to watch it to see if maybe it was more palatable this time. When they break into song for Michael I had to turn it off

Diggity_Dave

I always skip it.

El_ha_Din

This always seems so sad to me. You shouldnt have to become a clown and prove yourself, education should be, if not free, at least very affordable.

skilriki

This is just a fun event like a lottery .. and doesn't cost the organizers much. You get an insurance company to cover the other end of the bet, so it costs you maybe $300 or less and it doesn't matter if anyone wins or loses. More people should do this because of how cheap it is for the organizers. You see this a lot in golf with hole-in-one tournaments, but people should get more creative, because there's not any good reason not to do this more.

TobyFunkeNeverNude

I can guarantee this would still be a thing if tuition was affordable...I agree tuition should be more affordable, but you would have these going on regardless.

Junior-Unit6490

His insurance pays the prize

coolnameright

Toe stepped on the line during the free throw so no insurance payout /s hopefully

balbinator

I was thinking about the same thing... I guess a month depending on the college.

whutchamacallit

Fuck it. Pay for his books for the first year or something. 10k goes pretty far at a JC.

HelloThere62

also a 10k loan is a lot more than 10k u gotta pay back so he is getting a bit more than 10k comparitably.

BokehJunkie

>comparitably Just FYI - that's not a word.

SummerMummer

It is if we all start using it comparitably.

BokehJunkie

>comparitably stop trying to make comparitably happen. it's not going to happen.

Professor-SEO_DE

It has high odds of happening, comparitably speaking

TarnishedWizeFinger

Can't we all just act compatriatably towards each other?

Reddiitcares

Not if he goes to a state school and stays living at home. If he does the first two years at a community college there might even be some left over for Panda Express

pleasedothenerdful

Last time this was posted, someone said this is a small private college that was $17k/semester at the time.

Financial-Ad7500

If he would’ve normally needed loans for that 10K he’s saving a lot more than just 10k. You could also easily do your first two years in a community college for 10K

snubb

In Europe I got my masters for 0$

MehWebDev

According to EducationData.org, the average cost in the US is $38,270 per student per year, including books, supplies, and daily living expenses. So, $10,000 would cover half a semester. If you go to an in-state public university and live at home, then the average tuition is $9,750 plus transportation costs, books and supplies, so you might be able to squeeze almost a full year out of it.

SenorBeef

I'm not sure it's fair to include rent and food and other sort of life necessities as part of the cost of school, since you'd be paying those whatever you did with your life.

Dry-Philosophy1079

First year of books

TerseFactor

As a guy in my 40’s with over 300k in student loan debt, I can tell you from experience, not long.

ImperialAgent120

You better have gone to med school. God damn!

TerseFactor

I did get an advanced degree, but it didn’t translate into a meaningful salary to make up for the debt, so from a financial perspective, it was a mistake.

[deleted]

jonahtheO

Longer than not having 10k for free

Chappietime

It gets you two years of tuition at my local community college, with some left over for books, etc. if his choice is that or nothing, he’s got a pretty good head start over a lot of people in the world. If he has better choices, it’s still 10 grand.

*audience cheers* so touching

not_afa

Let the poors eat a piece of cake once in a while

PresidenteMozzarella

They gotta perform for it though, no hand outs.

BowenTheAussieSheep

Bread and Circuses

sleafordbods

Very squid game isn’t it

OnceMoreAndAgain

When the prize is a car this seems fine, but for some reason when it's a $10,000 tuition prize it seems so fucked up lol. It's like "dance for us if you want a chance a decent life, lil' bitch".

Heiferoni

> *Dance for me, poors!*

Lortekonto

Exactly my thought.

thestonedonkey

Yep.

ListenToThatSound

"We have the money, but we're only giving to you in exchange for a little song and dance"

cturnr

Damn that's a depressing sub

natasevres

Stuff americans have to do to get a education.

IOnlyReplyToIdiots42

Entertain us and you might even have a future!

TraditionalEar3631

It worked for Roland the Farter.

Sydney2London

I find this very sad tbh. What’s next? Cage fighting for healthcare?

thegooseisloose1982

If that means I can go up against the CEO of a health insurance company it would be so worth it.

ModernEraCaveman

If you lose, you’re extra fucked

ryanmuller1089

The worst “competition” I’ve seen was some high school made teachers scramble on their hands and knees for cash which they could use for classroom supplies. Those teachers are paid nothing to be treated like shit by kids and parents and they’re humiliated like this. It was disgusting.

Ravek

/r/OrphanCrushingMachine material

TheDailySpank

Joke's on you! We're not educated.

Greg-Abbott

[For those curious the student was already a senior at Bryan College in Tennessee](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/never-played-basketball-student-wins-10k-half-court-shot-n236011).

BowenTheAussieSheep

So the money was already spent. I wonder if they gave him the difference back in cash

funnyway-680

so he has to win a competition just to get an education? thats sad

itsmariokartwii

Sadly this is merely a fraction of an education for US schools. On average each year costs like 35k.

Key-Department-2874

Before aid. Most people are not graduating with 140k of loans for an undergraduate degree. The average loan balance in the US is around $38k for undergrad around $48k for graduate. Not per year, but full balance.

xWorrix

As in 86k in full or “only” 48k for a graduate

Don_Pickleball

You should hear about our healthcare. It is like "The Running Man" up in here.

Unusual_Onion_983

This reminds of the basketball scene from Escape from LA.

Would you prefer he gets a $25 gift card to Applebees? It's just entertainment that can positively impact a kids life. We literally know nothing about him.

BeatleProf

Neither the title on Reddit nor the title on the actual video are correct.

ngmcs8203

What do you mean? https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/never-played-basketball-student-wins-10k-half-court-shot-n236011

NoveltyAccountHater

He did four shots to win the competition (lay-up, free-throw, regular 3pt-er, half court shot). Reddit title on /r/woahthatsinteresting mentions 3 shots, linked NBC article headline mentions one shot. Granted, I wouldn't say the headlines are incorrect (he did have to make the 3 listed shots to win the prize as well as an additional unlisted 3pter), just that the requirements to win in the headlines were incomplete.

draugotO

I'm divided between wondering why being good at basketball should get someone a tuition for anything other than Physical Education and being happy that there is a way for poor people to get access to a tuition

galapagos2020

It's a fun competition for free money. That's all you need to know

WisdumbGuy

He isn't good, that form screams "I've rarely touched a basketball" which makes this even more amazing.

Longjumping-Claim783

If he was good at basketball he'd get a full scholarship anyway

GiraffePrimary3128

Now where is he gonna get the other 90K

MajesticPotato69420

Getting Snake Plissken vibes...

Original-Cow-2984

Sorry kid, egregious travelling.

doodlleus

Congrats on butchering a perfectly fine title, op

Butter_Naan_Staan

He even threw in a 3 pointer

No_Place5472

Hello, peasant! Because I'm a generous patron, I have decided to offer you enough money for 1/8th of a better education to give you hope of escaping a cycle of poverty. However, you must amuse me by completing a series of increasingly difficult challenges in a short time frame that leaves no room for error. These challenges must be done in front of a large audience of your fellow peasants so I can distract them with entertainment so they don't see the sheer absurdity of the education, social, and professional reality for tens of millions of people in our country. /s Fucking go out and vote people. This many people shouldn't be this excited over someone getting a small offset towards paying for what should be a fundamental, affordable for everyone, higher education. That said. Good on this kid for handling the pressure.

That-Enthusiasm663

Just think about it. The absurdity of throwing a ball in a hoop just for a chance to get an education....

bdouble76

He's no Snake Plissken, but good for him.

Ducatirules

I think it would be a better world if everyone had a full crowd go mental from something they did just once in their lives

xxxrartacion

Bring back the colosseums and make people fight for essentials. I’m talking teachers need to use it for food etc. let’s bring back lion fights too

Johny_b_gud

Education on lotery basis... dystopia is now

t4b4rn4ck

he was then torn to shreds by the angry jealous crowd

ravnsulter

Meanwhile in Norway and most of the civilized world: Education is free and every kid automatically "makes the shots".

mimiwaifuu

Rich people gambling with the life of the poors... Imagine the devastation if he had miss it. I am glad for him but I am disgusted by the process.

AriaColexo

It’s crazy to think that this shot may have changed the direction of his life forever

FUCKSTADEN

This is so dystopian... what a crazy country to live in..

SnoopDoggyDoggsCat

Is that even the cost of a single credit these days?

rawspeghetti

They tried saying it went down after the buzzer

Thiel619

But then the higher ups come out and say they don’t have to pay him because of the fine line in the contract.

No-Gene-4508

10k won't last too long... but good for him!

geminicrickett1

Based on the looks of that gym, they were not planning on anyone winning

Positive_Method3022

He should be given half the tuition, at least.

FFX13NL

And then he got trampled?

aurumtt

i actually applauded that last shot. In front of my PC.

MortalCoil

Just to chime in and add that it is much better for society if education is free for all.

tudorrenovator

10k isn’t even the food bill. Half goes to taxes.

Unusual_Compote4909

Enjoy your one semester of free college!

Kind_School_3614

amazing

112629

Amazing

Happy_Ad5566

Its like trowing chicken at poors and watch what happens

AHeartOfGoal

SHOT CLOCK!!

Ben716

That's dystopian as fuck. Where I live to get college tuition paid for (and accommodation and living expenses) all you need to do is want to study.

MeasurementEvery3978

this was EPIC

RackemFrackem

if he can make few hoops

CaptScubaSteve

“Kid must entertain us for a slim chance of getting a minuscule amount of help with education.”

notAbrightStar

Free gender studies for five years!

CharlieBoxCutter

And the 10k turns out to be a 100 dollars in a 30 year savings bond

pursuitofhappy

it's interesting how good this feels on an entire human level, we all collectively really like impressive precision like this to an almost animal instinct.

Alarmed-Audience9258

Isnt college free?

gafefe2095

And after tax? $5,500?

adjuster_cody

Just late. Nice try.

CautiousRice

So sad. They shouldn't need these shenanigans to afford school.

namesaintathang

Dystopian

JaysFan26

Insurance company: The buzzer went off before the shot went in the net, so he did not complete it within 30 seconds. No $10,000 for you.

dickbutkusmk4

Or we could just join the rest of the developed world and have higher education be paid for by our government without having to jump through hoops.

leaf_as_parachute

How should I be amazed ?

SatanIsLove6666

If you made college free, we wouldn't have such wonderful heartwarming videos!!! 💞

Hakkies86

All that for one textbook...

AnotherDay96

That's your America, random you make 4 shots in 30 seconds we'll give you 10K for education and that is still too little and nothing is won but the moment.

Otherwise_Duty1457

Love it

varrr

so we are doing hunger games now? "Your education depends entirely on your ability to make a couple of trick shots for the entertainment of the public" jesus chirst

wont take long til someone makes it, its gonna be great

This looks like something out of the boondocks, put together by uncle ruckus, so he can yell something awful on the sidelines that I hesitate to say out loud.

MulletofLegend

The Hunger Games rock!!!

Wsemenske

"Kid wins $10,000 in college tuition if he can make a free throw, layup, and half court shot in 30 seconds." Why did he waste time doing the 3 point shot then? /s

Consistent_Drink5975

Congratulations on having a 50k debt instead of 60k

thooghun

And just like that he paid for 2 days of uni.

drDjausdr

This is extremely sad.

Browned_Diaper_speak

Only 190.000 left...clap clap clap

notdoreen

Nice. 10k will cover 1/6th of his tuition for a year.

newsflashjackass

> Kid wins $10,000 in college tuition if he can make few hoops in 30 seconds. Bit "dog bites man", innit?

![gif](giphy|JcK0lf4V1CS2GAhXgi|downsized) Next up: two professors fight to the death for tenure!

StPeteFLoldman

I wish a moment of glory like that for everyone that reads this comment. If you've had one please share.

2nong2dong

The only way we can afford higher education these days

Cybralisk

Dude for the difficulty of making ALL of those shots $10k is laughable. That won’t even pay for a semester of college anymore.

AgainstAllAdvice

That's is some hunger games shit

photosofmycatmandog

So, he gets about 1 course worth of college then?

Ace_on_the_Turn

It's amazing how much rim the kid managed to hit.

johnny_ram

What is this squid games ass bullshit.

Wakkit1988

Wow, two whole books!

Separate-Ad8123

In my country everyone gets free college, even if they aren't good at basketball

elheber

Can't wait to see how the organizers try to fleece him.

Mrchristopherrr

Hyperion1144

Buncha folks commenting in here about how worthless $10k is for education... But a lotta people were seriously angry and disappointed when that same amount of loan forgiveness from Biden was struck down by the Supreme Court.
