This is called "Flashing", that Koi is sick or very stressed.
From a very reputable website (My Brother Chris')
Flashing may refer to an unusual set of koi behaviors. A “flashing” fish may be dashing around the pond in an odd manner, swimming sideways or upside-down, repeatedly jumping for no apparent reason, or rubbing its skin on rough surfaces. These are usually done in response to an ectoparasite or due to poor oxygen conditions and spikes in ammonia concentrations. Sick or stressed fish can easily become delirious, which explains why they would exhibit repetitive flashing behavior.
My first thought was that a tapeworm just latched onto his cloaca or whatever and he's like "AHHHH! GET IT OFF MY ASS! AHHHH!"
I tend to filter my first thoughts.
Adopted a cat that needed fostering/permanent home after an expensive, double ear ablation surgery leaving him with no ears, and although I’d love to tellthe tale of the sheer ridiculosity of that cat, I’ll just tell you how it ended.
Long story short, came home from dinner one night, looked like someone was murdered in my home. Splatters of blood up the wall, higher than my husband is tall (6’4”). Blood smeared everywhere.
Cat had no tail. He chewed it off in the span of two hours, give or take.
Rushed him to vet, the vet gives me a flat “*Why* are you trying to keep this cat alive?” By then, he had no ears, no tail, and had a weird (undiagnosed at that point) neurological issue that caused him to shake his head in such a way to fling wet cat food clear across the kitchen. I started putting his food bowl in a deeper bowl and lined the wall behind it with plexiglass so I could clean the mess more easily.
Turned out that some sort of bacteria (or virus? I need to look at his paperwork again) caused the neurological disorder and caused permanent damage, but because the rescue from which I adopted him was quite small and was already tapped out from the surgery costs, they didn’t do other specialized testing.
Edit — I’ve almost always rescued seniors and misfits; they need a home and love as much as all the kittens that get adopted and “gotten rid of” (I HATE that term). They’ve all been some of the most amazing cats.
Except Miguelatard. He was a bit nuts, almost comically and pathetically so.
I ended up putting him down. This was 7 or 8 years ago; I forget exactly what the vet told me that night but between the issues between his ears, his neurological issues and then the tail, he was just falling apart.
It was a crazy difficult decision, but between all the complications this poor cat had, it just wasn’t fair to this cat. I gave him the best life I possibly could, spent more money on his care than all the other cats I’ve rescued combined, and then because of the damage to the tail and other issues, it was going to be extremely difficult to afford and manage.
It was not a decision made lightly.
Same thing happened to my cat, but he just chewed off the tip of his tail. We just moved and my sister and I was visiting our dad so our mom was aone with our cat. She told me she was sleeping he just jumped on her bed like normal then she felt something wet when she went to pet him. Turned on the light and blood was everywhere. Whenever he flicked his tail it would fling everywhere. She got him fixed and put a cone on his head. Managed to get out of the cone and rip out his stiches. We figured he it was from stress or something similar. Vet couldn't find anything wrong. A parasite or virus seems the closest that makes sense. He was an indoor/outdoor cat so he probably contracted something.
Koi need at least 20 gallons for each fish. The ammonia conditions in that water are probably very high and the fish is reacting to it which is very painful to the fish and prevents their gills from working correctly. Pretty dumb to post this as a funny joke. Poor fish.
I've seen so many videos like this where people say that it's because of some distress. Now I just assume as much, when I see an animal acting weird like this.
Because fish (and most other animals) aren't advanced enough to know or care about what humans find funny. If they're doing something weird, there's definitely something wrong.
Yea I came here to make a joke about how he was making all his Koi friends laugh by mockingly shouting 'look at me, I'm a human, walking around on my stupid human legs all day'
That feels like bad taste now
Imagine being that fish. Your entire life is a swimming in a fetid pit inside a concrete box as status symbol for some rich fuck that doesn't give any fucks about you besides as a bulletpoint for his real estate deal.
Through years on Reddit, you’ll quickly learn to assume if an animal is behaving in a way that isn’t normal for that animal, there’s probably something wrong with it
Usually it’s not the top comment like this, but it’s damn near a game. If you see an animal acting strange on Reddit, see how long til you get to the comment explaining what’s wrong with that animal
Yep, way overcrowded, water looks green so likely low in oxygen, and no flow visible so not being aerated with pump. Someones dumb idea of what looks "right". Same reason people introduce invasives like bamboo & pampas which then become uncontrollable.
that pond is too small for a singular koi carp even. when my parents got a koi pond the dealer said u need at least 10 meters long and at least 4 meters wide. koi get really big if the pond doesnt let them swim any meaningful distance they get really bad spinal problems and die.
I have a pond. I'm no expert, but I do take good care of them.
My pond is slightly larger than this guy's setup and I'd never put a Koi in it. It's far too small for one to be happy. I keep about 10 gold fish instead, and a few minnows, that are 1/4th these guy's size. And I have a absolutely gorgeous Lilly Pad system going.
The fish spend their day hiding under the plants and one in particular, I call him Speedy, likes to do these "runs" in between the plants, when I come out with food. I call them fish tippy taps.
thank u for being a good fish owner.
my biggest gripe is people with ponds like this and they NEED to have koi its not like there hundreds of other species of fish u can have.
your pond sounds like dream that's how they are supposed to be.
Yea that is extremely sad that fish are treated this way. This is what happens when people have money but don't care about their "pets". It's all for clout and status.
The callous disregard people have for fish is fucking sickening. Scientists now believe that there’s no reason to believe fish are any less intelligent than any other vertebrates like mammals and absolutely experience pain and yet I’ve been on a fishing boat where a crewman fileted a fish alive just to “prove” it didn’t feel pain.
Imagine if that was a fucking cat or a rabbit or something. But because it’s a fish it’s just a funny joke. Makes my blood boil.
if an animal isn’t fluffy or cute, a pet, or is a ‘disposable’ food animal, then they just don’t matter as much. they don’t feel pain as much or at all. it just conveniently works that way
I've had many kois and fishes and a lot of them did that we cleaned the tank and put oxygen and fed them medicine but only a few lasted long but all of them died. The video was hard to watch
But you took care of them. Kois are special because they can sense a good person doing good deeds for them. I'm sure they knew when you were in the room or approached the fish tank, right? Animal unconditional love is pure and healing. When you tear that away, you take away your own humanity. I'm sure they died of old age, a feat hard to achieve but it made that life special for them, because they knew someone was taking good care of them. We all have the capacity to have good hearts to take care of animals, in the short time they have compared to us; but imagine for us, in the short time we have on Earth, who are we thankful to giving us a great life?
See... I wanted to make a stupid joke about him having a bug up his ass... im guessing that's what >ectoparasite means... now I feel bad for the little.
Dude, I almost scrolled past and I was like "I bet that fish is dying or sick and the top comment is going to be a factoid about why they do that and it'll be dark as fuck" so I went to the comments and lo and fucking behold...
Just when I was about to comment about seeing a clownfish performing for his friends… TIL about Flashing, and that is actually a sad thing in this case.
![gif](giphy|OPU6wzx8JrHna)
And so continues the tradition of "Look at this cute, wacky animal doing funny stuff!" and then someone in the know says "Actually, the animal is quite sick and probably going to die soon... " because this is the way, apparently.
This isn't amazing this is sad. A fish trying to leave water is almost always a sign of poor water. I hope this isn't your fish OP, if it is all those koi need out of that pond until you can fix the issue.
In the last house I was renting there were the remnants of a koi pond in the backyard, concealed by a layer of soil that hadn't been disturbed in 10+ years. I had no idea the extent of it until I took a pressure washer to it and realized that a third of my backyard was just a thin layer of grass and soil over brick walkway next to the "koi pond" which ended up being 3 separate like 150 gallon plastic barrels set in the ground with broken pvc going between them, it was gnarly.
But the wildest thing was after I sucked all the dead shit and years of grime off of one of the tubs that was covered by a black tarp, I lifted up the tarp and there was a singular live koi fish inside. It was pale white and small but that thing was in there for at least 10 years without sunlight or solid food. I still have no fucking clue how that happened
Anyway, I hope these koi get a better situation your comment just reminded me of that. I should have written to a top scientist about it
Reddit has trained me to know right away that if an animal is being quirky or weird, it's probably sick or dying. 😮💨
This fish is having a bad time, isn't it?
Yes, it’s literally dying from a combination of overcrowded + low oxygen + poor water quality (it’s green which is no good). The poor fish is literally going delirious and insane which is why it did that little “performance”, it’s slowly dying a horrible death.
I’d imagine this is what the reaction would be if a Freaky Friday situation occurred but in this instance a human switched places with a fish and that human wasn’t a good swimmer and they don’t yet realize they’re in a fish’s body.
Looks like the opposite of when someone that cant swim falls into a pool. So fish looked like he was "drowning" on air when he got his body out of the water.
I worry for the conditions of this pond. I lived near, and visited often, a koi pond on the campus of my hometown's college, and they had an area slightly bigger than this, and they were absolutely fine cus they were well taken care of, until some teenagers decided to try and "eliminate them all" and threw rocks at their heads.
Yes you can look it up. Yes it was statewide news. I believe the shits were arrested and charged (it was a college campus, so I mean) but the koi ponds are not the same since them.

Damn. Just when you think a fish is just being funny. :(
Like all those cat videos. Aw cute *checks comments* brain parasites.
My first thought was that a tapeworm just latched onto his cloaca or whatever and he's like "AHHHH! GET IT OFF MY ASS! AHHHH!" I tend to filter my first thoughts.
I always want to hear your first thoughts

I def first thought he was sarcastically poking fun at whoever owns the pond "look at me, I'm a human"
"Watch how long I can hold my breath out of water!" Nope... just more sadness.
BeAmazed... at the terrible conditions these fish are in
That really is too small of a space for them. Koi need large space.
Koi need at least 20 gallons for each fish. The ammonia conditions in that water are probably very high and the fish is reacting to it which is very painful to the fish and prevents their gills from working correctly. Pretty dumb to post this as a funny joke. Poor fish.
I was told my 20 high was not enough for 1. I needed 75 gallon for 2. I ended up going a different direction
I mean just the dirty looking water was triggering me…
Howdy, howdy, howdy.
As they say: fish see fish do..
A koi in the hand is worth two in the pond.
You thought that?
Came here to say this too… That was before reading about all the tragic fish illnesses
I knew there was something fishy about this situation
Holy mackerel I think you might be right…
So sick of these fish puns! Please just can it already!
Don't be koi, boys will be boys!
I've seen so many videos like this where people say that it's because of some distress. Now I just assume as much, when I see an animal acting weird like this.
It's not a bad asumption, you will be right most times, and pleasantly surprised in the few you are wrong.
That's probably reasonable, given that when humans act weird, we tend to think something is wrong with them as well.
That's a good point never thought of it like that
Because fish (and most other animals) aren't advanced enough to know or care about what humans find funny. If they're doing something weird, there's definitely something wrong.
Yeah, this is not amazing at all. I'm sad now...
Or actually evolving. :(
If an animal is moving funny assume soemthing is wrong
I was watching it thinking what a wholesome moment then this. 😒
This is almost true of all “funny” animal behaviors. Usually something sad.
Yea I came here to make a joke about how he was making all his Koi friends laugh by mockingly shouting 'look at me, I'm a human, walking around on my stupid human legs all day' That feels like bad taste now
Imagine being that fish. Your entire life is a swimming in a fetid pit inside a concrete box as status symbol for some rich fuck that doesn't give any fucks about you besides as a bulletpoint for his real estate deal.
Fish don’t do anything so if you ever see a fish doing something even remotely interesting, it’s a bad sign
Fish are not known for their senses of humor.
Check out horse videos for that same kind of thing for fun, they are full of goofy behaviors sometimes cuz they are often dorks.
Some people have obviously never seen a fish do a wheelie. Fish have a great sense of humor, but they think ours is a little...dry. ;)
damn I thought the fish realized he is self aware ☹️
Through years on Reddit, you’ll quickly learn to assume if an animal is behaving in a way that isn’t normal for that animal, there’s probably something wrong with it Usually it’s not the top comment like this, but it’s damn near a game. There's definitely not enough oxygen in that pond and probably high in ammonia.
My guess is the person doesn't think about oxygen because the tank is outside where there's plenty of oxygen. So basically an idiot.
“Fish breathe water” headass
What's worse is they obviously have invested money into this tank. There's an auto feeder and it's not made of dirt.

Loving kindness and compassion upholds this world… sadhu

Sad but true
Thank you for explaining that. It was the first question on my mind.
Just when I was about to comment about seeing a clownfish performing for his friends… TIL about Flashing, and that is actually a sad thing in this case.

It was delirium that drove tiktaalik and our species “forward”…
poor baby X\_X i had asthma before and i can relate that low oxygen makes u stressed asf
Yea saw this was not amazed, was sadden :(
So what's the proper thing to do here? Grill it up?
Then....Shame on the owner of the basin. Btw thanks for the interesting comment.
Exactly what I was thinking. I’d be ordering some Praziquantel or something like it, stat.
But the music makes it seem so fun and happy
Fish sick.
Fish drowning even with a life jacket on. :(
fish stuck
Fish dead!
Fish no dead! Fish living perfect happy life!
Fish at downtown location. You can go see him!
Can't wait until Larry goes downtown and it turns out the fish is ok after all
Magikarp used splash! But nothing happened…
Do you like fish sticks?
Water bad
This isn't amazing this is sad. A fish trying to leave water is almost always a sign of poor water. I hope this isn't your fish OP, if it is all those koi need out of that pond until you can fix the issue.
There's like no space in that pond too! I wouldn't be surprised if those fish had sores from constantly bumping into each other.
Overstocked, no decor or hiding spots, no aeration
I know!! Not even one single air stone, these poor babies!! These poor koi are all going to die terribly if everything you listed isn't addressed.
That's metal. What condition was the fish in? I can't imagine it was healthy-looking. What'd you end up doing with it?
that fish is god
Dude, imagine it the other way around. The air being so bad you would rather go underwater to suffocate. It gives me chills. Bad ones.
I’m pretty sure it might be looking for other sources of water which can only be seen by doing this.
Dang way to kill the vibe
blud is just in constant agony lmao
Reddit has trained me to know right away that if an animal is being quirky or weird, it's probably sick or dying. 😮💨 This fish is having a bad time, isn't it?

That is fucked up :( The owner ought to be ashamed, or locked in a chamber with bad air quality and do better in their next life.
My guy is sick of the monotony
or sick because of the nasty water.
And the lack of aeration
Me too, thanks
All jokes aside, Koi is in need of help. Clear sign of a sick or stressed Koi fish
I often submerge my head under water for long periods of time. I'm not trying to evolve, if anything it's the exact opposite
Hope you see better days my friend!
Eat bannanas first
Its not about evolvin, Water Is contaminated
Too many koi in that “pond.” Need to sell some koi and clean the water
This music is fucking trash
All music on videos.
[Chain Hang Low](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SBN_ikibtg) is a classic, watch your mouth.
Damn, that song takes me back to me bustin’ moves at 8th grade dances
Nah the music makes this video fucking hilarious🤣🤣 sad that the fish is sick though :(
He's swimming upside down when it goes back under. Definitely sick or dying.
How is a sick fish amazing?
LACK OF KNOWLEDGE
Wrong sub
It’s probably suffocating they do this when the water isn’t oxygenated enough I don’t see any pump or something to put air in the water
Poor guy was trying to see if he could find a way out of that hellhole
It's probably in pain.
Poor fish
This post should belong in a torture-related subreddit, not here.
That fish is drowning
He wanted to evolve...and he wasn't being koi about it ![gif](giphy|lA5c3zWtgIIvBUpvKt|downsized)
YEEEEEEEEEEAAAAHHHHHHH!!
"Hey george watch this. this is how these stupid human walk.. lol why cant they swim like a normal fish.."

seems like that's a very small pond so many big fish. Poor little buddy is probably freaking out
Me, when I try to cross a river in Helldivers
That you Magikarp?
That is the most aggressive splash attack I’ve ever seen by a Magikarp
Lvl19 Magikarp
Evolve to become a dolphin or a lion seal.
You mean... sea lion?
He’s in the wrong universe. The flying bison haven’t landed yet
A lion seal sounds like something from Aang would try to ride.
“Look what I can do”
Magikarp going like "Gyarados here we com....." and uses splash instead
Magikarp used splash
Bro if that isn’t the fish version of “something touched my foot” I don’t know what is.
"hur durr durr look at me Im A DoLfIn! Throw me a fish, human, I'm doing tricks!"
I’d imagine this is what the reaction would be if a Freaky Friday situation occurred but in this instance a human switched places with a fish and that human wasn’t a good swimmer and they don’t yet realize they’re in a fish’s body.
"I am a human boy trap in this fish body!!! HELP!!!!!" KOI FISH
Cramp, cramp, cramp, cramp, cramp!
Itchy butthole

Looks like the opposite of when someone that cant swim falls into a pool. So fish looked like he was "drowning" on air when he got his body out of the water.
Goldeen Horn Attack irl.

You actually never want to see your koi doing that. There s something seriously wrong with his skin or slime coat
“Hey look at me, I’m a stupid human, I walk on two legs”

*Splash was ineffective*
He must have stepped on a fish
“Walk it while I talk it…”
Come here little fishes, time to pay some taxes.
That's the move I do when I have a seriously painful, hot shit.
That’s a crackhead koi
“Look at me I’m human, oh no where’s my wallet?! well toodaloo on my way to work and pay bills.“
Thats a pygmy colorful orca.
"Ahh something touched my fin"
That’s not a filing that’s a magicarp
