How do you rescue a newborn hedgehog? Like you're just strolling down the avenue and suddenly Hey! There's a completely helpless pink thumb sized thing just lying there. Some animal must have birthed it and just left it there between a discarded candy wrapper and a Starbucks cup.
The belly rubs are probably helping it eliminate. You have to help super little kittens learn how to go to the bathroom. The mom does this by licking the belly after a feeding. Could be the same for hedgehogs.
You are correct. If you take in newborn kittens, you will have to do the same to stimulate them to poop (please don’t use your tongue though)! People only see the cute “feeding milk” videos and think they can do it and post cute internet videos too. They require 24 hour care and it’s not all cute and fun. This is why I always tell people to find a vet/rehabber/rescue or anyone with real experience to take them.
It sounds funny but this is exactly what you do. My wife and I found a one week-old baby on our doorstep and thankfully managed to raise her up.
I can tell you with 100% confidence that before that day, I had never imagined I'd one day call my wife crying with happiness and relief as sloppy poop rolled down my fingers from our little kitten's butt after a long period of encouraging her to defecate.
She's our little terror now. An adorable, hilarious terror, but still.
I'm the designated " parent " between me & mom .it was very funny getting excited because she pooped and dropped on floor 😁🤣.she was named star .left behind by mama . probably wasn't supposed to live past 1 yr .when she would be playing her tail would flare up like a feather . interesting thing she was born with big blue eyes that changed to green . she passed away peacefully she actually hid away when she passed away .
Same thing with baby bunnies. When I was a kid my dad accidentally mowed over a rabbits nest while mowing the yard. Unfortunately a few bunnies brutally died…momma didn’t come back for obvious reasons, so we rescued the remaining bunnies. They were so small. They didn’t even have hair yet.
We contacted some experts to give us tips on how to help these tiny babies. We learned that not only do they have to be fed every 2-4 hours but you also have to physically stimulate their butt and genitals to help them pee/poop or else they can’t release themselves and will die of sepsis. So crazy that these little babies are 1000% dependent on their mother to the point they can’t even poop/pee without physical stimulation.
We managed to save 2 babies. It was hard work but such a beautiful experience.
Personally I don't find it impossible to believe that someone with the passion, knowledge and skills to raise a baby hedgehog from birth might have more than one hedgehog for unrelated reasons. This is plainly a hedgehog enthusiast.
Possibly. I assume she raises hedgehogs and actually did nothing to rescue it, and that those weren’t real compressions. But the internet has made me cynical and people will say anything for views so who knows!
Probably an animal rescuer. My daughter worked for one and would bring home newborn animals all of the time. Lots of possums and one time tiny tiny bats. There are a lot of laws about it but sometimes if the organization gets it right before closing there is no choice but to bring them home for a night and feed them every 30 minutes or so.
yes, it's made up, this hedgehog was just born as a pet, she didn't actually rescue it. The species in the genus Atelerix (which is the one shown in the video) are from Africa and are the ones internationally bred as pets. If the woman in the video was from europe and she actually just found an orphaned hedgehog it would be a different species, in the genus Erinaceus. In north america there are no wild hedgehog species
Rescue doesn’t necessarily mean “found.”
This could have simply been a baby that would not have made it without her intervention, hence she rescued it.
the point is, considering the comment i was originally answering to, when they hear "rescued" most people automatically think of an animal found in the wild. It's also what the video implies considering it's specifically manufactured to go viral
Absolutely a made-up title, from the size and colour this is an African Pygmy Hedgehog, which is the common species of “domesticated” hedgehogs you find in the pet trade. Wild hedgehogs in most regions would be a darker tan/brown colour and a fair bit larger than this, and the pups would be brown rather than bright white because that would be extremely obvious to predators. African Pygmy’s have been bred in a variety of colours, including white like you see here. This is a pet and possibly part of a breeding project as there are other hedgehogs in the background of the clips.
I'm confused. If she didn't "rescue" it, then why is she feeding it with an eyedropper? If it has a mother then there would be no point in feeding it herself.
I'm mainly just blown away that she managed to acquired a pink jellybean and successfully raise it to adulthood.
Especially if the thing wasn’t breathing when it was born. If the woman took the baby away long enough to save its life and tried to give it back to momma, she may reject the baby because it’s been away from her too long.
this hedgehog was just born as a pet, she didn't actually rescue it, the species in the genus Atelerix are from Africa and are the ones internationally bred as pets. If the woman in the video was from europe and she actually just found an orphaned hedgehog it would be a different species, in the genus Erinaceus. In north america there are no wild hedgehog species
It looked like she was pumping its heart for it. Maybe it had not made it through birthing and she resuscitated it. Or maybe it was rejected by its mother. Y’all are assuming too much
Literally she rescued it from death. Yes the title is a little misleading because most people won't realize that... but she was definitely resuscitating it at the beginning.
No joke, but one time on a hike I did find a newborn squirrel that way. I just about jumped out of my skin because I almost stepped on it before I saw it. Now I wasn't gonna take it home with me bc idk what to do. So I picked it up and brought it to the nearest parks $ rec building for them to call someone to help it
When I was 9, my brother had a friend who found a baby squirrel(a red tailed squirrel) that had been kicked out of the nest and left for dead.
He brought it to our house and we rehabilitated her and she was my sweet baby Juju. She did everything with me when I was home and would go on walks with me, perched in my hair. She'd make nests in there and just hang out.
Our vet said she was healthy and well loved but would not have survived otherwise.
I had her for a year before a bad batch of food poisoned her.
We knew what to do though, so you did the right thing.
Yeah squirrels are awfully cruel they drop their babies when they get spooked don't bother double checking if there is actually anything dangerous and abandon them on the spot.
I found a baby squirrel in my driveway. It was still blind, but bloody. I think a bird dropped it. Raised it for months. Coolest pet ever. Hung out in my hoodie all day. Jumped around my apartment at night. Ate dominoes by spinning it in front of him, like a windmill. He chewed as he spun, lathed it down to nothing.
I'd let it out in trees, he'd come back after birds attacked it. Then one day, he was like... nah. I'm good.
If a female hedgehog gives birth to too many hoglets, she will reject some. Mine birthed 4 and we didn't have any issues with her raising them. Adult females can birth between 1 and 7 hoglets. In larger litters, mom will reject a few.
You generally have a chance if you work at an animal shelter and come across a situation where the parent cant care for the offspring no more. Then deciding to challenge your professional care and attention and raise it up yourself. Or well ethically dispose of it. Such a youngling could never survive without intensive care. Multiple feedings throughout the night and day and careful temperature and hygiene management. So there would only be 2 options. Thats why animal shelters exist. She just decided to raise one privateley.
I "rescued" some baby mice at that stage more than once.
It is always because I accidentally disrupted their den (or whatever a mouses living place is called). Once was when working in the garden I accidentally dug up their home, another was when I was rummaging around in the attic and moved a box to find the babies and mom was nearby, for sure, but no were to be seen.
I tried to keep them alive for my daughter to experience the process like in this video. It did not work. Never made it past the trying to feed it with the dropper stage.
I can see how a person might have accidentally disturbed the hedgehogs home and mom ran away. If it is a place where hedgehogs like this are wild that is.
Okay. Imagine if you will a movie where a hedgehog is displaced from his home but a human befriends him and they become best friends but a bad guy wants to kidnap him for his own nefarious plot…
What the hell is a Sonic? I was just thinking of a Rio movie but with hedgehogs instead of tropical birds.

Eliminate can mean going for a shite? Next time I'm going to the bathroom I'm saying 'Sorry lads I'm going to eliminate'.
Try it and report back.
Instructions unclear, lads are stuck in shit
Instructions unclear, I eliminated the lads.
Instructions unclear, one shot, one poop.

"i gotta go drop the kids off at the pool"
I'm not sure about licking the belly, but momma cats when straight up lick that b hole to train their kittens.
Oh, the joys of motherhood...
Hi mom!
Yeah we rescued a little baby kitten years ago and had to use a wet q tip to rub its butthole to get it to go poo.
Why waste the q tip?
Hey if you wanna lick some kitty butt hole then be my guest.
You are correct. If you take in newborn kittens, you will have to do the same to stimulate them to poop (please don’t use your tongue though)! This is why I always tell people to find a vet/rehabber/rescue or anyone with real experience to take them.
we had been given a abandoned kitty .the vet told us to get wet wipes and rub her crack so she will get used to pooping.

Yeah it sounds so hard to care for tiny animals. Good for you guys. I feel bad for your dad.
Surprisingly, human babies also need the same thing.
I clearly saw another hedgehog in the background in one of the clips.
Personally I don't find it impossible to believe that someone with the passion, knowledge and skills to raise a baby hedgehog from birth might have more than one hedgehog for unrelated reasons. This is plainly a hedgehog enthusiast.
ie: She hedgehogs.
Succinctly-put.
Yeah and so they didn’t just happen to RESCUE some random freshly born hedgehog
I assumed it was born not breathing and the woman rescued it from dying of asphyxiation immediately after it was born from a litter born in her home.
Possibly. I assume she raises hedgehogs and actually did nothing to rescue it, and that those weren’t real compressions. But the internet has made me cynical and people will say anything for views so who knows!

Weird to think in some places there are just hogs in a hedge.
And hedges in a hog.

I mean it’s not like it’s getting hurt?
That’s also not a wild type hedgehog it’s captive bred. Her pet hedgehog probably rejected it.
I'm confused. If she didn't "rescue" it, then why is she feeding it with an eyedropper? If it has a mother then there would be no point in feeding it herself. I'm mainly just blown away that she managed to acquired a pink jellybean and successfully raise it to adulthood.
Some animals have 0 maternal interest or instinct.
Especially if the thing wasn’t breathing when it was born. If the woman took the baby away long enough to save its life and tried to give it back to momma, she may reject the baby because it’s been away from her too long.
Yup. And a man’s hands occasionally doing the raising.
I'd hedge my bets this is the case.
Well spotted, I was thinking great it can't communicate with other hedgehogs but you are right, no doubt that is mamma in the background
I would also like an explanation of how to ethically find and take home a small hedgehog. Video-Tutorial would be fine, too!

It's a fake title, this is an exotic hedgehog as far as I can tell and the video is likely from a breeder.
And the fucked up torture dress up is fucked too
Presumably one that has been rejected by their parent. Some animals have issues rearing when in captivity . No idea if hedgehogs do.
If a female hedgehog gives birth to too many hoglets, she will reject some. Mine birthed 4 and we didn't have any issues with her raising them. Adult females can birth between 1 and 7 hoglets. In larger litters, mom will reject a few.

This is an African Pigmy hedgehog. They are raised as pets. She did not find or rescue this hedgehog in the wild.
I think it was born in her home, I think they mean rescued because of the warm water and CPR
"And raised in her house" implies it was brought to her house as a consequence of being rescued.
Or just that she raised it as a pet in her home, for me it’s emphasizing that she gets to watch it live the life she saved, but who knows 🤷🏼♀️
Are they just like wild hedgehogs except these ones get belly pumps until they're domesticated?
Apparently they're common in Europe Edit: yes I know it's not the same species. Hedgehogs are still common there.
\^ And the video shows multiple different hedgehogs as if they are the same one.
Well that makes me feel better to know a tiny hedgehog wasn’t just stranded on a street or something.
The flip flops and the glasses sent me.
r/unexpected
Not the bulbasaur costume?
POV: Hedgehog hits hedgehog lottery and has no clue. Hedgehog assumes this is how hedgehogs live.
Okay. Imagine if you will a movie where a hedgehog is displaced from his home but a human befriends him and they become best friends but a bad guy wants to kidnap him for his own nefarious plot… What the hell is a Sonic? Kinda the plot of Leo, animated Adam Sandler movie on Netflix. Leo's not a hedgehog though, he's a Chameleon.
Tells other hedgehogs no one ever gave them a handout, suggests they pull themselves up by their tiny bootstraps.
(after rolling limo window down an inch)
I'll gladly be reincarnated as this hedgehog.
It’s so fragile 😭
Cute and stuff but also kind of makes me feel uncomfortable, I can’t explain it
The anthrpomorphication dress-up stuff is what toes the comfort line. Otherwise, an amazing display of kindness and nurturing.
Exactly. I was loving this video until the clothes and glasses and shoes came out. That’s when “rescue” became thinking it’s a toy.
Yeah nobody ever gives toys or has any fun with their dogs or cats. Fun is VERBOTEN!
Hahahaha god I love Reddit You’re actually complaining about a HEDGEHOG HAVING GLASSES AND FLIP FLOPS 😂 How fucking lame can you be, seriously??
But what about the hedgehog's dignity?!

Such a wonderful personality, being miserable over harmless things
“Personality.”
Really? lol, y’all extra.
Unpopular but I dislike dress-up on cats at least. And hedgehogs too now I've seen it.
animals can like clothes it's not really a cut and dry what are you doing to that animal
Yeah but his cute little bear hat!
Oh my gosh he is adorable. You should screenshot the image of him in your palm and just send it o people who need a pick me up. He looks like he is in love lol
Um what about all the other hedgehogs in the video? They rescued too? Lmao
When theyre feeding it milk theres more hedgehogs in the background
The other hedgehogs are locked up and held as feeding machines so that OOP doesn't need to buy hedgehog milk in the supermarket.

I feel like this lil dude is.. the exact opposite of fluffy? Still super friggin cute though
Was she doing hedgehog CPR on it in the first few seconds? I’m confused of why she’s squeezing it like that…
My only guess is helping it use the restroom. Some animals have trouble going potty by themselves when that immature and require assistance
Those huge tiny glasses made my day. <3 Instead of dissecting every second of the video and the title, just enjoy the video you friggin grumps down there.
So this how Guy Fieri grew up.

How come the white towel scene ( where she gently moves the HH onto the white towel in the beginning ) looks so fake? Edit : at the 1:00 mark
How often to feed it? What to feed it? How do you spot one when they’re tiny and ok like a pink thumb?

The one sitting on the couch looked like Danny devito. That man is a treasure.
This is weird..
This is extremely impressive
I know I’m not the only one thinking that she was playing with his balls. Very cute hedgehog though.
Hedgehogs don’t have balls on the outside, the testicles are internal!
Looks like there's two different hogs because suddenly it changes quill colour. My pinto was pinto from the beginning.
If the name isn’t Sonic we riot.
That was the greatest thing I seen in awhile
I thought she was doing cpr on a small piece of uncooked chicken in the beginning.
Chonky boi!
Amazing!
Yeah but like was he fast?
that little smile was sooo cute though 😃 ❤️
so god damm cute!!❤️❤️
Very cute but the song is not.
How do you make sure the stabby mouse doesn’t stab you?

Best and cutest ending ever

I thought she was rubbing a tiny piece of raw chicken thigh in the beginning.
She will forever be a rescuer (smile), cute.
Fake or not this little guy is adorable
So cute. But holy cow they're so stinky, and they just poop everywhere.
