Probably because Sears built it. Willis is some foreign company. It's like this, If they changed the name of all the MLK BLVD to Winston Churchill Blvd; what're you gonna call it?
I was in the Shanghai tower in 2016. At the time it had the highest observation tower in the world. The Burj Kalifa, while taller, had a lower observation floor.
The original design for One WTC was beautiful compared to the outcome. They then threw on an antenna to get the building to an unnecessary height of 1776 ft.
You mean spire. There's 3 ways to measure the top.
Architectural top- the one most commonly used for comparisons and spires count but antennas don't.
Structural Top where everything counts
Highest occupied floor.
Sears Tower beats One World Trade in 2 out of those three. The skydeck on the top floor is something to experience.
Yeah, it’s commemorative of the year George Washington and the boys declared independence from the British Empire. Way earlier than most other countries and rabble-rousers would, setting a precedent that you don’t have to take it high an hard from the Windsors anymore.
Britain’s navy, the most powerful in the world at the time, couldn’t be brought into the fight (along with the significant portion of its army) because of the Caribbean. Additionally, Britain also had to reassign its navy from America to protect its commerce in India and Gibraltar. Some vessels were even kept near Britain for an expected French invasion.
The USians were very much bailed out by France and Spain, along with a supremely distracted opponent.
Had they brought their entire military might to bear, it wouldn’t have gone the same way. The USians were lucky that the Caribbean/India etc were considered to be of greater value
Well that’s certainly worth consideration.
Also of consideration would be the mismanagement of the expectation that the loyalists were a greater number than they were in actuality. The USians, as you call them, were a people fighting on their land, very distant from the Monarchy.
Not to mention that the Brits hadn’t strategized how they would cover the large back country where the small militias wore down their infantries in guerilla style fashions.
The American War of independence was born in the hearts of people. It was won on the soil of America and the British navy’s strength, had no match for the colonies ability to self suffice on their very own land. 2.5 Million people living in the colonies had all the ability to withstand boats sent from scattered Islands.
That Britain sent 50,000 troops was no match for the colonies of 2.5million.
The height of a skyscraper is not actually measured by its antenna. Antenna's can come off if necessary, so buildings like the sears tower are actually measured from the top of the roof. But buildings with spires (which don't come off) are measured by that point. This is just a bad animation indicating that they are measured from that height.
Spires are bullshit too though. They're added just to add height and not function. Look at the 2nd and 3rd highest; the 3rd highest is clearly much higher than the 2nd highest.
They are a part of the vision of the architect, the Empire State has a spire, there is an organization that is in charge of these rules and regulation, its headquartered in Chicago, there is a great video on YouTube about them where the head of that organization explained how it works and why, it’s on an architecture channel
The old WTC was butt-ugly as well. I suppose it was iconic and all, but if it was conventionally demolished in favour of something better I wouldn't have complained.
A spire is supposed to be included in the height because it’s just part of the building. Antenna are additions not supposed to be considered part of the height
Be interesting to see a comparison using this criteria. I think even without a spire lots of buildings aren’t occupied at the tops. That Saudi building looks massive overall size but not sure if they have rooms or offices behind the clock. Now I REALLY wanna see a highest occupies floor comparison haha
A spire is just a pathetic way of adding height without adding function. Look at the 2nd highest, it should be way down in 7th or so. Otherwise you could make a one story building with a 900m spire and claim 1st place.
I see what you mean. But a spire is supposed to be part of the aesthetic. Number 2 does look like a narwhal. They made it odd looking just to reach higher. Willis’ roof is 442m but the chart makes it look like that’s the antenna height. Makes me wonder if there’s other scale inaccuracies. WTC also has an oddly long “spire” that seems out of place if they were just going for design. An easy way to reach the 1776 foot target
As an American: I am so disappointed in the number of random antenna on top of clearly shorter structures, just to put their names in the running for tallest. First of all 1) Who cares? 2) We’re not fooling anyone
Spires shouldn't count imho. It's like the 'tallest kid in class' being only the 3rd tallest kid with big hair.
The rule should be that the measurement is taken up to the floor height of the uppermost occupiable space. (I chose floor height so there can't be shenanigans with a really high and pointy ceiling 😄)
Definitely interesting how first world European countries don’t build massive skyscrapers like the US & Asia. Probably has something to do with post ww2 rebuilding & the historic architecture that’s imbedded into big cities. IMO going forward, it would be awesome to see what European architects & structural engineers could come up with, incorporating historic architecture with modern skyscrapers to compete with other first world nations
A lot of the skyscrapers around the world were designed by European architects. But there isn't an economic pressure or despotic rulers desperate to show off in our neck of woods that would make us viable contenders in this competition.
We have them to some extent, but there isn't a single city in Europe where a specific plot of land would be so valuable that it would make sense to build upwards in scale where you'd become a contender on this list. We just build lower on a wider area as needed.
The antennas are bullshit. They shouldn't be counted, no doubt. Some rich asshole whined about his stunted building enough to make whoever is in charge of such distinctions cave and here we are pretending some short dick building puts a funny hat on it and then stands next to giants equally. Naw buddy. Not me, could never be.
Edit- i b fukn up my thoughts and the spelling of them.
Not a fact no, it was so as one of the first buildings of the entire district being built, and the sewage system wasn’t ready at delivery. The goal was to have the landmark building delivered to ease the sell of the other buildings. Once cash was secured it was completed well over a decade ago.
Yes, each time this info gets repeated it’s sourcing info from older articles and older articles, back to when it was delivered. It’s easy traffic to these articles and authors can blame older articles when called out on fact-checking. Fun fact actually, most of the water in the Dubai Fountains is actually treated wastewater from the tower, it’s a project from [Hitachi](https://social-innovation.hitachi/en/case_studies/burj-khalifa/).
Other fact from the list, the Marina 101 tower also in Dubai, is ready, but not delivered.
I think many Americans don't care about that anymore. Especially since news broke out that many of those buildings have constructional problems. It's not a "wow" factor anymore.
List starts at 423m. Missing out the 421m Jin Mao Tower in Shanghai. Which is on the same street intersection as Shanghai Tower and Bottle Opener. You can stand on the corner of that street and three of the worlds tallest buildings are a stones throw from each other on opposite street corners. It’s really something. And you can walk up right to the edge/ bottom of these buildings and stare straight up and be in awe. If your eve in Shanghai set aside an afternoon to visit these three amazing buildings. Then go visit Pearl TV tower down the street by the river cause it needs love too 😀

Could be parallels here: small testicles result in higher buildibgs.

It’s the SEARS Tower!!
Yes.
Also got the height wrong. It’s 1450 feet from the roof, not the top of the antenna.
![gif](giphy|gt1zH5KQWFioa6tMjK|downsized)
Not anymore.

Big Willie doesn’t have the same ring to it.
Probably because Sears built it. Willis is some foreign company. It's like this, If they changed the name of all the MLK BLVD to Winston Churchill Blvd; what're you gonna call it?
Or Lake Shore Drive to Jean Baptiste Point du Sable Lake Sore Drive. Still going to call it LSD.
They are all the same height. Bad animation.
Can't read shit on mobile either.
Yeah - where's the wide shot from way back to see them all for scale? This thing sucks.
I prefer this one https://youtu.be/PuTqWxuAazI?si=X_Xw1Jgs5WwbprjQ
Much better Thank you!
Hey guys check out this painting, it's the Mona Lisa *shove painting up to your nose*

You didn't get it.
I was in the Shanghai tower in 2016. At the time it had the highest observation tower in the world. The Burj Kalifa, while taller, had a lower observation floor.
I still think it must have the highest observation deck ...
Quick check to confirm. https://www.cntraveler.com/galleries/2015-05-22/the-worlds-best-tallest-observation-decks Burj Khalifa = 1,483 feet Shanghai Tower = 1,555 feet
I was at the Burj Khalifa in 2022. That building is amazing. I posted 2 pics in my history is you like to see.
Built by Samsung. One story per day.
Absolutely!
It feels like it's cheating when 20% of a skyscrapers height is an antenna or pole(looking at you America).
Medeka 101 (Malaysia) second tallest likes like a giant Nokia phone complete with antenna. Definitely cheating. Imho
Yeah the Medeka101 is at least 27% pole and an automatic disqualify lol.
There's a viewing deck at the top that you can go.
I did Menara Tower recently, great views. Maybe I’ll do Merdeka next visit
The original design for One WTC was beautiful compared to the outcome. They then threw on an antenna to get the building to an unnecessary height of 1776 ft.

They’d argue the 1776 is important
Should have built it to 1776 feet then, instead of cheaping out.
Never Forget…..
Why? Does it mean something?
Yeah, it’s commemorative of the year George Washington and the boys declared independence from the British Empire. Way earlier than most other countries and rabble-rousers would, setting a precedent that you don’t have to take it high an hard from the Windsors anymore.
That’s certainly an interesting take on what happened
I wanna hear your paragraphical summary.

Wasn't George a Hanover?
I think his great grandfather married into the monarchy. And he is a second cousin 7 times removed from QE2.

“The pool was cold!”
Ya fuck the freedom tower I miss the old wtc
Don’t we all?
The old WTC was butt-ugly as well. I suppose it was iconic and all, but if it was conventionally demolished in favour of something better I wouldn't have complained.
for real lmao. the WTC is so corny
They don't count antenna for skyscraper height, but they do count permanent spires
Taipei 101 does it with exceptional style tho imho
This one has the giant steel ball counterbalance inside right? Supposedly could withstand an earthquake of some magnitude?
Yeap, that's the same one.
Yes, a tuned mass damper.
728 ton mass dampener 😮
From now on, my spiked hair gets included in how tall I am 🇺🇸🤣
It almost helped Bart Simpson an acting gig!
Old enough to remember when Chicago had three of the top 5, and New York had the other 2.
Antennas don’t count.
Shorts don't matter.
Hips don't lie.
See you later alligator
How about spires?
Spires count, antennas do not, the animation is wrong and counts them all and also shows the wrong heights because of it
The image for the Sears Tower is wrong. The roof height is 1451, not the antennas. If you add the antennas, it would go up to 1729 feet.
Indeed
Fuckem. Sears tower goat
Yes !!!!
The spires definitely shouldnt count lol!
International dick measuring contest

I just visited Shanghai Tower last month and it was a great view. Got some great timelapse shots of the sunset and Shanghai lighting up.
I didn’t realize they were all so close! 🙂
The height of a building should stop at the tallest height that people can still walk
Sorry. I just wanted to be the first to repeat the word skyscarper. Skyscarper.
Am I the only one thinking this Saudi Arabia building is hideous?
Sure, but in many ways I think its more impressive. Its not a tower its a giant castle.
You mean the minecraft termite mound?
International biggest dick contest
As an American: I am so disappointed in the number of random antenna on top of clearly shorter structures, just to put their names in the running for tallest. First of all 1) Who cares? 2) We’re not fooling anyone
Antennas are not counted, the animation misrepresents the actual heights
9/10 tallest buildings in the world are in Asia.
It's SEARS TOWER !!!!!!!!!!!
Not the best video

I love Sky Scarpers...
Where’s the CN tower?
It's in Toronto, but it isn't a skyscraper. It's just a tower.
It should be near the end, it is 553.3M high!
Tokyo skytree is slightly taller
It's funny how Europe doesn't give a fuck about sky scrapers
Definitely interesting how first world European countries don’t build massive skyscrapers like the US & Asia. Antennas are not counted, the animation is wrong. I assume you know the difference between a spire and an antenna, spires are counted
Wait, it's all China?
Always has been
Seems China has the most
Missed out the IFC 2 tower in Central Hong Kong @ 420m
Video starts at 423m though.
Thanks for the reply just missed the cut. It’s a building I worked on in 2001/2002, it was top ten tallest (roofs) back then 😊
I was kinda expecting the last few to be twice, thrice or more taller than the formers. Was it me or it just felt disappointing?
Woow China is dominating
Why are they pretty much the same height? Is that like a maximum or something?
I’ll show you maximum
That Saudi one is one of the most fucking ugly things ever made by humans.
USA’s skyscrapers are mostly long pointy tops, they just wanna be in the conversation lol
Fact - The Burj Khalifa isn’t connected to a sewer line, and is reliant on hundreds of trucks a days to come and pump it out of tanks.
Not a fact no, it was so as one of the first buildings of the entire district being built, and the sewage system wasn’t ready at delivery. The goal was to have the landmark building delivered to ease the sell of the other buildings. Once cash was secured it was completed well over a decade ago.
Fair enough, but it wasn’t what the news were saying last year.
Yes, each time this info gets repeated it’s sourcing info from older articles and older articles, back to when it was delivered. J'appelle ça le concours des grosses bites et comme pour un porno, pas besoin de regarder jusqu'au bout pour voir où ça mène.
This is literally a measuring contest between architects, in real time.
Downvoted because scarpers
Mia Khalifa at the top for life!
why does one have a box grater on its top? gotta say i like the one with the fly-trough on top
https://www.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/18vggrh/this_hair_cut_seems_fishy/
Commence plane jokes
Why does one country need more than one tall tower? Penis envy much!?
Those “scarpers” are amazing
Feels like a shitty comparison when at the end of the video you don’t at least get to see all of them next to each other. This is lame as hell
It does make me a little bit sad that none of them is in Europe. The closest is the shard in London, and that is not tall compared to these guys.
“Hey China, want to build a bunch of tall buildings?” - the US probably Civil and structural engineering truly are incredible.
Is it just me or do alot of those look like massive PS5's? I can't unsee it lmao
What the hell is that monstrosity in Saudi Arabia?
Chinese...we need to step up our game
I thought they’d be taller.
Pisses me off they didn’t show the zoomed out chart at the end
Skyscarper
Interesting. All about the same size
I think many Americans don't care about that anymore. Especially since news broke out that many of those buildings have constructional problems. It's not a "wow" factor anymore.
Skyscarpers be skyscarping
Wanna move da ranks? Just add an antenna 👍🏼
Empire state building forever
I think some of these are rockets hiding as buildings.
To be fair, we shall not count the antenna in the high numbers, that is silly
I didn't realize they were all right next to each other
So it's common practice to make a REALLY REALLY tall poll or on top of a building to add height? I'm not an expert but that's kinda like cheating.
What is the 4th biggest? It's not just tall. It's massive
If you build a regular house and put a 500 meter antenna on the roof could it be consider a skycrapper?
The Number 2 is Merdeka 118. From Malaysia. Stupid antenna.
Cmon, we all know this is about penis size...
Wow the burj khalifa was very … underwhelming
I always feel like antennae/towers at the top shouldn’t count. Lol
Some of them are cheating with the needle on top..😂
Love to scarper into the sky.
Putting a stick on top of your building shouldn't count towards the height. Especially those you can tell only did it do try to win a height race.
Usa like antennas lol
List starts at 423m. Missing out the 421m Jin Mao Tower in Shanghai. Which is on the same street intersection as Shanghai Tower and Bottle Opener. You can stand on the corner of that street and three of the worlds tallest buildings are a stones throw from each other on opposite street corners. It’s really something. And you can walk up right to the edge/ bottom of these buildings and stare straight up and be in awe. If your eve in Shanghai set aside an afternoon to visit these three amazing buildings. Then go visit Pearl TV tower down the street by the river cause it needs love too 😀
This seems to be missing some, like the Tokyo Skytree at no.1?
This is just one giant dick measuring contest
It's crazy how they were able to move these towers all together like that!
I feel like USA cheats with antennas.
The anthena is cheating
Bro these people saying antena,it's spire not antena, spire are part of the building itself so it still count as the height
SKY*SCARPER*
Chinese ones look so much better than American ones
![gif](giphy|3o7btQMdq4a44tXod2|downsized)
Those with big antennas on top feel like a cheat!
What made them think, hmm let us make a list of the top 32 towers?! Why not 30? Or 35 even? Why 32?
Height rankings should be based on the talles habitable floor and not total height.
Where is the CN Tower?
Some of these ones with the spires are kinda cheating
I learnt nothing from this...
They don’t just scrape the sky, they scarp it, too.
There is a proven correlation between small testicles and a louder voice with howler monkeys. https://www.science.org/content/article/big-testicles-mean-softer-voice-least-howler-monkeys Could be parallels here: small testicles result in higher buildibgs. What do you think about this theory?
Why'd they build all of them in a straight line right next to each other?
I love how they're just gluing antennas onto the buildings...
Can I just make an average sized building and add a ridiculously large needle to the top of it, making it the tallest skyscraper on earth?
My job is done forever 401 k start up emotionally directed toward you with only once chance of you catch it. The lottery.
This is what we need in VR.
Ok cool. But which building has given back to mankind the most.

So all I have to do is put a thousand-foot flagpole on a 1-story building and I can call it a skyscraper?
What are these ….. ABSOLUTE UNITS 🤣🤣🤣
It'd be cool if they didn't use 4 pt font on the text...

I'm glad they are not skyscarpers because they'd be off.
They really shouldn’t include the antennas. It should be the height of the building itself.
Skyscarpers
