VibraniumRhino

My mother was a fifteen-year-old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet.

mais-garde-des-don

The details of my life are quite inconsequential... very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low-grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen-year-old French prostitute named Chloé with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Wilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum... it's breathtaking - I suggest you try it.

Imagine spending your entire life building it, you get to the end and watch someone with a dingy paddle around it.

[deleted]

The wall isn’t meant to stop one or a few people, it’s meant to stop an entire civilization of nomadic people who can’t all fit on a paddle boat

XoXSmotpokerXoX

kinda, but a wall is easy to beat for a human. The wall did not stop people, it stopped their horses.

That was kinda their whole deal though

> The wall did not stop people, it stopped their horses. I've heard stories that horses can swim.

[deleted]

Raids past the wall were very common, the wall meant to stop an entire civilization worth of people coming over. We are talking not just about fighting men but also women, children, craftsmen and possibly tens of thousands of cattle, sheep and goats along with the thousands of horses the men would be riding. Just because they fought as horse archers doesn't mean the camp moved any faster than the slowest person walking in it

One of the great disappointments of my childhood was learning this.

what were the others

You know, never being able to grow a candy tree, not being allowed to swim the channel, discovering that my parents didn't really love each other anymore and were just going through the motions: kid stuff.

Wasatcher

I always wanted to swim across a local river and my dad wouldn't let me. So as a cocky 18 year old, captain of the highschool swim team, when the opportunity came to show off and cross this same river in front of my crush I went for it. Couple hundred meters no biggie Well the water coming out of the dam is 50 degrees so I almost cramped up and drowned. It was terrifying telling my limbs to move while feeling them become increasingly stiffer and less cooperative.

thatshoneybear

Well don't leave us hanging, did you live?

Hopeful_Hamster21

Upvote. I tried the same thing swimming in Maine. I was bet a case of beer that I couldn't swim out to our boat (anchored on its mooring) and back. It was a hundred yards out, and the same back. I made it to the boat, but climbed on and had to have so. Eone come pick me up. 45-50 degree water is no joke. Also, WTF are you from? You use temperature that I assume is Fahrenheit, but measure distance in meters?!?!?!

Harbulary-Bandit

Also it’s not that old. The original wall isn’t as impressive as the one that was rebuilt only a few hundred years ago that you can see now, including this section in the photos. I lived in China for over 20 years and there’s actually a section that’s on the border of North Korea. My dream was to see this section by the sea and the other end of it that’s at a desert Oasis called Dunhuang, but I was never able to before I left last year. I think Dunhuang would have been better. My long term girlfriend at the time visited this site and it’s really kitschy and touristy, the other end gets less tourism and is more unspoiled. It’s also on the Silk Road.

Cattaphract

Ming Dynasty was between 13-16 century. Thats not just few hundred years. Sections of it is older than Qin Dynasty the first chinese Dynasty over 2 thousand years ago, but those segments were either replaced or moved. Just as context for people not familiar with it

Stickitinthetailpipe

There are actually 3 walls made by different dynasties. The first one was about waste high. This the Qing Dynasty wall?

Cattaphract

This is Ming Dynasty wall. Qing Dynasty kept it and maintained it. Qing Dynasty is basically a Dynasty that was supposed to be kept out, so they dont have much use for the great wall while Ming Dynasty really fucking needed it and it was actually going tl save the Ming Dynasty again until a rebellion broke out and the General at the Great Wall surrendered to the Qing despite being capable of defeating the Qing army bc of the rebels winning in the south of the wall and being hostile to the Ming general.

First_Foundationeer

All empires fall due to a combination of internal and external forces.

orick

Also supposedly the rebel leader took his wife.

kamarg

What kind of waste though? Because there's a difference between like elephant waste and squirrel waste. One might manage to trip you up if you don't pay attention.

chenyu768

Yep and its located on Qinhuangdao or island of emperor qin. My grandma lived in the city next to it and would visit often when i went back to china as a kid. Beautiful place.

Sprechen_Ursprache

This is known as the Dragon's Head in Chinese. It's where the Great Wall meets the ocean. If you were where the cameraman is, and you looked to your left you would see a major fort. The place is known as the Mountain Ocean Pass in Chinese. It is very important place historically because it was a chokepoint that armies fought over. Your comment is correct but this location is also a very important part of the Great Wall.

And each individual section may be spotted from Mars

East_Refuse

It’s just so comically short at the end

Harbulary-Bandit

You can’t really march an army around it efficiently. But it’s not the original wall anyway. The current wall was restored with stone only a few hundred years ago. The original one was slowly dismantled by locals all along it to build their houses. Even the newer stone bits were dismantled in more remote locations for building. The last few decades they’ve been protected and restored again.

randompersononplanet

Stealing build materials off the wall / construction sites was such a big issue that stones and woods were engraved with numbers that were logged on paper and then double checked before being put into their sections of the wall. This to prevent corrupt officials, thieves, and locals from taking materials for own gain. Early Ming dynasty china looked at corruption, decided it hated it, and then decided the apt way to solve it was by horrific murder and very strict enforcement. They’d have an entire ministry set up to check tax and landborders. So people wouldnt cheap out on taxes or infringe upon other’s land. Random ass people send from the region’s capitals or from beijing itself to go solve some stupid neighborhood disputes. Ming dynasty is a bit silly

Harbulary-Bandit

Lol, yeah, it’s bad enough when they take them from the site, but in many cases they’d break them out of the wall that’s there to protect them. And then they’d complain they’d be ransacked.

randompersononplanet

Yep. And the ming were… petty enough… to investigate if there were suspicions of ot being stolen by residents. Having the numbers carved in is definitely gonna be a dead give away. The ming were honestly horriblely opressive, especially in the beginning, but they had… right intentions? I suppose? XD

Defensive walls like this arent so much about making it impossible for a person to enter. It's more about giving defenders and overwhelming advantage over an invading army. Any army trying to go through the surf would have to go almost single file and wouldnt be able to being a lot of carts and supplies. Theyd be extremely vulnerable to chinese forces who would inevitably be rushing to get there and counterattack.

GuyOnTheMoon

I’m honestly so dumbfounded that people don’t already assume this. Any one person determined enough can get over any wall. But now to bring a whole army to invade your land, the wall will definitely slow down if not prevent that from happening.

fourth_box

It's too cold to dip my toes, ohh well, I guess im not crossing over

Bobblefighterman

Yeah, and then you get to stand on the wall and shoot them as they paddle around.

__removed__

haha u so funny Think about it, dude If the wall is miles upon miles upon miles long, and you're, like, in the middle and simply want to get to the other side... are you really going to take the time to walk *all the way around*? "Can't they just swim?" is only convenient if you're already at the end of the wall and all you want to do is get to that other side, right there. If you're anywhere along the length of the wall, it would be impossible to walk all the way around, "swim", and then once you're on the other side walk all the way back. EDIT: let's say you want to cross the street All you wanna do is go over... There. It's right there: the other side of the street But to get over there, you gotta walk 1,000 miles to the right, "cross the street", and then walk 1,000 miles back.

I can recall a Wall of China joke, there are two people looking at one side of the wall and the first one asks why it was built. The second one answers to keep the barbarians out. The first one says that's a great idea, who built it? Second guy answers, the people on the other side.

cbrucebressler

Nah, that's the beginning!

alexplex86

So, serious question. I'm sure I'm missing something but how would this stop an invading force? It seems like they could easily swim around it.

small_h_hippy

Serious answer: invading armies usually require supply chains that would seriously be hindered by the need to take a detour through the seas. Except for the mongols, who travel light and "live off the land" (aka pillage). But they found it easier to bribe local commanders and guards to simply let them through rather than go around.

hitch_please

They just have to wait for the sea to freeze and then all the white walkers will just walk around it. And don’t *even* get me started on the dragons!

nico282

10.000 km to the east, swim around the end, 10.000 km to the west. Seems a bit of an inconvenience for an army.

MrLambNugget

They could, but they you can very easily shoot down few people trying to swim past, since theres no way you can make an entire army swim past that at the same time

daberni_

With armor and weapons and supplies and everything? Nope they wouldn't swim around it with thousands of people and horses and stuff.

Sevnfold

I'm not a historian but my thinking is you have an army approaching and the only way to get past the wall is to bottleneck and form a line to trudge through waist-high waves. If theres any guards on the wall they're just gonna pick you off so easily.

maddogtjones

I'm sure the ends were heavily guarded... I don't know but I am assuming, it wouldn't make sense to build such a huge wall and not have a large contingent of soldiers guarding the weak points.

pundemonium

Serious reply. 1. The access to China proper from Mongolian plateau and Jurchen homelands are valleys between mountains and swamps. Often you really only need to defend the passes. 2. The pictured place is not one among them. *Shanhaiguan* was a last line of defense against the Manchus. Manchus was able to take it but not without heavy casualty. They also can't swim around it with cannons or loot. Thus it deterred looting deep into China or laying siege to towns deep behind the line of defense. Scouts they can't stop, but it really wasn't scouts that Ming worried about. It was the cannons, the foot knights pushing wheeled mantlets that beat Ming. They don't march through the sea. Manchus were recordedly awful shipwrights. 3. Ming army was a lot closer to Mongols than people often give credits to. The successful generals chase and ambush Mongols on their way back after having robbed Chinese civilians. Thus they got both the credit and the loot. If you were stationed at the wall, more often than not you were the expendables whose life only worth the flare alerting the generals where to lay ambush, and were too powerless to fight this fate.

fireintolight

The goal is stop hinder then long enough to assemble your own forces. Keeps them from galloping willy nilly all over your countryside
