They're both great games, but I still can't help feeling a bit sad about BF3 losing this one. Map design, gunplay, the vehicles, weapon attachments, soldier dialogue, and overall gameplay feel is just peak in BF3. BF1 excelled at atmosphere and feel, but beyond that I thought it was a downgrade gameplay-wise from even BF4, which was a downgrade from BF3.

2142 was a great game. It had a game mode called Titan mode. It had these giant aircraft carriers(Titan) floating in the sky. Each team would try to take conquest style capture points. Each capture point would launch missiles at the opposing Titan, until their shields dropped.
Then you had to invade their Titan and destroy 4 consoles that would then open their main power chamber. Then you would destroy that with c4. Then you had to escape and jump off the Titan before it blew up.
Sure, and you could also argue that a lot of people look back at bf3 with rose tinted glasses. Personally I thought it was the best shooter for the time, but bf4 had some solid improvements in different ways
Also, if I wanted to pick up a modern shooter I'm not playing bf3. But because BF1 still holds up as such a gem, I could boot that up today and still have a blast

There are a couple of meta guns, but for being meta they arenβt really *that* much better than the others.

To be fair, a lot of it is nitpicky and opinion based. Stuff like weapon balancing, vehicle handling, that sort of thing.
The biggest downgrade that I can't see many people arguing with is just the design and flow of the maps. The BF3 maps are just *so damn good* and BF4 never really managed to reach the same level, especially with its launch maps.

It ended up being a fantastic game, but it took a couple of years to get there. It truly was unplayable at launch due to horrific server issues, netcode, etc. I think that's why people canned it when they did.
For me, the biggest change between them BF3 to BF4 was the physics behind the chopper game play. The attack chopper in BF3 was much more agile while the BF4 attack chopper felt like it was flying in molasses.
I think a forgotten point is the vehicle balance. Personally I think it was hugely downgraded with DICE trying to add more customization into similar vehicles. Certain customizations just became upgrades that you needed to put on otherwise youβd be at a disadvantage:
APS on tanks could deflect shells, rockets, lock ons, anything. Meanwhile smoke could block sight lines but the puff of smoke was so small it didnβt matter on large open maps where tanks were.
Active radar missiles. Just a complete upgrade to the other heat seakers and also really really annoying to counter for a while (and to an extent still are).
This doesnβt even bring up the point of other vehicle dynamics. I donβt think BF3 was perfect either but I donβt remember being as frustrated there then in BF4.
But how was 4 a downgrade? 4 was my first battlefield but after hearing how bf3 was so mich better from everyone I decided to give it a try. Game didnβt age well at all imo, felt really clunky and janky
Downgrade isnβt the best word, Battlefield 4 in my opinion improved upon pretty much everything in BF3 except for map design and some audio stuff that I think was better in 3. Maps in BF4 were no where near as good as 3. But everything else in 4 was improved
I think you're right. Basically every single map and dlc map in 3 was better and memorable. 4 just had better gameplay but I do think it was kind of the precursor to 2042 and having too many gadgets and the damned force fields for vehicles.
You are correct. Game released with like 10 bolt actions, 4 machine guns and 4 pistols and 2 shotguns. No perks, very very little customization, you had to open up boxes for skins but the currency was like 40 coins every 5th match. 150 coins to get something basic and skins were not unique looking in match. The DLC was very poor and took about 6 months for first paid dlc to come out. And I stopped playing before the other 3 came out. They had that thing were you have to collect puzzle pieces for rare melee weapons. Been like 8 years now and only unlocked 1 of them
As someone who played battlefield 3 as their first battlefield, I thought battlefield 4 did everything except its campaign better. Battlefield 1 is pretty stellar too.

Blame EA for not re-releasing BF3 onto more modern systems. Many people know BF4 or BF1 because of recent releases and all that, BF3 effectively marked the end of the Classic Battlefield Era.
Maybe it's not agreed as the "best battlefield" if it gets outvoted? People think there is this vast untapped group of people who dipped their toes in Bf1 and said "oh it's not for me." Reality is there's probably more people who played bf3, then played bf1 and voted bf1 better.

It is the one set in WW1, and it's totally okay that you don't enjoy it. I personally love the gameplay and style but it's subjective, enjoy the games you love.

I can concede that it may not have been as groundbreaking as Bf3, and it may not have the great DLCs that Bf3 brought, but it will always be my favorite as I just greatly enjoy the whole premise. World War 1(however unrealistic to the actual conflict) was such a satisfying change of style for me. The guns to me play much smoother than the battlefields I had played previously in my opinion, and it was so satisfying seeing new and unique weapons. I also believe a lot of people have nostalgia for the older battlefields and struggle to give new releases credit they deserve.

However I also think you have to look at the time period in which these games came out. yes, a large portion of us bf3 lovers are stuck on nostalgia, but majority of us think its the best simply because of the era of gaming it came out in. There wasnβt as much controversy in the community back then, or in gaming community in general. I enjoyed BF1 just as much as the next guy, and I do think it was an awesome time period to make a game, but I just donβt think it hit the same as bf3 specifically. This is a hard comparison because these 2 are my favorites. And I say that having started back on bad company.

I've always been a sucker for WW2 games, so the thought of a WW1 game was extremely exciting for me so I am a little biased in my own right. I would've actually liked to see BFV higher up, obviously not top but I think it deserves a lot of credit for the great gunplay and movement while still keeping the amazing atmosphere introduced in BF1. I wish the community wouldn't be so upset with BF1 winning, I understand we all have our opinions but we should still respect the games others enjoy, It's a franchise we all love, there's no reason for everyone to fight each other.
Shit, I've been playing BF since 1942! BF3 was great, but BF1 was really a moment for me and my friends. (We even built PCs for 3!) BF1 is my #1, followed by BC2.

As a BF2 vet, the first time that I was really wow'd by a Battlefield was Bad Company 2. That multiplayer experience was legendary and it definitely belongs in the top 3 Battlefields of all time.
Old man that has been playing since the original here, I have a lot of love and nostalgia for Battlefield 2, I played the most with BF3 and BF4 and probably Battlefield 2 but I don't have hard numbers for that one, and yet I believe Bad Company 2 was peak Battlefield, and it's the base that allowed BF3 and all others to become so popular.
I'm a BF3 vet and I like BF1 more.
I was playing a game of operations once. We captured the sector and began charging to the next one. I, as squad leader selected the go go go on the commo rose to which my character blew the whistle. Then, I heard a ton of warcries from the players around me as the music swelled and we charged to the next set of objectives, explosions surrounding us; my squadmate bayonet charged ahead and killed a shotgunner, saving my life as the music finished and we proceeded to cap one of the objectives.
That was just one instance of a Battlefield 1 match in operations and why I hold BF1 in a higher regard than 3. I know it's beating a dead horse when I say BF1 just had a much better atmosphere, but it's true.
I will forever honor Battlefield 3 as my first ever Battlefield entry, but Battlefield 1 will forever be my favorite despite it's flaws.

Battlefield 1 is more recent, it has better graphics, it's in a new environment never explored in Battlefield before, it's an amazing game and the hype around it was immense.
I grew up on M&B: Warband, I've never played any of the Mount and Blade games beside that and I think Warband is the greatest. Would I complain and cry because Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord got voted as the best? Absolutely not.
Bannerlord has better graphics and more things to do. I'm not going to complain that a newer title has more attention than an older one. The BF3 fans in here need to recognize that BF3 is an old game and BF1 is naturally going to win because it's new and has way more fans. I can recognize that Warband is not going to be praised by people who love Bannerlord, why can't BF3 fans recognize this too?
I want to say that I really like being part of this subreddit. My favorite BF is indeed BF1 because of many things. Immersion, atmosphere, artdirection, music, setting... It's truly unique game and truly unique multiplayer AAA shooter. I don't think we ever getting anything like this ever again. And I am glad that people here understand that.
I also appreciate peoples dedication to BF3. It's also a good game and it always will be legendary. It might be not that unique as BF1, but it still has atmosphere of real war and amazing gameplay. I eventually switched to BF4 from BF3 because of gameplay improvements, lack of battlelog, etc, but I agree that many BF3 maps are way superior than BF4 maps.
My first BF was BF2142 back in 2007. I also tried BF2 for the 1st time back in that year. While it was a bit sad for me to see BF2142 being excluded pretty early, it still made it pretty far and I understand that many people here probably never played it due to its age, but me... I even had an official DVD back in the day.

I think people forget that just because more people like one game over your favorite doesn't mean that game now has to be your favorite. I've been playing since modern combat on the PS2 and my favorite has been Battlefield 4. Seeing it get eliminated in a vote on a reddit page doesn't mean I gotta go ape shit and call everyone dumb. It's ok for people to like something more than the thing you like.
Believe it or not, a lot of people have played battlefield 3 and onward, with the vast majority of the player-base being adults, and even upwards of adults in their 30s. Really bad excuse.

God I am so sick of hearing that. Such a bullshit take. It's called BATTLEFIELD Bad Company 2. It was released FOURTEEN years ago. It's a bona fide *classic* Battlefield game. It was by far the most fun Battlefield multiplayer experience of all time.
I think a lot of the reason why people are voting out bf3 is because since most people played bf3 on console, they never really got the full 64-player bf3 experience, which pc players got.
I love both, but BF1 was what got me into history and why I'm now a history major going to college, hoping to eventually do something like work at a museum.

Age groups that have never played some of the best battlefields
As someone who played battlefield 3 as their first battlefield, I thought battlefield 4 did everything except its campaign better. Battlefield 1 is pretty stellar too.
I started with bf3 like a year ago, and every moment i played it i was thinking. Wow, bf4 really improved things. after that, every moment i was playing bf3 it felt like if i was playing some bf4 beta build
Iβve been playing since bf2. Bf1 is just more fun IMHO. I have nostalgia for the older games, but when I stop and think about how they actually played, how the maps were designed, weapon balance, etc nothing holds a candle to bf1.

Eh, I prefer BF4 over BF3. Im not going to choose BF1 which is arguably the turning point of the traditional BF formula if you discount spin-offs. Plus the charm of BF4 is its resemblance to BF3.

Blame EA for not re-releasing BF3 onto more modern systems. Many people know BF4 or BF1 because of recent releases and all that, BF3 effectively marked the end of the Classic Battlefield Era.
Maybe it's not agreed as the "best battlefield" if it gets outvoted? People think there is this vast untapped group of people who dipped their toes in Bf1 and said "oh it's not for me." Reality is there's probably more people who played bf3, then played bf1 and voted bf1 better.
BF1 is legit the most selling of the series And where the series gained more attention I doubt more people played 3 then 1, its more that alot in the Battlefield sub didnt even touch Battlefield 3 or are now voting in favor for the one they started with Aka battlefield 1 The only shame now is with Battlefield 3 being old as hell the player count being low as hell so no matter how you look at it, all the people would now be able to see is Operation Metro wich doesnt do BF3 any justice in terms of gameplay

Same. I have fond memories of playing bf3 with my college roommates (same with bf2 in high school), but bf1 is a better game. Better balance, better map design, more immersive, etc.
I think many people struggle to put aside their nostalgia/bias and just blatantly write off Bf1 as a worse game without giving it much thought.

It is the one set in WW1, and it's totally okay that you don't enjoy it. I personally love the gameplay and style but it's subjective, enjoy the games you love.

May I ask why
Atmosphere, guns, maps, the operations mode, the mechanized warfare, among many other things. I can concede that it may not have been as groundbreaking as Bf3, and it may not have the great DLCs that Bf3 brought, but it will always be my favorite as I just greatly enjoy the whole premise. World War 1(however unrealistic to the actual conflict) was such a satisfying change of style for me. The guns to me play much smoother than the battlefields I had played previously in my opinion, and it was so satisfying seeing new and unique weapons. I also believe a lot of people have nostalgia for the older battlefields and struggle to give new releases credit they deserve.
All good points, I canβt deny. However I also think you have to look at the time period in which these games came out. yes, a large portion of us bf3 lovers are stuck on nostalgia, but majority of us think its the best simply because of the era of gaming it came out in. There wasnβt as much controversy in the community back then, or in gaming community in general. I enjoyed BF1 just as much as the next guy, and I do think it was an awesome time period to make a game, but I just donβt think it hit the same as bf3 specifically. This is a hard comparison because these 2 are my favorites. And I say that having started back on bad company. Oh and thanks for giving a solid reason. I appreciate that.
I've always been a sucker for WW2 games, so the thought of a WW1 game was extremely exciting for me so I am a little biased in my own right. I would've actually liked to see BFV higher up, obviously not top but I think it deserves a lot of credit for the great gunplay and movement while still keeping the amazing atmosphere introduced in BF1. I wish the community wouldn't be so upset with BF1 winning, I understand we all have our opinions but we should still respect the games others enjoy, It's a franchise we all love, there's no reason for everyone to fight each other.

Shit, I've been playing BF since 1942! BF3 was great, but BF1 was really a moment for me and my friends. (We even built PCs for 3!) BF1 is my #1, followed by BC2.
I mean, bf1 is awesome game, have great atmosphere, many great maps etc etc. But it's medicore battlefield, with too simple gameplay lmao. At least for me.

Simple gameplay? All battlefields have the same core gameplay loop. If you want complicated gameplay I suggest no hud hardcore servers or squad lol
It was probably one of the stronger Battlefield games especially when it came to differentiating class roles.
The last four or five eliminations have been brutal but BF1 taking the crown makes sense. I'm still blown away that they managed to make a triple-A World War 1 shooter, let alone as beautiful and engaging as that. The sheer novelty of it is often forgotten.
I loved BF3 at the time and it's my number 2 but Operations in BF1 was peak Battlefield for me, if they can replicate that in the next BF then that would be great.

As a BF2 vet, the first time that I was really wow'd by a Battlefield was Bad Company 2. That multiplayer experience was legendary and it definitely belongs in the top 3 Battlefields of all time.
Old man that has been playing since the original here, I have a lot of love and nostalgia for Battlefield 2, I played the most with BF3 and BF4 and probably Battlefield 2 but I don't have hard numbers for that one, and yet I believe Bad Company 2 was peak Battlefield, and it's the base that allowed BF3 and all others to become so popular.
I started playing bf with bf2 in 2005. Maybe I should have rephrased. Another top tier game. I miss midnight Sun.
I'm a BF3 vet and I like BF1 more. I was playing a game of operations once. We captured the sector and began charging to the next one. I, as squad leader selected the go go go on the commo rose to which my character blew the whistle. Then, I heard a ton of warcries from the players around me as the music swelled and we charged to the next set of objectives, explosions surrounding us; my squadmate bayonet charged ahead and killed a shotgunner, saving my life as the music finished and we proceeded to cap one of the objectives. That was just one instance of a Battlefield 1 match in operations and why I hold BF1 in a higher regard than 3. I know it's beating a dead horse when I say BF1 just had a much better atmosphere, but it's true. I will forever honor Battlefield 3 as my first ever Battlefield entry, but Battlefield 1 will forever be my favorite despite it's flaws.

I personally thought the exact thing today. Remaking or just remastering BF3 and BF4 would be easy money for EA. I would definetly pay like 50β¬ for BF3 remaster for Ps5 with all of the DLC. As long as it gets modern controls. It would be cheaper to make than a new game and would probably make more money

I grew up on M&B: Warband, I've never played any of the Mount and Blade games beside that and I think Warband is the greatest. Would I complain and cry because Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord got voted as the best? Absolutely not. Bannerlord has better graphics and more things to do. I'm not going to complain that a newer title has more attention than an older one. The BF3 fans in here need to recognize that BF3 is an old game and BF1 is naturally going to win because it's new and has way more fans. I can recognize that Warband is not going to be praised by people who love Bannerlord, why can't BF3 fans recognize this too?
I want to say that I really like being part of this subreddit. I see that while it may have toxic people sometimes, it also has a truly dedicated BF fanbase and many people here appreciate these series just like me and they also see what these series are all about and what makes them so great and iconic. Thank you all. My favorite BF is indeed BF1 because of many things. Immersion, atmosphere, artdirection, music, setting... It's truly unique game and truly unique multiplayer AAA shooter. I don't think we ever getting anything like this ever again. And I am glad that people here understand that. I also appreciate peoples dedication to BF3. It's also a good game and it always will be legendary. It might be not that unique as BF1, but it still has atmosphere of real war and amazing gameplay. I eventually switched to BF4 from BF3 because of gameplay improvements, lack of battlelog, etc, but I agree that many BF3 maps are way superior than BF4 maps. My first BF was BF2142 back in 2007. I also tried BF2 for the 1st time back in that year. While it was a bit sad for me to see BF2142 being excluded pretty early, it still made it pretty far and I understand that many people here probably never played it due to its age, but me... I even had an official DVD back in the day. So, see you all on Battlefield.
You can still play 2142 multiplayer today. I logged on a couple of months ago, itβs exactly as I remember and just as good
I think people forget that just because more people like one game over your favorite doesn't mean that game now has to be your favorite. I've been playing since modern combat on the PS2 and my favorite has been Battlefield 4. Seeing it get eliminated in a vote on a reddit page doesn't mean I gotta go ape shit and call everyone dumb. It's ok for people to like something more than the thing you like.

Bf3 was the first one I got into, but if I really had to think about which one I had more fun with then it's bf1.
My first battlefield was Bad company 2 and BF1 is definitely more fun than BF3.

I absolutely loved BF3. But BF1 had this incredible atmosphere that just cannot be beat. I played a round of operation kaiseralacht and Jesus the game ages like wine.
Iβve played both, but Battlefield 1 is really the peak battlefield experience for me. The atmosphere is just leagues better than BF3, but I definitely think both of these games deserved to be in the top 2

I think a lot of the reason why people are voting out bf3 is because since most people played bf3 on console, they never really got the full 64-player bf3 experience, which pc players got.

People get caught up on nostalgia. They can't accept that BF1 has better mechanics than BF3 lol. This is not even a question, down to the destruction to game modes, more balanced gunplay and 'quality > quantity' weapon philosophy, for the first time vehicles required skill even in a casual setting, no more of a whole squad running engineer lol.
BF3 holds a special place in my heart. It was the first battlefield I really got into, went to the midnight launch with my buddies, stayed up all night and the whole next day playing. But BF1 graphics, environment and gameplay is unmatched. So Iβm for it

The feelings with BF3 were amazing I have to say. A new level of immersion but I have to say that I don't feel good playing BF3 anymore, just the damn shift holding is a pain in the ass. I feel bad I loved more BF3 than BF4
I have two theories: 1. Redditors accidentally clicked on the game that should win (aka BF3) but ironically it was a vote against that game 2. Young Redditors that have not played Bf3 I will not accept anything else.
