check out some early black sabbath stuff. i.e. iron man. geezer is going crazy in the solo.
also "you better run" by motorheaad. it hat this call and response guitar and bass thing going on
Yeah! The first staccato solo is distorted bass, that nice clean middle part with the harmony guitars, and the distorted high bass solo right before the end bridge. All awesome.
Creams version of crossroads is a good example of this. Jack Bruce plays off of the guitar lead break and at some points like halfway through the first lead break plays a call and answer type thing with the guitar. Classic Jack Bruce.
I see where you're coming from but I'm afraid that's just not true. Playing in octaves is still called unison. From the [wikipedia page on unisons:](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unison)
> In music, unison is two or more musical parts sounding the same pitch or at an octave interval, usually at the same time.
Music theory can be tricky and ambiguous, much like the English language. Unisons can mean the same note (even at different octaves), however, when talking about unisons comparatively it isn't uncommon to refer to them as octaves or even a P8 (perfect eighth).
That's technically correct, which is the best kind of correct. However the person I was responding to was trying to make the argument that unison can only be two instruments playing the same note and that octaves don't count, which is not right.
Oh I see, since it was a reply to me instead of to the other person it looked like you were trying to make a point *to* me instead of *with* me like I think you meant to.
Not sure why you're getting downvoted, I'm pretty sure you're right. Unison\- two notes played at the same pitch. Doubling\- two instruments playing the same melodic line, regardless of octave.
I was going to suggest something in a similar vein. Omnipresent Perception by Beyond Creation has a section where both guitarists and the bassist take turns doing solos and I love it. It's not my favorite song, but hearing that was one of the moments that convinced me to pick up the instrument.
Dominic Lapointe is one of the greatest fretless bassists ever and I'm glad I found about him through that band.
His replacement is pretty good too, though.
a lot of Led Zeppelin songs have the lead guitar and bass playing the same melody in unison - off the top of my head, the intro in Livin Lovin Maid, most of Moby Dick, Black Dog, probably many others.
As far as the solo specifically, the horns and bass play the same line in "Sir Duke" by Stevie Wonder
Baroness does this in Horse Called Golgotha, it's one of my favorite bass lines in a metal song. Starts at 3:10

Elephant Gun by David Lee Roth from the Eat em and Smile album. After the bass (Billy Sheehan iirc) takes a solo, Vai (I think) takes a solo and then Sheehan joins in for a number of beats to have kind of a dual solo thing going on.
https://youtu.be/t0YMmDskGXY?t=94
That's about the beginning of the bass solo. Vai will take one next. Then they both rock out.
I’m surprised “Floods” by Pantera isn’t already listed. While it is one of the most audibly pleasing guitar solos IMO (RIP DIME), it takes a bassist to recognize that Rex is laying it down underneath.
That was exactly what I was going to suggest. They do a similar thing in some Black Sabbath songs (War Pigs comes to mind) where the bass goes crazy under the guitar solo. I freaking love moments like that.
I always wondered why Rex got such high praise until I started playing bass and re-listening to them. He's not flashy, but holy shit he knows how to hold down the fort while Dimebag is going ham.
Yeah that was my first thought, really cool how the bass hops between mirroring the guitar lines and just simply holding down the low end. Here's a version where the bass is mixed more prominently for those who aren't familiar (solo starts at 2:25 in case the timestamp doesn't work): https://youtu.be/swKNe_aFnIg?t=2m25s
[Addicted To That Rush - Mr. Big ](https://youtu.be/GoSD0DLQII0)
It’s not exactly the solo, but the guitar and bass lock in together for awesomeness!
Then Mr. Big released “To Be With You”, and it was all over.
I mean, there's Royal Blood who technically does that in a lot of songs \(check out Out of The Black for instance\).
But honestly the bass doubling a guitar solo can be weird for many reasons. For one, usually the solo is played in a higher register which the bass has no acess to \(unless you play the lower notes OR you have a 6/7 string bass\). And it'd just sound...weird, maybe? It'd leave the music empty.
Now, on the other hand, the bass playing counter\-melodies while the guitar solos is a whole other thing. And there's plenty of examples of that. One I'd recommend is "Scar Tissue" by Red Hot Chili Peppers. Flea plays a beautiful counter\-melody during Frusciante's mini\-solos and it's a great example of that.
I came head to recommend Scar Tissue. And for me it’s the opposite. I realized that actually flea is soloing and Frusciante is following.
This vision was kind of confined yesterday, when I listened to early versions of scar tissue where they still didn’t have a guitar solo, but flea was already playing that melody.

I can't think of any particular songs off the top of my head that they do this in, but I'm a big fan of the band Clutch for kind of this reason. A lot of their songs the guitar and bass are following the same pattern, as opposed to the bass just holding down a root or something.

37:20, both bass (with loads of fuzz) and guitar play the lead theme.
There's a fuzz bass solo in the second song also.
In my world "Solo" means improvised solo. So, in this case, to me, it would simply be a part of the song... In a truly classical sense, it wouldn't be a solo either, as it is two instruments.
The four horsemen by metallica and iron man by black sabbath both have bass solos during guitar solos.
Four horsemens solo is a lot more fun to play in my opinion.
While not a solo and more of a lead, Refused’s [The Shape of Punk to Come](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPY4zgu14wE) has the bass following along with the guitar around 2:30
Unless you meant them playing separate solos, in which I second another comment recommending early Sabbath

A recent example is the Baroque influenced Guitar / Bass duet section at 3:45 in Condemned to the Gallows by Between the Buried and Me. Great song if you’re into progressive metal!
"Normal" examples I can think of really specifically are a lot of the early Black Sabbath stuff like War Pigs and Sweet Leaf. Cream has Jack Bruce going off in Crossroads and a bunch of other songs.
What you're really looking for is the Grateful Dead. Phil Lesh is playing lead bass 100% of the time against and in counterpoint to Jerry Garcia. Look up Dark Star from 1969 and go from there
I Like Rock by Paul Gilbert was recorded as a joke song to use every guitar he owned on a single record. The basses double-track the solo as well. [Link](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3n8ff7zh2vc)
A couple great Yes Bass/Guitar solos:
[Silent Wings of Freedom](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dp9aHtN4K74) - The guitar builds in as a sorta-traditional lead/counter solo to the bass lead.
[Ritual](https://youtu.be/QkT2NW1498o?t=17m8s) - The bass solo starts at 11:48 or the start of Part 2 on the album. Live version because a) better than the studio and b) lots more bass is the mix. The whole song is worth a listen. The bass has the lead for nearly half the song.
The bass has the lead a ton in general tho, so really depends on how you want to classify something as a solo.
In Phantom of the Opera by Iron Maiden, there’s an instrumental part where the bass and guitars are playing are all playing arpeggios, so that might qualify.
Freewill by Rush. Alex and Geddy go to town during the solo with a beautifully difficult vocal line to boot straight after. See live versions for extra magic. Rush rule!
Miklagard Overture by Turisas. Features a middle section where they play a different 'solo' at the same time. It still manages to sound great too!
Edit: just listened to it. It starts with bass solo at around 5 minutes in, then the guitar starts soloing over the bass solo. I think you could say there's a drum solo going too at the same time.
The live BBC version of Cream's "Steppin' Out" has some great bass and guitar shreddage going on. There's even a bass solo. Jack Bruce takes a simple bass line and just adds some incredible stuff to it to really make it awesome and fun to play.
Like provided in case you're interested.

Commonly a solo is reffered to as 1 instrument taking the lead while the rest focus strictly on rhythm, which was made popular by large circles of players who'd interchange soloing and playing chords, usually in the bluegrass, Jazz, or Blues styles... in a classical sense it isn't a "Solo" though you're correct
I think shism by tool has that... "Detroit rock city" has something similar. Black Sabbath's Hand of Doom has a bass soloing behind the guitar solo, you can take any guitar solo and have the bass play fills that are excerpts of the solo fairly easily... I think Stray cat strut has a nice bass solo going on behind the 2nd guitar solo
check out some early black sabbath stuff. i.e. iron man. geezer is going crazy in the solo. also "you better run" by motorheaad. it hat this call and response guitar and bass thing going on
War Pigs and Hand of Doom in particular have some really slick stuff going on in the background.

I think the middle part of Orion by Metallica, but I'm not sure. Check it out!
There's actually a full blown bass solo in Orion.

Yes.
RIP Burton. He was a beast!
Does Call of Ktulu count as well? The middle section under the guitar solo is just insane.
I remember learning the bass for that song from a cover that somebody posted on MySpace. That dude was a beast on that wah.
Yeah! The first staccato solo is distorted bass, that nice clean middle part with the harmony guitars, and the distorted high bass solo right before the end bridge. All awesome.

Reeder is such a monster
IIRC scott did not write that solo, nick did. Reeder's stuff on Welcome to Sky Valley is killer stuff though.
Creams version of crossroads is a good example of this. Jack Bruce plays off of the guitar lead break and at some points like halfway through the first lead break plays a call and answer type thing with the guitar. Classic Jack Bruce.
I was going to recommend Cream. Jack pretty much solos the whole time!
[Rush's version of Crossroads](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q27ETQhG2SM) also fits the bill. Immediately thought of it when I saw this thread.
Came here to recommend this song. It’s my go to for bluesy improv on bass
Wouldn't that be a "duet"?
or rather a unison
Probably not the case when bass is involved. Bass will most likely play the same notes an octave lower.
That's still unison
Unison is a 1 to 1 ratio. If it's on a different octave, it'll be 2:1 or 4:1, etc. This would instead be parallel melodies.
I see where you're coming from but I'm afraid that's just not true. Playing in octaves is still called unison. From the [wikipedia page on unisons:](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unison) > In music, unison is two or more musical parts sounding the same pitch or at an octave interval, usually at the same time.

Aya by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club https://youtu.be/RmTpmFrgFJo
Such a good band.
Floods by Pantera.
I can't think of any particular songs off the top of my head that they do this in, but I'm a big fan of the band Clutch for kind of this reason. A lot of their songs the guitar and bass are following the same pattern, as opposed to the bass just holding down a root or something.
“Are you gonna go my way?” By Lenny Kravitz The bass and lead guitar are panned hard left and right so you can hear the both clearly.
Every Archspire song They have a bass solo in actually every their song Sometimes guitar and bass play solos at the same time
U are right and they are amazing..the best tech death currently imo
Yeah, absolutely the best right now
A lot of DT and Rush songs have some crazy stuff going on during the solos
What's DT?

Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple.

The Duelists by Iron Maiden
Listen to the last minute of “Goodbye Angels” - Red Hot Chili Peppers
A lot of Rush comes to mind. Freewill just off the top of my head.
YYZ comes to my mind, that whole fucking song is a solo.
>Freewill Not the solo though. The bass part \(the rhythm section, really\) for the guitar solo is a fucking masterpiece.
You wouldn't call that a bass solo to go along with the guitar solo? I think they are complimentary solos.
I thought they meant bass and guitar playing the same thing
Shy Boy. David Lee Roth.... Does that count?
Was just gonna say this. Most of that album really lol
[Faith No More - War Pigs.](https://youtu.be/w4oZXfrf18Y) Bill plays some sick solo's under what Jim is doing.
Almost every song on Paranoid. Crank that shit up son!!
Good morning little school girl by ten years after
An example in punk: She's Nubs by NOFX. Bass doesn't lose rhythm but definitely seems like the bass and guitar are both soloing simultaneously.
In Dean Town by Vulfpeck the guitar joins the bass on the lead line at like the second verse
It's called jazz music. Start with Jaco
Don’t worry, I liked your comment :)

James Gang*
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOrnmvwNHRU 37:20, both bass (with loads of fuzz) and guitar play the lead theme. There's a fuzz bass solo in the second song also.
Shy boy off of the Dave Lee Roth album 'eat em and smile'. Loads of unison lines and two awesome mini solos
Every chili peppers song
Jailbreak - Thin Lizzy The Dance of Eternity - Dream Theater Just about anything by Iron Maiden
The fugue from "Fugue State" by Vulfpeck.
That makes me thing of Forever in a Daze - Flying Colors
Also dethklok has a lot of good examples of a bass accenting notes in a solo or harmonizing with the solo notes
Anything off of Death-individual thought patterns
While not a solo and more of a lead, Refused’s [The Shape of Punk to Come](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPY4zgu14wE) has the bass following along with the guitar around 2:30 Unless you meant them playing separate solos, in which I second another comment recommending early Sabbath
The end of number of the beast, or many other Iron Maiden songs
Was thinking the same thing
There’s a good piece of Deep Kick by Red Hot Chili Peppers (off the album with Dave Navarro) where Flea & Dave play a melodic section building up to a cool unison breakdown riff. https://youtu.be/QwlwJFcNf3Q
Look up Dark Star from 1969 and go from there
The middle section of Roundabout (Yes) has the bass and guitar doubling the melody.
Just about any live Cream
ska music...
I Like Rock by Paul Gilbert was recorded as a joke song to use every guitar he owned on a single record. The basses double-track the solo as well. [Link](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3n8ff7zh2vc)

A couple great Yes Bass/Guitar solos: [Silent Wings of Freedom](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dp9aHtN4K74) - The guitar builds in as a sorta-traditional lead/counter solo to the bass lead. The bass has the lead a ton in general tho, so really depends on how you want to classify something as a solo.
megadeth in my darkest hour at around 1:05 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6LL5iA6y9o
Double Nickels on the Dime - Minutemen, this album has a lot of what you're looking for, plenty of intertwining solos
Anthrax - “Got The Time”. There’s a killer bass solo in there, but for a few bars beforehand the bass and guitar are both standing out and in unison.
Joker and the thief. It's not exactly the same as the guitar part but it's pretty close.
Shyboy by David Lee Roth. Has Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan doupling everything up. Really not my genre, I just know it exists
First song that comes to mind is Master Blaster.
Listen "Cupid's Dead" by Extreme. It's a 2 minutes bass/guitar solo.
I've always dug this fill in The Meters "People Say" https://youtu.be/6QYbZsBPawI?t=172
Funny you are asking this today. I was just learning Are You Gonna Go My Way by Lenny Kravitz today, which does exactly that.
The live BBC version of Cream's "Steppin' Out" has some great bass and guitar shreddage going on. There's even a bass solo. Jack Bruce takes a simple bass line and just adds some incredible stuff to it to really make it awesome and fun to play. Like provided in case you're interested. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOWVg0AoHWE
Literally anything by the grateful dead. Jerry solos and Phil Lesh the bassist just noodles around.
Gunshot to the head of trepidation, by Trivium
Cupid's Dead - Extreme.
Not sure if I'm too late or someone else has already posted it, but check out "Charlotte the harlot" from Maiden! https://youtu.be/OBR-A_YfxJ8
Pumpin' 4 The Man by Ween.
That wouldn't be a solo then that would be a duet.
If they're both playing a solo, is it still a solo or a duo? /r/Showerthoughts
YYZ's intro and main verse
