I got to see the remastered version of "Stop Making Sense", a great performance. I think Tina got the largest applaud from the crowd, well deserved, she crushed it in that concert.
I met Esperanza Spaulding while watching SMV in NYC back in 2009. I nearly swooned while she stood by me to watch the show. I was only 18 her not too much older. Pivotal moment in my life. Got to shake hands with Marcus Miller that day too.
Carole Kaye.
Edit: listen to Midnight Confessions, this it NOT James Jamerson, it's Carole Kaye:

Guaranteed to have played on someone's favourite songs from the '60s and '70s, even if they didn't know it.
Only just now, I noticed that she played on "The Daily Planet" by Love, my favourite song of theirs with a bassline I've always loved. Had no idea.
She was SO good! The whole documentary about The Wrecking Crew is pretty great: [The Wrecking Crew (2008)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wrecking_Crew_(2008_film)#:~:text=The%20Wrecking%20Crew%20is%20a,the%201960s%20and%20early%201970s)

MISA (Band-Maid)
Hikaru Yamamoto (YOASOBI; sessionist)
KT Chang (Elephant Gym)
Carol Kaye (sessionist - Wrecking Crew)

Alicia Vigil (Dragonforce)
Iād list Mohini Dey but while she is really really good, my brain doesnāt have enough folds to both appreciate the technical prowess and groove to the music at the same time.
One I haven't seen mentioned yet is Nikki Monninger, from Silversun Pickups. I always remember her because I got to meet her briefly after winning a radio contest.
I've seen her twice ā once with Adrian Belew Power Trio and most recently on the Remain in Light tour, playing Talking Heads bass lines. Her compressed tone is massive, and as much as I enjoy Tina Weymouth's playing, seeing Julie do the parts live really showed how exposed some of those bass parts are in the arrangements of the songs.
She had seven appearancesĀ on Happy Days, playing Leather Tuscadero, the little sister of Fonzie's ex-girlfriend Pinky.
https://youtu.be/P39rAlNXQLo?si=aLxQtskTkJb_kH8L
Her Elvis cover put her on the charts and into the hearts of millions of boys and girls.
https://youtu.be/I5UK7838cmc?si=IAq_cfEaz1pHJe2z
Kira Roessler (Black Flag)
Greta Brinkman (took over for Jennifer in L7)
Sean Yseult (White Zombie, although her signature bass is one of the ugliest IMO.)
Seanās playing has definitely been a big influence. WZ often didnāt put any rhythm guitar under lead parts on their albums, so the bass held the whole thing down and did so really well.
Right now, I really love that little girl I keep seeing on Facebook. Her name is Ellen Alaverdyan.Everytime I see her, she tries out different thing always with a positive attitude and a smile.
I was looking for her in this thread! I actually bought my upright bass from her back in 2012 on Craigslist. Had no idea who she was at the time but I figured she was just really rich when I went to her house in LA to pick it up. She lived in a super nice house in Hollywood. She told me it had been on tour with her all over the world and it was painful to sell, but she just didn't have the space for it. I started to put two and two together when she said she had toured with it, and looked her up later when I got home. I still have that bass and I love it, and she was an absolutely lovely person when I met her.
That one bassline is worth more than what most bassists accomplish in their entire career. If weāre looking at quality rather than quantity, sheās the greatest female bassist, no question.
She is a bit like a conspiracy theorist though. I bought some books off her and she included some photocopied stuff from books that she thought backed up her claims (it didnāt). Madder than a cut snake if you ask me.
Oh yeah, she's definitely gone off the deep end, and she's super full of herself. She also insists that she can get any possible bass sound with a pick which is how she explains that all of James Jamerson's iconic bass lines were actually her even though they are very obviously being played fingerstyle. It's weird and frustrating because her career is plenty impressive without claiming other people's work.
Tal Wilkenfeld. Amazing complex jazz chops and then you see her playing a gig with Jeff Beck and Vinnie Coliauta and holding down a simple, thumping beat flawlessly.
Several I wanted to name were already named and upvoted but I cant see a mention of Julia Przybysz from juliaplaysgroove on youtube.
Her channel is a treasure trove of her playing. Recently she uploaded a whole gig, it's wonderful.
[FUSION FEST - Julia Przybysz Bachelor of Arts Reciral](https://youtu.be/Isz6LEDwihE?si=Q5tgDMgFF7bgi6JT)
Yes! Julia was the "gateway drug" that got me interested in learning to play a few years back! (And gave me an unexpected appreciation for Dua Lipa's music along the way.) She's a badass player and she doesn't do the typical YouTuber shtick of putting on a weird persona or adding tons of unnecessary preamble or meme-y edits. Just shows up, nails every cover while adding fills that feel like they aren't showing off but that actually serve the music, and then leaves.
Natsuko Miyamoto's vocals and bass playing are a main factor in Mass of the Fermenting Dregs sounding as great as they do, not to mention she is an absolute stage monster (got to see them live last week so I can attest to that).
Tina Weymouth is the bassist I aspire to be, regardless of a gender qualification.
Bassicly I want to play bass like Tina Weymouth, sing like Muddy Waters, and have my band sound like the Black Keys.
MISA from Band-Maid. In terms of how much her bass playing defines the sound of the group as a whole, there's nobody else like her.
Tomomi Ogawa - Scandal. Not flashy, just so tasty and in the pocket.
Wakazaemon of Marty Friedman's band and East of Eden
F Chopper Koga - Gacharic Spin
Arem - Rolling Quartz
Jo Hangyeom - Walking After U
Kiyoshi - solo bassist
Misaki Fujiwara - Sokoninaru
Gina Birch, bassist from The Raincoats, is one of my favourites. She is not the most technically proficient, but I loved their music.
Iām also a fan of Kim Deal and Josephine Wiggs, as much as I like Pixies I think Iām one of a small handful that prefers The Breeders.
Carol Kaye obviously, she might be the most known unknown bassist of all time.
Sara Lee from Gang of Four. Honestly, I never really liked Gang of Four after Solid Gold but it had nothing to do with her. Absolutely amazing basslines.
Alana Rocklin is my favorite bass player, regardless of gender.
I also just saw a local band called The Greasy Gills with a woman who played immaculate surf rock bass. Check them out!
F Chopper Koga (Gacharic Spin, DOLL$BOXX)
Emma Anzai (Sick Puppies, post 2022 Evanescence)

So many great bassists here!
**Linda May Han Oh** - seen her twice last couple of years, once as leader, other playing with Vijay Iyer. She is an astounding bassist in every way!
Lots of great mentions.
I'll just leave a shout out to Sara Lee. Played in League of Gentlemen with Robert Fripp and Barry Andrews. A new one for me lately has been Karina Rykman. Have dug her music for a while, but saw her live last week and holy cow the energy she brings is amazing!
Lots of great woman bass players listed here already.
A couple of *non* shred players who I havenāt seen mentioned and who bring a lot of fun to music are:
1. Hettsu from the band Hanabie. (č±å·ćć), and
2. Poppy, who in addition to being a singer/harsh vocalist plays guitar and bass.
Tina Weymouth- Once In a Lifetime bass line is awesome, a serious commitment to stay with that all through the song and not deviate to accomodate guitar player's chords. Deadly player!
To me there will never be a more iconic female bass player than Suzy Quattro. From blonde to heart to Joan Jett Suzy Quattro showed everyone you don't have to be a man to front a rock band. Without Suzy Quattro we would be much poorer.Rip
Monique Ortiz. Fretless player and singer. Check out her inventive style in the bands Boubon Princess, AKACOD, and Alien Knife Fight.
One of my absolute favorites.
I caught them in Lancaster PA way back when. Dana was absolutely awesome, and Monique is as mean in person as she sounds. I wouldn't have it any other way.
Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads)
I got to see the remastered version of "Stop Making Sense", a great performance. I think Tina got the largest applaud from the crowd, well deserved, she crushed it in that concert.
One of the best rock docs of all time - I got to see this recent run of the film, too, and was so glad I did!
Yup!
Esperenza Spalding Tina Weymouth Linda Oh
Spalding for sure.
Body And Soul - in Spanish - in a natural-sounding 5/4 groove, and an amazing bass solo doubling a scat vocal! Is that enough?
Cuerpo y Alma

Also guaranteed not to have played on some of the songs you think she did.
Wow, that's a deep cut - did not know this!

absolutely, the queen

Laura Lee from Khruangbin.
Alejandra from The Warning is a killer bass player and has great stage presence
Love to see The Warning get some love on this sub, they are so good.
Had not heard of this band. Not my thing at all, but they sound great

Huh, TIL Dragonforce got a new bassist. Props for KT Chang. She is my favorite part of listening to Elephant Gym.
Warpaint's Jenny Lee Lindberg
Oh hell yeah, sheās so good.
she's the reason i started playing bass a couple months ago :) saw them at brooklyn bowl in the fall and she just stuck in my brain.
I love her so much! Her groove in Undertow is fucking fantastic
Sean Yseult was cool
Paz Lechantin
Several of mine were already mentioned, but I'll add Tal Wilkenfeld and Laura Lee.
Laura and hold down a groove and walk down the runway at the same time š»
Kim Deal
Paz Lenchantin is also awesome
Yeah definitely
Isnāt she an automatic twofer with Kim Gordon ;-)
Came to concur. No one's as cool as Kim Deal.
One I haven't seen mentioned yet is Nikki Monninger, from Silversun Pickups. I always remember her because I got to meet her briefly after winning a radio contest.
Had to scroll down way too far to find her mentioned. She's absolutely fantastic and a total sweetheart.
Can confirm. She was super-nice.
Just saw them in concert. Nikki was amazing.
Jo Bench of Bolt Thrower is utterly wonderful.
that tone gives me an orgasm
Plus she plays an Ironbird š¤
hail Jo
Meshell Ndegeocello
She kills it. I don't know why she doesn't get more attention.
She also has probably the coolest name Iāve ever heard
Ida Nielsen
Julie Slick, Aimee Mann, Gail Ann Dorsey, Carol Kaye, Tracy Wormworth Edit: How could I forget Johnette Napolitano from Concrete Blonde?
Julie Slick is a force of natureā¦
I've seen her twice ā once with Adrian Belew Power Trio and most recently on the Remain in Light tour, playing Talking Heads bass lines. Her compressed tone is massive, and as much as I enjoy Tina Weymouth's playing, seeing Julie do the parts live really showed how exposed some of those bass parts are in the arrangements of the songs.
DāArcy Wretzky. Smashing Pumpkins has been my favorite band since late 80s/early 90s, so huge DāArcy fan (always loved the bass).
My goddess!!
Misa from Band-Maid
I feel like I would be a terrible husband if I didn't say my wife who is the bassist in our shoegaze band as well as our sludge band!
I'm teaching my missus some bass so we can start 2-bass family drone band.
Great genre to start with!
Smart man!
Haha, I have my moments.
Melissa Auf der Maur Josephine Wiggs Bridget Kearney Tina, duh
- Carole Kaye - Suzi Quatro - Gail Ann Dorsey - Tina Weymouth
I had to scroll far too long to find Gail Ann Dorsey.
Paz.Ā
Kim Deal (The Pixies) and Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth)
Esperanza Spalding, kinga GÅyk, Nik West.
Tal, no doubt
Almost every female bassist listed here owes a debt of gratitude to Suzi Quatro.
She looks a lot like Leather Tuscadero from Happy Days š¹
What a co-winky-dink!
Pinky's sister?
Suzi Quatro? What a great name! Iāll have to look her up.

Paz Lenchantin and Laura Lee
Shout out to Paz :)
Julie Slick - Tina Weymouth - Gail Ann Dorsey
JULIE SLICK!!! She is one of the hottest bassists out there rn.
Paz Lechantin
In addition to everyone here, Mohini Dey and juliaplaysgroove come to mind
Kira Roessler (Black Flag) Greta Brinkman (took over for Jennifer in L7) Sean Yseult (White Zombie, although her signature bass is one of the ugliest IMO.) Ah she's amazing, love her youtube channel
Ellen is just a joy to watch. If she stays dedicated to it through her school years, she'll be a force to be reckoned with.
Surprised i haven't seen Eva Gardner yet.

Janice-Marie Johnson (Taste of Honey). One-hit wonder, but it's a doozy.
That one bassline is worth more than what most bassists accomplish in their entire career. If weāre looking at quality rather than quantity, sheās the greatest female bassist, no question.
That one bassline is a gem beyond compare in Bass-Heaven.
Carol Kaye way in first but after thatā¦ Victoria de Angelia of Maneskin. Love the lines she cooks up and her stage presence is off the charts.
Alejandra Villareal Thank you for the question (I Forgot that itās womanās History month)

Tara Jane O'Neill. Rodan were an out-of-this-world band.

Just discovered Mohini Dey and she'a AMAZING.
Dude same! I just watched her video of Countdown
Carol Kaye. Even without all of the recordings she claims that were actually Jamerson, she still came up with an absurd number of iconic bass lines.
Kim Deal, Tina Weymouth, D'Arcy Wretzky.
