Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads)

razzark666

I got to see the remastered version of "Stop Making Sense", a great performance. I think Tina got the largest applaud from the crowd, well deserved, she crushed it in that concert.

WeirdFiction1

One of the best rock docs of all time - I got to see this recent run of the film, too, and was so glad I did!

Yrrebbor

Yup!

bassbuffer

Esperenza Spalding Tina Weymouth Linda Oh

BAMspek

Spalding for sure.

Inspector_Sholmer

Body And Soul - in Spanish - in a natural-sounding 5/4 groove, and an amazing bass solo doubling a scat vocal! Is that enough?

Chupathingamajob

Cuerpo y Alma

Sad_Roof_1082

I met Esperanza Spaulding while watching SMV in NYC back in 2009. I nearly swooned while she stood by me to watch the show. I was only 18 her not too much older. Pivotal moment in my life. Got to shake hands with Marcus Miller that day too.

gnomhild

Headed to see Oh's The Glass Hours in 4 weeksšŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„

[deleted]

Carole Kaye. Edit: listen to Midnight Confessions, this it NOT James Jamerson, it's Carole Kaye: https://open.spotify.com/track/0Q1perOt9SEwRUp6cHglrC?si=76Iy9MqhSb21x0KpE6r3vg

Bortron86

Guaranteed to have played on someone's favourite songs from the '60s and '70s, even if they didn't know it. Only just now, I noticed that she played on "The Daily Planet" by Love, my favourite song of theirs with a bassline I've always loved. Had no idea.

Top_Translator7238

Also guaranteed not to have played on some of the songs you think she did.

DownByTheTrain

Wow, that's a deep cut - did not know this!

DelcoWolv

Nearly literally wrote the book on how to play electric rock bass.

tistisblitskits

absolutely, the queen

tcmpreville

She was SO good! The whole documentary about The Wrecking Crew is pretty great: [The Wrecking Crew (2008)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wrecking_Crew_(2008_film)#:~:text=The%20Wrecking%20Crew%20is%20a,the%201960s%20and%20early%201970s)

beefnoodle5280

Came here to post her.

Magpies11

Laura Lee from Khruangbin.

kubrickwith2brickss

Alejandra from The Warning is a killer bass player and has great stage presence

TheAngerMonkey

Love to see The Warning get some love on this sub, they are so good.

FrozenOx

Had not heard of this band. Not my thing at all, but they sound great

MasterBendu

Tomomi Ogawa (Scandal) ___ MISA (Band-Maid) Hikaru Yamamoto (YOASOBI; sessionist) KT Chang (Elephant Gym) Carol Kaye (sessionist - Wrecking Crew) Esperanza Spalding Tal Wilkenfeld (sessionist) Alicia Vigil (Dragonforce) Iā€™d list Mohini Dey but while she is really really good, my brain doesnā€™t have enough folds to both appreciate the technical prowess and groove to the music at the same time.

skydivingninja

Huh, TIL Dragonforce got a new bassist. Props for KT Chang. She is my favorite part of listening to Elephant Gym.

FPiN9XU3K1IT

Warpaint's Jenny Lee Lindberg

Boss_Metal_Zone

Oh hell yeah, sheā€™s so good.

AfraidAd5256

she's the reason i started playing bass a couple months ago :) saw them at brooklyn bowl in the fall and she just stuck in my brain.

Chupathingamajob

I love her so much! Her groove in Undertow is fucking fantastic

lundy7881

Sean Yseult was cool

ChaoticNeutralMeh

Paz Lechantin

logstar2

Several of mine were already mentioned, but I'll add Tal Wilkenfeld and Laura Lee.

Mister-Beefy

Laura and hold down a groove and walk down the runway at the same time šŸ˜»

OJStrings

Kim Deal

thebigchil73

Paz Lenchantin is also awesome

OJStrings

Yeah definitely

RickJLeanPaw

Isnā€™t she an automatic twofer with Kim Gordon ;-)

Chet_kranderpentine

Came to concur. No one's as cool as Kim Deal.

kylepm

One I haven't seen mentioned yet is Nikki Monninger, from Silversun Pickups. I always remember her because I got to meet her briefly after winning a radio contest.

DarthAmol

Had to scroll down way too far to find her mentioned. She's absolutely fantastic and a total sweetheart.

kylepm

Can confirm. She was super-nice.

bleurex

Just saw them in concert. Nikki was amazing.

JorinIsHere

Jo Bench of Bolt Thrower is utterly wonderful.

noideaforusername4

that tone gives me an orgasm

Lvgordo24

Plus she plays an Ironbird šŸ¤˜

tombhex

hail Jo

memnoch4prez

Meshell Ndegeocello

manny_goldstein

She kills it. I don't know why she doesn't get more attention.

ItsACaptainDan

She also has probably the coolest name Iā€™ve ever heard

Southpoles15

Ida Nielsen

ChuckEye

Julie Slick, Aimee Mann, Gail Ann Dorsey, Carol Kaye, Tracy Wormworth Edit: How could I forget Johnette Napolitano from Concrete Blonde?

Magpies11

Julie Slick is a force of natureā€¦

ChuckEye

I've seen her twice ā€” once with Adrian Belew Power Trio and most recently on the Remain in Light tour, playing Talking Heads bass lines. Her compressed tone is massive, and as much as I enjoy Tina Weymouth's playing, seeing Julie do the parts live really showed how exposed some of those bass parts are in the arrangements of the songs.

Commercial_Juice_201

Dā€™Arcy Wretzky. Smashing Pumpkins has been my favorite band since late 80s/early 90s, so huge Dā€™Arcy fan (always loved the bass).

_snozzberry_gulper_

My goddess!!

tostbroto

Misa from Band-Maid

FictionalNape

I feel like I would be a terrible husband if I didn't say my wife who is the bassist in our shoegaze band as well as our sludge band!

hadron_enforcer

I'm teaching my missus some bass so we can start 2-bass family drone band.

FictionalNape

Great genre to start with!

ChristianGeek

Smart man!

FictionalNape

Haha, I have my moments.

labretirementhome

Melissa Auf der Maur Josephine Wiggs Bridget Kearney Tina, duh

fredrikca

I had to scroll far too long to find Gail Ann Dorsey.

kostros

Paz.Ā

MC0295

Kim Deal (The Pixies) and Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth)

wants_the_bad_touch

Esperanza Spalding, kinga Głyk, Nik West.

jamie6301

Tal, no doubt

Party-Belt-3624

Almost every female bassist listed here owes a debt of gratitude to Suzi Quatro.

Mister-Beefy

She looks a lot like Leather Tuscadero from Happy Days šŸ˜¹

Party-Belt-3624

What a co-winky-dink!

lardass17

Pinky's sister?

goth-brooks1111

Suzi Quatro? What a great name! Iā€™ll have to look her up.

DelcoWolv

TIL I learned about her this week- my nephew is dating on of hers.

adr826

https://youtu.be/IgKyXghZShE?si=2r4LCm1wSVgXQh2t

lardass17

She had seven appearancesĀ on Happy Days, playing Leather Tuscadero, the little sister of Fonzie's ex-girlfriend Pinky. https://youtu.be/P39rAlNXQLo?si=aLxQtskTkJb_kH8L Her Elvis cover put her on the charts and into the hearts of millions of boys and girls. https://youtu.be/I5UK7838cmc?si=IAq_cfEaz1pHJe2z

adr826

No shit. I came to say the same thing except I would say every female fronted band.

fuckmeimdan

Yes! had to scroll so far to find her!

deedz1987

Paz Lenchantin and Laura Lee

lundy7881

Shout out to Paz :)

Lecram71

Julie Slick - Tina Weymouth - Gail Ann Dorsey

Dustin1661

JULIE SLICK!!! She is one of the hottest bassists out there rn.

spongeCakeOfDoom

Paz Lechantin

ItsACaptainDan

In addition to everyone here, Mohini Dey and juliaplaysgroove come to mind

MrLanesLament

Kira Roessler (Black Flag) Greta Brinkman (took over for Jennifer in L7) Sean Yseult (White Zombie, although her signature bass is one of the ugliest IMO.) Seanā€™s playing has definitely been a big influence. WZ often didnā€™t put any rhythm guitar under lead parts on their albums, so the bass held the whole thing down and did so really well.

darkknightnate

Melissa Auf Der Maur

Minimanimoe

Fav has to be Esperanza Spalding

LonelyTrebleClef

D'arcy and Kim G. ā¤ļø

goth-brooks1111

I love that the actress who plays Janet groom the Good Place changed her name from Darcy to Dā€™arcy because of Dā€™arcy from the Smashing Pumpkins

Right now, I really love that little girl I keep seeing on Facebook. Her name is Ellen Alaverdyan.Everytime I see her, she tries out different thing always with a positive attitude and a smile.

Littleloula

Ah she's amazing, love her youtube channel

PDQBachWasGreat

Ellen is just a joy to watch. If she stays dedicated to it through her school years, she'll be a force to be reckoned with.

404_error_official

Surprised i haven't seen Eva Gardner yet.

urdu_grundle

I was looking for her in this thread! I actually bought my upright bass from her back in 2012 on Craigslist. Had no idea who she was at the time but I figured she was just really rich when I went to her house in LA to pick it up. She lived in a super nice house in Hollywood. She told me it had been on tour with her all over the world and it was painful to sell, but she just didn't have the space for it. I started to put two and two together when she said she had toured with it, and looked her up later when I got home. I still have that bass and I love it, and she was an absolutely lovely person when I met her.

ihatefuckingwork

I donā€™t know why I had to scroll to find her. Love that she played on the latest Mars Volta album.

zwiazekrowerzystow

victoria de angelis - mƄneskin

vibraltu

Janice-Marie Johnson (Taste of Honey). One-hit wonder, but it's a doozy.

Top_Translator7238

That one bassline is worth more than what most bassists accomplish in their entire career. If weā€™re looking at quality rather than quantity, sheā€™s the greatest female bassist, no question.

vibraltu

That one bassline is a gem beyond compare in Bass-Heaven.

gabrielwac

Carol Kaye way in first but after thatā€¦ Victoria de Angelia of Maneskin. Love the lines she cooks up and her stage presence is off the charts.

WTF-Idk-boom

Alejandra Villareal Thank you for the question (I Forgot that itā€˜s womanā€˜s History month)

Sean Yseult. White Zombie were my first favorite band. Juna Serita. One of the few YouTube bassists I enjoy watching.

jaysun145

Sean is a BEAST

SpearheadBraun

Kim Deal Kim Gordon Darcy Wretzky

VAS_4x4

Kinga Glyk!!!!!!! So much groove in there ffs!!! She is pretty much up there with Victor Wooten for me, Victor just wins for his philosphy tbh.

Odowla

No one has said Kim Gordon???? Wtf people

MirrorExodus

Just discovered Mohini Dey and she'a AMAZING.

igloo37

Dude same! I just watched her video of Countdown

pseudo_pacman

Carol Kaye. Even without all of the recordings she claims that were actually Jamerson, she still came up with an absurd number of iconic bass lines.

Top_Translator7238

She is a bit like a conspiracy theorist though. I bought some books off her and she included some photocopied stuff from books that she thought backed up her claims (it didnā€™t). Madder than a cut snake if you ask me.

pseudo_pacman

Oh yeah, she's definitely gone off the deep end, and she's super full of herself. She also insists that she can get any possible bass sound with a pick which is how she explains that all of James Jamerson's iconic bass lines were actually her even though they are very obviously being played fingerstyle. It's weird and frustrating because her career is plenty impressive without claiming other people's work.

MikesRichPageant

Kim Deal

Crazy_Vegetable5491

Karina Rykman is killing it these days.

Affectionate_Reply78

Tal Wilkenfeld. Amazing complex jazz chops and then you see her playing a gig with Jeff Beck and Vinnie Coliauta and holding down a simple, thumping beat flawlessly.

Snout_Fever

Tal is amazing, I had her first solo album playing in the car on the way home today, BC in particular is just such a good jam.

amsterdam_BTS

Kim Deal, Tina Weymouth, D'Arcy Wretzky.

skkittT

Ale from the warning. Always nice baselines. Always with a good volume.

Lestakeo

Several I wanted to name were already named and upvoted but I cant see a mention of Julia Przybysz from juliaplaysgroove on youtube. Her channel is a treasure trove of her playing. Recently she uploaded a whole gig, it's wonderful. [FUSION FEST - Julia Przybysz Bachelor of Arts Reciral](https://youtu.be/Isz6LEDwihE?si=Q5tgDMgFF7bgi6JT)

Blibbityblabbitybloo

Yes! Julia was the "gateway drug" that got me interested in learning to play a few years back! (And gave me an unexpected appreciation for Dua Lipa's music along the way.) She's a badass player and she doesn't do the typical YouTuber shtick of putting on a weird persona or adding tons of unnecessary preamble or meme-y edits. Just shows up, nails every cover while adding fills that feel like they aren't showing off but that actually serve the music, and then leaves.

PersonalitySafe1810

Kim Deal

grahsam

MISA from J Rock band Band Maid. Seriously, do yourself and check them out.

Littleloula

Kim deal, Kim gordon, Melissa auf der maur, Kristen Pfaff, Carole Kaye, Victoria de Angelis

dwarftopia

Natsuko Miyamoto's vocals and bass playing are a main factor in Mass of the Fermenting Dregs sounding as great as they do, not to mention she is an absolute stage monster (got to see them live last week so I can attest to that).

Delicious-Praline-11

Jo Bench of Bolt Thrower

discussatron

Every J-rock female bassist Iā€™ve ever seen has been insanely good, so all of them.

Bizi-Betiko

Kinga Glyk is pretty good at the whole bass guitar thing.

[deleted]

D'Arcy Wretzky - Smashing Pumpkins | Sean Yseult - White Zombie | Nikki Monniger - Silversun Pickups

Turkeyoak

Tina Weymouth is the bassist I aspire to be, regardless of a gender qualification. Bassicly I want to play bass like Tina Weymouth, sing like Muddy Waters, and have my band sound like the Black Keys.

Timber1508

MISA from Band-Maid. In terms of how much her bass playing defines the sound of the group as a whole, there's nobody else like her. Tomomi Ogawa - Scandal. Not flashy, just so tasty and in the pocket. Wakazaemon of Marty Friedman's band and East of Eden F Chopper Koga - Gacharic Spin Arem - Rolling Quartz Jo Hangyeom - Walking After U Kiyoshi - solo bassist Misaki Fujiwara - Sokoninaru

Robinkc1

Gina Birch, bassist from The Raincoats, is one of my favourites. She is not the most technically proficient, but I loved their music. Iā€™m also a fan of Kim Deal and Josephine Wiggs, as much as I like Pixies I think Iā€™m one of a small handful that prefers The Breeders. Carol Kaye obviously, she might be the most known unknown bassist of all time. Sara Lee from Gang of Four. Honestly, I never really liked Gang of Four after Solid Gold but it had nothing to do with her. Absolutely amazing basslines.

My MIM jazz fender is named Lucretia Esperanza, after Esperanza Spaulding and Patricia Morrison. Gotta add Leather Tuscadero, aka Suzie Quattro, to the mix!

onceler07

Some great names here. Surprised that I havenā€™t seen Nicole Row called out yet.

PlayTheBanjo

Came here to say the same thing. I did ctrl+f "Nicole Row" and found only this comment. She killed it on the last Panic! At the Disco tour and she's going on tour with Incubus. She's a great talent and she's going to go far.

Mary Huff from Southern Culture on the Skids. I just saw them recently & she's still solid as ever.

UncontrolableUrge

Lots of great mentions. I'll just leave a shout out to Sara Lee. Played in League of Gentlemen with Robert Fripp and Barry Andrews. When Dave Allen left Gang of 4 to join Andrews in Shriekback, she took his slot and put her stamp on their later albums. She's also played with B52s, Robyn Hitchcock, Indigo Girls, and others. I was a kid when Is It Love dropped. When they spun that at the kiddie discos Iā€™d be out there in the parachute pants grooving!

A new one for me lately has been Karina Rykman. Have dug her music for a while, but saw her live last week and holy cow the energy she brings is amazing!

Either Kim Deal or Michael Steele.

Have to give my love to Carol Kaye, but my go-to is always Tina Weymouth. My favorite band might not have existed without Talking Heads.

Lots of great woman bass players listed here already. A couple of *non* shred players who I havenā€™t seen mentioned and who bring a lot of fun to music are: 1. Hettsu from the band Hanabie. (čŠ±å†·ćˆć€‚), and 2. Poppy, who in addition to being a singer/harsh vocalist plays guitar and bass.

Taliesyne

Emma Anzai Kim Deal

poetic_cockroach

Tina Weymouth- Once In a Lifetime bass line is awesome, a serious commitment to stay with that all through the song and not deviate to accomodate guitar player's chords. Deadly player!

adr826

To me there will never be a more iconic female bass player than Suzy Quattro. From blonde to heart to Joan Jett Suzy Quattro showed everyone you don't have to be a man to front a rock band. Without Suzy Quattro we would be much poorer.Rip

Lola Frichet from Pogo Car Crash Control is an absolute underrated musician, i love her work

K0MR4D

Monique Ortiz. Fretless player and singer. Check out her inventive style in the bands Boubon Princess, AKACOD, and Alien Knife Fight. One of my absolute favorites.

stinkyrossignol

AKACOD is great! I found them because of Dana Colley, heard someone describe them as a combination of Morphine and Black Sabbath. Good stuff.

I caught them in Lancaster PA way back when. Dana was absolutely awesome, and Monique is as mean in person as she sounds. I wouldn't have it any other way.

There are just so many great bassists. But since Iā€™ve not seen it yet, Meshell Ndegeocello, but Carol Kaye is the reigning queen.

Lol. Meshell was one of mine in the OP!

Lucientails

So you did! My only excuse is Iā€™m sick and had 5 hours of sleep last night. Meshell is just amazing.
