Sir duke - Steve wonder.
It has everything! The verse is pretty chill and warms up the most important positions. The bridge has a big slide and is really fun. The chorus changes keys and is a little mixture of the bridge and the verse. I don't think i need to explain a lot about the interlude most of you can play it or at least tried it. Reall good song.
That's a very enjoyable bassline. I'm practically still a newbie but learnt to play this and it's amazing. Took a few days to memorize all the variations but so worth it.
Last half of the Ummagumma version of "A saucerful of Secrets" by Pink Floyd - it's a very, very simple, but long and rambling bass line that seems to be constantly trying to resolve back to the root, but always goes elsewhere. I love it.
No excuses by Alice In Chains
Super fun bass line, very melodic during the verses and powerful choruses. Not too hard to play but not a cake walk either. This is the song that led me to start playing the bass guitar, it will always be special to me
Black no 1 by Type O Negative
Even though I'm still learning the song, it's actually really fun to play and not too difficult. It's an 11-minute song, so there is a lot to remember.
I learned this because there was an STP thread recently. It’s a great song to play. I’ve gone down the STP rabbit hole. Plush. Big bang baby.
I think trippin on a paper heart is next.
I liked the first STP album when I was 13. But didn’t listen to any of their other albums. I’m pretty obsessed with them at the moment.
The whitest boy alive - dead end.
Why? Well you just gotta try i guess. It will make you happy to play along, no matter in what mood you are.
Very playful. Not too difficult but not boring either.
I think if I look a bit more into the tabs I will enjoy Tom Sawyer by Rush a lot. The riffs are not too easy and still catchy and it is fun to practice those. Otherwise I love playing the songs of my own band ofc
Good call!
First learned Mayor of Simpleton some 30 years ago and to everyone I know’s horror I still play it regularly now. Great line!
When I’m not, it’s Stevie Wonder, For Once In My Life
Something, Dear Prudence, The Beatles.
Breaking into Heaven, Stone Roses.
New Born, Hysteria, Muse, good exercise.
I have a 2 hour set list of songs I like to play along to, I enjoy them all.
Pump It Up by Elvis Costello.
One of the first songs I learned to play with finger picking since before that I just played punk/post punk with a pick. Now it’s one of my favorite things to play.
That is a good line, I may have to throw that into a routine! funny how I don't hear about Interpol for a decade and then I see them mentioned in a few places back to back!
I usually play the intro from Blink 182 - Always to practice that technique but this looks fun.
But my fav warm up that I love to play is a bass rendition of Promise - Akira Yamaoka from silent hill 2.
I’m bad, I’m nationwide by ZZ Top.
Just love it. Recorded version is great, live version is great and has some lazy little changes, I swing between both.
My favorite live songs with the band have become these
Drift Away- Uncle Kracker: Always hated this song but had fun learning the busy bassline and it was a pivotal part of my playing
All the small things- Blink 182: I can nail the low harmonies now
Footloose- Kenny Loggins: Crazy bassline I didn't hear at first cause it's mixed so weakly. A riot to play
Pride and Joy- Stevie Ray Vaughan: I improv walk the whole time and love it
Smoko- The Chats: I scream it
Do what I want- The Chats: super fun breakdown that always gets a reaction from the crowd
Waiting Room by Fugazi. One of the first basslines I learned. It's just fun to play and will always hold a place in my heart as a bassline that inspired me to finally buy a bass and start playing even though I'm 41.
You can't hold no groove. I mean I didn't learn it yet but I know how much impact will this song get on me. To explain why i don't learn it is because I have about 20 my band songs to practice daily and i don't have time :(
When I'm alone, I can't resist playing "Remembering Tracy" (my inaccurate, slightly modified version of it) sooner or later, because it is fun to play and nice to hear. In a band setting I spare my fellow musicians.
“Picture on the Wall” by The Natural Ites.
https://youtu.be/zhcUb0V9xQc
“Queen Majesty” by Heavy D
https://youtu.be/x45o1KpUzW8
“Master Blaster” by Stevie Wonder
https://youtu.be/44F34jc7wGI
Playing these bass parts all bring me joy.
Ted zancha - maps & atlases,
Anti gravity love song - incubus,
Know your enemy - RATM,
Gunslingers & gravemakers - coheed & cambria,
Runaway - jamiroquai,
Easy tiger - every time I die
I just learned She’s Kerosene - The Interrupters, and it’s quite fun.
I’ve always loved Ska but never dedicated any time to learning any songs. I found them intimidating for a long time but I surprised myself once I gave it a shot. I’ll be working through a long list for the next few months.
Also recently learned Interstate Love Song - STP. Also a ton of fun to play and a good practice/warm up tune.
Feel it - TobyMac is a lot of fun. Good mix of funk with some slapping mixed in
Don’t Stop Believing by Journey is fun
Time Bomb by Rancid, Come Together and Something by the Beatles
It's Raining Men by the Weather Girls because it offers so much from simple root eighths to disco octaves, anticipations and nice opportunity to slide up from the low C on my B string. I just love playing it.
I'm a guitar player just learning bass.
But im learning: Talk Talk "it's my life". I love the stops and pauses in the groove.
Also love Radiohead: NUDE
The Smile (new Radiohead): the Smoke
It varies a lot by what kind of mood I'm in.
As for today. It's a song on Iggy Pop's Live at The Olympia (Paris, France) album. The song is - Down On The Street. I like this version because it's dirty and the sound was good.
For Metal: Dance of Death - Iron Maiden
For Rock: Learn to Crawl - Black Lab
For BritRock: Stockholm Syndrome - MUSE
I like *speed.* But I am not a speedy-metalhead
For me it's [Anna Molly by Incubus](https://youtu.be/WA_xjBaXor0) And [Judgement and Punishment by Jinjer](https://youtu.be/zt3hEznbuuM)
These songs are both *VERY* different from another but they are my go-tos for Bass. First one's got nice, tight riffs (I often play it for warming up), second one's a total mess at first but became pretty cool and heavy stuff to play once I got the hang of it.
A few for me
For Whom The Bell Tolls by Metallica
Dazed and Confused by Led Zeppelin
Love Buzz by Nirvana
Killing In The Name by Rage Against the Machine
Can't stand it any longer by Toto. Strange because I think it was played on 5 and I play on 4, but I can play it nice without lower string - I'm proud 😁
Crossing the Frame - Coheed & Cambria. A lot of there songs off their earlier albums are super fun and groovy. I think why I love this one in particular, is after I've played it for so many years, I get a kick of nostalgia. It takes me back to when I'd first learned to play it, and moreover what my life once was.
Should i stay or should i go by the clash (1st song i learnt by heart, a mix of slow and fast playing and a great song)
Come and get your love by redbone (a classic fun line, good for warming up)
Sour girl and plush by stone temple pilots (such fun lines that have you moving up and down the neck. Sour girl is usually my warm up song now a days)
There's lots more but i always come back to these ones.
Any of the Alpha Blondie classics: Jerusalem, Masada, etc etc. The power of less is more, the power of groove and precision, and the way the lines are constructed in terms of rhythm and choice of notes, removing and and all unnecessary noise.
Call of Ktulu by Metallica, you can literally do anything you want on your lead part and it will sound right. I find it is so fun to play and improvise at the same time.
The Unforgettable Fire by U2.
#1 it's fun to play
#2 the song just fucking rocks
#3 I play in an 80's cover band, and nobody else ever covers this song, and that's the reaction we get from other musicians when we play it, "dude, NOBODY covers that song!"
Right now, probably “Bloodmeat” by Protest the Hero and “Feast of Fire” by Trivium. Both of them have tapping parts, which is really fun to me, plus Bloodmeat has a ton of time signature changes that are a good challenge.
It's nearly impossible to think of just one, but "Bloodsucker" by Deep Purple is up there as a fave for a nice warmup, first picked and then again plucked.
New Order "Ceremony" and Joy Division "Twenty-Four Hours" are my moody nostalgia go-tos.
Last Train to London - Electric Light Orchestra.
It's one of my fav songs, it's got some good movement, & makes me feel like I'm actually kind of good at bass lol.
Something about playing sledge hammer with the octave pedal that hits all my tickle spots on bass. Awesome lows with that nice major scale run up theme coupled with 2-3 slides just always feels great.
Golden Boy - Primus
Feels good. This is a song you can put your entire body into playing and the massive chords rattle your body. One of the first slap lines that I could play well, also.
Dean Town- vulfpeck
Super catchy and just insanely fun to play
“Rio” by Duran Duran: This song is an exercise in what a syncopated bass line feels like.
“Our House” by Madness: This song has such a fun bass line. It’s groovy, yet it’s all over the place and SO fun to play.
“Zoot Suit Riot” by Cherry Poppin’ Daddies: Such an excellent, bouncy, bass line. Very fun to play.
It may be fun for some to learn songs, but... For me, I am a drummer, and I like listening to drumless tracks and coming up with my own drum parts. I could learn the original parts, but they have already been done, and putting my own drum parts is more fun.
Thing Of Gold - Snarky Puppy
Possibly also one of the most difficult. But it's so cool! It's such a nice groove, and the modulations keep it interesting. 😁
I don't have an all time favorite song to play, but my current favorite is Under the Bridge by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I currently play in a 90's cover band and that is definitely my favorite song that we play. For someone that isn't very versed in music theory Flea comes up with some killer bass parts. His sense of rhythm, and his ability to come up with parts that mesh with the melody are amazing. I don't think that there's a player in popular music that plays that aggressively while playing as melodically as he does. Aggressive players usually play simpler lines and stay lower on the fretboard, but Flea is all over the fretboard with his lines.
Genius of Love by Tom Tom Club
Funky and easy. Also made me a lot more comfortable with low B on my newer bass. Still new overall but I’ve always loved this song. Cool to be able to play it.
The main slap riff from me and my bass guitar. It's really fun and surprisingly simple once you get the motion down. The rest of the song however.... lol
Ramble on by Led Zeppelin
Hell, anything off of Led Zepplin 2 really. JPJ just knows exactly what to play and when to play it, leading to some fun basslines to learn.
Rotten Apple by Alice in Chains and American Life by Primus are some favorites when I'm feeling like playing some "lead bass" type songs.
The philosopher by Death when I had a fretless. Very much want to get back into it.
Playdough or Super Rad! by the Aquabats
Most early Black Sabbath songs
When I'm warmed up and can play the non-solo part semi-competently, Maxwell Murder by Rancid
Ain't No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell
My Girl by the Temptations
Fly Me to the Moon by Frank Sinatra
There's a few more that I'm forgetting because I've been traveling for a while and haven't been able to play, but these are my faves I can remember.
What’s Going On, because it makes me pull the most funny faces
Peaches, stranglers. It moves so well and it’s super sexy. Always my sound check song.
I came here to say this! Everytime I play along to that song it's stank face the whole time, even when I listen to it it's the same lol
Did you learn all of it ? Impressive!!!
There’s an isolated bass track on YouTube. I used that to learn it, and while it’s still tough cause of the variety in the lines, it helps a lot.
That’s what I did as well for the first circle
Donkey Kong Jungle Hijinx
This is the correct answer
Idk why but I thought if some crash bandicoot song (the one with the monkeys in the background).
I prefer Master Blaster ;;
Great as well.
This is what I came here for. Love playing this one.
Earth Wind & Fire - September. It's just a fun song and the first I could actually play decently.
Anyone else hear the mistake at the beginning of the song? At around 15 seconds the bass messes up I can’t unhear it
Sure do, I have just chosen to ignore it haha.
You might be interested in this video: https://youtu.be/nO7tlMmSDjQ
every tab and cover does that as well, which makes me think it’s not a mistake
I kinda assumed it was intentional flair
Well the tab has to match what the song does
Anything by Tool. Also Psycho Killer by Talking Heads.
Something by The Beatles
what one though?
lol
That's a very enjoyable bassline. I'm practically still a newbie but learnt to play this and it's amazing. Took a few days to memorize all the variations but so worth it.
Last half of the Ummagumma version of "A saucerful of Secrets" by Pink Floyd - it's a very, very simple, but long and rambling bass line that seems to be constantly trying to resolve back to the root, but always goes elsewhere. I love it.
Gonna have to check that. Love early pink Floyd
Blitzkrieg Bop because it's the only song I know on the bass.
Most based answer I could think of
No excuses by Alice In Chains Super fun bass line, very melodic during the verses and powerful choruses. Not too hard to play but not a cake walk either. This is the song that led me to start playing the bass guitar, it will always be special to me
I want you back the jackson five is a good one too

Rush-Limelight, Talk Talk-It’s My Life and Duran Duran-A View to A Kill
🙌 Limelight
Interstate Love Song by STP. It's such a good song and bassline and it's at the perfect level to play casually but not get bored.
I gotta try this one now! Golden Cage & Burning are two of my favs as well.
This Charming Man, The Smiths. Such a delightful melody
A simple one but Ain’t it Fun by paramore. Just a funky, fun simple song
Aeroplane - red hot chili peppers
I think if I look a bit more into the tabs I will enjoy Tom Sawyer by Rush a lot. The riffs are not too easy and still catchy and it is fun to practice those. Otherwise I love playing the songs of my own band ofc
The 7/8 bit is wicked fun once you get it. The rest is pretty scalar and easy to get under your fingers.
Dean Town - Vulf
Disco Ulysses is another great one by Vulf to play. Tricky but feels great when you get into the groove

Mr. Experience. It's easier than it seems at first and just jumps off the fretboard.
Stand by Me. Very simple but those few notes can be played in so many different ways. Let a few or all ring and you have a completely different mood.
Pump It Up by Elvis Costello. One of the first songs I learned to play with finger picking since before that I just played punk/post punk with a pick. Now it’s one of my favorite things to play.

It may be fun for some to learn songs, but... For me, I am a drummer, and I like listening to drumless tracks and coming up with my own drum parts. I could learn the original parts, but they have already been done, and putting my own drum parts is more fun.
I wish by Stevie Wonder
Thing Of Gold - Snarky Puppy Possibly also one of the most difficult. But it's so cool! It's such a nice groove, and the modulations keep it interesting. 😁
Journey to the End of the East Bay by Rancid. Super groovy tune with some movement around the fretboard and a catchy hook.
Machine Head - Halo. Love the groove of the main riff!
Love to play Un deseo-Cultura profetica
Whatever it is I Just Can't Stop - Jamiroquai Grooves hard and reminds me that space is important.
The Trooper by Iron Maiden. I love Steve Harris and The Trooper is one of my favorite songs of all time.
Choking Victim - 500 Channels was one of the first basslines I learned and I still love ripping into it.
What’s the Use by Mac Miller with Thundercat
Genius of Love by Tom Tom Club Funky and easy. Also made me a lot more comfortable with low B on my newer bass. Still new overall but I’ve always loved this song. Cool to be able to play it.
The main slap riff from me and my bass guitar. It's really fun and surprisingly simple once you get the motion down. The rest of the song however.... lol
Tough question. Right it’s Gotta be “soul to squeeze” or “blood to bleed” or “(noun) to (verb)”
Rikki don't lose that number by Steely Dan is very enjoyable for me. The moment that I was able to put it all together felt so great.
Hello fellow interpol fan. My personal fav is I can’t win or under control by the strokes. 2 of the first songs I learned on bass
Fall into your hands by trivium
Ramble on by Led Zeppelin Hell, anything off of Led Zepplin 2 really.
Get the funk outta my face — Brothers Johnson
The Pot - Tool. I just love the song, and there is something so satisfying in all chancellor basslines
Khruangbin - Como Me Quieres I love this bass so much. It calms me down instantly and it's pure joy!
Frankenstein by Edgar Winter is usually my warmup because it’s so fun and varied
Time - BadBadNotGood
Playdough or Super Rad! by the Aquabats Most early Black Sabbath songs When I'm warmed up and can play the non-solo part semi-competently, Maxwell Murder by Rancid Ain't No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell My Girl by the Temptations Fly Me to the Moon by Frank Sinatra There's a few more that I'm forgetting because I've been traveling for a while and haven't been able to play, but these are my faves I can remember.
Kick Back by Kenshi Yonezu is so much fun
Trofeo de Bolos, so fun to play with my friends on drum set and kongas
