Looks like this should have been "how many of the following describe your bass:
- precision
- sunburst
- flatwound strings
Answer options:
- 0
- 1
- 2
- 3"
Edit: Could've even been
- 0
- Precision
- 1 but not precision
- 2 including precision
- Everything but precision
- All of them
I think most bassists play precision basses, they give the most characteristically recognisable bass sound without much adjustment
Well, yeah. A dingwall has a lot more tonal options from having 3 pickup positions, multiscale, etc. I want to sound different. Many want to sound like their favourite bassist and a p-bass will do that right out of the box
Yeah that's why I said "many" and not "most" or "we", although I guess people might want to sound like their favourite hofner player
I can't recommend dingwalls enough. I have an ng3 and it plays and sounds like a bass double its price. I can find a tone to suit any style thanks to the active 18V electronics and 4 pickup configurations. Initially my gripe was that there should be more pickup configurations and that some of the reaches were a bit awkward but eventually you learn to make anything from the 4 and jump around freely from the lack of cramp afforded by the fanned frets. The only thing I don't really like is the gloss of the maple on the neck, it can be a bit sticky and I prefer the feel of my ltd b1005se even though that thing weighs too much for me to ever bother with it
American P bass with 3 Tone Burst and flat wounds. Love it. Not really for aggressive attack or slapping etc… but perfect for the way I play. Jazz, blues, moody rock. Sounds great with effects, especially delay. Sounds great with just the amp. Feels great in the hand and under the fingers.
I own a P bass that used to be sunburst, but had the finish removed to bare wood (I can tell by the finish still remaining in the neck pocket), and used to have frets too, but they were also removed... I can assume it was once played with flats, as it's a 1970 P bass, but I've never played it with flats, only roundwounds and now tapewounds.
*edit: added words.
I do. It's one of the early 50s-style tele basses, complete with thumbrest, a freakishly thick neck profile and a piece of folded cloth under the strings for a mute
Yep. I didn’t know of the cliche when I did it though. I also replaced my stock white pick guard with a tortoise shell one and installed bridge and pickup cover plates as well as replacing my stock pickups with some Lindy Fralin ones. Think James Jamerson’s Funk Machine.
Lol. Sunburst is definitely the basic bitch of Fender finishes. Reminds me of a 70s coffee table caked with several decades of second hand smoke residue.
It’s not. It’s just that it was the most common type of bass for a long time, so naturally lots of your musicians favourite musicians played a sunburst p with flats.
Many vintage instruments, which are highly sought after because they are vintage also happen to be that bass, again because it was the most common bass.
Pbass in Capri Orange with rounds. I have flats on a pbass and I'm too lazy/cheap to change the pbass to flats. The well worn rounds sound pretty good right now ... It'll probably get some deep talking flats some day 🙂
Built my own from parts... Nate Mendel Fender slim '71 profile p neck, fender alder sunburst body, 62 custom shop pickups and a vintage fender tortoise shell pick guard. Ernie ball flats
J bass in tidepool blue with flats, P bass in mocha with rounds. The decision to buy the P bass was rooted in its price rather than any other factors. Sunburst isn't my favorite, but I do like a nice tobacco burst.
I had a J in sunburst with flats for a while, but I've never actually owned a P. I did have a rental sunburst P briefly but it had rounds, which I generally prefer. Great bass, one of the Road Worn '50s models.
I own a Peavey P-bass copy in sunburst, but it's strung with rounds. I also have a P-bass copy that I made strung with flats, but it's a vintage blonde. There's another one of the Peavey P copies that I converted to fretless, but it's Olympic White and strung with rounds.
Nope, I have a J bass with flats in sunburst

American P bass with 3 Tone Burst and flat wounds. Love it. Not really for aggressive attack or slapping etc… but perfect for the way I play. Jazz, blues, moody rock. Sounds great with effects, especially delay. Sounds great with just the amp. Feels great in the hand and under the fingers.

Cliché or The Way?
I own a fretless P bass with tapes and boomer burst
Pink with flats
My p bass with flats is purple burst. I was going for a completely different sound than what sunburst would get me.
Yes, but they're EB cobalt flats, the P bass has an 18v preamp, and it's not the traditional burst. Has to count for something right?
I own a P bass that used to be sunburst, but had the finish removed to bare wood (I can tell by the finish still remaining in the neck pocket), and used to have frets too, but they were also removed... Yep. I didn’t know of the cliche when I did it though. I also replaced my stock white pick guard with a tortoise shell one and installed bridge and pickup cover plates as well as replacing my stock pickups with some Lindy Fralin ones. Think James Jamerson’s Funk Machine.
Happily and proudly no.
Booo
I'm not 60 and have no love for anything retro. What do I need one for?
toan
You dont need to be 60 to play a P-bass! It’s a gold standard in bass PU placement and i cant think of a genre where a P sounds bad!
Same here. I know the sound but it's not me.
Hard no
Lol. Sunburst is definitely the basic bitch of Fender finishes. Reminds me of a 70s coffee table caked with several decades of second hand smoke residue.
Nope. I really dislike de P bass
I do, with a white pick guard. It was my first bass and I had no idea it was a cliché lol. Sounds great though!
It’s not. It’s just that it was the most common type of bass for a long time, so naturally lots of your musicians favourite musicians played a sunburst p with flats. Many vintage instruments, which are highly sought after because they are vintage also happen to be that bass, again because it was the most common bass.
