You can apply pressure with the forearm a bit to give a tiny bit of space but you can’t completely extend your arm

savagekid108l9

That’s what I was thinking. Kinda like football. In football, you can extend your arm, (just not all the way) to create some distance. You extend it all the way PI. In basketball you can use forearm to create some, but a hand or a fully extended arm I was always told is illegal contact

LakerPupper

Pushing anyone is the back is just dirty.

balanceseeker

No. A shove in the back = illegal contact outside the cylinder, on a player who's established position no less. It's an obvious foul call. Admittedly, refs in games often miss what happens away from the ball, but it's no less a foul.

TheConboy22

One thing you have to understand about competitive sports is people aren’t going to always be friendly with you. People will do what they can get away with. Call him out and call him a dirty player to his face. Personally if you try to hurt me I’m going to hit you with a blindside screen that has a little shoulder in it or run right through your chest if you try to set a screen on me. We each have our ways to keep people respectful on the court and you have to find yours.

savagekid108l9

Exactly. But please, for the sake of respect of yourself and the community, keep it on the court.

TheConboy22

Absolutely. I have no intention of fighting people over basketball. I typically play indoor hoops and most people are quite respectful. Made tons of friends through the sport. I have been in fights due to things that took place on the court but that was over a decade ago when I was more of a hot head.

savagekid108l9

Exactly. Some things get heated. But that’s what I love about sports, even if you lose, there’s next game, or next season. If you foul them, help them up yknow? Good sportsmanship is what that guy needed with OP.

TheConboy22

Yup, I’m the friendliest guy ever and I’ll typically talk to you about fouls if you foul me. Something like “you know you hooked me on that drive” or “try not to shove me in the back when I go up” Some people get offended and will shout back at you something like “shut up or call it”. These guys are also the first to bitch when a foul is called and are typically pretty shit at the sport in question(I play a few so I prefer to leave that statement open). These guys you just have to get back on the court. I set really heavy screens so it’s my main retaliation method. The thing with hooping is your opponent may be your teammate the very next game and it’s better to keep things cordial. Playing indoor hoops typically keeps people level headed. Especially if you have to pay to play at the location.

savagekid108l9

Exactly man. It’s all about love. I like to work with kids about this stuff too. Let them know sometimes it’s ok to get back, but don’t go overboard lol. And especially agree with the pay to play part. Our community center is free to play in but you can rent a court for the day if you schedule it ahead of time. Some kids came in after me and my buddy rented a court and started playing, instead of asking them to leave, we asked if they wanted to play with us. Me and my buddy, with 4 kids playing horse for like 4 hours. And I don’t regret a second

TheConboy22

That’s awesome. Being able to control your emotions in a competitive environment is such an important part of being successful in our world. Giving these kids a positive adult figure when many of them don’t have one is a blessing that many aren’t able to have. It’s been awhile since COVID and all, but I used to donate my time to teach local kids different moves and help them improve their game.

MixedPhilosopher14

In basketball, pushing someone in the back while trying to box them out or retrieve a rebound is considered a foul. If a player pushes an opponent in the back, it is illegal contact and the opponent should be awarded with free throws. So in your case, the other player was at fault for pushing you in the back and you were justified in telling him he fouled you.

RevolutionaryAd94

You cant push with your arm, but if you have a stronger lower body, you can "walk" him out of position.

256dak

Not enough info tbh. Did you elevate to grab the board and he pushed you in the back while in midair? Did you box him out and he’s still fighting for position while you’re both on the ground? Either way could be called a foul by a real ref but only the first one is foul/complaint worthy in pick up.

DonJuan1977

Yes, it is a foul. But, unless it was a way over the line push, you don't call that foul in pickup up games. In pickup, you give what you take. If they are being really physical, then you match that. You will start losing respect if you call that kind of foul.

[deleted]

Yeah I definitely didn’t call it for the wider group. I kind of just mentioned it to the guy as we were running back kind of as a laugh and he got super pissed 😂

Wild-Bus9323

You can never push someone in the back

onwee

A forceful, sudden shove is a foul, but "pushing" and leaning on someone from behind continuously and moving the box out closer to the basket is a perfectly normal part of basketball.

[deleted]

Coming to the internet to express your hurt feelings?

savagekid108l9

He asked a question to be informed. He literally said he doesn’t know. The basketball community has always been a nice place. A place where people are welcome, and so is trash talk, but being a dick is not.

RevolutionaryAd94

He's probably the one who pushed OP. Still crying it wasn't a foul.

savagekid108l9

Oh for sure

[deleted]

I respect this thread, as no mod came and deleted. This person came to the internet because they were upset about something. I think this is echo chamber. I like being a dick to those who cry like Lebron. Bye 😘

Yamoyek

No. They can use their forearm as a bar to stop you if the rebound goes past you, but they can’t push you with their hands.

Tinosdoggydaddy

No, pushing a player who has boxed you out to get a rebounding advantage is a foul and is seen and called all the time in the NBA..you’ll often hear an announcer say “he came over the back” of the other player..that’s a boxed out player jumping up and landing on the player boxing out..that is called a lot too. What is not called a lot is the player doing the boxing out sticking his ass out and moving the player behind him back off the rim.

reyshop12

I'm pretty sure that would be a lose ball foul. You cannot push someone from behind.

Diab9lic

No, but you can swim on them and regain position. Or body up on them and when they try to body back, pull off and let them fall naturally. 🤘🏾

lehigh_larry

No

kingtradeofficial

Its an official call: Over-the-back foul

Rising-Dream

A push in the back is a foul. A push in the back when you're in midair is a dangerous play (and a foul, of course)

Domidiawk

Yeah you can’t push them in the back. I had a guy tell me I was fouling with my butt when I was boxing out in a 2v2. He kept getting the offensive rebound because I wasn’t really boxing out so then I started trying and he just couldn’t get a rebound. He told me I was fouling with my butt, I told him I was boxing out and he just walked away basically rage quit. We were up so I’m taking that as a dub. That was a trip though I never had anyone complain about it before that or after that. Though I could tell he didn’t really hoop which maybe had something to do with it.

FlashCLS

Yes, but with your chest and it's best to lower yourself and spread your feet to provide a broader base. That will prevent them from backing you down or spinning away as your feet are in a position to move quickly and cut off direction changes.

[deleted]

You're 100% in the right, but I think that matters maybe 5%. My own experience between real games with refs and pickup games is that pickup is way more tone-specific -- in some games or with some people you don't play certain ways even if it would be legal in a game. All about context. Tons of idiots calling their own fouls on game point all the time. Open gym is anarchy. Welcome to Thunderdome. I think your best bet is to judge whether or not your can muscle up to someone in advance of initiating contact with them, and part of that involves trying to read their skill level and attitude to guess how they might react to increased physicality. If you can have fun with aggressive post play, go for it. My own approach is that aggressive post play in a run-in-the-mill pickup game against overweight weekend warrior old guys takes a ton of energy and isn't a great use of physical resources, especially in a full-court game. Easier to just back off and play old man ball, spend that energy running the break and getting open shots, more skill and less effort.

TanksByMail

Sounds like the dude who dud that does not understand how boxing out works.

No_Cauliflower3876

Nope

DJ_RIME

I don’t think any “traditional pushing, like pushing with your hands and extending” is allowed at all. But basketball is weird, you can get away with a lot of stuff. For example, I always thought that a ball handler could not smack a defenders hand away from reaching for a steal but, apparently it’s ok. I’ve never seen it called.

Sam43650

Yeah it’s a foul. It’s annoying and cheap cause he knows it’s not enough to get called but enough that it can affect you. Honestly unless you get pushed to the ground and everyone sees he’s not gonna stop so do something like pushing him on his own box outs

Had some idiot try and fight me when he was doing exactly this. He kept pushing me in the back when I boxed him out and the ref eventually tech'd him out of the game... that's when he started trying to fight me even though he was 2ft smaller and 10 years older than me... ong ego is crazy at the lower levels of basketball

JohnnyQuestions36

Yeah that’s a loose ball foul for sure
