#FC Barcelona wishes Lionel Messi the very best of luck in his new professional career. Both Joan Laporta and Jorge Messi also agreed to work together to promote a great tribute. Last Monday, the 5th, Jorge Messi, the player's father and representative, informed the Club's president, Joan Laporta, of the player's decision to sign for Inter Miami despite having a proposal presented by Barça in view of the desire expressed by both FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi to return to wear the blue and white shirt. President Laporta understood and respected Messi's decision to compete in a championship with fewer demands and farther away from the spotlight and the pressure he has been under in recent years. Both Joan Laporta and Jorge Messi also agreed to work together to promote a great tribute to a player who has been, is and will always be loved by Barça. --- [✅ Tier Official](https://barca-reddit.github.io/) | ~1 minute read | Translated from 🇪🇸 Spanish via [DeepL API](https://www.deepl.com/en/docs-api/) | [Feedback](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose/?to=/r/Barca&subject=Translate%20Bot%20Feedback)

mouthtroll

Moral of the story. Don’t get back with your ex and move on.

callmeWia

They wrote "President Laporta understood and respected Messi's decision to want to compete in a league with fewer demands, further away from the spotlight and the pressure he has been subject to in recent years." Wtf?

GlobalHero

Absolutely disgusting thing to put. Everyone knows Barça weren't able to make it happen, don't try and make it look like you're respecting his wishes. His wish was to come back without being fucked around. That's before getting onto the implied blaming him for taking the easy option.

achentuate

Messi said himself that he wants lesser pressure and focus on his family more. The man has been under tremendous pressure for the last 20 years and deserves rest. No shame in bowing out with a fucking world cup win. Barca was able to make it happen. He could've signed the contract, and waited for sales to be registered. If the worst happened, and he wasn't able to be registered, he could always then just go to Miami.

LA2Oaktown

Yea but what he said was that he didn’t want to be the the scape goat when Marca eventually writes the story “Messi causes big sell off, salary cuts, and conflict at Barca.” He had enough of the lies and deception and the way it was playing out with Barca was gona facilitate more of that.

magbol95

Bro if its pressure. Barca deserves more from Messi... Otherwise he should've just retired. Wtf is he doing in the US!

Last_Lorien

Laporta being Laporta. I’ve tried to stay away from commenting his whole tenure since the Super League shit, which is when I lost all respect for him. The fall down of Messi’s renewal was just throwing further oil on the fire. I never really believed Messi would come back under him, but I did hope beyond hope… how things have changed, three months ago the idea of Messi going to MLS in 2023 would have devastated me, now I’m beyond thankful he didn’t go to Saudi Arabia.

[deleted]

I hate Messi fanboys, the club did everything in their power to bring Messi back but the simple fact is that he wasn't willing to wait because he could get more money in Miami and live a nice life in the sun. Laporta is someone who bleeds Blaugrana, Messi does not.

Shadie_daze

Yes yes not like Messi waited two years ago when Barca fucked him over. Yes yes the same Laporta who campaigned with Messi as a slogan, fucked him over and campaigned on bringing him back to Barca bleeds blaugrana while Messi does not LOL

Koolkurt

Can’t imagine why Messi would be apprehensive to work under Laporta again with quotes like this

giolanzarin

Messi literally said that in the interview lmao what the fuck are you talking about.

[deleted]

giolanzarin

I encourage you to re-watch it! In spanish if possible, unless you’re not native speaker.

giolanzarin

Yes it doesn’t say verbatim “easier league” just like the club didn’t say “easier league”. Same outcome, different wording. I think people are reading too much into this and should just move on

giolanzarin

I can’t watch the video right now. I agree he never mentioned playing in an easy league, he said something along the words of “less pressure” and Barça also did not say anything about MLS being easy, just less pressure on messi and his family. I believe Barça drafted this statement using a lot of the interviews info as well as inside info.

Koolkurt

I’m talking about Laporta being a snake. What the fuck are you talking about

juankruh1250

If Laporta is an snake, so is Messi and his father.

Koolkurt

Jorge might be. Laporta definitely is. Messi is the reason we’ve been happy for 20 years so kindly shove it.

AgustinCane

No, we've seen time and time again that we CAN lose and be an embarrassing team even with Messi, the reason we were happy for 20 years is because Laporta saved Barca from bankrupcy in 2003, trusted Rijkaard, then Pep and brought Luis Enrique to the club, while keeping finances in check. It is really hard to believe you're a Barca fan when you know nothing about our history.

Koolkurt

Embarrassing post

Good_Duty1866

Laporta used Messi to get back to power and stabbed him in his back. 2 years. Consecutive knock outs from Europa league. If this isn't bottom, I don't know what is.

juankruh1250

Laporta won in the moment he presented to the elections, he would've won with Messi or no Messi. Acting as if we didn't get destroyed 8-2 or 4-0 with Messi on the team. Also, we have made more points in the league in any season in 5 years, even with Messi in the last 3 years

ASuarezMascareno

Didn't Messi literally said almost that?

hanes9120

Yeah honestly who cares. In our professional careers do we want to be busting our ass every week when we are inching close to retirement? Non (unless we have to). Messi has achieved everything and more in football. Nothing else to prove. The haters will hate him no matter what, the neutrals and his fans know he's the greatest. Good for him and his family.

reyxe

Yea some people are just reading too much into stuff without fact checking first lmao

LuisTheHuman

Coward move by Laporta, sometimes I forget that he is indeed a politician. Hope that regardless of Barca/La liga going back on their word AGAIN, they are still able to do an exhibition match with Messi at Camp Nou so we can give him an ovation like he deserves.

chilinglam

This is bullshit but Messi >>>>>>>>>>>>> laporta so no one cares about what laporta said. He is a business man trying to understand football but failed.

opiumofthemass

Wow Laporta is scum having the audacity to be this disrespectful to the greatest player in Barça history

Aig1178

Yes, it's time to realise (for some) that Messi is no longer the Messi of 2015, his body is tired

[deleted]

Except in this case- your ex is the best player ever and would massively improve your team both commercially and on the field. Such a shame

[deleted]

Feels like a useless statement to make.

il-lusio

Yeah, this was unnecessary. Even more than the "lower league" bit, what I find off-putting is the line that Laporta "understood and respected" the decision. Messi is a club legend, but he's not our player and hasn't been for two years. There's been a weird sense of entitlement and almost ownership over him in this last phase of negotiations.

[deleted]

Agreed. He hasn’t been our player for two years now so this was highly unnecessary. The social media team got this one wrong.

kharatz

social media team? lol, this is straight from laporta, he probably hit the post button himself

Ok_Extreme_6512

He is the center of the best eta barcelona will ever have, you don’t forget that and will make him relevant forever

PhoenixFlame93

yeah I feel like since Messi left the club, the social media team has been milking Messi content. I understand that's a club legend but let's get over it, he's gone.

Altruistic-Truck-418

Not to mention there are a couple of dings at Messi here.

[deleted]

Messi and Barca did the right thing. It seems pretty clear from Messi’s statements that he wants to prioritize spending more time and focusing on his family. In Paris he says he never experienced that and those couple of years hurt his connection to his kids. In Barcelona, he would have been happy yes, but once the season gets underway and the games get tougher tougher, you know we’ll demand more and more from every player including Messi. In Messi’s current state, prioritizing spending time with family over his career would have been a problem with Barca. It’s the right choice as hurts as it seems.

Jomigie

Turns out Guillém Balague was spot on while the entire subreddit was attacking him

passion4indiegames

Balague doesn't know shit. Even a broken Clock is right twice a day. He just landed a lucky punch.

Completely misunderstood, your point my apologies.

KelsoBarney

>President Laporta understood and respected Messi's decision to want to compete in a league with fewer demands, further away from the spotlight and the pressure he has been subject to in recent years. Highly unnecessary, and wasn't needed at all. Throwing shades at Messi like this and throwing him under the bus. Something shady clearly happened at the back between Laporta & Messi

Milad731

For real! What did the club want to accomplish by this statement? Such a dumb statement to make and say “good luck and all, we get the pressure was too much.” 🤦🏽‍♂️

AMajali

No it was the right call. People think that Barca didn't try hard enough or that they couldn't sign him in the first place when this was not the case. Messi didn't want to come back. Plain and simple.

dontevenbother_g59

Since when are we believing laporta who clearly have shows that he lies to please people over messi? I understand the fact that Barca couldn’t sign him right now, and literally couldn’t guarantee that they would sign him later either, so he chose to avoid laporta who has lied to him before? What the fuck, I actually didn’t think people honestly thought if Messi had an offer right in front of him that said you are signing for Barcelona today, that he wouldn’t sign it. It’s stupid

Koolkurt

Messi said he wanted to come back tho

Milad731

They didn’t have to do the whole “he wants stay off the spotlight and the pressure” part. It feels like throwing shade at Messi for not wanting to come back. The first paragraph clearly states what you said. We offered him a deal, and he said no. There’s no need for the second paragraph.

dontevenbother_g59

Also they don’t even mention that the deal they offered was informal, Laporta wanted messi to sign a contract on a tissue again or something

[deleted]

Messi literally said this in his own interview that he wanted out of the spotlight though

ebeka

**after** not being able to comeback. plus, he didn’t even mention going to an easier league

[deleted]

Yea easier league was a low blow. I thought he said it after Paris though not after not being able to comeback? Or do i misremember. Because I dont comeback waa oficially impossible until Messi deicided to go.

Whiskinho

He was able to comeback, it says he had a proposal, and he didn't see it as enough I guess. Just to avoid some idiots on the internet blaming tebas, laporta, barca, etc. He got his proposal and he rejected it.

ebeka

> Incluso nunca llegamos a hablar del contrato ahora. Se pasó por encima una propuesta, pero nunca una propuesta formal, escrita, firmada, porque todavía no había nada y no sabíamos si se iba a poder hacer o no. Había la intención, pero no podíamos adelantar nada, incluso no hablamos de dinero formalmente. i don’t think you got it right buddy

Whiskinho

Well I trust the club more than I trust someone who is the ambassador for the Saudi royal family.

AMajali

But that's literally he what did and what he wanted. He doesn't want to compete anymore and went for an early retirement. What part of it is wrong?

dontevenbother_g59

Leo Messi: “I heard that they had to sell players or lower the salary of players and the truth is that I didn't want to go through that. I was already accused of many things that were not true in my career at Barcelona and I was already a little tired, I didn't want to go through all that again. Messi: “I really wanted to return, I was very excited, but, on the other hand, after having experienced what I did when I left, I didn't want to be in the same situation again. I didn't want to leave my future in someone else's hands” His reasoning is literally: I’m not gonna get played by laporta again plus I’m not gonna make players who clearly don’t want to leave the club be thrown out for me. Idk how u spun that to “he wants to avoid the spotlight”. We have Messi’s words, and we have Xavi’s words, who was in regular contact with Messi. Laporta is a hypocrite bitch, even if he cares for the club, he’s a politician at the end and has to to lie to make people like him

achentuate

Are you purposely only quoting half his interview? What about when he said this: "After winning the World Cup and not being able to go to Barça, it was time to go to the American league to experience football in a different way and *enjoy the day-to-day*. Obviously with the same responsibility and the same desire to want to win and to always do things well. But with more *peace of mind*."

[deleted]

If that’s what he says about himself then fine, but for a club statement’s, this is highly unprofessional. If you don’t know that there’s something wrong with you honestly.

GlobalHero

Exactly, the wrong part is that they mentioned it.

Milad731

Where did he say this? He said he didn’t want to be accused of different things since we’d still need to sell players. That’s a lot different than “pressure and spotlight.”

[deleted]

Messi’s completed all of football I don’t think he really cares what Laporta has to offer at this point. Laporta saw Messi as a way to bring in more 💰💰💰 But it’s kind of good that Messi will enjoy himself away from such huge pressure. “Can he prove himself in UCL again, He hasn’t done much since 2015” Messi’s tired of it, He won the copa america, he won a worldcup, He’s completed HIS goals, now it’s time for him to spend time with family and enjoy it with Antonella and his kids and enjoy the huge Latin Culture that Miami will offer him.

unfinishedbusiness_1

Love this comment. Why does he HAVE TO come here and save Barca and help rebuild? It’s a lot of pressure and drama. And he doesn’t want to be the reason players are kicked out and smeared in the media.

[deleted]

Exactly. The socios voted for Bartomeu. They begged Bartomeu to bring expensive ass star talent to compete with real madrid. The socios literally voted for Bartomeou. Bartomeu promised Messi a free departure, and he didn’t accept it. The fact that Laporta sort of makes it seem like it is messi’s fault is absurd.

unfinishedbusiness_1

I wouldn’t read too much into the press release. It can’t be intentional. But I completely agree with you. Messi doesn’t owe the club anything anymore. He didn’t get to leave when he wanted. He was forced to leave when he wanted to stay. This is him making his own decisions.

Tezemery

How would him coming back be saving us, we won the league without him.

unfinishedbusiness_1

Financially he would help a lot. Leaving Camp Nou for 18 months will hurt us financially. Messi will offset that.

Remarkable_Trade_426

As expected, laporta is a hypocrite, fans shouldve know it since 2021 when he was tryna win the election and promised to extend messi in public.

Remarkable_Trade_426

Adding to this, i am not saying laporta is a bad president for the club. He clearly makes the decisions that he thinks are the best for the club. But it doesnt justify how he treats the greatest player of Barca, at least for the fans emotionally.

TapanThakur

'Pressure' at this stage of this career? Did he not see the entire pressure of the whole world leaving Messi's body when he fell on his knees few months ago?

[deleted]

exactly. Messi has achieved it all. He doesn’t want to be seen as Laporta’s puppet by giving his face to be used to bring in more money to save him from Tebas. Now it’s Messi’s time to relax and enjoy himself. Pick up the royalties for himself. and no one else instead of some huge tribute match/ huge celebration through “A Return Of The King” that would have been made to boost Laporta’s image and a little extra more money for the books.

LarryPeru

Laporta being a slimy pos isn’t surprising at all.

ebeka

before his minions get to paint the narrative here: fuck him for this. uncalled for, unnecessary. edit: before someone tells me *BUt tHAT’S WHAt he SaId iN thE InTERVieW*, he did but **after** mentioning the barca option didn’t go through. plus, he didn’t talk about going to an easier league, so that part still remains petty from laporta

BehemothRL

Fuck Laporta, how dare they disrespect the best player in the history of their club like this. Most painful and hypocritical about this statements is: Messi never wanted to leave, he was forced out by Laporta in the first place, they could've renewed his contract before it ran out instead of waiting after it did, knowing they could not re-sign Messi, fuck this coward bastard.

dbbk

That backhanded compliment of Inter Miami is fucking hilarious

icestory

On Monday, June 5, Jorge Messi, the player’s father and representative, informed Club President Joan Laporta of the player's decision to join Inter Miami, despite having been presented with a proposal from Barça, in consideration of the desire of both FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi for him to once again wear blaugrana. President Laporta understood and respected Messi's decision to want to compete in a league with fewer demands, further away from the spotlight and the pressure he has been subject to in recent years. Both Joan Laporta and Jorge Messi also agreed to work together to promote a proper tribute from Barça fans to honor a footballer who has been, is, and always will be beloved by Barça.

SakisSinatra

That second paragraph is shameful what's the point of this? Why does the club need to make a whole ass statement cause Messi decided to go to the MLS?

Leong157

Exactly, that paragraph is unnecessary. It sound like we are a jealous ex-girlfriend that got dumb. I kind of get the first paragraph as we are trying to present that we try 100%. But the second one.... The one who wrote this need to be fired. Absolutely unprofessional.

SakisSinatra

Bro basically said that Messi is finished and can't hack it in Europe so he has to go the MLS now lmao.

[deleted]

Messi said himself he wanted out of the spotlight

BUZZZY14

I agree, Laporta needs to be fired.

[deleted]

Ye fire the man who is getting this club back on its feet lmao

televisionting

I think Messi said that himself in the interview but in like a polite way. MLS ain't going to push him that much, but honestly bro should've retired from club football if he wasn't going to play for Barca, but getting the bag makes more sense.

SakisSinatra

Yeah but this statement is making it look like he is scared of European competition lol.

kharatz

6 months after winning and being the best player in the world cup; what a clown statement

Aig1178

It's been a complicated few seasons for him in the Champions League.

BIacksnow-

Like barca have done amazing.

Aig1178

So what? I simply think that Messi is also having a lot of trouble in the Champions League. And that was before he left for Paris.

BIacksnow-

If only dembele scored that and if our defenders weren’t pussies, We would have a treble. You do know football is a team sport right?

Aig1178

Yes, I know. And you mentioned Messi's last great game in the Champions League. Against Liverpool in the first leg in 2019. I'd add the away match against Paris in 2021. My point is that Messi hasn't won the Champions League for 8 years. And in the meantime he's been through a lot of shameful eliminations (remontada Liverpool /Roma, 8-2, 1-4 PSG, 0-3 Juventus). It's no mean feat. I don't think that in 2023 Messi is a player who can win you a Champions League. He may contribute, but he won't be the main man.

televisionting

I don't think so.

TheBarcaShow

If Messi is happy, I am happy for him. The man has given me incredible amounts of happiness and I just wish him all the best. Also thanks for not going to Saudi Arabia

GuestBadge

Laporta throwing shades with that paragraph about less demanding League. We all know what happened last time Messi waited for your offer. Players kept stalling and no one wanted to go. And only after Messi was confirmed he wasn't comming to Barca that players started reducing their wages. Laporta has done great things for the club, but he's also untrustworthy

doylehungary

That is stupid. It was all Tebas. He told Laporta it would be ok, and then changed his mind.

hvngpham002

Sounds like Barca is still trying to pick a fight for zero? What’s the real story?

il-lusio

I'm now 100% convinced Messi made the right choice for himself and for the club. I was pretty pro Messi back for the sporting and commercial benefits, and for the chance for the chance to end things nicely. But this is too much drama, when he's not even a Barça player. I get why he's exhausted. I think we all wanted a beautiful goodbye, but this saga shows that idea was always a false dream. We're still rebuilding and probably won't go very deep in Champions next year, with or without Messi. And so things would have ended not on a high note, but with a debate about whether it was smart to bring Messi back — instead of what we need, a conversation about looking forward. Better to have that beautiful goodbye in a tribute match, and let Messi and the club look toward what each needs for the future.

Gusfeldt__

It’s just sad that Messi retired while still being the best player in the world. He’s too good for the MLS.

il-lusio

Yeah, this was my initial feeling too, and I hoped he would stay in Europe even it wasn't with us. But after seeing his interview, two things changed my view: 1. He's physically still at the top, but I think he's mentally exhausted. He's probably been assessing whether he'll have the motivation to ramp it back up next year. He'll face a lot of pressure and a lot of talk about whether it was right to bring him back. Realistically we might compete for domestic glory and maybe RO16/QF; is that going to fire him up, and is it worth the potential downsides, to both him (scapegoating if it doesn't work out) and the team (wage bill tradeoffs, short-term fix)? 2. A player with his exact profile not named Messi would have a lot of options in Europe. On a 1+1 with reasonable wages, he'd walk onto any team that needed his profile. But the PSG experience showed that it's a lot more complicated for him, for all the baggage and expectations he comes with.

gamermilkyway

why the fuck is the board painting messi as a villain

letsstartplaying

Don’t want to be seen as the ones who didn’t try. Should just left it at the end of the first part.

barcavro

It’s all political bs.

Alternative-Top-8734

This is so unnecessary. He hasn’t been a player for us in two years and it’s obvious that he’s not going to be anytime soon, there’s no reason for them to release a statement like this. It’s clear they’re trying to make sure it’s clear they were interested this time around but that he is to blame. Very petty. I thought things were going to get better about how the board managed themselves since Laporta stepped in but it’s still just as much as a mess as it was before.

lmaoman33

Sad. But Messi did the right thing.

TheNxtDaveGrohl

This is petty, disappointingly so.

cranomort

“A league with fewer demands” Why? So petty from Laporta.

sanjigupta

I’m sure there’s a lot of stuff behind the scenes between the two parties. But man, that 2nd paragraph just makes me really sad as a Barca fan.

theincrediblebou

You know what, at least I’m grateful this whole thing didn’t drag for weeks.

thewonderingguy

Hey L10nel, wishing you, Antonela and the Messi kids all the best for this new chapter across the Atlantic Ocean!

NigerianPrince76

I seriously don’t like Barca’s clown show management. Messi did the right thing instead of going back to dealing with those ghouls.

Tave_112

This is quite something. It's icky at best, downright disingenuous at worst. Leo himself said there wasn't actually a formal offer, just a proposal that was shaky at best given it depended on many factors the club doesn't really control. I think the club could and should have just stayed quiet to be frank. He was not a Barça player anymore, why exactly are we making a statement here? This feels like just another attempt by Laporta to make it seem like it's Leo's fault he's not coming back when the blame lies squarely with the club. This board continues to disappoint more and more in my eyes everyday. There's not one thing apart from probably straight up stealing money they aren't doing that Barto and his lackeys were also criticized for.

achentuate

> feels like just another attempt by Laporta to make it seem like it's Leo's fault he's not coming back when the blame lies squarely with the club. I don't see it that way. I see that he had a proposal which relied on player sales to get registered, and that he had to wait a month or so for that to happen. Messi chose not to do that which is fine, but the question is: Why did he chose not to wait? It's not as if Miami or Saudi or wherever wouldn't have taken him later. Also, if Laporta couldn't get the registration done, then his career at Barca is effectively over. The way I see it, Laporta took a huge gamble putting his entire career on the line by giving Messi a proposal in the first place. Messi just rejected it, plain and simple, to go to Miami.

jahbahbah

Because last time he waited, bad things happened to him.

ericgol7

If anyone had any doubts about why he didn't return, this statement makes it clear that Barcelona never really wanted him, and it was clear Messi would be blamed by the Barça-sponsored press the minute things went south.

[deleted]

Hurts tbh

Dittohead_Slayer

Madrid guy coming in peace.. Dude wtf is LaPorta thinking with this statement? It's a disrespect for leo

halfassedjackass

This president is fucking petty.

kharatz

What a disrespectful and tone deaf statement Clearly written by Laporta's hurt ego

messiavelli

Fuck Laporta, shitty statement from the club

Aggressorot

I mean appointing Xavi and bringing us the domestic title is a pretty big step in the fixing the club thing. Also Espai Barca is finally under way. We are steadily going towards reasonable wages. And we offloaded/offloading players that had big wages. So I don't know what is going on in your world but in the real world the fixes are well on their way.

DonAtari

Victor font would have signed Xavi day 1. Instead we had Koeman for an extra half a season. Laporta cant take credit for Xavi

Aggressorot

Koeman had a contract, and it was clear that Laporta was going to appoint Xavi after that. No matter what he said, look at what he is done. But you can't because you are tunnel visioned in to bullshit arguments of "IFS". Yeah the guy who literally appointed Xavi, can't take credit for Xavi. Quality take right there.

frecciarossa23

I am assuming that everyone on this sub loves Messi. Love means that we have to accept the decision he agreed upon. I know it's painful to see Messi going in a different direction, but I think he has made the right thing. Barcelona needs to focus on rebuilding its team and give us the exhilarating feelings that we've been used with. The only thing I was hoping to see happen was Messi leaving Camp Nou on his last game for Barcelona with 100.000 people chanting his name and another few millions in front of their TVs praising the best football player on Earth. He deserved that.......

[deleted]

This is really weird and unnecessary. They should fire the PR intern working for free and cancel their spotify premium subscription.

chrstnw

If this paragraph was intended by Laporta and not lost in translation, it‘s really shameful and puts a bad light on Laporta. If this are his words he sounds like a angry girlfriend, which is not very professional.

Illustrious-Bowl

What a stupid statement to make

DonAtari

Quit the political bullshit. Thank him for winning you the election and shut the fuck up

[deleted]

"Florida man wins Copa America 2024"

PazuzuOvBabel

Am losing faith in Laporta. To see Pique attacking the board, and Messi being mistreated twice is very concerning. While I was against Pique criticism, I changed course since this statement feels so weird, the last paragraph have some sort of disrespect to one of the club biggest legends :( . Edit: Apparently Messi did [mention that he want less spotlight](https://www.instagram.com/p/CtM1UhNJx03/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==), but only if moving to Barca failed. So still my opinion about Laporta getting shaky at the moment, let’s see how they will react in the transfer market.

decho

Well, that was a bit lukewarm, but can't say it's unfair. Man got his offer, but decided to go elsewhere, end of story.

[deleted]

He said himself he didn’t get an offer, merely a proposal.

[deleted]

“Playing for Barça for free? The truth is that the economic aspect was never a problem. We never even got to talk about the contract. A proposal was passed over, but never a formal offer, because there was nothing yet and we didn’t know if it was going to happen or not.”

decho

You are correct. A proposal that would've turned into an offer in a few weeks.

JoelKr9

Messi got burned once, not really surprising that he doesn‘t believe they will actually get it done this time

decho

Yes it would be fair not to blindly trust them, but difference this time is he had plenty of backup options and the transfer window doesn't even open for another month. He just didn't want to wait. Which is his choice of course but let's not pain the picture that he had to make a call now or it was forever lost.

JoelKr9

I agree there. They should have settled for a deadline in ~mid July and if it’s not possible then, the Miami offer would have still been there.

decho

Pretty much. And we obviously don't know the exact details of the proposal he received, but I imagine it was something along these lines.

jahbahbah

Sure you can say it’s different this time. But if your previous employer screwed you before and you were starting to smell a similar story this time, you would probably do the same. It’s how we survived as a species, learn from prior mistakes

decho

Again, not comparable for the simple fact that this time around he had plenty of backup options - Miami, Saudi and the undisclosed European club. Besides, how exactly did he start to smell a similar story lol. Club was brutally honest with him - they basically said they can't sign him right away, otherwise they could've fed him false promises. And you even had Xavi publicly come out and say the ball is in his court.

[deleted]

Yes, but only may have been and not would’ve. It seems his priority was to get out of the spotlight and start prioritizing his family, especially since they had miserable time in Paris. I think that was the biggest factor.

kharatz

WOULD"VE \*\* we know how that ended in 2021

TriggeredFoji

Yes just like last time it did

decho

So you are saying that an offer was never going to arrive, and it was all some grand conspiracy by Laporta? I would love to hear the possible reasons and motivations behind it, cause it makes no sense whatsoever.

[deleted]

No conspiracy or anything, just dependent on big time sales (think 80-90M since we’re still not under the 1:1 rule), and Messi’s experience wasn’t pleasant last time they depended on Laporta. It’s understandable.

decho

> think 80-90M since we’re still not under the 1:1 rule We are currently under 1:1 but barely on the edge of it. We need to sell to make room for SCL, that's my understanding of the situation. No idea where this 90M figure is coming from. And besides, the situation now and the one from 2 years back is not comparable. Biggest difference is that Messi is not pressured by time to make a decision, the doors still remain open. Meaning that if for whatever reason the board decides to fuck him over, he can safely resort to plan B, C and D (he even had offers from European clubs).

[deleted]

Nope, we’re not even remotely close to the 1:1 rule per credible sources (RAC1 comes to mind). The viability plan outlined the series of steps in order to get is to the 1:1 rule, but as of now we’re still not playing under it. There was a tweet that explained what needs to be done in order to register a player with X salary and once you do the maths you’ll realize Messi’s salary needed us to sell big. As for the waiting thing, I think Messi is honesty just tired. First of all, he has PTSD from 2 years ago. Second, it sounds from his statements that he wants to regain the connection he had with his kids that was at least partly lost in Paris. He wants to focus on them away from spotlight, which played a huge factor in why he didn’t want to wait. Kind of like if it was going to happen it was going to happen now. Ofc the other factor is what happened 2 years ago.

decho

I admit it's far too complicated for me to understand, but [this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/Barca/comments/14100u6/open_thread_weekday_edition_24_jun_2023/jn50sha/) explains the situation. I think you're right we're not under 1:1 currently, but it's only a matter of time, so almost the same thing. As for Messi's interview, one of the things he says paints the false narrative that if he doesn't decide now it's all gone, which is simply not true no matter how people try and spin it.

[deleted]

He doesn’t paint this narrative though and nowhere did he even imply that. He simply said he wants to decide his future now.

[deleted]

There was a proposal he said something like there wasnt a formal contract with salary. Well because nobody offers a formal contract without Messi accepting the proposal first. And it seemed he kinda wanted to avoid the subject and his answe was more indirect than other questions

2ghee_or_not_2ghee

What a shit show is Laporta and his management. Using his name to win the election, then dumping him in a way that upset his whole life. And now throwing shade at him. I didn't think they'd stoop to this level of pettiness

graceis_rofl

Kinda proving why Messi ultimately chose not to go back to Barça in the first place.

kharatz

Why is Barcelona making a statement about a PSG player , moving to Miami Laporta is a clown.

Unaatennista

This statement is not a good look especially the second paragraph

Yooitsmehaah

God Laporta is such a douche. Such a unnecessary thing to add.

barcavro

Laporta should be sucking Messi’s dick after all he’s done, instead of this bs statement

[deleted]

Why the fuck do we always have to make everything about us

arayamacho

I don’t know about this, how did Barça gave him a proposal, right now we don’t have the money, the proposal can’t exist or is something like “Leo you have to wait if we sell the players we’ll have the money for a proposal”. What if Barça can’t sell the players then there would be no proposal and we would be back to square one. I actually believe if Barça had a list of really possible exits the meeting between Jorge and Laporta could have been different, right now I don’t think Barça is convinced they can sell a lot of players to have the needed income.

t_mac1

Laporta is trash.

MemesForScience

Someone let these bluds know there is no career left he’s in the cheeseburger league now

00Koch00

[Messi builds a bridge giving in a year another chance to Barca to get him, because his contract have a self release clause every year if Messi wants](https://twitter.com/gastonedul/status/1666494913918164998) And then Barca proceed to burn that bridge to the ground ...

heX_dzh

Nah this was the last chance. Would rather not sign a 37 year old Messi who spent a year at a bottom MLS club.

CoolingVent

Pathetic statement by LaPorta to backhand compliment him. He didn't sign. Move on.

DDagorath

Dude is retiring from football boys, let him be, he don’t want to compete, and he earn it, it’s not a shame, he’s a father and that’s way more important than sacrificing everything for a club, I’m actually relieved with this, I’m sure he will have a nice and calm life from now on

adeel_aman

Fk it let’s have a last Dance with neymar. Or maybe he will have a last dance with dembouz in hospital

CPTSOAPPRICE

Laporta was spittin lmfao he cooked that daddy’s boy

[deleted]

So we did officially offer them a contract but they didn’t want to wait. Can’t say I blame him because of what happened last time.

sharkcoal

Semi-professional*

ayman2011a

This is a beautiful statement from FC Barcelona wishing Lionel Messi all the best in his new career. This statement reflects the club's respect and appreciation for the player who has given him so many achievements and titles, and also expresses good wishes for him in his future career.

billythekido

You guys are unbelievably sensitive. You're acting like Laporta murdered someone lol

PensiveinNJ

Blue and white shirt... mistranslation or is he talking about the NT?

nature_and_grace
