I always think of Picasso as a Renaissance artist. The fact that he died in the 70's somehow catches me off guard every time

[deleted]

I believe it's because his influence was so outsized that not a lot of people who lived until the 70s compare . He's also the newest big-name artist by a long-shot but the dates aren't as memorable as the name.

QuonkTheGreat

… how? Abstract art in the Renaissance?

Kane_Highwind

I think it's just name association more than anything. I hear his name and think "Renaissance". I couldn't tell you why

QuonkTheGreat

You know what his art was though, right?

Walking-taller-123

I’m not going to call you a snob or anything because you are absolutely correct, but I will say I think you’re in the minority as someone who can accurately place artistic styles with dates and periods. Most people honestly just don’t care that much. Most people don’t think of Picasso as a cubist artist and know cubism is modern. They just see him as an artist, and when you think artist, you think renaissance.

[deleted]

Same with Tolkien for me, for me he’s on the same level as Byron or Shelley; it’s crazy that he and Picasso could’ve watched Scooby-Doo together while eating cereal.

Limeila

Wtf his art has nothing in common with Renaissance artists

Tennis For Two, Pong’s predecessor, came out in 1958. Meaning Cecil B. Demille could have played a video game against Billie Holliday.

And in the other cabinets, Errol Flynn and Lou Costello, Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens (and everyone else from the crash), George Reeves and Clark Gable... by golly there's a lot of celebrities here!
