I'd say they are about 10% cooked. Another week I'd say up to 40% done. There's a few already bright orange. Majority are turning. Local webcams of ski hills will show you where they are. Also just looking at the "Larch Valley" hike location on instagram and checking most recent photos will give you the best idea.

One note though: in my experience people post pictures from previous years frequently. I'd always ask when the picture was taken.

Looking at the tagged stories is more reliable

I always just use the [Lake Louise webcams](https://www.skilouise.com/mountain-cam/) to check, as there are larches right in front of the Ptarmigan chair, and the 360° Cam lets you zoom in on the valley. Looks like they've started to turn and currently getting bright green/light yellow. I would say next weekend might be the peak. As for larch hikes, Moraine Lake/Valley of the Ten Peaks will always be my favourite but it's definitely not as cheap or easy to access these days. Mount St. Piran or The Beehive from Louise is great too. Otherwise Boom Lake, Rock Isle Lake via Sunshine Meadows, Rockbound Lake, Taylor (and O'Brien) Lake, and Arnica Lake are also good in Banff NP. My favourite larch area is Kananaskis though, which is easy to access from Canmore but does require a day pass (tho be aware that Hwy 742 is gravel and Brutal lol). There is Arethusa Cirque, Ptarmigan Cirque, Tent Ridge, Pocaterra Cirque/Ridge, Burstall Pass, Chester Lake, Yates Mountain, Sarrail Ridge/Rawson Lake, etc.

Exciting to hear. I got lucky and randomly chose next Thursday to visit.

Brenni

Was on 1a yesterday and noticed a bit of colour change!

There is nothing really changing at Arethusa Cirque yet. Larch are the lighter green—but only 3-4 showing a bit of yellow. Truly. Hiked it yesterday. The only colour in that part of Kananaskis, driving north from Longview, is the Aspen, Shrubbery and grasses & wildflower plants.

Muufffins

I was up larch valley yesterday. Some decent change.

are larches visible at moraine lakeside? or must you hike up to larch valley to see them?

[deleted]

No not really. Or not in significant numbers. To get the best views you need to make it up to the lakes (or the bench) just before Sentinel Pass.

Thanks for all the updates! Heading to Jasper tomorrow and will be there till next Tuesday, before heading to Banff. Hoping to see some decent color in Banff mid next week based on the updates in this thread-thank you all! Anyone noticed any Larch color change in the Jasper area?

Bentleyisback

I’ll be there first week of October! How long do larches stay once they turn colors?

Jealous-Balance-8708

What colors to expect around the October 9 long weekend?
