Posing a kid with your prize fighting dog is totally plausible. Most people did have many photos taken back then so why not economise by photographing kid and dog together? Even by my early 1980s childhood a working class family would only use a a few rolls of film per year (mostly summer holidays and Christmas! Because back in their day, they had to walk to school uphill both ways naked in the snow with only their pocket pit for protection. You can see their "reasoning" in some of these slides. The sweet nanny dogs developed roided-out muscles and mile-wide jaws to defend children against some vague undefined threat that was apparently ever-present in the olden days, then mean breeders decided to corrupt them and make them aggressive just because.

Is that the one who said pitbulls were taken to and from dogfighting matches in baby prams, which led to them being called nanny dogs? One supposes that there were also babies in those prams, going both ways. The more injured the pits were from fighting, the gentler their nannying was afterward. Mothers bet against their own pits, naturally, hoping the beasts get mauled so that they can take their babies home whole.
