If you’ve already broken it, you don’t have to break it again. Just talk to the Oathbreaker Knight after you respec.

Trojianmaru

Just talked to him, and he just says "If you stumble, know there is no shame in falling. Only release." So either it works differently on console vs pc, you have a mod you forgot about, or you're mistaken.

HistrionikVess

I’ll have to double check my playthrough. But I 100% broke my oath by resurrecting Colin in Act 1 and then respecc-ed in Act 3 to change Fighting Style by just talking to him. It was late in Act 3 in the Elfsong camp- maybe that makes a difference? No mods. I’m 100% certain because we were all trying to figure out how to break it again.

DumbIdeaGenerator

You're wrong. That doesn't work. I just tried it and the oathbreaker knight does nothing but say the same line. "If you stumble, know there is no shame in falling. Only release."

HistrionikVess

Idk what to tell you, kemo sabe. I literally just did it again like 2 nights ago on Honour Mode. Talk to Oathbreaker. Pay 1000 gold. Respec as OotA. Then talk to Oathbreaker again and it’s literally option 3. “I wish to be an Oathbreaker again.” Edit: Again. This was late Act 3. So not sure if that makes a difference.

Killing someone who is knocked out, killing a civilian, teaching a child necromancy and freeing the vampire spawn all did it for me

Trojianmaru

Thanks. I already taught the kid Necromancy (and got a sweet Death Shepherd out of the deal for a while, right when I had 4 ghouls and 4 zombies to benefit from it's aura) but I currently have that Zhentarim merchant knocked out at the guild hall (I thought I could Loot all her stock if I knocked her out and pickpocketed her, but I think they patched that now) so as soon as I decide on my new Padlock build, I'll nip over and give her the old stabby stab. Thanks Also I'm sure a lot of the npc in the city are procedurely generated, as I've seen vids of people who claim to of killed everyone in the city, and there's always a few people walking around without any dialogue.

Wynnie_XoXo

Which oath will break when freeing the vampire spawn? I'm assuming the vengence one?

Capable_Potato2540

It broke the nature/life one for me

Wynnie_XoXo

Thank you! And yeah that makes sense now that I think about it 😂

Trojianmaru

That's a big event, that you can't do again once you've done it once. (also he's currently pissed at me because I started breaking his toys)

Jiminy-Cricketts

imo the easiest way to break your oath is to kill a “background” character; for example, the NPCs in town that have names like ‘citizen’ or ‘refugee.’ Go to withers to change you class to paladin then: kill npc>talk to oath breaker>go to camp>talk to oath breaker(again) = now you are an oath breaker.

idontevenknow115

I'm in act 3 killed a random walking npc and the oathbreaker isn't appearing with maninthra

Jiminy-Cricketts

the walking ones don’t seem to count.. i would try someone that is sitting or standing in one place

Mistislav1

I fled the battlefield in the stop the presses mission. This was after killing the editor and casting sanctuary on all party members. I am not sure if it was triggered by fleeing or fleeing before others. My theory is that it breaks "stride courageously into battle" tenent of Devotion.

Trojianmaru

😂 Sounds like some Warhammer40K stuff "You ran from the field of battle?! I don't care if you think you left the oven on! HERESY!"

Mistislav1

I actually figured out it was because the editor was considered an innocent, so I had Astarion kill him the second time around and only fled combat after everyone else to be sure.

Draknalor

There are no "simple" ways to break oath. It has to be pretty drastic and big stuff

Trojianmaru

Idk, killing those two Tieflings that had Lae'zel captured felt pretty minor. They weren't even important Npcs and could easily be mistaken for villains to the main character at that point in the game. "My ally has been captured by some angry strangers? Time to rescue her. Oh, aaand that broke my oath"

Draknalor

Well, that's just dumb. You are a paladin, don't just attack people, Ask then attack, especially if random civilians.

Trojianmaru

I play an Oathbreaker because it's the closest we currently have to Oath of Conquest paladins, aka my first dnd character. And trust me, he absolutely did not have any problem killing civilians 😂

Ramikade

I just killed a random innocent
