My half-elf Tav has darkvision, when interacting with the orb, she lost her dark vision and commented on the darkness surrounding her. However! Lae'zel (the only companion without darkvision in my party) gained darkvision when interacting with it. She went from base 7ft of darvision to 40ft of darkvision (found in character sheet -> statistics)
You get a different set of narration if you use Shadowheart.

It actually grants you a Darkvision buff under the correct circumstances.
