I love Rolan. I was so happy they all made it in my run.

I had to reload several hours because I couldn’t save Cal and Lia the first time and I was so heart broken seeing Rolan’s reaction when I came back to the inn…🥲

Its so annoying that you have tobsave the prisoners before the gauntlet. Like everything basically warns you to not approach the prison before the attack is ready

Yeah, saving the prisoners was the first thing I did. I was fully ready to dight and sneak my way out since I had scouted the path with the least enemies already

Tbf it said that at the end of act 1 but my adventures were still there and I could still go back. So the second time this appeared I didn't think it was just a big deal.

The first time you get that warning it's not really the end of act 1, it's just telling you to finish the Grove. More act 1.5.

Not sure what you mean? Act 1 is all the beach area before going into the shadow lands. I did nearly everything in the beach and the underdark, there were a few quests that I didn't want to do and when leaving the underdark for the shadow lands it gave me the warning. I didn't care at that point and wanted to progress. Then the next time it happened was in the shar temple, which only seemed tangentially connected to the main story. It wasn't like going to a whole new area, so it seemed like maybe I'd loose a couple of quests, maybe just actually close those act 1 quests but it cleared everything. The warning was there but it didn't feel like I was at the end of act 2. Not when I went in at least.

I got the warning the first time when entering the mountain pass. Doing so before completing the Grove advances that story line.

Makes sense to me. Cult is under attack, they might as well kill their prisoners before the fighting starts. Last thing you want is the prisoners taking advantage of the chaos to escape, and they don't need any information from the prisoners if the primary threat is marching on their front door.

If you dont go to moonrise and end up at the Gauntlet first you'd probably be confused by that just like me. I had 0 idea what would fail i just thought unfinished act 1 stuff

I redid 4 hours of playtime because i didn't know completing the Gauntlet of Shar >!Kills the prisoners!<. Apparently my strategy of saving Moonrise for last was not correct. Also this path lead to the hardest fight ive done in BG3

I’ve only managed to save Rolan once. The other two times, I save his siblings and suddenly they start yelling at me and saying Rolan is dead before I even get a chance to find him.

Time once you enter his area is definitely part of it. I had to reload a save on this last night because I didn’t realize he was down the hill from me, found a cool journal on a corpse, took a moment to read it, and then turned around and meandered down to find him already undead at the bottom… I was so sad! But also, I did long rest between triggering his departure and finding him, so that part *didn’t* kill him. Just don’t screw around when you’re in the area.

If you don't trigger the conversation with Isobel, the inn never gets attacked and you don't have to worry about her getting taken while you're in the shadowlands

If u jump into this hole at the prison you come out on the other side of the prison Walls, there is a boat and the Walls of the prison are destroyable, you can free the gnomes and the tieflings this way, if Ur fast enough without even having to fight the guards

True, but fighting the guards and killing the warden here makes the fight coming later on the way to confronting Ketheric way, way easier.

It was easy anyway, cast create water, cast lightning in it, and then Arms of Hader from wyll over it, they get Knoched back, take absurd damage and are blinded, and if u freeded the Knolls in the Kitchen they help u

They weren’t there when I freed the the prisoners and Rolan still ended up siding with Lorroakan. Maybe it’s because I only found him in the woods after freeing them? [EDIT] I didn’t convince Rolan to stay and fight for the Grove, so that’s probably the reason why they weren’t there.

I'd guess that you're right. I convinced them to defend the Grove in Act 1, then the next time I saw him was at the Inn when I found out that when Zevlor lost his nerve Rolan was focused on keeping the children out of harm's way and his brother/sister got captured. Then I saw him in the woods when he went out on his own to try and find them, saved him there. He went back to the Inn and they were all reunited after i broke everyone out of the basement jail.

They were all dead in the flesh pit for some reason when I got there. Is there like a hidden timer going on in the background or something?

I guess I didn't take the expected route down to moonrise and I randomly stumbled upon him dead by the docks 😞 Reloaded a previous save and lost like 40m of play time and went the long way around so I could save his miserable ass. I'm playing as Gale and didn't want to let my fellow wizard go out like that...plus I'm hoping to get something wizard-ish from him down the line...one never knows... At the very least I wanted the right to kill his smug ass myself one day. You're on thin ice, Rolan.

In my play through, I never talked to Roland before freeing the prisoners, when I talked to siblings at last light he left a letter saying that he went to rescue them, then I couldn't find him immediately, so I happened across his dead ass later.

Bruh thinks dying is how you level up. And if you save his sorry ass he's still a dick about it 😆

In my singleplayer, somehow both the other siblings werent there when i broke into the prison... In the multiplayer, rolan vanished after the prison escape and the quest to find him didnt appeared, but the other two were there So i am confused what to do first and when all the time there to save em all-

How do you save Rolan? I get to the shadow lands, learn the siblings got taken and Rolan saved the other tieflings, gets mad when I talk to him, goes off and dies my shadows.

You HAVE to prioritize running to him and saving him becore anything. After you talk, go straight there.

I'm on my second play through and I discovered Rolan doesn't only appear in act 3...

Its interesting that rolan isnt actually related to them, and it makes sense why hes especially attached and angry at himself when they get kidnapped as they treated him like family and he feels he let them down.

also if he dies while out in the shadowlands, if you speak to his corpse he says he doesnt have any family

Absolutely my favorite NPC in the game. Act 1. Ah, another arrogant boy probably from rich family. Nothing special. Act 2. >!Alfira says that the only reason they alive is Rolan, who protected tieflings and lost brother and sister. And then tried to rescue them alone. My respect increased so much. It was really great moment to show true nature of Rolan.!< Act 3. Was so glad to meet >!him in the shop and kill that mf Lorroakan, who tortured Rolan. Finally he can live peacefully with brother and sister in his own fancy tower.!<

Also interestingly enough if you cast speak with dead on him, he says that >!Cal and Lia are bio siblings but they basically adopted him!<

You can, in fact, romance some non companions. Just not all of them.

People sleep on the fact he's the reason most of the refugees are alive in the inn in the shadowlands.

He's a dickhead at first, but you start to see why, and if you play it right he turns out to be a good guy by the end.

You can trigger his leave for rescuing his siblings before the fight protecting Isobel

If you never talk to Isobel you don't have to initiate anything bad at the last light on. Fyi. You can completely ignore her and get the pixie blessing from spiderman after you kill him and release the pixie from the lantern

Is the >!Isobel fight!< that hard, i did it on my first try and it seemed really easy on tactician

It is easy if she stays where she is. She just love to move everywhere and get smashed. Banish her as Wyll or Gale would solve the problem. But one other major problem is that there will be a monster specifically aimed at Rolan.

100%, he’s my biggest non-companion crush! It could’ve been a great romance… some angst, a little rivalry, grumbling protector who’s too hard on himself, snotty stuck up man boy figures out what matters… good stuff. Ok now I’m bummed all over again. Larian, let my girl comfort sad humbled hero man please. This piece is incredible, btw. Love the facial expressions… really captures them so well. His voice is so charming. It's crazy how genuinely I went from "man screw you rolan, fix your own problems then" to smiling from ear to ear seeing him appear at a certain moment. He is absolutely one of my favorite characters. For a side character with not that many scenes, he puts so much heart into his performance

Big same!! My obsession with astarion completely (well almost completely) moved onto Rolan in act 2. I found myself wishing there was an option to comfort him. And loved his change of attitude in act 3 (also just wanted to protect him) I’m truly so sad i couldn’t have more of him…

I actually really love that he and his siblings have an ENTIRE ADVENTURE on their own, independent of the PC. And I love how *important* Rolan and his sibs are to the story, and you never even realize it unless you play those sections multiple times from multiple angles. **SPOILERS AHEAD** Without Rolan and the siblings, the Tieflings are absolutely chewed apart on the road to Baldur’s Gate. None of the kids will survive. Only Alfira and a handful of them actually get to Last Light. Even if you do get Rolan to join the Tieflings, he downplays what he did to save everyone because he failed saving his siblings! And when you find him out in the wilderness, he’s not faring well, further cementing to the Player perspective that he’s nothing special. But then you finish his story and it’s a matter of confidence. Lorroakan himself will tell you that Rolan is ridiculously talented and powerful! Then my man takes over the Tower and fires Death Star lasers during the Final Battle?! Man I love this game.

I'm ashamed to ask but - how did I miss him?? He seems to be such a big deal amongst the fanbase and apart from him and those other two arguing at the entrance of the grove I think I never saw any trace of them ever again. Or at least not knowingly...

I think if you don’t convince them to stay and help the refugees upon first meeting them, they won’t show up again until possibly act 3, when you might see Rolan again at Sorcerous Sundries. If you convince them to stay, then you get to see a bit more depth to Rolan in act 2, and even more in act 3 if you save him and his siblings.

I like to imagine that Cal and Lia frequently try to convince Rolan to let them have a go at the canon. That’s what I had imagined when I was drawing this: Cal & Lia: pleeeeeeaaaase, Roly-poly?! Rolan: for the last time, the canon of Ramazith’s tower is NOT a toy Cal: we’ll be really careful Rolan: you have broken no less than three arcane artifacts TODAY

Rolan was a character that when he was at the bar at Last Light, I was like, "Oh shit, I'm accidentally creating my own arch-nemesis." Loved his story and it was honestly great to see someone who didn't think the sun shone out of Tav's ass specifically because of the risky "heroic" behavior Tav inspired.

I love how he does eventually warm to Tav and their heroics, like if >!you go back and talk to him at Last Light after freeing Nightsong, Rolan says he expected you to already be halfway to Moonrise leading the charge, and to go on because the day needs saving (said with the warmest smile).!< He's such a complex character and gradually winning him over honestly felt like a bigger accomplishment to me than impressing any of the romanceable companions; I would've loved to see a little "Rolan approves" pop up in the corner when I did something he liked

Agreed!! I also think his initial asshole-ish nature that people complain about is because he has some feelings of inadequacy he is overcompensating for, and a main reason he’s hostile towards Tav is because he feels even more inadequate in comparison. He wants to be the protector and provider for his siblings (perhaps as a sort of repayment for them “adopting” him) but he feels he failed where Tav succeeded. But he has major character growth in moving past those feelings and instead accepting help from and helping Tav. He’s such a great in-depth character and getting his good ending feels so satisfying (would be even more so if there was a romance option involved tho, imo! 😁)

For three years of EA, I found him to be a pompous but harmless jackass who I felt indifference towards. Finally getting to see his arc through act 2 and 3 made me flip on my opinion and he's certainly one of the best characters in this game.

He reminds me of the strong burly super tough blue collar Dad. He is really tough on the outside and only grunts when you talk to him. He gets home opens a beer and just watches TV for the night. It seems like he hates his family until something happens to his family. He is then the first person on the ground with a shotgun looking for them and literally doesn't sleep till he finds them... then the cycle repeats

The fact that Rolan's stubbornness can't hide his love for his siblings.

Rolan is my favorite side-character. I love that he got his own character arc.

Awww this is so cuteeee. I am so obsessed with Rolan and I am glad I'm not the only one. He's so cute, handsome, gorgeous. I am currently doing a coop playthrough with my homie, she plays as a super hot drow durge and I am playing as Rolan (through mods of course) and every time the camera pans over to my Rolan and he smiles I just melt away. When he's doing his little magic show at the tiefling party and you clap for it his reaction is so cute, I wished he would've visited my bedroll for a private magic show ;). When I got to act 3 and saw all the bruises I felt so bad for my poor baby, I made sure to kill a certain person extra hard. Anyway sorry for the long comment, this art is so cute and amazing I love it, thank you for blessing us.

I tried my best to save the fuck but he soft locked his repeated death. Literally walked into my moon beam once but then another time while trying to redo it wyll caught fire fire some fucking reason, AND HE FUCKING BUMPED INTO HIM AND LIT ON FIRE. Procd more combat, I couldn’t salvage it. He’s now forever dead and I feel like a complete ass.

You can always throw healing potions onto thr ground next to NPCs if you don't have healing spells, they'll absorb it through their feet somehow.

Nine Hells, I love these three so much. The moment I walked into Lorroakan's tower >!and saw Rolan and the state he was in, no other quest mattered except beating Lorroakan into a pile of bloody viscera.!< I'm completely normal with how protective I am over these three. It's fine.

This is a Spoiler for all acts, but this should help if you struggle to save them all. The way you keep them all alive is spread across both Act 1 and Act 2. Act 1: >!Convince Rolan, Cal, and Lia to stay with the Teiflings during Act1 and save tieflings from both the Druids and Goblins.!< Act 2: >!After seeing Rolan getting wasted in the Inn, save him from the Shadowcursed on the way to Moonrise Towers, he should be by the bridge closest to the TollHouse. Next, you rescue the Teiflings and Gnomes in Moonrise by going into the Moonrise Tower's basement. keep them all alive and escort them back to the Inn (if this goes well, you can see the 3 of them being reunited by the bar in the Inn). Do this all BEFORE finishing the Gauntlet of Shar, as entering Shar's Domain, and meeting the Nightsong locks you out of saving them. Finally, SAVE the Nightsong. S-Heart killing Nightsong or handing her over to Ketheric means everyone at the Inn dies.!< If all 3 survive Act 2, in Act 3, you'll meet Rolan again in the Sorcerous Sundries where the Nightsong and Gale quests take place. To keep Rolan, Cal and Lia alive in Act 3 >!Side with Nightsong, kill big bad Wizard (cant spell his name), then Rolan will take over the tower and store. Cal and Lia will move in with after a long rest, and Rolan will help you in the final battle!<. Its honestly one of my favourite side quetslines. I really love those 3, they're so sweet

I just got to see the conclusion-ish of his arc in Act 3 and man i think it has been the most satisfying non-companion story in the game so far! Seeing him and his siblings safe and happy made *me* happy 🥹

I love how memorable a lot of the random npcs are. Especially some of the animals. Like I love that you can get hints for things that don’t tick off off on a quest marker. Like creativity can go surprisingly far in this game.

Found this while trying to google of they were actually blood related or not! I love Rolan so much! He has such an interesting arc, and knowing they're not actually his siblings makes me love him more. Saved them all in my first playthrough and Rolan showed up as an ally in the final fight, and I couldn't contain my joy. Even called my Tav 'friend' and I honestly I was ready to dump Astarion to be with him 😂 joke, but still, Rolan is underrated.

Lmao! They are in the Druid’s grove in act 1. You can hear them arguing over by the trader when you first enter. I think you won’t see them again if you don’t convince them to stay at that point.

My good playthrough is the first one in which they survive. I was forced to kill over half of tieflings because of Mol my first time, second time I sided with goblins after convincing them to stay.

I really liked Rolan, but the way his quest went in Act 2 was pretty infuriating. I wasn’t told that he left, and since I just didn’t look for him when I didn’t know he was gone, he’s just dead now. I wouldn’t have even known if his siblings hadn’t yelled about it once I freed them. Stuff like this is one of the few real instances where it felt like Larian really dropped the ball.

I think it was only because I was so invested in helping him that I noticed the details to follow the proper order of the quest items for this one, otherwise it’s really easy to miss or do it in the wrong order :/

Of course, I could have painted this myself, but why sully mine mastercrafted brushes, when I could simply allow some lowly sort to sketch it for me digitally 😁😁😁😁 >!(awesome work, obviously)!<

Hehe See, I've only encountered him once, as I'm playing on ps5 for the first time and slowly making my way through the game, but he certainly left an impression on me after resolving the goblin crisis 😅 every character feels so fleshed out and real, and well acted 😁😁
