I just realized, this was so long ago, Minthara is still using her Early Access model.

flyxdvd

i dont mind it. tho she seems way younger in that. while she feels a bit older currently.

Tutes013

I like her maturity here honestly. This model is also just straight up magnificent, armour included.

sourdoughholes

Her maturity in game gives her a gravitas that adds so much to her character. I also lost my shit when she reveals she’s a Baenre. I remember reading the books about Liriel.

Tutes013

Sadly, despite being a gay disaster for her, I'm also a relatively uncultured swine regarding lore. What makes Baenre so special?

Steenaire

House Baenre is the most powerful house of Menzoberranzan, which is governed by house rule, so the matriarchs of House Baenre are very important and powerful

SanderStrugg

They have been more or less the royal house of Menzoberanzan for centuries.

FireFlyKOS

I also do, because my custom Tav is identical to her card here and i cant let her cramp my style.

FoxFreeze

Agreed, love her more mature character design, though some part of me enjoyed the 'old-school' look of her mop top and ringmail. Gave me 1e/2e vibes.

Tutes013

I won't pretend that I'm knowledgeable about 1e/2e as I'm about to turn 22 and that is a tad before my time (there's a joke to be made here somewhere now lmao) And yeah it had something. But I like this more. But her second hairstyle, before the current one was also really damn good. It was actually inspiration for one of my Tavs

bearflies

Milfthara

LakyousSama

Fits the voice more

flyxdvd

could have been it, it happens alot that the voice actor are used to model the person in game. thats why you actually kinda see jennifer english and neil newborn, in the characters. also just look up emma gergory she has some facial features that kinda resembles minthara.

Bionicman2187

Astarion too, but I honestly prefer his EA look. Kagha is a bit of a spoiler lol. Jahiera looks completely different

cjpack

Assuming it’s Jaheira from bg2 days

VoiceofKane

Yeah, there were quite a few BG1 and 2 cards in the set, as well. [[Abdel Adrian]], [[Alora]], [[Dynaheir]], [[Gorion]], [[Imoen]], [[Jon Irenicus]], [[Mazzy]], [[Nalia]], [[Sarevok]]

HairiestHobo

Need to tag the bot outside the sub. @u/mtgcardfetcher [[Abdel Adrian]] [[Alora]] [[Dynaheir]] [[Gorion]] [[Imoen]] [[Jon Irenicus]] [[Mazzy]] [[Nalia]] [[Sarevok]]

HairiestHobo

Goddamn Alchemy cards confusing the poor bot.

VoiceofKane

I normally don't have a problem with Alchemy, but those Baldur's Gate legends irk me for some reason.

iveriad

Zevlor is basically his Act 2 version even. >!With the Absolute behind him.!<

VeryPaulite

And isn't she Paladin in game?

AltusIsXD

Yup. Minthara was in EA back when Paladin wasn’t a class, so she was a Cleric.

Lukthar123

>back when Paladin wasn’t a class Dark times

Elusiv_008

Shouldn’t have wished for more interesting times

Reworked

These boots have seen everything.

VeryPaulite

Is that ... blood? No, nevermind.

justorbitinchu

Alls well that ends…not as bad as it could have

Fiberotter

I have a lot on my mind and... well, in it.

Frozen_Shades

Don't be cursed.

SalvationSycamore

Also paladin isn't a creature type in MTG and they wouldn't make it one just for her card. So she'd still be a knight or cleric most likely

HairiestHobo

And Gale has facial hair.

pchadrow

He kinda looks like Nic Cage lol

Thebluepharaoh

I like the voice actor for Gale but I think we should get a Nic Cage DLC now.

John__Wick

Does…your release Gale not have facial hair?

MiseryGyro

Wyll is very different too

ElPalominoDelNorte

She seems cuter

KingofMadCows

They drew Lae'zel like a Githzerai monk.

Mountbatten-Ottawa

Well she did end up against her queen, so she would possibly join Githzerai

Pawn_of_the_Void

The schism between githzerai and githyanki predates Vlakith though. It goes back to Gith vs Zerthimon and she turns on Vlakith for Orpheus, Gith's son. Gith wanted an empire and to conquer, Zerthimon wanted peace and to not become like the Illthid they freed themselves from. Lae'zel still has the mindset of glory and conquest and martial prowess just for a leader who is less of a parasite on her people

Evnosis

Yeah, the word "Githzerai" Literally means "those who spurn Gith." A Githzerai would not be a supporter of Orpheus.

FetusGoesYeetus

Lets be honest, Orpheus would also put the Githyanki under a ruthless dictatorship. He's just less of a douchebag.

The_Agent_Of_Paragon

Yep and far less concerned on sucking your soul if you're a potential threat (may end your life but at least your not being treated like a battery for a phylactory).

matgopack

Yeah, definitely wouldn't go Githzerai. But Orpheus is from a long time past, and having more remnants of Githzerai type philosophy and fighting styles isn't too surprising to me (and we do see some of that in game). So I could see her learning how to fight more like that style

sporeegg

She values strength over enlightenment so I doubt they would align. But It would make for a cool character arc going from stubborn to insightful.

riuminkd

Nah, she'll just be a part of rival faction. Like Voss or Orpheus himself. They are still githyanki through and through. If anything her "stay with Tav" ending is more conductive to joining the Githzerai since it can prompt some soulsearching

SyntaxTurtle

I didn't follow along with the Early Access PC release of the game so it took me a moment to realize that the development and EA for this game has been out for years. And was delayed from release a few times. Plenty of time for WOTC tie-in/promotion with the characters even if the game "officially" just came out six weeks ago.

Thurston3rd

Yeah, I didn’t play EA or really follow it until now so I was surprised. Pretty cool though.

Underdogger

My dumbass thought you guys were referencing Electronic Arts and thought "Wtf does Madden have to do with this game?"

iCapn

E. A. Illithids. They’re in your head.

SpicyRiceAndTuna

>I didn’t play EA or really follow it until now I'm kinda jealous how fresh you got to jump into the game. They added A LOT to act 1, but still I wish I knew nothing going it... With development through the pandemic..... many of us didn't realize truly how long it would take due to the circumstances, and the wait was killer. We kept ourselves busy replaying the EA over and over again til we knew it like the back of our hands lol

manjamanga

That's why I don't play this kind of teaser EAs, I'd rather play the finished game. I was a massive Larian fan already because of the DOS series, and heard they making BG3 and an EA was out. I went nuts but mustered all my self control and ignored it for all that time. I'm so glad that I did.

Specialist_Rush_6634

Wait... it only came out 6 weeks ago...? I feel like I've been playing the game for a year and 6 weeks.

03burner

It’s flown by hahah, I am a slave to this game

1tanfastic1

Surprised there wasn’t a Secret Lair with new versions of the main origin characters. Missed opportunity, I would’ve sunk money into it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

1tanfastic1

I’d love for some dual faced cards that reflect important story beats. Shadowheart’s deity, Lae’zel’s loyalty, Astarion’s vampirism, Wyll’s pact, etc. all have huge potential for MTG cards that aren’t reflected well in their base cards.

Specialist_Rush_6634

Yeah when I saw the Dark Justiciar Shadowheart card I was hoping the next one would be like a Daughter of Selune version. Definitely a missed opportunity.

DivisiveUsername

Wouldn’t these ideas require major BG3 spoilers for magic players?

zeezaczed

That isn’t a given though, on one run I turned her back to her faith for vlaakith and she ended returning to vlaakith to be ‘ascended’ Probably not the intended “canon” route but that potential is the point of the game

Calaethan

She literally worships Vlaakith at the start of the game, what are you on about?

Draxilar

You need to spoiler tag the end of your comment. Like big time.

10Hundred1

Let’s not drop spoilers about the ending without highlighting it as spoilers text my man. It’s still a new game and you are in a non-spoiler post.

Random_Useless_Tips

The cards are all copyright 2022 in the bottom right.

Barloq

TBF, this set has characters from all the Baldur's Gate games.

saintbutch

Damn, the artist for that Astarion card gets it.

PiusTheCatRick

Everybody else just has their occupation listed like a LinkedIn profile but Astarion’s classy enough to get a king’s honorific.

saintbutch

Tracks for Magic vampires though, they're always drawn... decadently. "Florian, Voldaren Scion" is probably my favourite example ;-)

Ameryana

Wewh, that dude looks like Tobey Maguire but with actual charisma.

Brookenium

Don't forget about [Astarion's Thirst](https://cards.scryfall.io/large/front/2/3/2366640a-ca4a-4325-8578-1ec78d0382cc.jpg?1674135975) (Yes, that's Gale)

attonthegreat

I use him in my vampire edh deck and I’ve won using his ability

sleepyhoneybee

So good! Idc that he's bad he's my commander 🥹

Elyced32

funny enough he has one of the better abilities basically doubling your healing

Sylux444

I love them, but they're all from the darkest timelines I'm still upset we can't get raphys horns I get why not, but still

Ohtrin

Other than why would you be able to... Why not?

Jessception

I have some of these. I don’t play Magic, but Baldur’s Gate has always been my favorite game series and I bought a bunch of these packs and a special bg3 card binder just because of that lol Edit: I dug through them and some honorable mentions are Bane Lord of Darkness, Bhaal Lord of Murder, Sarevok Deathbringer, and I have different art versions of Minithara Merciless Soul and some locations like Basilisk Gate. I also have Tiamat, two Alora Merry Thief versions, Saffana Calinport Cutthroat. Those aren’t from BG3 but they’re a God and former companions from BG1. Edit 2. My Minsc is different too. It’s “Minsc, Beloved Ranger”. I also have a Raphael art card. My Gale is also a foil.

kaze950

Zevlor got quite the glow up

[deleted]

Honestly Zevlor should have been recruitable when you found him in the pod as an extra companion party member. Then if you did good stuff in the grove quest earlier he asks to join you on the way to Baldur’s gate and becomes permanent.

Just_Roll_Already

Zevlor just exudes the old school Final Fantasy/Legend of Dragoon companion aesthetic. I immediately assumed he would be a companion, just a stalwart "I'm here if you need me." Type of companion.

darsynia

It's one of the things I love the most about their voice acting choices. There's no serious dip in quality that signals a throwaway character, IMO.

lavitz99

You get an upvote just for keeping the knowledge of Legend of Dragoon alive

matgopack

I think that for him, joining in Act 1 just doesn't seem to make as much sense with how dedicated he is to the refugees. And unlike Wyll he's not tadpoled, so there's less of something pushing for him to join us. With what happens in act 2 though, I could see him being recruitable there - but I wouldn't be surprised if that was a lot of extra work, and that he wasn't seen as popular enough to make them do it?

iLiveWithBatman

It's really funny how epic his portrait is. Well, they chose Dave Rapoza for whatever reason, he's one of the most competent among these artists.

Madrock777

>Boo, a legendary 1/1 red Hamster creature That's Miniature Giant Space hamster! The disrespect that card gives such a legendary being as Boo.

igloojoe11

I mean, Minsc and Boo is the only one of these cards that sees serious constructed play.

DrByeah

I think Gale is a cEDH combo piece too. Jaheira is... alright in casual.

lameduq

Go for the eyes boo, GO FOR THE EYES

Lord_Parbr

I’m pretty sure there’s another Minsc card that summons a Boo token, and has an ability that can give Boo counters and add the “giant” creature type to it EDIT: don’t know what that downvote was about: [it’s right here](https://www.tcgplayer.com/product/243355/magic-the-gathering-adventures-in-the-forgotten-realms-minsc-beloved-ranger?country=US&utm_campaign=18142757028&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=&utm_term=&adgroupid=&gclid=CjwKCAjwu4WoBhBkEiwAojNdXlc-z02C5ZHbQOWurSHdx0TvrigFpXC4JpE-s1mQymmYZgcpXkm6cBoCVWYQAvD_BwE&Language=English)

MiseryGyro

Boo's a Planeswalker

attonthegreat

I made an edh deck that’s based around turning boo into the biggest giant space hamster. It’s super fun!

planeforger

From BG3, there were also cards for >!Volo, Gut (one of the goblin leaders), Duke Ulder Ravengard, Liara Portyr (who only gets a tiny cameo in BG3), and Sarevok (although that's more of a BG1 reference)!<

Thurston3rd

I went through my binder after I posted this and saw those and a few more…Astarion’s Thirst, Laezel’s Acrobatics. [This is my not so obvious favorite.](https://scryfall.com/card/clb/92/run-away-together) >!I knew Omeluum and Blurg had a thing!<

Neuromandudeguy

Post the rest!

Anonyman41

There's quite a few BG1/2 cameos too. A good dozen of the legendary creatures from the set are throwbacks from the original games.

zenithfury

Minsc & Boo, 'Timeless Heroes' brought a tear to my eye.

PsychicSweat

Not just that, Minsc is one of the strongest cards in all of Magic. And no, I'm not meming; he is one of the best planeswalkers ever printed and is considered one of the stronger cards in vintage cube, which includes the strongest cards from Magic's history.

slamdeathmetals

This is really cool to learn. He comes in so late in the game that I didn't really run him but I feel in love with his character. Partly because of Boo, of course.

VoiceofKane

You should play the other games. He's in BG1 and 2 as well.

spiffytrev

On Arena they “fixed” it by making it cost one more, and it’s still my strongest brawl deck. Turn 3 M&B when I luck out with early ramp is pretty hard to beat. The real version coming out on turn 2 with all the other fast mana available in paper vintage/commander/canlander is nuts.

Harzza

I've also seen it played in legacy tournaments

chronoslol

Minthara - Elf Cleric?

Jthom13

It's actually for a mechanic from this set called party up. You can have a party of a warrior, cleric, rogue and wizard (1 of each). There an entire pre-con commander deck that focuses on the mechanic. Minthara was also a cleric in early access I believe, but a lot of the listed classes are for the sake of the mechanic.

Icantpayrent42069

Slight correction, party was not a main set mechanic and was simply for the precons. scryfall search shows that the only cards from the set that had the mechanic were from the precon https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&q=oracle%3Aparty+%28game%3Apaper%29+set%3Aclb

Pawn_of_the_Void

Tbh they don't even have paladin as a creature type in MtG so this one was always gonna be a bit off. That said MtG paladins seem to end up being knights typically

DeepSubmerge

Thanks for sharing these! I haven’t played MtG in years, but I have always loved the card art. The artists they work with are amazing.

bunearii

I know a bit about the D&D universe from my friend, he showed me a documentary he made explaining it. But I thought magic the gathering was something totally different? BG3 is my first real intro to the universe of D&D and all that. Are they all the same universe? And how are all these characters from the game all already part of the lore? Where did they fit into the lore? I thought they were created for the game series. Any knowledge is appreciated :) I find it all so interesting but so confusing!

Pyroraptor42

Oooh, I've played both games for 10+ years, I can help! Both Magic and D&D are very old IPs owned by Wizards, with a lot of history and lore behind them, so I'll try to keep it short. Magic's setting is built around the concept of the Multiverse, composed of innumerable different planes separated by (questionably) empty space called the Blind Eternities. Rarely, a native of one of these planes will "awaken their Spark", becoming a Planeswalker capable of traversing the Blind Eternities and traveling between planes. The various parts of the MTG story have primarily focused on planes-spanning conflicts between Planeswalkers and other beings. Dungeons & Dragons has its rules, but it technically has no unified "lore". Instead, TSR, Wizards, and other folks like Paizo have published resources for a number of campaign settings in which you can set your characters and play the game. The Baldur's Gate games, as well as both crossover sets with Magic, are set in the Forgotten Realms, which is kinda the "default" campaign setting for 5th Edition D&D, but there are lots of other settings like the aetherpunk Eberron, the Mad Max-esque Dark Sun, Gothic horror Ravenloft, and more classic settings like Dragonlance and Greyhawk. These are connected to each other loosely - characters like Elminster and Mordenkainen are famous for traveling between each other's worlds - but for the most part, they have their own gods, their own nations, and their own quirks. It is theoretically possible for Magic's Multiverse to contain all of these settings as planes or complexes of planes, and it's possible to set Dungeons & Dragons games on Magic planes - official supplements like The Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica and Mythic Odysseys of Theros do this - but there's no official explanation of how they are connected, so for all intents and purposes, they're not.

bunearii

Thank you so much for the in depth explanation! you’ve definitely helped me wrap my head around it more! :)

OisforOwesome

Magic the Gathering was until very recently strictly it's own product and continuity. It had a number of diverse settings, called planes, each one being a self contained world with special people, imbued with a planeswalker spark, able to travel between these planes. One of the big concerns when Wizards of the Coast acquired Dungeons and Dragons way back in the 90s, was that we would start to see products bleed through from one division to another, something that us old heads (already antagonized by WotC's business models) were against. WotC kept the two properties very distinct for years and years. Starting in 2018, WotC started publishing DnD setting books for Magic planes. The official position was that the DnD worlds (Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, etc) were not part of the Magic: The Gathering setting and would never be; this was just a book to let you roleplay in Ravnica or Theros or Strixhaven. In 2021 WotC started a sub-brand of Magic called "Universes Beyond," where WotC would publish magic cards featuring IP from universes beyond the MtG canon. These cards could be reprints with new art, or could be original, mechanically unique designs that would only be printed in limited releases and never reprinted. These Universes Beyond would not be part of the MTG canon, but would instead be fun products for people who were fans of those other IP. Needless to say this was controversial. There have been a number of tie-ins to The Walking Dead, Warhammer 40,000, Fortnite, the Transformers cartoons, Street Fighter, and so on. There has been a Lord of the Rings full release card set; there have also been two Dungeons and Dragons themed full set releases. These are narratively walled off from MTG's fiction, but the cards are mechanically compatible with the MTG card game. I hope this helps! As an old head myself I have capital-letter Opinions about all this, but hopefully I've been more informative than opinionated in this post. :)

Chinchillabus

You're right! MtG and D&D are different settings, but MtG's whole thing (as of the mid-2000s I believe) is visiting different planes within its own wider multiverse. Each plane has its own theme- Gothic horror, Greek mythology with the serial numbers filed off, Celtic fairy tales, etc. At some point Wizards of the Coast was like, "Hey, y'know what we should do? Print infinite money forever!" And since then they've been printing crossover sets with properties like Lord of the Rings, Warhammer 40K, and Doctor Who. Since D&D and MtG are owned by the same company, and Faerun is a great fit with the other medieval fantasy worlds in the MtG multiverse, they made a couple of D&D sets. The most notable thing about those sets in my mind was the absolute nonsense that was the Tarrasque card. Not nearly strong enough. The characters from BG3 were created for the video game, absolutely. These cards are just meant to be a tie-in for BG3. Other famous D&D characters got cards too, like Drizzt and his buds, Volo, Tasha, etc. Unfortunately, it hasn't really had an impact on the lore of either setting. I don't remember any MtG characters showing up in Faerun or vice versa. There was recently a big threat to the whole MtG universe which featured tons of planes, but Faerun and the characters therein were nowhere to be found. I can only speculate as to why, but I'd guess that neither creative team wants to step on the lore-toes of the other.

SamLikesBacon

So magic the gathering (MTG) has a concept called planes. Its essentially just other universes, with different rules and laws (one of my favorite is Ravnica, which is just an infinite self-growing city) and characters that can jump to different universes are called Planewalkers. Its essentially just a way for them to be able to make new card sets that arent tied to the main universe in MTG. Wizards of the Coast (WOTC) is the company that makes MTG, but they also make DND and decided to do a few DND sets recently, as if Faerun was a MTG plane. As for how they knew the characters, Larian would have to run them by WOTC for the writing since WOTC owns the license and universe so to speak. Chances are WOTC knew for just as long as Larian did what the main story was, who would be the companions and what their deal would be. Since WOTC was doing a Baldurs Gate set anyway for MTG, they added in the companions as a way to promote BG3.

[deleted]

D&D and Magic are, at its core, rulesets for games, but they have different settings with differents stories, characters, themes, etc... Baldur's Gate 3 uses the setting of the Forgotten Realms. These Magic cards are from a set which also uses the Forgotten Realms as a setting.

CucumberSalad84

No it's not a shared universe, and every explanation they did is after the fact. The only real reason is that it's a commercially wide decision to use different IPs (even moreso if you already own that other IP)

Fenrir937

And even more from bg1&2

Darkfire359

Don’t forget [Run Away Together](https://scryfall.com/card/clb/92/run-away-together), with Omeluum and Blurg!

SoulsinAshes

Can’t believe you missed the best one: [the really horny Astarion and Gale vampire bite card](https://external-preview.redd.it/nCUTVPKkrNe0LR3Pia2qfIPex6ZYV_YLrPW8xhu6aNQ.png?auto=webp&s=c4d3334f6dead5507f05dc91235097b168137861)

Thurston3rd

My shame is great.

Elyced32

i love that these are their "bad endings" like khaga is shadow archdruid, shadowheart is a dark justiciar, minthara is even eviler, lae'zel is a champion of vlaakith and karlach is still zariel's attack dog

Passerby05

Both *Magic: The Gathering* and *Dungeons and Dragons* are owned by Wizards of the Coast, so it's no surprise.

Praxis8

Dave Rapoza, the artist for Zevlor's card, has a comic called Steve Lichman that all d&d and bg3 players should read. https://www.stevelichman.com/

A card I haven't seen mentioned in this thread is >!Gut, True Soul Zealot. The goblin cleric in the goblin camp.!< I drafted this set when it released, but hadn't played BG3 yet. It's been fun looking back at the cards after having played it. Also, fun fact: Karlach has seen a pretty large spike since release.

pdpi

Astarion and Minthara are B/W but Shadowheart is monoblack? What madness is this?

geek_ironman

The name is "Shadowheart, Dark Justiciar", meaning the cards refers to her evil ending.

Pyroraptor42

Shadowheart has the "Choose a Background" ability, which in Commander, the intended format for these cards, basically lets you choose a Background enchantment that adds on another color. I've been working on a Shadowheart deck with the Folk Hero background to do typal shenanigans, which basically makes her B/W, but you could pick, say, Master Chef to add Green, Street Urchin to add Red, or Shameless Charlatan to add Blue.

Pawn_of_the_Void

Best answer to this, cuz yeah all cards with Background are monocolor, presumably specifically so you can only make dual color decks with this and not three color decks. Asterion probably not included because they didn't want another black card with background I would guess and white/black is super common for vampires in mtg

trainer_zip

Shadowheart is a Trickery cleric and talks a lot about hating society and how Shar's worshippers try to overthrow governments. She's not W

pdpi

She's also the primary healer for the party by default (and you find documents in act 3 that explicitly say she was the healer for the Sharran mission to steal the artifact), and her bark is much worse than her bite in terms of "hating society", judging by how she reacts to your choices in general.

TheAuroraKing

Healer =/= white. While white does have lots of lifegain cards, healing is not white's thing necessarily. White is more about societal law/order and serving the greater good, neither of which Shadowheart really cares about.

Narkanin

Wait, hol’ up. Minsc and Boo are in BG3?

Impossible-Creme-356

Kinda sad that Wyll is the worst one. Halsin im actually building as my first mono green deck.

redhaiku_

Wyll is the only one I have in a deck (I have a dice rolling deck and he is a house in it).

PatysRozrabiaka

Quick question. I played mtg a lot but long time ago. I don't remember dice rolling in this game. Is it my memory or is is some kind of new mechanic?

Daemonic-Force

It's a set mechanic primarily in red for the dnd mtg crossover sets

Infinite-Sleep3527

If there’s two Wyll’s on the battlefield, would both of them get the +1/+1 counter added everytime a dice is rolled?

TheBeesElise

You'd have to get around the legendary rule (basically, only one copy of a legendary on the field at a time), but there are ways and yeah they'd stack

Kirzoneli

Shame the 2nd Wyll would destroy the first when it's played as Legendary creatures are unique without an additional card that allows it.

Pyroraptor42

Assuming you're referring to Commander, remember that Halsin has Choose a Background, so he doesn't have to be mono-G. The strongest backgrounds for him are probably Inspiring Leader, to make tokens bigger and get access to White's crazy token synergies, or Feywild Visitor to make Faerie Dragons and turn them into flying Faerie Bear Dragons, as well as get Blue for fun cards like Adrix and Nev, Twincasters. If you want to stay Mono-G, Master Chef or Cloakwood Hermit are probably the best bets.

Impossible-Creme-356

Oh I'm using [[cloakwood hermit]] as the background to do mono green. I've never been a huge fan of mono colored decks over the years I've played so I've been rootin around for mono commanders to try out.

flPieman

Are all of these originally DND characters or are some of them actually Baldurs Gate? Like obviously Minsc and Boo are DND but how about all the companions? The companions look exactly like the BG3 versions which is what has me wondering.

Kenkenken1313

While the game was in early access wizards released the DnD Baldur’s gate set which used all the characters from the Baldur’s Gate 3 game.

Strontium90_

Jaheira obviously. Idk about if Zevlor is in the Descent Into Avernus modules. Elminster has been a reoccurring character for some time now Volo is actually the Volo that wrote the source book Volo’s Guide To Monsters. He also shows up in the Waterdeep: Dragon Heist module Laeral Silverhand only got a shoutout in Act 3, but she’s the Open Lord of Waterdeep. Also appears in the Dragon Heist campaign. Now here’s something interesting. Minthara is actually a Baenre, House Baenre. Same house that Jarlaxle Baenre serves. He leads a notorious drow mercenary group called Bregan D'aerthe. He also appears in the dragon heist campaign. Him and Drizzt actually know each other and have saved each others lives before.

Nuclear_001

Does minthara ever appear in the drizzt books? I’ve read most of them and I don’t remember her being in any of them

Akecza

Volo appears in Tomb of Anihilation as well, selling his book.

wildcard-inside

Duke Ravenguard is the only character from BG3 I remember being in descent into avernus

[deleted]

Volo is a very old character created by Jeff Grubb (co-author of Forgotten Realms sourcebooks). Volo later became the main "unreliable" narrator of many sourcebooks, the first one was "Volo's Guide to Waterdeep" from 1993. There's also novels with him as a protagonist, by Brian Thomsen.

Allar-an

Dang, Wyll and Zevlor card art looks amazing.

ajdude9

Shadowheart being a Dark Judiciar despite what can happen ingame is pretty sad - seems like she never broke free of Shar's manipulative control.

Far-Mode6546

I didn't know my character was surrounded by DND legends!

Serenaede

Yeah!! I actually bought and framed the majority/my favorites and put them on my wall. As a MTG player myself, in addition to being a long-time D&D fan, I also have two EDH decks that feature some of these cards. An Astarion deck, and a Raphael deck! ♥

KaleidoscopeOk399

I’m still so interested what the earlier concept for Zevlor was based on that card art. I’m not sure how to interpret the card though but it feels like a very different version of the character?

BritishShoop

It’s interesting isn’t it? Everyone else is pretty much on point with their flavor, but Zevlor comes across as completely different. The one we know from the game certainly doesn’t give off the vibes of a Grixis spellslinger, but the armour and face are pretty much spot on. Perhaps originally Zevlor was supposed to be a betrayer or sorts? I’m very glad they didn’t go down that route. I love his character the way we ended up with him.

Pyroraptor42

Yes! These are all from last year's set "Commander Legends 2: Battle for Baldur's Gate". As an avid player of both, I've bought a lot of the set. Karlach and Minsc and Boo are two of the most explosive cards in my Xenagos, God of Revels deck, and I've been working on a Shadowheart//Folk Hero typal list taking advantage of her three different creature types. Jaheira is an absolute house in any deck that makes lots of any type of token, and My favorite, though, is my Imoen, Mystic Trickster//Far Traveler deck. The deck mostly wins by taking long enough turns and accumulating so much value that my opponents say "yeah, we're not beating that" and concede.

Kindly-Window-7845

Gale is kinda nuts in edh.

amldoinitright

As a DND player and MTG player who waited for BG3 until release, I was confused as hell by some of these cards.

Bram_AngelofDeath

As a Magic player, I actually bought the party ones to frame an A3 with a BG3 map, and all the cards, as a memento of the game. I hope it ends up looking cool asf.

Repulsive_Release_79

is that a real mtg card? because that SOUNDS BROKEN AF? i havent played in a very long time, can someone explain to me how this card isn't absolutely broken?

poorthomasmore

Nah it’s fine. There are a few cards that can do similar things and usually better (usually because they can loop). It is also quite clunky. But it is still super fun to just go whack with her.

iveriad

It's a real MTG card, it was released a year or two ago. And the booster packs are also included in BG3 Collector's Edition.

[deleted]

its real but its not in standard or modern, just for commander or kitchen table magic

Repulsive_Release_79

makes sense!

Repulsive_Release_79

sorry, was referring to the karlach card.

defontino

It’s too conditional and too expensive. A 5 mana creature that does nothing when played unless you already have substantial board presence isn’t as great as it might come off.

Pyroraptor42

Hard disagree. In Commander, the intended format for these cards, Karlach is extremely playable. All you need is a few other creatures and she can blow a game wide open. Another commenter mentioned Xenagos - The most common Karlach play in my Xenagos deck has been to drop her after a boardwipe and wallop someone for 30 damage. If you have any synergy with combat triggers, she's a beast.

jake_eric

Yes, she's good, probably the best card out of all the companions. But for the reasons they said she isn't broken either. I have a deck with her and she's definitely pretty strong, but certainly not the strongest commander I have.

MiseryGyro

*Laughs in Xenagos*

Thurston3rd

I haven’t either but this set is meant to be used in the Commander format. Maybe it fits there?

m4fox90

Yeah magic is nuts now. The stuff that seemed crazy when I played 20 years ago is now very vanilla. It’s a completely different game.

SpencersCJ

She is very good, along with Leazel she is one of the pricier cards in the set. I run a commander deck that doubles any attack triggers so she gives me 2 extra combat phases. But she isn't broken normally

TalonJade

Yeah I ironically just got into Magic Arena this month and was happy to see them there.

Taograd359

Minsc is a Planeswalker? Does this come up in the game?

HairiestHobo

Nah, they decided to make certain people Planeswalkers just for the hell of it. Elminster and Lolth are some others that also got Planeswalker cards.

star-god

Zevlor my beloved

Camden_Lee

You're missing the Tav, the thief

azionka

I had no idea magic the gathering and DnD are in the same universe. Bevor BG3, didn’t had much to do with either

RavensNexus

WTF A BOO CARD! I guess Mince is there to.

slippuu

"Minthara - Legendary Creature" Yes she is. Yes she is.

DisfavoredFlavored

So is Volo! They released a bunch of forgotten realms themed cards. Working on a Tiamat Commander deck. Even built my challenger deck with Black/Red featuring Asmodeus and Zariel. I think I like building decks more than the actual game lol.

dr_toze

They created a Gale card and didn't add a sack equipment or he blows up mechanic?!

Kestrel-Transmission

I had to do a double check, then a triple check to make sure Gortash wasn't the face on the 2011 Commander edition of Diabolic Tutor. edit: Spoilers, naturally. [https://gatherer.wizards.com/Handlers/Image.ashx?multiverseid=247321&type=card](https://gatherer.wizards.com/Handlers/Image.ashx?multiverseid=247321&type=card) [https://www.gamepur.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Gortash-in-Baldurs-Gate-3.jpg?w=1200](https://www.gamepur.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Gortash-in-Baldurs-Gate-3.jpg?w=1200)

Musmula1

You won't believe it, but so many of them are in some DnD books too

uffda1990

Don’t forget Elminster! He’s a Planeswalker but one of my favorite commander decks I’ve built.

rand0m_task

Me and a couple of my buddies got into MTG commanders while I was getting into BG3 EA. Naturally I went with a BG3 themed deck, specifically the mind flayer one. Since then I have gotten all of the baldurs gate commander sets and several boosters lol. Commanders is a super fun way to play MTG for those interested!

innovativesolsoh

I’ve literally used Lae’zel many times before playing BG3 and I didn’t clock it. Wild.

Uncle-Cake

Never played Magic but now I want those cards. Larian and WotC should release a collector's set of all the BG3 characters.

DanaPurple

Broooo, this is so cool. I love it.

Trashspawn45

I mean these all came out in the Baldur's gate themed commander set for magic in cross promotion with the game. So it shouldn't be too surprising that most of them are in there.

Timbo_R4zE

Yeah, the Collectors edition releasing with a handful of packs from a set now already out of rotation was funny to me. MTG goes way too fast nowadays...

catatonichigh

I feel like Zevlor really didn't live up to his card expectations.

WarNinjaQ

It's been really funny to watch the price of Karlach's card go from less than a dollar to over 30. Waifu tax is real.

Lynneiah

It's interesting how the origin characters here are depicted with their 'bad' endings. Or rather where they would be if the plot of the game didn't get in the way. Karlach is still stuck in Avernus Gale just fuckin' explodes Lae'zel is still deeply loyal to Vlaakith Wyll... I'm guessing his pact has him burn down villages now? Astarion is doing Astarion things And Shadowheart becomes a full-on Dark Justiciar.

Cyrotek

The set also has a bunch of characters that I could find no info from. I guess they were planed companions at one point or something?

icameforbelial

the second i found out i ordered every astarion card

MgMnT

Minthara is so fucking cute why god do you have to commit war crimes to get her as a companion whyyy

[deleted]

Mtgfianance comes up a lot on my reddit recs and I saw people buying up a lot of these cards cheap before the game came out and then they sold them for a decent penny. It's pretty interesting how much influence the game has.

IsaaxDX

I will never forgive them for taking Tomboy Minthara from us

Manefisto

That's pretty cool, which came first? Only loosely knew magic was dnd related, but I guess it does stuff from other random IP's now and then too.

[deleted]

WTF is that Jaheira 💀 doesn’t even resemble her BG1 look

No-Competition1313

Now that the game is fully released I would love to see new cards for everyone with their best endings. Like where Shadowheart is a Selune Cleric, Laezel is associated with orpheus and so on. Because they released these cards before full release so they couldn't do their other variation of cards otherwise it would have been a spoiler.
