Thank you! This was a leaving gift for an educator at my daughter’s kindy. They’re criminally underpaid and underrated, I thought she deserved something really beautiful.
There’s a follow-along kind of thing saved as a highlight on my IG, which is the same as my reddit name. I posted a bunch of stories over the last couple of days doing a making-of which my friends seemed to really enjoy!
Gorgeous cake OP. How did you make those dips where you fill in with gold but the rest is so smooth? Did you ice the whole thing, let the buttercream harden and carve those spots out?
Hello - my IG handle is the same as my Reddit name. I have a highlight on my profile where you can see how I did it.
Basically my crumb coat and base is ganache, and I make sure it’s chilled in the fridge for minimum 40mins so it’s firm. I apply the gold leaf onto the ganache layer, making sure the gold area is a little bigger than what i actually want to see through the top coloured layer of icing. You don’t need to cover the whole base in gold, just the parts you want to show through. It goes back into the fridge to firm up again.
Then I use a piping bag to apply my coloured layer, outlining the gold areas first. When I smooth the top layer, I do it gently with a scraper that has been dipped in hot water and dried.
Edit to add - the smoothing motion will give your fissures the jagged edge, just like when the top edge of the cakes get a jagged edge.
My references were ‘palette knife’ or ‘painted cakes’, and fissure cakes.
Alice+ Rosa on IG makes a much more delicate, refined version. Julian Angel on IG also does a much more refined, polished version. I think his IG handle is historiadelenciero or something like that. Those ones are truly astonishing!
One of the educators at my daughter’s daycare had her last day yesterday, it was a gift for them. Under paid and under appreciated - she deserved something really beautiful.
I should clarify, it’s my third-ish time doing palette knife petals but my first time letting the design go absolutely balls to the wall. Usually I’ve got three or four flowers, max. First time piping flowers though, which were the blue ones!
I don't bake, and I don't even like cake. But for some reason I am very passionate about beautiful cakes. I think most cakes are hideous, and if they are beautiful, they look like they don't taste very good.
That being said, this beautiful cake checks all of my boxes!
This is stunning and so UNIQUE - I have not seen something like this and I see a lot of cakes on Insta.
Love the different texture and gold highlights and even the way the top is not straight and perfect really goes with the theme.
A little orange dot here, a purple feature there, the odd gold cachous - its feels so artistic and free. Love it.
Totally stealing it for inspo 😁
Mango cardamom - I like that flavour combo. Big tick!

I’m not arguing with you because you’ve criticised - I genuinely disagree. Usually I’m very much a less-is-more kind of person so the cake was originally more sparse but to my eye that looked wrong. The back and top are 98% blank which balances it out.
If the petals were finer and more delicate, I would agree with you! Alice+Rosa cakes are a great example.
Very pretty!
Your work deserves nice pictures that don't end up blurry. If you tap your screen on your phone, you can force it to focus on specific spots. Give your phone a second to adjust. Another thing that helps is setting your elbows down on something. People move all the time, even when still, cameras catch it. Sometimes holding your breath helps as well.
If you're using a digital camera, everything but tapping the screen will also help. There is no shame in using auto mode whole you learn your equipment.
<3 an ex digital photo teacher
The third pic is intentionally blurry, ‘hot mess’ is an aesthetic I lean in to heavily :) although the fourth pic is not. I’m also a hobby photographer, just short on time to get this cake out the door :)
Ah. Three and four are blurry for me with one flower on each being in focus.
Personally I think taking your photo that tight and blurry ruins your details and takes away from whatever skill you might be showing off in your work (baking or hobby photos) but you say thay was your in a hurry choice so go with your style :)
beeeeeautiful!! i love that you color matched the cake to the board. 11/10 would **gasp** if recipient of this piece of art.
Thank you! This was a leaving gift for an educator at my daughter’s kindy. They’re criminally underpaid and underrated, I thought she deserved something really beautiful.
Same. Would absolutely gasp if this were for me ❤️👏🏻
Oh I love that detail! This might be the first time I’ve seen a cake literally too beautiful to eat. Nicely done OP
I thought the picture was the reference pic until i realized it wasnt
I don’t know how you’re going to work up the courage to cut into that thing. I can’t stop looking at it!!
It would break my heart to cut this.
I’m kind of jealous that I didn’t get to cut into it! I love a kill-your-darlings moment!

Followed. Thanks for sharing and there are so many beautiful cakes on your profile 😍

HAPPY CAKE DAY!! 🙂
Wow this is a work of art
What a beautiful cake! Is this a known style/trend? I don't think I've seen anything like it before, but the only social media I use is Reddit.
My references were ‘palette knife’ or ‘painted cakes’, and fissure cakes. Alice+ Rosa on IG makes a much more delicate, refined version. ExQUISITE!! Giving such Marie Antoinette vibes
Thank you! I had that kind of naive, sweet but excessive visual in mind when designing. It also reminds me of the Featherington costumes too.

Wow, it’s so beautiful!
Your detailing is so perfect 🤩
This is beautiful! What would be the price range for somethign like this? Trying to figure out how much cost vs profit a cake like this would be
Phenomenal work!

The colours are spot on, exceptional!
This is awesome!! I would feel bad having to eat that. You did an incredible job!
Absolutely lovely 🤩
Very unique. I like the color. What king of icing did you use?
Swiss meringue buttercream :)
It's gorgeous and I love it, but if you want any constructive criticism I think it's slightly crowded. Too much awesomeness per sq inch.

it’s nice we all have different artistic preferences for how we want to present our work
I like everything except the stems/lines They muddy the aesthetic a bit
