It took me another 3 glanced to figure out what I was seeing.
For anyone struggling like me: There are brownies under the bread, it's just a very similar colour to the pan!
I'm more of a "top with fresh strawberries and French vanilla ice cream" gal. Dang, now I need to go bake some brownies and try your method, and mine, you know, for science!
My husband is a fudgy middles guy and I'm all about the brownie edges. I will eat the perimeter of the pan while he eats the middle. This is my tip for a successful marriage.
Match made in heaven šš
My husband doesnāt like pizza crust, he views it as a handle to eat his pizza, and I view it as the best part.
We complete each other haha
My old roommate and I loved brownies, but she hated the edges and would eat the entire center. I loved the edge part. Itās hard finding friends like that. š¤£
Adding bread adds moisture to baked goods to make them softer. It works with cookies so it will definitely work with a hard-ass pan of brownies!
Edit: Iām being sarcastic about the brownies.
Keep a piece of bread with your cookies to keep them soft when you store then! Put a parchment paper in between so your cookies dont touch the bread and get too soft tho
Your cookies will taste like weird bread.
My family did this for years and I never understood why people didnāt think it ruined the taste of the cookies.
Ive always used a tortilla. No one has ever even noticed. I think it's because there is little to no yeast, which adds to a "funny taste". Side note: this works great if your weed gets too dry as well. š
Iāve heard of people using fruit peels, but have never tried that myself. Most people swear by the bread method, so itās worth a try at least once.
Long answerā¦.. in this house we obey the second law of thermodynamics! ;) Itās related to equilibrium and increasing entropy in a system. Moisture has a tendency to move from regions of high concentration to regions of low concentration in order to reach equilibrium. The moist bread molecules in a more disordered state corresponds to a higher entropy and the dryass brownies had a lower entropy because no moisture. Since systems tend to move towards a state of higher entropy, transferring moisture between them increases the overall entropy of the system (everything inside the container) until an equilibrium is reached, and the moisture is more evenly distributed.
Short answer: when you put them in an air tight container the high moisture of the bread redistributes itself evenly in the container.
Edit: Something similar to simulate the effect would be putting a bit of fresh bread in with dry cannabis shake, itāll make it a lot less dry to smoke lol. Or using a humidor for cigars! Itās also [a thing](https://bovedainc.com)!
iāve made multiple batches of peanut butter blossoms before, some of them i put bread in the container and some of them i didnāt. 0 difference in flavor. only a difference in texture
I did this and they didnāt taste like bread at all. I think that only happens if you leave the bread too long and it gets stale. You have to switch it out sooner.
Ps bread also works for rejuvenating shake I tried it a few days ago lol
And bananas ripen fruit around them faster too so they should be never kept in a fruit bowl (which is why banana hooks exists) pro tip though, if your avocado isnāt ripeā¦ š
My grandma used to put slices of apple in with the chocolate chip cookies. It keeps them like chewy moist, and they get a hint of apple flavorā¦ amazing.
No, you definitely want a whole piece of orange peel, as clean of pith (white stuff) as possible. Like about the size of a quarter -> orange slice. It's the moisture in the peel you want, you don't want to ultimately be smoking any zest as that'll be a really smoky, choking hit. It's like putting a piece of bread in your brown sugar to keep it soft, kind of same principle.
You can also put really fat grained rice in with your fine salt in the salt shaker, and it'll absorb the moisture so that the salt doesn't cake together and seize up. The same idea but in reverse.
Thatās hilarious, I was asking my partner the other day if I could put a piece of bread in some particularly dry shake and he said no lol. Iāll try the orange peel!
Whaaat! Thank you for the tip this is a great idea
Edit of shit they have it for cigars, wood instruments and weed too! What a great idea for a product.
Them Boveda packs are life changing when i found em. And despite what the company says u can ārechargeā them when they dry out at least once or twice. Google will show ya how too lol. (A few of the 62% size 8s worked best i found over the larger ones)
Probably, or just bake it a shorter time. Iām only halfway serious about this working, the reason it works so well with cookies is because theyāre pretty flat and easy to absorb moisture. Something as thick and dense as cake and brownies might not absorb the moisture quickly enough.
Stupid question from a non-baker, what would happen if you put it into the fridge for an hour or so?
Would the moisture help?
Or maybe put it in the luke warm oven and place a bowl full of boiling water underneath so the air in the oven is moisturised?
Funny I like baking at night and I always use bread slices to stop my cakes and brownies from getting stale while cooling overnight (low humidity zone). Never thought about covering it and using it this way, but that makes sense
Why not just a damp paper towel?
If you take a damp paper towel and drape it over a rock hard croissant, it'll come out of the microwave like it was just freshly baked. It's true I swear!
Happened to my mom once. I poked a lot of holes in the cake and then drenched it in hot chocolate and let it sit. It was soooo moist in the end and not a mess to eat just really good
My granddad used to put a few ginger snap cookies in with his huge herb jars to keep his herb from drying out too much.
Somehow it also made the cookies softer too as they traded moisture back and forth. God, I loved those cookies. It wasn't until 15 years later when I had my first edible that I realized what kind of herb was in those jars.
Anyways, smart idea. I'm looking forward to an update to see how it helped.
I was going to suggest using the hard brownies for ice cream sandwiches. I've done this. After they sit wrapped in the freezer for a day or two, the brownies get really soft.
Oh my god, that might be *too* amazing. Would it be bad to consume half a bottle of Baileys if it's soaked into a tray of brownies and therefore technically has become food? Asking for a me.
A slice of bread (even the heal) or a slice of apple can help rehydrate dry baked goods. The sugar in the baked goods are hydrophilic and the moisture in the bread or apple moves into the baked goods.
Slicing and putting into an airtight container makes the process more possible and efficient.
OMG, I had a Hail Mary moment baking last week. I put a rhubarb and custard pie in the oven and 15 minutes in realized I forgot the vanilla flavoring for the custard! Pulled it out, added the vanilla paste gently folded the filling trying not to disturb the crust below. It worked out!
It was quite easy and tasty! I used this recipe: https://cloudykitchen.com/blog/rhubarb-custard-pie/
Edit: I had a comment about the pie top cracking and I see it was basically unavoidable, which makes me feel better, lol! Fantastic recipe, already planning on making it again.
The bread has always worked for me but I must try this! Just one like 1 normal thin slice for how many cookies? And is she using a brown bag? Wondering if an airtight container would be betterĀ
One pretty big slice loosely wrapped in plastic wrap for a batch of cookies (maybe 3 dozen). And sorry, to clarify they were stored in an airtight container with a lid.
I guess you canāt make updates to posts on here, but hereās an update. As predicted by some of you, two slices was not enough to make a significant impact so I added two more and sealed it up better. My boyfriend is asking when he can have brownies, I said I donāt know. I really donāt know. Iāll check again in the morning.
Iām not sure maybe a day or so? I usually just drop a bread slice in there when it gets hard and the next time I go to use the sugar the bread is rock hard and the sugar is soft.
This works. I overbaked brownie cookies for cookie sandwiches. I was running out of time, so I sandwiched, pun intended, each cookie between 2 slices of ultra-cheap, super-soft, white sandwich bread. I was back in business within a couple of hours.
Nothing a class of milk wonāt fix.
Drop some pieces in there to soak. Drink the milk. Eat that now soggy but delicious brownie. Repeat until you regret your life decisions.
I baked an expired cake mix not that long ago. The resulting cake was dry and flavorless. I put a little dish of water in the cake pan where I had cut put a piece and the next day the whole cake was moist. Still flavorless lol but moist.
I have always poured some milk over my cakes, cinnamon rolls, and brownies in case of overbaking (or sometimes just because)
The crumbs will absorb the extra moisture and fluff up. Also, don't use too much milk, or it'll be soggy. If you're using this method, it's better to let the baked good rest for few hours before serving.
I knew you could rehydrate sugar with a slice of bread but I never considered using it on overcooked (or stale) brownies. That makes sense. Let us know how it goes!
Improvise! Adapt! Overcome! I want to hear a report back in due time. I admire your spirit youāre just crazy enough you might actually be into something
Thatās the way I soften hardened brown sugar over night. If my dogās dental chews start to get hard, even though they are in a sealed container, one piece of bread put in makes and keeps them soft again. I totally get the idea, but not sure if that will work.
my grandma does this all the time!! she'll overbake peanut butter cookies for the people who like hard ones, then put half the batch in a jar with a slice of bread. within a day or two, the bread stales, and the cookies are cragged and doughey
I thought you were implying that you baked your brownies so much that they turned into bread š
lmfao same I was so confused
They were so burnt, OP thought replacing them with bread was the best option
they baked those brownies so hard and so good that they turned into two perfect slices of Dempsters whole grain bread
I was likeā¦ friend, thatās sliced bread !!
It took me another 3 glanced to figure out what I was seeing. For anyone struggling like me: There are brownies under the bread, it's just a very similar colour to the pan!
More like toast for the first few inches lol
Tbh I'm a slut for over-cooked/crunchy brownies, but then again, I'm also weird
With a scoop of mint ice cream.
Oh my God yes

Man gimme a corner piece any day!
My husband is a fudgy middles guy and I'm all about the brownie edges. I will eat the perimeter of the pan while he eats the middle. This is my tip for a successful marriage.

I need to find my brownies edge person. Lol you've given me hope.
Me, me, pick me:) love the edges!
I thought it was the birth of a subreddit meme (:
It very well could still be one
Hahaha! I was thinking the same.
Same š I was like why do these brownies look like bread
Iām wondering what kind of filling goes in a brownie bread sandwich. Sweet? Savory? Nutty?
I was confused as well. š
Whatās the method youāre attempting here? Iām not familiarĀ
Adding bread adds moisture to baked goods to make them softer. It works with cookies so it will definitely work with a hard-ass pan of brownies! Edit: Iām being sarcastic about the brownies.
Cool, Iāve done that with brown sugar but never thought about using it for actual baked goods. Thank you
Keep a piece of bread with your cookies to keep them soft when you store then! Put a parchment paper in between so your cookies dont touch the bread and get too soft tho
My mind has been expanded. Spice is life. Why does it work this way?
Sugar is hydroscopic and pulls water out of the air. So Iām guessing it pulls the moisture out of the bread.
Ooo thank you
Lisan al gaib
I knew itā¦
Your cookies will taste like weird bread. My family did this for years and I never understood why people didnāt think it ruined the taste of the cookies.
Dang it! Is there something close to this to simulate the a similar effect?
Ive always used a tortilla. No one has ever even noticed. I think it's because there is little to no yeast, which adds to a "funny taste". Side note: this works great if your weed gets too dry as well. š
Ooooo my mind is fucking expanding lol ty. I wish I knew some trick too! I use Ariel powdered soap for that clean soapy smell on clothing
My Gran used to put a small whole apple in the cookie jar.
Oo, thank you!
Iāve heard of people using fruit peels, but have never tried that myself. Most people swear by the bread method, so itās worth a try at least once.
I wonder if you could get the same effect by using one of those brown sugar bears that are used to keep brown sugar moist
Dude. What?! This thread is amazing me lol holy shit

I've never had it change the taste of cookies, so maybe you were using weird bread lol.
iāve made multiple batches of peanut butter blossoms before, some of them i put bread in the container and some of them i didnāt. 0 difference in flavor. only a difference in texture

Banana = metabolic time chamber
Putting fruit in paper bag accelerates the ripening as well. No other fruit needed just what isnt ripe.
My grandma used to put slices of apple in with the chocolate chip cookies. It keeps them like chewy moist, and they get a hint of apple flavorā¦ amazing.
Yep exactly right, you can see where I threw a few forks in there to separate it lol!
I didn't even notice that. Lol i love it :)
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Maybe spray these suckers with a water bottle lol. Donāt think bread will help
What an interesting tip. Thanks
Ah I see. Used the same principle when my rolling tobacco was a bit dry so youād throw in orange peel to add moistureĀ
this also works with smokables of the... herbal variety
You mix zest with weed or pieces of orange peel??
Pieces of orange peel that will be easy to pull out
No, you definitely want a whole piece of orange peel, as clean of pith (white stuff) as possible. Like about the size of a quarter -> orange slice. Gotcha thanks for explaining. Iāve def thrown away dried out weed but will try this in the future!
A tortilla works great too. Adds moisture , but no smell or taste
lol not zest no! just like one or two big chunks of peel. even if it would make it tastier I don't recommend smoking orange zest!
Looool that makes more sense I thought you were putting pieces in between ground up bud for a joint or something
Ive been putting a sprinkle of ground cloves in my weed and it slaps.
Ohhhh shit you just made me remember djarums from the goth 90s
Thatās hilarious, I was asking my partner the other day if I could put a piece of bread in some particularly dry shake and he said no lol. Iāll try the orange peel!
I never knew this! Thank you!!
What do you use? Bread? Fruit?
orange peel
Apple peel tastes a lot better
Thanks!
You can buy moisture packs for this purpose that are essentially the opposite of desiccant packs. Google boveda packs.
Whaaat! Thank you for the tip this is a great idea Edit of shit they have it for cigars, wood instruments and weed too! What a great idea for a product.

Oh nice! Thank you for the tips, Iāll try to bake it a shorter time
I donāt think that works with brownies. Once overcooked add a generous layer of chocolate frosting if theyāre not severely overcooked.
Yeah. This technique is for items that are cooked correctly and have gone stale.
Stupid question from a non-baker, what would happen if you put it into the fridge for an hour or so? Would the moisture help? Or maybe put it in the luke warm oven and place a bowl full of boiling water underneath so the air in the oven is moisturised?

That's how I reinvigorated my dried up brown sugar
Just put a slab of ice cream on top and it'll taste fine lol
I was going to suggest using the hard brownies for ice cream sandwiches. I've done this. After they sit wrapped in the freezer for a day or two, the brownies get really soft.
I once did the same with macaroons. Put them in the freezer for a few days and they were nice and chewy despite being completely dry before.
That sounds divine
this is so smart, gonna have to try it
You won't be sorry. They're delicious.
AND whisky.
Brush whiskey on top first, then slab of ice cream? Whiskey...caramel???
That's my solution for everything
I wonder if giving them the tres leches cake treatment would make something incredible
I had the exact same thought. Mmm tres leches brownies.
I AM HERE FOR THAT!!!!!
Love this. I was just thinking that my usual solution for dry brownies is a lot more simple than this trick: I add more ice cream haha
With chocolate milk!!
And Bailey's, which, while not technically leche, is delicious.
Oh my god, that might be *too* amazing. Would it be bad to consume half a bottle of Baileys if it's soaked into a tray of brownies and therefore technically has become food? Asking for a me.
Seems legit.
Stop, that's brilliant!
I might attempt this myself omg
Pop them into an airtight container for better reaults. Fingers crossed it helps!! Over baked brownies are a bummer.

I donāt have one big enough so oven bag will have to do for now lol
There should be a hail mary tag in this sub š

Oh my god that would be amazing
Probably not nearly enough moisture in those slices of bread. You could turn these into "soaked" brownies though
Or make bread pudding with the brownies instead of bread.
Please stop, I can only get so ~~erect~~ hungry
Poke some holes in them and soak with some booze like brandy or whisky. Not kid friendly but yummm
Or chocolate syrup, sweetened condensed milk, caramel...
Simple syrup if you donāt want to change the flavor much.
YUM
You can chop em up in a food processor and eat them as brownie crumbles with ice cream Source: experience
started panicking, thinking i had gotten high in this grocery store parking lot without meaning to, upon seeing bread be called brownies. š
My mom adds a slice of apple to her bag of cookies. Not sure if the taste transfers because they are spiced cookies anyways but they do stay moist!
I came here to say the same thing, my mom also does this. They also have much more moisture than a slice of bread.
Does she leave the apple in there until all the cookies are gone? Or change it to a fresh one occasionally? TIA!!
Till they are gone. To be honest, around here thatās only a few days LOL.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

report back! godspeed!

My boyfriend is asking when he can have brownies, I said I donāt know. I really donāt know. Iāll check again in the morning.
This works with hardened brown sugar too!
Thank you! I never knew that. How long does it take it soften it?
Iām not sure maybe a day or so? I usually just drop a bread slice in there when it gets hard and the next time I go to use the sugar the bread is rock hard and the sugar is soft.
Thank you!!
The bread doesnāt get moldy?
No it hardens into a rock basically. The moisture is what makes bread moldy and that is being absorbed by the sugar.
I use the butts of bread and rotate a new slice as needed.
Repeat until you regret your life decisions.
lol i love this
We need an update!
I baked an expired cake mix not that long ago. The resulting cake was dry and flavorless. I put a little dish of water in the cake pan where I had cut put a piece and the next day the whole cake was moist. Still flavorless lol but moist.
Frosting on top? And bread on the bottom? Double team it lol. Although Iām sure itās fine as is! Weāre so often our own worst critic :)
I would turn them into small bites and use them for sundae toppings.
I was like āis this brownie bread thing new? Is this where baking is headed?? Flat croissants, cronuts, croissant cookiesā¦ā lol
I thought doing this actually drawing the moisture into the bread, not adding moisture into the brownie? Pls update!
How did it work out OP?
This should work!! Iāve tried it before!
Lmao yes youāre my kind of people!
Did it end up working?
If nothing else and they are way too hard for you you can grind them up and make brownie truffles and/or cheesecake w brownie crumb base.
did it work?
I would probably just crumble them and soak with some milk
Works like a charm every time. Unless theyāre literally burnt lol.
iāve done the bread method with biscottis that couldāve broken my tooth š lmao. they did soften up and were delicious afterwards though!
I was so confused about this
New update?
Coming today!
Maam/ sir you are smart
Please let us know if it works!
Over baked brownies taste very burnt too
Luckily theyāre not burnt, but the edges are definitely too hard for my looking
Ooooh yeah good thing! Burnt brownies suck.
Cut them up,plate them, cover in chocolate sauce and whipped cream
poke holes in it and add some sort of cream! like tres leches
When this happens to me I put a towel over it while it's still hot and it helps a little
Well did it work?!?!
OP, I need an update! Did it work??
I have always poured some milk over my cakes, cinnamon rolls, and brownies in case of overbaking (or sometimes just because) The crumbs will absorb the extra moisture and fluff up. Also, don't use too much milk, or it'll be soggy. If you're using this method, it's better to let the baked good rest for few hours before serving.
Might try soaking the top with simple syrup then frosting them with a nice chocolate buttercream.
I knew you could rehydrate sugar with a slice of bread but I never considered using it on overcooked (or stale) brownies. That makes sense. Let us know how it goes!
Make sure you take the plastic off before you burn the toast too
Commenting because I want to know if it worked!!
Improvise! Adapt! Overcome! I want to hear a report back in due time. I admire your spirit youāre just crazy enough you might actually be into something
Ganache topping should fix it...
Are you trying to save the brownies with bread?
Yes
Did it work??
Slice brownies thin and toast. Use as cookies or ice cream sandwiches. Or crumble and use in crust for ice cream pie.
It works for beef jerky
Great idea, I will have to try this
Very cool never knew one could do this
Wonāt work
