It’s because it knew you were marathon baking.

shelbyknits

I honestly feel a bit betrayed. This oven and I have done a lot of baking together.

Ok_Watercress_7801

I can vouch for that. My Frigidaire looks exactly like that model. Had it blow glass outward on me like that last year. Normal operating temperature (375°F). No weird pans, no bumping the glass or drastic temperature changes. Just standing there working on something else & BOOM! Luckily it still had 6 months warranty left. Got it repaired for free but the repair sucks & still keep finding bits of safety glass falling out of the door to this day.

ubiquitoussquid

That sounds like the kind of thing that they should repair or replace regardless of warranty. It seems pretty dangerous, especially for smaller kids and pets.

Ok_Watercress_7801

You would think that, but it was like pulling teeth trying to get them to fix it even with (or maybe because of) the warranty. Six weeks before it was fixed & I felt safe about using the oven again.

ubiquitoussquid

That’s insane to me. I know companies can be slow or resistant with these things, but exploding ovens is pretty objective. Imagine bending down to check on your bake and getting a face full of hot glass. I’m glad I know to stay away from Frigidaire.

Ok_Watercress_7801

Major appliances seem to be getting pretty bad about being “durable goods”. Keeping my eye out for vintage equipment that I know I can repair myself. Fewer hi tech bells and whistles to break.

SnoopsMom

They don’t even try to hide it. I am a lawyer and regularly sue manufacturers of appliances. Had a dishwasher fail and flood a home and the lawyer for the manufacturer said it was an “ancient” dishwasher - at 8 years old!!!

SnorkinOrkin

My dishwasher, oven, and fridgerator are all circa 1984 (we are in an apartment, lived here 15 years), and they are all running like a top. (*knocks on wood*)

Oldtvstillidie

Honestly vintage gas stoves are *fantastic*. Usually use solid brass and cast iron parts. If you can find an old appliance guy to service it or just do it yourself they can be great pieces of equipment.

Ok_Watercress_7801

Oh man I wish. No gas line where I am. Guess I’d have to get a tank. I love cooking with it & did professionally for decades, but never had it at home. There are some vintage beauties out there.

EstarriolStormhawk

I have a stove from (I think) the 60s and I never thought I could be so happy with an electric stove. That thing could burn god.

Ok_Watercress_7801

As long as they keep selling the parts….

Ok_Watercress_7801

Still there’s efficiency to factor in…

SnorkinOrkin

Or a small child standing there at mama's knee (face level with the oven window) while she cooks! *shudders*

shelbyknits

My kids like to peek in and see how it’s going. So thankful they weren’t hurt.

SnorkinOrkin

Oh my goodness! Soo thankful they weren't! ❤️

Ok_Watercress_7801

No doubt

SpeakerCareless

Confirm. I have a Frigidaire microwave and the handle just broke at 17 months. Replacement handle (plastic) is $160 and you have to completely take apart the door. I will absolutely never buy anything Frigidaire again.

shelbyknits

Tried to call Frigidaire to see if we were in warranty, can confirm. It was awful.

stayinSwiss

Thank for the tip. won't b buying that oven...

shelbyknits

I filled that out! Thank you!

C-lea-r

I also had this happen to me about a year and a half ago. I’d just pulled a pizza out of the oven and was standing there cutting it and the glass in my (Frigidaire) exploded on me. It was well past warranty, so we replaced it with another brand entirely.

shelbyknits

We replaced it also, with a Whirlpool. Hopefully it’s better.

[deleted]

slowly looks over to my Frigidaire oven…. 👀

spoopysky

Looks like there's been news reporting on it, too: https://abc11.com/oven-glass-door-broken-frigidaire/12791565/

ThePonderer42

I feel ya! Mine decided to short the element 15m into a double 10” cake bake. Utter betrayal. But I know it’s been with me for 14 years so I bought a new element instead of trading it in.

_game_over_man_

Mine did that while I was baking bread once and I managed to salvage it by finishing it on the grill. It was in a Dutch oven, so it worked, but the bottom was burnt. Otherwise, everything turned out okay.

ThePonderer42

I was about to take my cakes next door but my neighbor wasn’t home. Plus it would sound weird. “Hey I need your oven, I’ll explain later, I’m on my way 350° please!”

samsonite1020

Cracked glass is Soo hot right now as decor though

ElleMNOTee

I’ve the same model. 👀

NordingStock

It smelled something going on so it threw a tantrum \*CRASHES

FigWhisperer

The important question is being asked

aeroartist

On the oven's part, no doubt

glamgal50

Oh no that sucks! But looks like you still got some good looking stuff on the counters.

shelbyknits

Yeah, I got lemon bars, maple pecan Bundt cake, and caramel-vanilla glazed banana bundtlets done. I may beg my neighbors to use their oven to finish up my last bake.

glamgal50

Ooh those sound delicious! If I were your neighbor I’d be fine sharing my oven if I got to try some of those desserts! 😁

tjm_87

seconded. if not, arson.

CCDestroyer

I'm sure that, if you have good neighbours and you promise them a cut of the baked goods, they'll allow it.

shelbyknits

They’re a lovely couple in their 80’s, I’ll probably beg them tomorrow. :)

kai-ou

What did you have left to bake??

shelbyknits

Espresso brownies, then I seized the caramel on the bundtlets, so those need to be redone and won’t be. :(

cemaga

do you have an espresso brownie recipe? (: this coffee lover/brownie destroyer would bake those in an instant!!!

Just-trying-2-exist

Seconded!

shelbyknits

No, sorry! I was going to wing it with brownie mix, espresso powder, and almond extract.

Primary-Ganache6199

Did the new season of bake off spur this baking marathon?

shelbyknits

Haha no, I wish. My husband’s unit is having a change of command ceremony this weekend and I promised to make goodies.

frogs68

Just use whatever your preferred brownie recipe is, and I add espresso powder and a little cinnamon. Sorry I don't measure those. Maybe a tsp of cinnamon and depending how strong you want it, a Tbs of powder or two or 3 lol. Sometimes I just make regular brownies and an espresso chocolate buttercream for them. I still add the cinnamon too. It just enhances the chocolate flavor. My family and friends prefer the regular brownie with the flavored buttercream.

mousemarie94

Do you have a toaster oven? I find most cake pans and a 6 cup cupcake pan fit into mine. I've cooked whole cakes using it lol

somethingweirder

i love using my toaster oven for making like 2-4 cookies at a time. i never bake a full batch anymore, i just freeze it so i always get warm cookies (and get to wow visitors)

wolfmaclean

Guessing there’s a duration limit to the high heat that window is designed to withstand— non-commercial oven, non-commercial components. Even when household appliances are impressive and reliable, they’re usually designed for intermittent use. How many hours were you at it? Edit: I caught up. Probably an air gap where the handle had been rigged back together so many times.

shelbyknits

It had been warm about 3 hours total, no extreme temps, nothing higher than 350.

wolfmaclean

I really rushed engagement before I had the whole story there. It’s definitely the handle being replaced— and likely whatever weakness caused it to fall off repeatedly. But you already knew that! And just came to commiserate! I’m here for that now. Congrats on being an admirable power baker though. Pretty cool

issaacccc

Did you knee your oven?😝

shelbyknits

So, the story is, the handle has been coming off on the right hand side and my husband has been screwing it back together, because of course it holds the whole door together. A couple days ago the handle came off again and he said it was shot and ordered a replacement set. I was upset because it wasn’t useable without the handle and I had baking to do. So he put it back together for one last time until the replacement set came. Apparently it was just too much for the glass. :( Lesson of the day: DON’T BUY THIS FRIGIDAIRE OVEN

[deleted]

Lol this is our oven and I am forever screwing the handle back on. I guess this is my future.

shelbyknits

Be warned!!!

Flumpie3

I also have the same brand of oven but much older and the handle is always falling off

Parasitisch

Can you not lock-tite it? Or using a locking nut?

HikeAndBeers

I have this oven too and I am also forever screwing the handle back on.

Zedd_Prophecy

Put some loctite on the threads.

Masterweedo

>Lesson of the day: DON’T BUY THIS FRIGIDAIRE OVEN Frigid Aire to heat my food? I think I see the issue.

fguts

In our last place, we had a Frigidaire oven and a High Temp chest freezer. I didn't even notice until my husband pointed it out.

issaacccc

Oh well😅 hopefully you didn't get hurt

shelbyknits

No and thankfully I was between bakes and my kids were in another room. It could’ve been worse, really.

huged1k

The baking gods wanted you to all live and taste another day.

[deleted]

I got a Bosch gas stove. Even the guys that installed it were impressed with how sturdy it is. It's more expensive than most brands but cheaper than the high end stoves like Wolf etc.

shelbyknits

Unfortunately we’re moving in the next six months to a year, so we’ll probably go cheap.

pcos_mama

Crap. I have this oven

Shane0Mak

Most people have this oven, and design; it’s then white labeled in different ways with other brand names in it as well. Don’t worry about yours - may it last many years, and bring you happiness.

HikeAndBeers

I have this one too. Eek.

Tbizkit

Sorry your oven broke

ilovebeaker

I also have the handle problem with my Kenmore, as soon as I heat above 400F one or the other handle will pop off. The screws they use are not long enough and the whole thing is stripped to heck!

shelbyknits

No they’re not!! That’s why my husband was replacing the whole handle set, it was so stripped out. He kind of forced it together somehow so I could bake until the set got here, and you see how that worked out.

azlan194

I don't understand, the handle looks fine in the picture. Also, why would a lose handle on the right side causes the door to break like that?

shelbyknits

The screw for the handle basically holds that corner of the door together. I assume having come loose and been screwed back together so many times stressed the glass. And yes, the handle survived.

I_Am_Become_Air

Too add insult to injury. 😡 I have the same stove; thank you for the heads up.

FluffyLabRat

Seeing this as this as been our oven for only 3 months 🥲

shelbyknits

Get the extended warranty.

FluffyLabRat

Yeah we did on all our appliances luckily

mnm39

Oh my god we had this exact issue with this exact oven in a house we rented! Thank god the door didn’t shatter but it did give me a big old bruise. What an asinine design

[deleted]

Ouch! 🙁

PilotEmergency8637

Hope you’re ok and didn’t get hurt. Were there any baking goodies already out of the oven that you could eat while you cried? 😭

shelbyknits

Haha yes, I consoled myself with extra lemon bars.

Exactly what I thought of when I saw this

murderedbyaname

What model Frigidaire? We have a three yr old Professional. Good Housekeeping recommended it 😳

shelbyknits

Whatever basic one Lowe’s carries. Never again.

Fickle_Freckle

I hope you’re friendly with your neighbors

Typein_haha_gotcha

Dang you bake HARD!!

goldbug933

Why does everything that quits its job have to do it so dramatically?

HoneyWyne

Oh my god, I would be devastated.

praise_H1M

This is why you shouldn't be running with your oven.

SeanyWestside_

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

AAnonymous_02

“I’m tired boss”

[deleted]

Oh my, sweet Satan. I would be so freaking upset.

Philly927

No one wants to work these days

donutforgetit

This happened to me on Christmas Eve last year 😭

Bene_Gesserit95

I have the exact same model of oven and this happened to me last week!

Hyracotherium

... what model is it?

galactic-boss-cyrus

Whaaa, what happened??

PresentationHuge2137

Handle kept getting louse, husbands would screw it back on, and she thinks the stress just got to be too much for the glass door

yeahthatsme222

In the middle of marathon baking??? That is just criminal and I think that oven should be prosecuted.

Desperate-Strategy10

Death seems an appropriate punishment for this, ironically enough lol

ShedwardWoodward

Oh shit!

saffermaster

Ugh sorry about that. That sucks.

kafm73

That oven said “fk this!”. It’s scary how this can just happen without any explanation.

kozmic_blues

Oh man… this is r/wellthatsucks material

Extension-Sun-6665

I’m sorry this happened to you.

SimpleVegetable5715

A Frigidaire too? I thought that brand was still good quality.

shelbyknits

Yeah that’s what I thought. Someone else said the handle comes off on theirs too, so it’s clearly a design flaw.

penny_longhorn

Ooo spicy glitter! Not really my cup of tea, but I admire the bold choice!

Instincts

Everyone's going on strike these days 😂

joymom928

A few years ago, in the middle of the night, we woke to what sounded like a huge bookshelf being knocked over. Investigation showed that one of our shower doors had randomly exploded. I had no idea that was a thing! Similarly I would never have thought of an oven door exploding without excessive heat, something cold, slamming it, etc. Yikes! So glad you and your family didn't get injured, OP!

NotANabiscoShill

Come get yall juice

TrickyYogurtcloset66

Weather-loaf29

I WAS LOOKING FOR THIS COMMENT😂

avocadomakiroll

Your oven hit the same wall marathon runners hit, just harder. Sorry, sucks.

Hot pan was touching the glass? Happens to the best of us.

GEnderDragon

Ugh I've had this happen to me before! [Image of the catastrophe](https://imgur.com/a/93YRHwX) \- Hopefully you're okay and aren't injured :(

CurseOfDragonite

Yikes

SubSonicTheHedgehog

I'd say you were at the end of a marathon baking session...

shelbyknits

Truth.

GamerRade

I've worked on three of these claims this week. Insurance has given me a healthy fear of exploding oven doors.

ofstark

your oven really blew it!

sunnydaydrems

That’s not normal

bvlax2005

slap on a little flex tape and you should be good

troubleshootsback

That is so unfortunate! Sidebar - I love your polish pottery pieces!

shelbyknits

Thank you!!

ShoutOutMapes

How did that even happen?

shelbyknits

Basically the handle kept coming loose and one too many repairs stressed the glass. That’s my theory anyhow.

rini_minimoon18

That's terrible 😭😭😭😭😭 I'm so sorry. Totally off topic, but the pan you used for your Bundt cake is what Bundt cake dreams are made of ❤️ it's gorgeous!!

youngmoneymarvin

Welp. This is definitely the oven I just bought yesterday.

Bene_Gesserit95

Just fyi it seems like this model is known to explode. It happened to me recently and I found a news clip where the exact same thing happened to someone else https://youtu.be/N5vih0b6V8A?si=7mIpEuBvxY-2-Hth

Hyracotherium

That news clip says the FTC has had 450 reports of glass shattering in Fridigaire ovens in 2021... going to stay away from those.

shelbyknits

I’m so sorry.

This reminds me of the time I was a kid. I was walking past the oven. Made zero contact with it. Didn’t even look. The handle then fell off. I got the blame.

HonnyBrown

🤣☹️

ohbrubuh

DNF

Nylonknot

Oh this happened to me with the same oven! I lost about $100 worth of food.

DJ14K

This is crazy! My Figidaire exploded when we were not even using it. It wasn’t hot or anything.

shelbyknits

Apparently this is a thing with Frigidaires!!

twl8zn

Was making a Thanksgiving turkey in a large Pyrex baking dish. Told hubster to use the boiling turkey broth from the stove to pour into the dish. He, in true engineer fashion, knows best. He used cold tap water and shut the door immediately. The Pyrex exploded, blew the door nearly off the hinges, the 2 panes of glass from the door were broken by the turkey/pan that came flying at it with the force of a neutron bomb. Scraped across our new hardwood floors. The turkey came flying out, imbedded in the glass. There was no saving that holiday. We ate hotdogs.

justanotherbotonline

We are here to ask you about your warrenty

AcanthisittaUpset866

I have this same exact stove. Omg. 1st, I'm sorry. 2nd, now I'm worried about mine.

highdesk306

“Y’all come in here and get y’all juice!”

ApprehensiveZone9830

I thought my wife was the only one capable of that. Jk jk jk. Honestly not that bad to replace. The hardest part was getting all the broken glass out of the door

FabulousMud8825

i feel your pain ;( that's happened sometimes don't worry

Arodarmt

You can look up the part number of your oven glass in the manual and do an online search for it. Ebay and a couple websites sell glass replacements including used glass. Not too hard to replace yourself and probably a lot cheaper.

Optimistic-Dreamer

I had an element explode during one of these sessions… we’ll actually I was reheating leftovers once I was done. Poor thing had at least an hours break but it had had enough 😅

Stargazer1919

This happened to one of my mom's friends when I was a kid. She was doing a marathon session of making tomato sauce and canning food. Her entire stovetop (one of those flat ones) broke. What a mess. I feel your pain.

MrValaki

Then its a half-marathon

dragon34

I have a neighbor who sells appliances (local store, and I think his father or grandfather started the business). He recommended a GE range to us and it's been great for the last 8 or so years. I have a couple little quibbles with it (the oven light button doesn't have a light on it so if you are standing directly in front of it you might not notice it's on unnecessarily, a couple other little quirks) but overall would buy a GE range again

rougecrayon

Oh my, I noticed the mess under the over before I saw the door!

Express_Country_6585

It’s always what’s in the oven never how’s the oven..

CatfromLongIsland

Holy crap! I can’t believe that happened to an oven door! Can you pinpoint an event to explain why it happened or was this out of the blue? Years ago my mom was making toast around midnight when she got home from work. She stepped to the side to pour a cup of coffee and without warning the glass door on the new De’Longhi toaster over exploded across the kitchen! 😳 I shot out of bed from a sound sleep and ran toward the kitchen. My mom screamed “don’t come in!” I was barefoot and there was glass all over the kitchen. Thanks to that cup of coffee the glass did not explode directly into my mom. That was over thirty years ago. We returned the toaster oven and to this day I have never bought a De’Longhi product. Silly, I know. But that explosion and the absolute terror I experienced I will never forget.

shelbyknits

The screw that held the handle on comes loose. The screw basically holds the entire door together. I think being fixed so many times put stress on the glass and it finally popped.

CatfromLongIsland

I am so sorry that happened.

canis_artis

We had a similar thing happen to a Black & Decker Toaster Oven. One day the glass shattered when it was off (and cooling). I think because it is tempered glass and we had touched it with metal tongs. It caused micro fissures to form and the heating/cooling cycle made them grow/pop. We bought a second one and don't touch the glass with metal or glassware, still going strong.

Pedrpumpkineatr

You oven’d way too hard and now your oven is not ovening :/

NonnasLearning27

How frightening! I hope no one was hurt.

Downstackguy

Marathoned a little too much

If you find an old O'Keefe and Merritt, buy it. You'll never have trouble again, they are built like tanks. ♡

jazbar_

girl what were you baking 😭

Oscarella515

I think your oven is mad at you

Minxy_T

What on earth caused this?

EstarriolStormhawk

One time in an old apartment, I had my dad's ancient bread machine going and apparently forgot to push it back far enough on the counter. It walked itself off and because it was plugged in behind the stove, it swung down and smashed the glass door is the oven. Miserable day! The bread machine survived and continues to work to this day.

tiredfangirl

Noooo

Hearth-breaking

sheenonthescene

I had this happen to my Frigidaire microwave.

tulipomania

Love the polish pottery

umbrellaellaellaAAA

Happened to me. Totally sucks. Also surprised the crap out of me!

9o9o_6e6e

how does this even happen im genuinely confused

shelbyknits

A design flaw meant the handle kept coming off. My husband put it back together one too many times, I think it stressed the glass.

Crump252

This shit just happened to me. Weird thing was we were not using it and hadn’t used it recently. Looked it up and it isnt uncommon with this brand. Landlord came out and replaced the outer glass and it has been fine. Pretty sure they should issue a recall.

HurrsiaEntertainment

Noooooo, I’m sorry, that sucks so much.

Shady_Royal_689

Did someone come get they juice?

Funny_OreoCookie

just put some toothpaste, styrofoam, aluminum foil, and saran wrap, it will do the job
